NY man said to use computer skills to aid al Qaeda

A New York man accused of helping al Qaeda with computer systems and cash was denied bail on Monday in a New York court.

Sabirhan Hasanoff, 34, a dual U.S. and Australian citizen who owns a home in Brooklyn, New York, was arrested on April 30 and charged with conspiracy to provide material support to Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda network, according to a U.S. District Court indictment.

Another New York man, Wesam El-Hanafi, was arrested and charged in the same indictment, and is currently detained pending an appearance in Manhattan federal court later this week. Both men are accused of pledging allegiance to al Qaeda and using their computer expertise to aid the group.

After hearing from prosecutors and Hasanoff’s attorney Anthony Ricco, U.S. Magistrate Judge James Francis placed Hasanoff in detention without bail, deeming his “level of sophistication” too big a risk.

Hasanoff pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Al Qaeda was responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States that included strikes on the World Trade Centre in New York with hijacked airliners that killed almost 3,000 people. Another hijacked plane hit the Pentagon in Washington and a fourth was brought down in a Pennsylvania field.

PRIME ASSET

Ricco said his client, an accountant, had been a group chief financial officer for a Dubai-based company for 3-1/2 years and that his extensive travel was strictly business.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John Cronan argued Hasanoff “turned to al Qaeda in this very city where he lived and embraced its extremist ideology and radical goals.”

Prosecutors said they had a witness who would testify against Hasanoff if the case goes to trial.

Hasanoff’s “advanced computer knowledge,” as well as his two passports, made him a prime asset to the radical network, Cronan said.

Among Cronan’s accusations were that Hasanoff held coded online chats with El-Hanafi discussing fighting overseas, bought e-mail encryption software and made international wire transfers to al Qaeda militants.

He visited Yemen, Syria, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey among other places, Cronan said.

MJ burns victim lookalike sparks rumours he”s alive

London, May 11 (ANI): A website has claimed that Michael Jackson is alive and masquerading as a burns victim, astonishing users all over the world.

Internet rumours on YouTube and Facebook also claim the King of Pop is appearing on TV talk shows as Dave Dave, 33, a man who suffered severe facial disfigurement after his father set him on fire.

Dave was born David Rothenberg, in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of six, his father set him on fire over a twisted revenge concerning the child”s custody.

The little boy suffered 90 percent injuries, and was scarred badly, but survived.

His mother, Marie wrote a book on his ordeal, which was then made into a movie. A trip to Jackson”s Neverland ranch was organized for the boy, where the pop star took the boy under his wing.

Dave, now a law student living in Utah, changed his surname to break all ties with his father.

“He befriended me. He took me into his life, which is very rare for Michael to do.

“But he opened up his arms to me and accepted me as a very good friend of his. And throughout the years, he never let me go,” The Sun quoted the boy as saying.

Now Dave, who appeared on the Larry King show to talk about his memories of Jackson on the day of the star”s memorial service last year, is rumoured to be the pop star himself.

The website called michaeljacksonhoaxforum.com, is owned by a 28-year-old and her friend, Mo, who call themselves Michael Jackson Death Hoax Investigators.

“At first we started investigating Michael”s death as it was a gut feeling we both had.

“The media told us two different stories. TMZ.com reported he died six minutes before the doctor pronounced him dead, and CNN kept telling us he was in a coma. What really happened still remains a mystery,” said the website owner.

Lawyer Brian Oxman, who acts as Dave”s spokesman, rubbished the rumours saying that Jackson would be the last man wanting to study law.

“He was so remarkable that people find it difficult to believe he is no longer with us. They long for him to remain a part of our lives.

“Dave Dave is an extraordinary young man. Michael Jackson took care of Dave for many years and asked nothing in return,” he added.

Jackson died aged 50 in June last year. (ANI)

NRI doctor killed by stalker in US

New York City, April 27 — An Indian doctor at the School of Medicine at the Ivy League Yale University was murdered outside his residence in a quiet Connecticut town apparently by a former colleague from a New York hospital who stalked him over an earlier dispute. The victim, 34-year-old Vajinder Pal Toor, lived in Branford, and was a post-doctoral fellow at Yale’s Medical School.

The suspect, 44-year-old Chinese national Lishan Wang, has been arrested by the local police and charged with murder and attempt to murder. Wang’s last known address was in an Atlanta suburb, Marietta.

He is originally from Beijing. The incident occurred at about 8 am as Dr Toor was headed towards his car at the condo complex where he lived in the suburb of New Haven, where the university is located.

The gunman shot Dr Toor multiple times but failed in his attempt to shoot his wife, Parneeta, who is five-months pregnant. The Toors have a three-year-old child.

Wang was apprehended while driving away in his red minivan about a mile from Toor’s residence. He was carrying two handguns at that time.

Dr Toor had graduated in 2001 from Guru Govind Singh Medical College in Punjab. A person who picked up the phone at Toor’s residence but did not identify herself said that his wife was “still in a state of shock but was trying to appear calm” so that the child was not upset.

The genesis of the alleged killer, Wang’s anger appears to date back to 2008 when he worked under Dr Toor’s supervision at the Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Centre in Brooklyn, New York. Wang was suspended by the hospital in May 2008 and fired in July that year.

FEATURE: Obama hype takes over Trinidad and Tobago By Silvia Ayuso, dpa

Port of Spain – Obama-mania has struck Trinidad and Tobago like a hurricane – though the Caribbean country is set to host 34 country leaders from across the Americas, residents only seem to care about US President Barack Obama.

“I would like to shake his hand,” said Trinidadian Shanti McKenzie.

McKenzie was clad in a T-shirt with Obama’s face.

“It’s a good thing that he’s coming,” the woman told dpa, the German news agency. “I wish he was our new prime minister here.”

Like many of her compatriots, McKenzie is convinced that Obama “will be a great change” for Latin America and the Caribbean.

“I hope he can also bring a change in Trinidad,” she gushed.

Shanti made her way toward the centre of Port of Spain, stopping at some of the many street stands selling all kinds of Obama-themed souvenirs.

Beyond T-shirts, badges, stickers and poster-sized inauguration photographs of the US president and his wife, Michelle, are on offer. Indeed, local media have expressed disappointment that the first lady did not join her husband for the OAS meeting.

Arestes Belford is selling more up-to-date memorabilia, including photographs with the coats of arms of Trinidad and the United States and a reference to the Summit of the Americas.

Belford expects the island to give a warm welcome to all its guests but admits that there is special anticipation for Obama.

“Trinidad is a welcoming place. That is our symbol,” he said. “It is for everybody, but the thing is that (Obama) is the star of the show.”

Belford is from Trinidad and Tobago but currently resides in Brooklyn, New York. He could not miss an occasion like this to travel to his native country.

“It’s the first black (US) president and the first one to come to Trinidad in a very long time. I can’t remember the last US president who came to Trinidad,” he said.

Behind Belford, the giant screen over a fast-food restaurant between adverts showed music videos from local artists that are dedicated to Obama.

“Barack, Barack, it’s Obama, first black president in White House, yo. A moment I’m so glad to see,” raps local star Third Bass on the screen in the main avenue of the country’s capital.

Ishmail Ismad walks down the same avenue with a poster on which he demands that the summit pay attention to Haiti. As a slogan, he borrows one from Obama’s campain: “Yes we can.”

“Obama represents change, hope,” Ismad said. “He says change has come to America, that means it’s come to the world. I’m optimistic, and I like his mantra, ‘yes we can.’”

Albert, another man who sells Obama memorabilia on the street, is in no doubt.

“The big boss is coming, the big boss. After God, he’s the boss,” he stressed. “The world respects Obama, we also do.”

Beyond the international echo of the presence of the first black US president in Trinidad and Tobago, Albert rejoices about its more mundane aspects.

“In Trinidad, we need many things getting done, and nobody listens to us. Now Obama is coming, and we are getting everything done, the streets,” he said. “I wish he would come every 6 months, then everything here would be very nice.” (dpa)

Matilda named beneficiary of Ledger’s life insurance money

Sydney, Mar 14 (ANI): Matilda, Heath Ledger’s three-year-old daughter, has been officially named the sole beneficiary of his life insurance policy.

Following a Los Angeles court hearing, her custodian John Laviolette and lawyer William Shernoff emerged from Superior Court Judge Luis Lavin’s chambers wearing smiles.

“It is finalised and everybody is mutually happy,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Laviolette, as saying.

When asked if the money would go to Matilda, Shernoff said: “Yes. veryone is happy”.

The Dark Knight star took out the life insurance policy seven months before his naked body was found on January 22, 2008, in a Manhattan loft apartment he was renting.

He named Matilda as the benefactor.

An autopsy by the New York Medical Examiner’s Office found the Perth-born 28-year-old Oscar winner died from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs, including painkillers and sleeping pills.

Michelle Williams will take care of Heath’s Oscar until Matilda turns 18

Melbourne, Mar 06 (ANI): Hollywood actress and late Heath Ledger’s former lover Michelle Williams will take of his Oscar award, which will go to his daughter Matilda, until the girl turns 18.

Matilda will be the owner of the Oscar, which will always remind her of her talented father, but The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided that Matilda’s mother Michelle will take of it until Matilda turns 18.

Heath Ledger’s parents Kim and Sally, who accepted the Academy award on his behalf, said that the Oscar might go back to Australia.

“She can’t sign for it until she’s 18, so it stays in trust here or in Australia,” News.com.au quoted Kim as saying.

However, Academy spokesperson Leslie Unger confirmed that Williams, who lives in Brooklyn, New York, with Matilda would receive it and it would stay with them in Brooklyn, New York.

“We expect a representative of the Ledger estate to bring the statuette in tomorrow so that the engraved plate can be affixed,” Unger told the L.A. Times newspaper.

“Soon after that, we expect the statuette to be delivered to Michelle Williams,” Unger added.

Williams won’t bring daughter up in LA to avoid media circus

London, Feb 23 (ANI): Actress Michelle Williams says that she will never bring her daughter Matilda up in Los Angeles because of the media attention surrounding her ex-fiance, late actor Heath Ledger.

Williams, who has shunned the spotlight by choosing to live in Brooklyn, New York, with her three-year-old daughter, said that she would never consider moving to Hollywood.

“I wouldn’t raise Matilda there. For all the obvious reasons – being the daughter of Heath,” the Daily Star quoted her as telling the Telegraph.

“Being an actor’s daughter. It’s a town that’s about one thing and I want her to have options,” she added.
