Britney Spears’ ex-manager, mom escalate legal feud

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Did he manipulate, drug and cut off his client from the real world? Was she really the problem, and did she make all this stuff up?

Entertainment | People

We’re, of course, talking about “Britneygate” — the entertaining dispute between Britney Spears’ ex-manager and Britney Spears’ mother that’s now landed on the doorstep of a California appeals court.

In 2008, ex-manager Sam Lutfi filed a defamation lawsuit against Lynne Spears for things she wrote about him in her memoir, “Through the Storm.”

Last August, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge refused to dismiss the case. A few weeks ago, Lynne Spears appealed that decision, and on Monday, Lutfi filed papers, presenting his argument why the case should continue.

Now the Court of Appeal of the State of California gets to hear “Britneygate” and the two widely different tales of who is responsible for the singer’s collapse.

Lynne Spears claims that Lufti was a master manipulator who secretly drugged her daughter, cut off her communications and mobility, and set himself up as “gatekeeper” before he was fired.

In contrast, Lutfi says Britney’s life was already in turmoil before he got involved. His proof: Two failed marriages, losing custody of her child, shaving her head, a reckless driving arrest, drug rehab, etc.

That aspect of the case is really a sideshow, though, to the interesting legal questions.

In pressing her appeal, Lynne argues that Lutfi’s reputation was so low at the time the book was published, he’s “libel-proof” as his reputation couldn’t possibly be damaged further.

Au contraire, says Lutfi’s lawyer.

In his brief to the appeals court, Lutfi points out he’s never been convicted of anything and if his reputation was so badly injured based on a series of tabloid articles, it’s a decision that can only be made by a jury. In addition, he points to the case of Howard K. Stern, who sued for defamation after being accused of having a hand in Anna Nicole Smith’s death. A judge ruled in that case that just because Stern might have been falsely accused doesn’t mean he could not be further injured from false accusations again.

The entire brief is pretty entertaining. For instance, there’s a discussion about whether accusing someone of being “evil,” a “predator,” a “fake” and a “shifty man” are “opinions” or descriptive of “acts of misconduct” that are actionable as libel. There’s also an argument submitted by Lutfi that Lynne Spears is engaging in bigotry because of his ethnicity.

“Kylie may be in her 40s but she looked absolutely stunning – as beautiful as when she first became famous,” the Daily Star quoted an onlooker as saying.

“And that bum of hers, is enough to make any woman jealous – and any man go weak at the knees,” she added.

Kylie got director Joseph Khan to make the sexy video after he worked on 28-year-old Britney Spears’s ‘Toxic’ promo, as well as ‘Lovegame’ by Lady GaGa, 24.

The Aussie singer, who has been dating Spanish model Andres Segura, 32, since 2008, is set to release new album ‘Aphrodite’ in July. (ANI)

K-Fed says divorce from Britney made him fat

London, March 31 (ANI): Kevin Federline blames his divorce from pop star Britney Spears as the reason behind his weight gain.

The former dancer, who recently appeared on Celebrity FIT club in the US, says the end of his two-year marriage to the singer plunged him into depression, turning him into a couch potato, reports the Sun.

However, Federline admits there may be another reason. He was drinking up to 24 cans of full-sugar fizzy drinks a day.

He told chat show host Bonnie Hunt: “I didn”t drink water, that was all I drank. That was my coffee and my candy.”

K-Fed admits spending days on the couch eating pizza and Macaroni cheese, his only exercise being playing with his young kids.

He added: “I hit 30-years-old, I stop dancing, started eating and sitting on the couch playing with the kids here and there. I got lazier and lazier, and fatter and fatter.” (ANI)

Obama’s Tweet hacker says he is a ‘kind pirate’!

London, March 26 (ANI): US President Barack Obama’s Twitter account hacker has described himself as a “kind pirate”.

Francois, who has been arrested by FBI, claimed that he just intended to show the loopholes in internet security.

“I am not a hacker. I am a kind pirate. I did not act with a destructive aim… I wanted to warn them, to show up the faults in the system,” the Sky News quoted the Frenchman as saying.

He added: “Big companies are no more secure than any internet user. That”s the message I wanted to get across.”

Francois had cracked the social networking site”s administrator codes in April last year.

He had then hacked into the feeds of people like President Obama and Britney Spears.

He used the moniker ‘Hacker Croll’, from the Pacman video game.

Meanwhile, local prosecutor Jean-Yves Coquillat seems to agree with Francois.

He said: “He is not a hacker in the classic sense. He entered a house whose door had been left open.”

Also, French police said the unemployed computer technician did not plan to make money out of it.

He is due to appear in court on June 24 and can face two years in jail if convicted. (ANI)

Frenchman arrested, targeted Obama Twitter account

An unemployed Frenchman has been arrested for targeting the Twitter accounts of U.S. President Barack Obama and singer Britney Spears, French police said on Wednesday.

Captain Adeline Champagnat, a senior member of the police cyber crimes unit, said the 25-year-old man gained access to passwords of Twitter administrators and used them to try to break into the accounts of U.S. politicians and stars.

“He didn’t get as far as their personal accounts. But he had gained control of Twitter,” she told Reuters Television in an interview.

She said the FBI had tipped off the French police in July last year that one or more people were trying to get access to Twitter and had gained control of the social network.

That enabled them to create and delete accounts and steal confidential information.

The hacker, who went by the online name of HackerCroll, is under arrest in the central French town of Clermont Ferrand.

He was known to have carried out minor internet fraud but in this case was driven by the thrill of the challenge and appeared to be more interested in the private life of his victims than on obtaining sensitive data, Champagnat said.

“His aim wasn’t to make money. It was simply to show that he was able to access accounts of Twitter members. And the best proof of that is that he did screen grabs of certain confidential data which he tried to post on blogs that are reserved for pirates or hackers,” she said.

She said several FBI agents were currently in France to help their French counterparts carry out searches.

“The collaboration was very good with the FBI and it’s always very good with the FBI, because there’s a real exchange of information. It’s good cooperation to arrest the offender,” she said.

Frenchman hacks Obama’s Twitter account

A French man has been arrested for hacking into the Twitter account of U.S. President Barack Obama, French police said on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old man, who lives in central France, also stole information online about other celebrities, including Britney Spears, stealing passwords for email accounts and publishing personal information on the Web.

“This individual spread information about a dozen American personalities, notably Barack Obama, on specialist blogs,” Adeline Champagnat, head of the French office against online fraud, told Reuters by telephone.

The hacker, who went by the online name of HackerCroll, was driven by the thrill of the challenge and appeared to be more interested in the private life of his victims than on obtaining especially sensitive data.

“It would have been more of a problem if he (Barack Obama) had posted sensitive information,” said Champagnat, without saying what he had done with the president’s Twitter account.

French police were given a heads-up several months ago by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and officials believe he acted alone.

“He thinks he is good at this, and he is,” said Champagnat, adding he had had no specialist training.

Slim and radiant Britney Spears stars in new Candie”s ads

London, Mar 25 (ANI): Britney Spears has starred in the latest adverts for American fashion brand Candie’s.

And the pop-star with a troubled past looks slim and radiant in the pics for the campaign.

However, a short time later, the 28-year-old pop princess appeared tired and podgy, with greasy unwashed hair, while out on a shopping trip in Beverly Hills, California.

Recently, fellow songstress Ke$ha, 23, blasted Britney on her new single Styrofoam, singing: “In 10 years, Britney Spears‚ Britney who?”

“She looked a bit tired but bear in mind she’s a young mum juggling parenting and a showbiz career. Cut the girl some slack!” the Daily Star quoted a Britney fan as saying. (ANI)

Obama Twitter account hacker released by French police

London, March 25 (ANI): The hacker who broke into US President Barack Obama’s Twitter account has been released by the French police.

The unemployed 25-year-old was taken into custody after being chased by both French officials and FBI agents, according to a foreign news agency.

The suspect, who used the pseudonym “Hacker Croll”, was said to have had no specialist training and gained access into the popular micro-blogging website by simply guessing users” passwords, reports The BBC.

His targets also include other US celebrities, including Britney Spears, according to officials.

He has now been ordered to appear at court in the central French city of Clermont-Ferrand on June 24. (ANI)

Ke$ha apologizes after insulting Britney Spears, Justin Bieber

New York, March 24 (ANI): Ke$ha has apologized after landing herself in hot water for insulting Britney Spears and Justin Bieber.

The controversy started when Ke$ha blasted Britney’s lip-synching, telling the Scottish Daily Record, “I think if you are going to be a singer, you should sing. No offense to her specifically, but people have asked me before to mime. I have been up at 3 o”clock in the morning for a television show with jet lag, but I refuse to mime.”

To add further insult, a recent leaked song called “Styrofoam” features Ke$ha singing the lyric, “In ten years, Britney Spears . . . Britney who?”

However, the ‘Tik Tok’ singer clarified the situation during her appearance on “So You Think You Can Dance Australia”.

“I didn”t write that bit. That was from when I was 15 – and there is a reason that song”s not on my record. I have to admit now I do regret ever singing that, because I have mad respect for her,” the New York Daily News quoted her as saying.

Ke$ha also took to Twitter to apologize to tween sensation Justin Bieber after she gave an interview to Maxim in which she called him a “little baby” and said she would love to “push him around on stage in a carriage.” (ANI)

Ke$ha takes a dig at Britney in new song

Melbourne, March 22 (ANI): Pop sensation Ke$ha has taken a dig at Britney Spears, over her career hitting a low after initial success, in her new song ‘Styrofoam’.

According to Global Grind, the pop star’s track hints at how things don’t remain the same always.

One lyric reads: “In ten years, Britney Spears … Britney, who?”, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Also, Ke$ha recently criticized Spears for lip-synching at her concerts. (ANI)

A. R. Rahman’s Chicago gig tickets sell for $1,050 each

Nevada (US), Mar 17 (ANI): Some of the tickets for Oscar winner A.R. Rahman’s Chicago (USA) June 18 “Jai Ho Concert” are now selling for 1,050 dollars per person on his official website.

This “Jai Ho Circle” ticket includes: no waiting in line – express entry, separate entrance on green carpet, and pre-show service of non-alcoholic beverages and snacks. The lowest price ticket available (for Section 206) for this Concert costs 54.50 dollars. The concert will be held in Sears Center and there is a limit of eight tickets per order.

Acclaimed Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, urged Rahman to lower the price of the bottom ticket to 20 dollars so that all his fans could enjoy his Concert in these times of recession. Zed, who is chairperson of Indo-American Leadership Confederation, however, commended Rahman for taking the Indian music to new heights and bringing respect and international recognition to Indian film music.

The “A.R. Rahman Jai Ho Concert: The Journey Home World Tour” kicks off at the Nassau Coliseum (New York, USA) on June 11 spanning 16 major cities worldwide, and ending at Wembley Stadium (London, UK) on July 26. Additional dates may be announced.

During this period, he will reportedly have live concerts in USA, Canada, Netherlands, France, Norway, and United Kingdom; covering the cities of Uniondale (New York), Atlantic City, Washington DC, Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Amsterdam, Paris, Oslo, Glasgow, Manchester, and London.

Well known choreographer-director Amy Tinkham, who has worked on the concerts of the likes of Paul McCartney, Madonna, Britney Spears, Dixie Chicks, Motley Crue, etc., will reportedly be associated with Rahman’s concerts, which are said to include acrobatics, new technologies, fascinating dance arrangements, changing sets, LED screens, and global cast of dancers and musicians. It is termed as a “virtual journey through beauty, culture, and spirituality” and also as “theatrical experience” utilizing “new technologies.”(ANI)

Well-readhead: e-reader vs the good old book

Judging from the available space, any books purchased after 2013 will need to be stored in the fridge.

You can see why an electronic book reader might appeal. I’m a serious book lover so have had some resistance to the idea of an e-reader. But I bought an Amazon Kindle late last year and have now been using it – alongside regular books – for about three months.

I know the world needs another Kindle review like it needs another Britney Spears crotch shot, but I feel obliged because I promised on twitter that I’d share my thoughts after I’d given the Kindle a decent workout.

Here’s the short version: I love it, it’s far cheaper than buying actual books but the range is too limited in Australia.

In a tip-o-the-hat to Choose Your Own Adventure, I’m giving readers two options here:

If you couldn’t give two hoots about my thoughts on the Kindle, skip to the end of the article for your 10 interesting things to read, watch or listen to.

Or if too much Kindle critique is barely enough, read on…

THE PROS: It’s very straightforward to use. You can alter the font size and style if you wish and the screen is very easy on the eyes. I didn’t find it any harder to read than a regular book. It is extremely convenient for travel – you can read a dozen books on holidays without weighing down your suitcase. One of the best features allows you to download a sample of a book to try before you buy.

Once you fork out the $300 or so for the device, the cost savings are extraordinary, particularly if you buy a lot of books. The first book I downloaded was Nick Hornby’s Juliet, Naked for $11.99. I checked at my local bookstore last week and it was $32.95. Here’s a price comparison on some other well known titles (all in Australian dollars):

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ by Stieg Larsson – $7.50 vs $24.95 in store.

Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert – $10.98 vs $24.95.

Stripping Bare the Body by Mark Danner – $17.92 vs $39.95.

No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy – $11.99 vs $22.95.

THE CONS: As a book lover, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I missed the feel of a regular book. And browsing electronically is not as good as browsing in a bookstore. The Kindle is great if you know what you want (and it’s available).

For me, by far the biggest drawback is the lack of range in Australia compared to the US. This is because electronic rights are still being negotiated in the Australian market. In my line of work, two books have attracted enormous attention in recent months: Going Rogue by Sarah Palin and Race of a Lifetime by Mark Halperin and John Heilemann. Neither is on the Kindle here.

The available fiction range in Australia seems fairly populist. If you’re after Stephanie Meyer, Stieg Larsson, Barbara Kingsolver or JK Rowling, you’ll be fine. If you’re chasing Philip Roth, Ian McEwan, Jonathan Franzen or Alice Munro, you’ll be frustrated. And forget about Helen Garner, JM Coetzee or Tim Winton.

I put this issue via email to Simon Fitzgerald, who is Amazon’s spokesman in Australia, and he replied:

“It really depends on the publisher and the rights they’ve negotiated with the author to sell the books. Amazon has books available in Australia that aren’t available to US customers and vice versa. There are now 323,756 books available to Australian customers, at the time of launch this number was around 280,000, so in effect thousands of books are being added on a weekly basis.”

As for the Kindle’s most significant con: read it in the bath at your own risk.

Today’s gems:

1. Charlie Brooker disagrees that the generic experience of the Kindle versus a book is one of its drawbacks – at least nobody can judge you for reading a pot boiler.

2. I’ve thought long and hard about linking to this article because it is possibly the most gut-churning, heart-wrenching thing I’ve ever read and it was so difficult to get through that I don’t know if I want to recommend the experience to others. It’s not gory or graphic but it is deeply emotionally stressful. I decided eventually to include it because it’s such a phenomenal piece of journalism. The article is called Fatal Distraction and the sub-heading is Forgetting a child in the back seat of a hot, parked car is a horrifying, inexcusable mistake. But is it a crime?

3. Until I read the article above, I only knew Gene Weingarten as a humour writer (he writes a column for The Washington Post called Below the Beltway). But he’s far more versatile than that. Check out his article on what happens when one of the greatest musicians in the world busks at a railway station.

4. I think Leonard Nimoy is going for an Australian accent here, but who can tell? (via @scrivenersfancy)

5. Will Rupert Murdoch be able to slay The New York Times with his overhaul of The Wall Street Journal? A New York magazine profile of Rupert Murdoch looks at this issue along with his battles with Google and his possible succession to his son, James Murdoch.

6. The famous author Jonathan Safran Foer was caught in a classroom explosion at summer camp when he was a child. “I can’t think of anything I’m more ashamed of than having asked Stewart to describe my face to me, or anything I am more grateful for than our having been together for those minutes.”

7. Knut the polar bear used to be so k-not.

8. Recently the Australian Literary Review published a survey in which Australian politicians nominated their favourite books. It prompted the author John Birmingham to ponder which books we really read as to those we pretend to read when asked.

9. If you watch Scrubs, you’ll know the terrifically manic performance of actor John C. McGinley. He recently wrote an article about his 12-year-old son with Down’s syndrome and why he objects to the word ‘retard’.

10. Is it difficult to find untainted jurors in the age of the internet?

Britney Spears’ ex-boyfriend, photographer jailed

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – A celebrity photographer who briefly dated Britney Spears at the height of her career meltdown was sentenced to 45 days in jail on Friday after clashing with an official trying to serve him a restraining order.

Adnan Ghalib, 37, one of the paparazzi who trailed Spears night and day in 2007, was also ordered to complete an anger management program.

Los Angeles prosecutors alleged that in February Ghalib drove his car toward an official who was trying to serve a court order keeping him away from Spears and her family.

Ghalib pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident, and charges of assault were dropped.

Spears, now 27, began a relationship with Ghalib in December 2007 when her private and public life were falling apart following her divorce, stints in rehab and a notorious head shaving incident.

Her behavior improved after the singer’s father intervened and was given control of her business and personal affairs by the Los Angeles courts in January 2008.
