Brownian motion in UK polls

London, April 24 — Whether or not Gordon Brown manages to hang on as prime minister, the new British parliament that is to be inaugurated next month will look more brown than ever before. An analysis of the Black and Asian candidates’ list of the three main political parties – made available to the Hindustan Times – shows that the House of Commons could welcome at least 11 South Asian MPs, including at least six of Indian origin after May 6. The final figure is likely to be higher. Some of them will be sitting MPs defending safe seats – such as Britain’s senior Indian-origin MP Keith Vaz of the ruling Labour party and his Conservative counterpart Shailesh Vara – but there will also be a smattering of new faces. Together Labour, Conservatives and Liberal Democrats have put up 131 Black and Asian candidates. In an election that may well lead to Britain’s first hung parliament since 1974, every ethnic minority vote is being wooed – it could mean the difference between forming that government and staying out. Some estimates say there are up to 113 ‘marginal seats’ where the population of Black and Asian voters is larger than candidates’ winning majorities in the last 2005 election. At least 50 of these seats are thought to be ‘very marginal’ – key battlegrounds amid nervous predictions of a slender majority for the largest party in the new parliament. Of the 131 candidates, 86 are ethnic South Asians and of them, 34 are of Indian origin. However, many have been selected – by all three parties – for constituencies where their chances of winning are remote. Among Indian-origin candidates who are likely to make it to parliament are Vaz, his sister Valerie Vaz (they will be the first Asian brother and sister lawmakers) and Virendra Sharma from Labour; Shailesh Vara and Priti Patel from the Conservative party; and Parmjit Gill of the Liberal Democrats. Two more Indian-origin Conservative candidates – Alok Sharma and Paul Uppal – are said to be in with a chance. In the wider South Asian context, Labour is likely to have more MPs of Pakistani origin than the Conservatives, who have selected a larger number of Indian-origin candidates in relatively safe seats. Britain currently has nine South Asians, including five who are of Indian origin, among a total of 15 Black and Asian MPs. However, both Labour and Conservatives have stoutly resisted a proposal for all-ethnic shortlists in selected urban seats – along the lines of informal all-women shortlists introduced by Tony Blair after he became prime minister in 1997. Of the three main political parties, Nick Clegg of the Liberal Democrats was the only leader who supported the proposal when it was tabled in parliament last year. Ironically, with the ratings heaving seismically toward the Liberal Democrats after Clegg won the first two of three televised election debates, this all-important party is likely to turn up in parliament with just one Asian MP – Parmjit Singh Gill. He is undaunted: “As a Liberal I follow in the footsteps of Dadabhai Naoroji,” said Gill, referring to the Indian National Congress founder who became the first British Asian MP in 1892. The lopsided composition of the House of Commons can sometimes find a reflection in debates about immigration that are guided by perception rather than hard data. Last week, in the middle of a poll campaign that has been largely free of race and migration rhetoric from the mainstream parties, the mayor of a town in southwest England posted a joke on Facebook: “Illegal immigrants are like sperm – millions of them come in but only one works.”

“Party leaders are useless at this,” admitted one well-regarded candidate, fighting in a constituency with a large Asian population. “It’s only the voters that can make the difference. At the end of the day, if our people don’t vote for us, then we are not going to make it.”

Leonardo DiCaprio ‘helping Kate Winslet deal with split’

London, March 17 (ANI): Leonardo DiCaprio is helping pal Kate Winslet deal with her marriage breakdown, it has emerged.

DiCaprio and Winslet rose to fame playing lovers in ‘Titanic’ and were reunited on screen two years ago in ‘Revolutionary Road’ – directed by her husband Sam Mendes.

It has been claimed that the actress’ relationship with Mendes, 44, suffered on set and eventually led to their break-up.

The couple separated several months ago and made the split official on Monday.

However, DiCaprio has become a shoulder to cry on as cracks appeared in her six-year marriage.

“Leo and Kate have been like brother and sister since they starred in Titanic together,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

“And since Kate”s marriage started to go south, around the time they were filming Revolutionary Road, they”ve got closer again.

“Kate has always really adored Leo and feels like she can tell him anything.

“They were so young when Titanic came out, so it”s fair to say they basically grew up together, professionally at least.

“They were thrust into stardom together and were the only people who knew what the other was going through. He”s been a rock for her,” the source added. (ANI)

Kate Winslet split from Sam Mendes ‘out of boredom’

New York, March 17 (ANI): Kate Winslet decided to put an end to her seven year old marriage with Sam Mendes ‘out of boredom’, it has been alleged.

The Oscar-winning actress, 34, and the director, 44, called it quits two years after they teamed up for the film Revolutionary Road, based on a drifting couple.

“She felt bored. When Sam isn”t working, he”d just as soon stay home. Kate loves going out. … She was the one pushing for the divorce,” the New York Daily News quoted a friend of the couple as saying.

The source further claimed Winslet’s steamy scenes with co-star Leonardo DiCaprio in the film were the tipping point.

The friend said that movie “put a lot of stress on their marriage” and “Kate came to regret making the movie with Sam.”

The pal continued: “They”ve been pretty much living separate lives since the end of the summer. They realized some time ago that they were not a good fit. They were more like brother and sister.” (ANI)

Village council heads meet to register support for honour killing

Lucknow, Sep. 14 (ANI): Representatives of various village councils from Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi met to express their support for the traditional honour killing of couples who marry in the same gotra (clan).

These councils known as ‘Khap councils’ are notorious for their vicious campaign against couples getting married within the same clan.

“Village councils are doing the right thing. They should be killed. There is no other solution to it. If they go for love marriage in the same clan then real brother and sister should also marry. Why should parents look for grooms and bridegrooms for their children,” said Mahendra Singh Tikait, head of Baliyan village council, Uttar Pradesh.

The meeting comes nearly two months after a man was killed for marrying a girl in the same clan in Dhrana village of northern Haryana.

Village councils in Haryana are notorious for issuing diktats against couples who marry within the same clan.

Caste system runs deep in the rural areas where people are still bound to the ancient principles and practices.

There are many incidents where same clan marriages have been opposed and couples subjected to humiliation and even killed by the angry villagers. (ANI)

Tito Jackson: MJ’s kids are 100pc his

London, July 16 (ANI): American singer and late King of Pop Michael Jackson’s brother Tito Jackson has insisted that the ‘Thriller’ star fathered all three of his own children.

Tito Jackson, 55, said all one needs to do is look into the eyes of the children and see the likeness of Jacko there, especially his youngest son Blanket’s.

“They are all his children. Blanket is Michael’s, I can tell. Those eyes don’t lie. Them eyes are Michael over again. I see a lot of Michael in him,” the Mirror quoted him as saying.

“Paris and Prince are Michael’s children. Yes they are. Just because they look white doesn’t mean they are not his.

“I have an uncle who is married to a white girl and they have three kids. Two of them are white and one is black.

“When they go to school people don’t even know they are brother and sister.

“They are all Michael’s children. Prince looks just like my grandfather. There’s no question they are Michael’s. They are 100percent his.

“The kids are like three peas in a pod. They remind me of me and my brothers when we were growing up,” he added. (ANI)

Watson, Grint couldn’t stop giggling while shooting kissing scene

Washington, July 9 (ANI): Harry Potter star Emma Watson has revealed that she and Rupert Grint had a hard time shooting their onscreen kiss for the new boy wizard movie – because they couldn’t stop giggling.

Watson and Grint, who play Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley in the hit franchise, locked lips for the first time in the latest instalment, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

However, Watson says that during the shoot, the pair was struck with a fit of the giggles.

“I was quite terrified. We weren’t looking forward to it really. The thing is, it could potentially sound like we are putting each other down but we were both in the same boat. It was a horrible thing to have to do because we are just like brother and sister, so it’s really weird,” Contactmusic quoted Watson, as saying.

“He (director David Yates) did spring it on us. We didn’t really know. We had problems with laughing – we kept laughing. We would get there, and we just couldn’t take it seriously. It was awful. But anyway, it’s done now, and it was good. We have watched the playback and it’s good,” she added. (ANI)

Indian American faces 49 years in jail for bribe

Washington, April 14 (IANS) An Indian American who earlier worked with immigration services has been convicted of conspiring to encourage immigrants to enter the country illegally and accepting a bribe, according to a report.

A federal jury Monday found 54-year-old Hasmukh Patel of McDonough in Georgia guilty of taking actions to bring an Indian couple to this country with fraudulent work visas, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported citing prosecutors.

Patel faces up to 49 years in prison and a $1.175 million fine when he is sentenced June 23 by US District Judge Clarence Cooper, the report said.

A witness testified he paid Patel, an immigration adjudicator with the Department of Homeland Security, $100,000 to bring his brother and sister-in-law into the US.

Witnesses from the US Consulate in Mumbai, India, testified Patel called the consulate to vouch for the visa application.

Raunchy stories behind constellations revealed

London, Apr 13 (ANI): The organisers of Europe’s largest science event will reveal saucy stories behind the naming of constellations in an adults-only lecture.

Royal Observatory staff will deliver a lecture entitled ‘X-Rated Stories In The Stars’ as part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival (EISF).

Already a sell-out, the strictly 18-plus event will narrate the salacious reality behind the naming of constellations.

“When we do the kids’ talks we tell them versions of the Greek myths relating to the constellations,” the Scotsman quoted education officer Tania Johnston as saying.

She added: “However, the real stories are far too raunchy and gory for young audiences. We thought it would be fun to do an adults-only lecture.

Most people are vaguely familiar with the myths from childhood, but have no idea about the torrid affairs and sordid behaviour that surround them.”

The talk will detail how Ursa Major or the Great Bear came from one of Zeus’s lovers, Callisto, turned into ursine form after their affair.

The lecture will also delve into the lurid tale behind Orion.

“Orion is one of the constellations that people recognise the most, but they more than likely won’t be aware of the background,” Johnston said.

“In one version of the story a lady, Artemis, fell in with Orion and her brother Apollo grew jealous because there was a little bit of a strange brother and sister relationship going on there. He basically ended up getting Artemis to kill Orion without her knowing.

“Apollo persuaded Orion to swim out as far into the lake as he could and persuaded his sister to aim for the black dot in the distance with her bow and arrow – Orion, of course,” Johnston added.

In addition, the talk will focus on the graphic violence, which is central to many of the legends.

One has to pay 8 pounds-a-head for the lecture, including a glass of wine, at the City Art Centre on April 16. (ANI)

Cyclist Haussler feels more Australian than German

Sydney – Australian-born cyclist Heinrich Haussler wants to ride in the green and gold of his homeland rather than represent his adopted country of Germany.

“I’ve noticed that I feel more Australian than German,” the rising star of European road racing was quoted as saying Tuesday.

“In 2010, I will ride for Australia. My decision is final,” Haussler told the cyclingnews website.

Haussler, 25, was born in Inverell, New South Wales, but moved to Germany at the age of 14 to take up a scholarship at a German sports school.

He added a German passport to his Australian one and has represented Germany at world championship level.

His parents, and his brother and sister, still live in Australia and he said he was determined to give up his German racing licence and race for Australia.

Haussler has found success with new team Cervelo after leaving Gerolsteiner. He finished second in two of the biggest one-day classics, Milan-San Remo and the Tour of Flanders. (dpa)

Madge’s adopted son asks real father ‘who are you?’

London, March 31 (ANI): After being recently reunited with his biological father in Malawi, Madonna’s adopted son David Banda asked him who he was.

Peasant-father Yohane met his three-year-old son at the Kumbali Lodge where David is staying with Madonna and her other kids, Rocco, eight, and Lourdes, 12.

The two spent the boys-bonding time together with the help of an interpreter, and Yohane revealed how his “very special” lad failed to recognise him, and asked: “Who are you?”

“My son didn’t recognise me and asked me who I was. I understand, as he was a barely a year old when he left – too young to remember these things,” the Sun quoted him as saying.

“And, truthfully, I didn’t recognise him either as he has grown so much. David sat with me and spent time squeezing and playing with my nose.

“It was the proudest day of my life, to sit here again with my son.

“Now I want him to meet his new half brother and sister and show him the village in which we all live,” he added. (ANI)

If Advani becomes PM, Mayawati to be his deputy, says Amar Singh

Lucknow, Mar 15 (ANI): The Samajwadi party (SP) on Sunday said that if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L. K. Advani becomes the Prime Minister after the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati would become his deputy.

“In the past Mayawati had formed government in Uttar Pradesh thrice with the support of the BJP. Her Rakhi relation with Lalji Tandon (BJP’s candidate from Lucknow) is well known. Therefore, I say that if Advani becomes the country’s prime minister, Mayawati will be the deputy prime minister,” Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh said while addressing party workers, earlier in the Sunday afternoon.

“Whether it is lotus or elephant, they are companions as brother and sister,” Amar Singh remarked.

The SP leader blamed BSP chief of fielding maximum number of candidates with criminal antecedents.

“If Congress wants to field its leaders like Salman Khursheed and Noor Bano, they are free. But Bhadohi assembly by-elections, where the Congress candidate forfeited his deposit by getting a mere 2,000 votes, show the ground reality. The seat was won by the SP candidate despite misuse of official machinery by the BSP government,” Singh commented. (ANI)
