Turkish coach crash kills 16 people – reports

A coach carrying Russian tourists crashed near Turkey’s southern resort of Antalya on Tuesday, killing 16 people and injuring dozens more, broadcasters and a news agency reported.

Television pictures showed the wrecked coach lying on its roof after leaving the road and falling into a ditch in the early hours of Tuesday. The dead included the Turkish driver and tour guide while the reamining fatalities were Russian tourists.

Antalya Deputy Governor Mehmet Seyman told the state-run Anatolian news agency 16 people were killed in the accident, and 25 tourists were injured. Rescue teams were trying to get the injured out of the coach, he added.

Antalya is one of Turkey’s most popular tourist destinations, and visited every year by hundreds of thousands of mainly German, Russian and British tourists.

Court rejects TV rights appeal against Sky Italia

An Italian court on Monday rejected an appeal against the sale of satellite TV soccer rights to News Corp unit Sky Italia, averting possible financial problems for Italian clubs.

The appeal was filed by Conto TV, a small satellite operator. Conto claimed the way Serie A rights for the next two seasons were sold to Sky Italia was unfair.

“It does not appear that Conto TV has suffered particular disadvantages,” Judge Claudio Marangoni of the business section of Milan’s court wrote in his ruling.

Conto TV had tried to bid for matches and said the 1.15 billion euro ($1.4 billion) deal with Sky Italia was made “without competition in the digital satellite sphere”.

The Italian soccer league had warned of dire consequences if Conto TV’s legal action was successful. Like other clubs in Europe, Italian sides rely heavily on spending by broadcasters. (Reporting by Manuela D’Alessandro; Editing by David Holmes)

ITU tells Iran to end Eutelsat satellite jamming

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) called on Iran on Friday to end jamming of foreign satellite broadcasts, saying it is prohibited under the rules of the United Nations agency.

“The (ITU) Radio Regulations Board urged the Administration of Iran to continue its effort in locating the source of interference and to eliminate it as a matter of the highest priority,” the ITU said in a statement referring to interference with Eutelsat, a French satellite operator.

Iranian authorities have been jamming foreign satellite broadcasts into their territory since late last year, with broadcasters such as the BBC and Deutsche Welle affected. Access to the Internet for Iranian citizens has also been affected.

‘This Morning’ demonstrates different sexual positions to TV viewers

London, Mar 16 (ANI): Viewers of ‘This Morning’ were in for a saucy treat when they were shown how to spice up their romantic relationships with a demonstration of different sexual positions on daytime television.

On the show, presented by Holly Willoughby and Philip Schofield, couples clambered on to a bed to give viewers tips on how to match their sexual positions according to their mood or their needs.

Tracey Cox, a relationships expert, explained positions for couples of different heights or for when they are feeling lethargic.

The act was part of the programme”s ””sex up your life week’’, where the broadcasters are showing off a range of ways to revive flagging sex lives.

The couples involved in the raunchy demo were wearing pyjamas as they showed off their moves.

Before the show, Schofield said his co-host was ””a bit shocked”” at the prospect of broadcasting a slot dedicated to sex.

””Holly just said that was much easier than she thought it would be. You have to talk about these things,” the Telegraph quoted him as saying afterwards.

””For 21 years sex has been a hot topic for discussion on This Morning and the subject really connects with our viewers who really involve themselves,”said Executive producer Karl Newton.

””We decided after the success of our love week earlier this year to turn up the heat and launch a special sex week, covering a whole spectrum of issues, from infidelity to poor performance and from oversexed men to sexual diseases, no area is off limit,” he added. (ANI)

Formation of regulatory authority only after consultation with industry: Soni

New Delhi, Aug 26 (ANI): Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni has said that a regulatory mechanism would be formed for broadcasting only after consultations with stakeholders

Soni assured the broadcasters that the industry’s larger interests would be taken into consideration while forming the mechanism.

” Some ground rules are needed. But no laws would be imposed on broadcasters,” Soni said.

Addressing a seminar of broadcasters Soni informed the media that the I and B Ministry is holding consultations with broadcasters on the nature of the regulatory authority.

“I don’t see why broadcasters should have apprehensions about content regulation. I would like to categorically say that the government does not want to put draconian laws on electronic media.”

She said the consultations with the broadcasters are not taking place with any pre-conceived notion and expressed hope that a positive outcome will emerge from the consultation.

” As channels operating in the country are increasing it is difficult to monitor all of them, therefore the proposed authority will also measure impact of these channels,” Soni said. (ANI)

Details released on Michael Jackson memorial

Los Angeles, July 3 (DPA) Organisers Friday released the first details of Michael Jackson’s public memorial service, confirming that it will take place at the Staples Centre in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday.

A total of 17,500 tickets will be available via lottery for fans who register online at Staplescenter.com. But police will not allow any mass gathering around the venue for fans without tickets, and announced plans to close off a wide area of downtown Los Angeles on the day of the event.

The event is expected to be one of the most viewed in history, and organisers are making available free live video feeds to broadcasters and websites around the world.

Jackson family spokesman Ken Sunshine said there would be no memorial procession and that no details of the memorial service itself would be released prior to the event.

Radio Pakistan sees Indian Punjab, Pakistan’s mirror image

p
Abohar, June 22 (ANI): The Punjabi Durbar programme of Radio Pakistan is seeing Indian Punjab similar to what is existing in Pakistani portion of the State. /pp
This was evident when one heard the latest Punjabi Durbar programme, which alleged that the Congress-led Government at the centre doesn’t pay attention towards the poor people and instead favours the rich people, thus causing the poor become poorer and rich get richer. /pp
The producers of the programme would like all listeners to believe that at a time when global financial downturn has affected almost all countries, causing a number of banks and companies to go bankrupt, India too is going through a difficult time./pp
Pawan Kumar Bansal, an economist in Abohar, said: The Indian economy has remained balanced. The poor people of India have established good sources of income for themselves. They are making good money. The statements made by Pakistan are completely wrong because our country is experiencing growth in every sector. /pp
At the time of our independence, we had very little resources because at that time the England was ruling over us. But the situation has changed, the per capita income has increased and a number of big industries have been established, he added. /pp
Perhaps the broadcasters of Radio Pakistan need to see how India has progressed and the Governments of the day have tried to solve the problems of rich and poor in every possible way. /pp
Be it the much appreciated debt-waiver policies, reservation schemes to safeguard interests of the schedule tribes or schedule castes and the socially backward, National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, and various other steps have perhaps missed the notice of Radio Pakistan’s broadcasters. /pp
The poor people of India have got pension plans, they are provided foodgrains at cheaper rates and a number of industries have been established to provide employment opportunities to them, Pawan added. /pp
People of Pakistani Punjab would like their government to carefully look at the state of people in Pakistan. /pp
It would be a shock for them to know that Punjabis on the Indian side live life king size. (ANI)/p

Ben 10, Ninja Turtles ‘giving millions of kids nightmares’: Poll

London, May 13 (ANI): Children’s television shows like Ben 10, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers are so violent that they give millions of under-sevens nightmares, claims a new poll.

A study of 3,000 parents for TheBabyWebsite.com claims that such programmes force children to grow up too quickly and can encourage bad behaviour.

In the study, over 70 per cent of parents said the youngsters had regular bad dreams because of programmes like Ben 10.

Also many felt broadcasters are too lenient about the content – with some shows overly violent and aggressive.

And some, like Hannah Montana, encouraged kids to grow up too fast.

According to the poll, two thirds struggle to decide which programmes are suitable for their children, reports The Sun.

They call for age certificates to be screened before programmes.

A spokeswoman said: “Violent TV contributes to nightmares.”

Ten most unsuitable shows for under-sevens: Primeval; Doctor Who; Power Rangers;

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; Ben 10; Britannia High; Grizzly Tales for Gruesome Kids; Robin Hood; Hannah Montana; Horrid Henry. (ANI)

A film song similar to national anthem turns controversial

Mumbai, May 9 (ANI): Bollywood filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has said that he wouldppeal against a ban on the title song of his upcoming film ‘Rann’, which has whipped up a controversy.

The censor board has decided to ban the title song that appears similar to the national anthem in its tune, but with different lyrics.

“Rann” (Battle), delves into the highly competitive world of television news reporting in India, putting the spotlight on the media industry’s insatiable appetite for advertisers and viewers.

The film is touted as a behind-the-scenes look at how news channels greedy for ratings are being manipulated into sensationalizing stories to grab eyeballs.

“If the censor board like they said, if they don’t want to pass, I will go to the tribunal advising committee and whatever the procedures allow me I will do that,” Varma said.

He said that the critics did not really understand the context of the song, adding that he was ready for a debate.

“I think the people who are having a problem are in minority and they are not listening seriously to what exactly the song is saying. I like to have a conversation with them,” Varma said.

With more than 60 English and regional-language news channels in India beaming into TV-owning homes, the film comes at a time when broadcasters are scrambling to provide exclusive content. (ANI)

Punjab lacks drinking water: Radio Pakistan

Amritsar, May 4 (ANI): Radio Pakistan in its latest programme has stated that Punjab, known for the its five rivers-Ravi, Beas, Sutlej, Chenab and the Jhelum (now it Pakistan), is not getting enough water.

In the latest series of Punjabi Darbar programme, Radio Pakistan has attempted to project that the Government of India has not taken enough steps to ensure that Punjab gets enough water for drinking purposes and irrigation.

A senior Congress leader termed the programme as baseless. The Government of India, he pointed out, has taken several steps to provide water to the farmers including the micro irrigation system.

Senior farmers in Punjab point out that during Partition, the irrigated areas went to Pakistan and India had to undertake many schemes to ensure that the dry areas of Indian Punjab secured water. New irrigation canals were built, and the State became the granary of India.

“The farmers are keen to produce more in the farmers. They have adopted multiple cropping, and they want more water. The Central Government has provided facilities like micro irrigation techniques, sprinkle irrigation and other facilities,” said Sukhjinder Raj Singh Lali, a senior Congress leader.

It has been suggested that broadcasters of the Radio Pakistan should be invited to Punjab to have a look at the progress made by the State. However, many feel, that the Punjabi Darbar programme will find some other excuse to spread lies about the State. (ANI)

Janet Jackson ‘wardrobe malfunction’ fine may be reinstated after Supreme Court’s order

London, May 5 (ANI): The US Supreme Court has ordered a re-examination of an appellate court’s decision to quash a fine over Janet Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction” during 2004′s Super Bowl.

It was in July last year that the appellate court ruled that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) acted “arbitrarily” in fining CBS TV 550,000 dollars in September 2004, for airing the glimpse of Jackson’s breast during the broadcast.

As many as 90 million viewers are said to have seen the incident during the half time show.

The malfunction happened while Jackson was performing alongside Justin Timberlake, who reached for her bra.

Broadcaster CBS received around 542,000 complaints regarding the malfunction.

However, the 3rd US Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia has now been directed to consider reinstating the fine imposed by the FCC.

The order comes after a high court ruling last week that upheld the FCC’s policy that subjects broadcasters to fines against even single uses of swear words on live television, reports the BBC.

That ruling will be reviewed in view of the Supreme Court’s order in the case. (ANI)

Diack against reducing athletics world championships to six days

Diack against reducing athletics world championships to six days Berlin – IAAF president Lamine Diack says he is against the idea of reducing the length of the athletics world championships from nine to six days as demanded by media broadcasters.

“I am against it. We have the world championships for the

athletes, not for television,” Diack told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa in Berlin, where this year’s championships take place August 15-23.

Diack said he expected the sport of athletics to build on the success of last year’s Beijing Olympics by delivering a real sporting festival in Berlin in five months time.

“We saw at the Beijing Games that people were really passionate and that passion lasted for nine days,” he said.

“It won’t work to have a six-day world championships in Daegu, South Korea, in 2011 followed by nine days at the 2012 London Olympics.”

The IAAF will soon have to renegotiate many of its marketing and broadcasting deals that were in first put in place for the 1999 world championships in Sevilla, Spain, and Diack admitted it remained uncertain whether the same sponsors would continue in place.

“Berlin is a stage for me. Here we can show our sponsors what value we can bring,” he said. (dpa)

Theron left red-faced on TV as ex-dance teacher revealed her childhood antics

London, March 7 (ANI): Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron’s former dance teacher left her red-faced on a British chat show by talking about her embarrassing childhood habits over the phone.

It happened when broadcasters Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan were interviewing the ‘Monster’ star on March 5.

According to reports, the talk show was going smoothly until the programme’s producers made a surprise call to Theron’s former dance teacher Bernice Lloyd in her native South Africa.

“Charlize was a wonderful child. She was always so beautiful and so disciplined and always, always showed entrepreneurial skills,” the Daily Express quoted Bernice as saying.

“She always had these entrepreneurial skills and she used to buy sweets from the school tuck shop and sell them at night to hungry children for a profit. We thought it was wonderful – we, her teachers, thought that showed gumption (initiative),” she added.

Theron, who was mortified by the revelation, then exclaimed: “Oh my god, Bernice! This in insane! I don’t remember selling candy at a profit! I did start drinking at a very early age, so my memory is a bit dodgy.” (ANI)

Chicago Bulls visit ‘big fan’ President Obama at the White House

Washington, Feb.27 (ANI): Usually, teams visit the White House after winning a championship, but the Chicago Bulls made the trip Thursday less than 24 hours after one of their worst losses of the season in New Jersey.

Of course, it helps when the President is a big fan.

Players, coaches broadcasters and front office personnel for the Bulls met with and posed for photos with President Obama on Thursday afternoon for about 10 to 15 minutes in the Blue Room of the White House, reports the Chicago Sun Times.

The Bulls presented the President, a long-time Bulls fan, with a Bulls jersey with “Obama” and No. 44 on the back.

“The President chatted with the players and said he was converting the tennis court out back here into a basketball court and invited them to come and play pick up with him,” said David Axelrod, the senior adviser to Obama. “They had a good visit.”

During the team photo, the President said he wanted to stand next to Ben Gordon because “Ben’s not that tall.”

The team found that pretty funny. (ANI)

Flintoff says he intends to play in IPL 2009

Barbados (West Indies), Feb.25 (ANI): England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff expects to be fit to play in the lucrative Indian Premier League.

Though he has been ruled out of the Fourth Test against West Indies due to a strained hip muscle, and may not also play the Fifth Test and limited-overs games which follow, Flintoff is confident he will join up with the Chennai Super Kings, who paid over a million pounds for him, when the IPL starts on April 10.

“I don’t think it will be touch and go. The IPL’s still a while away so for all intents and purposes I’ll be fit for that. I’m intending to go, but it’s not really at the forefront of my thinking,” the Sun quoted him, as saying.

“I want to play Test cricket and I want to play the one-day internationals,” Flintoff added.

Flintoff insists it is in England’s interests for their players to take part in the IPL, with the World Twenty20 taking place on home soil this summer.

“Obviously financially it’s great. But to further our game and get better in that form of the game it’s important we go,” he said.

According to The Telegraph, Flintoff is likely to find himself bowling at Kevin Pietersen in his first appearance in the Indian Premier League. he IPL fixtures for 2009 have been announced, and they reveal that the two big-money English signings have been drawn together in the third match of the season – Chennai Super Kings against Bangalore Royal Challengers on April 11.

The match has been scheduled for a Saturday night, which shows how commercially attractive both Flintoff and Pietersen are deemed to be for broadcasters.

The second instalment of the IPL will run from April 10 until May 24, when the final will be held in Mumbai.

English players are only available for the first three weeks of the tournament, which will allow Flintoff to play six matches (or possibly seven, if he can persuade his bosses at Lord’s to let him bend the rules and face the Delhi Daredevils on Friday May 1, the day after the deadline ends).

The England players are due to start a Test series the following Wednesday, May 6.

Pietersen, meanwhile, should be able to play in eight games before flying home late on April 30. As salaries are payable on a pro-rata basis, depending on how many matches players appear in, he should thus come away with a larger pay packet: around 500,000 pounds to Flintoff’s 375,000 pounds. World’s first Internet car radio unveiled

Melbourne, Jan 7 (ANI): Sick of listening to those limited radio channels while driving? Well, now you can have access to 30,000 stations including online broadcasts and AM and FM stations from around the globe—thanks to Aussie researchers who have developed the world”s first Internet car radio.

Developed by Melbourne-based online radio aggregator miRoamer, the technology was unveiled in prototype form at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

miRoamer has in turn inked a deal with one of the largest producers of car radios in the world, German-based Blaupunkt, who will produce the radios, which should soon be integrated into the latest models by car manufacturers such as Ford, Holden, Mercedes, BMW and Audi.

The product will also be sold separately for those who want to install it in their cars.

The technology may pose a significant threat to traditional terrestrial broadcasters such as Austereo, as it opens them up to competition from tens of thousands more radio stations from around the world.

George Parthimos, 37, CEO of Doncaster-based miRoamer, revealed that his company has collaborated with internet radio stations from all over the world and brought them together, thus enabling them to be accessed via miRoamer.com and on devices including car radios and mobile phones.

“Some of them are small garage type stations that might only have five or 10 listeners all the way up to broadcasters which have an audience of up to 5 or 6 million people monthly,” The Age quoted him as saying.

He added: “You can listen to anything from traditional terrestrial stations, to internet-only stations, to genre-based stations – jazz, rock, pop, ”80s, ”70s, comedy, talk, finance.

“You”re not tied down to the limitations of terrestrial radio. We see this as an evolution of radio.”

The Blaupunkt radio accesses the internet by connecting via Bluetooth to the driver”s mobile phone, which must be hooked up to a telco”s 3G mobile broadband plan.

Parthimos claimed that one would need a 2GB monthly data plan to power the Internet radio for a month on the average drive to and from work.

Besides the cost of the mobile broadband plan, Internet car radio users will need to pay a fee for the radio itself.

Parthimos said the radio will be available for about 399 dollars, with an additional monthly subscription fee of about 15 dollars to access the stations.

According to estimates, the product will be launched in the US and Europe in the second half of 2009 and in Australia next year as a stand-alone product and built into new cars from the factory. (ANI)
