Rachel Weisz anxious about playing Jackie Kennedy

London, May 20 (ANI): Actress Rachel Weisz is already feeling the huge responsibility of playing Jacqueline Kennedy in husband Darren Aronofsky”s new film – because she”s a Brit portraying an American icon.

The Mummy star will be play the role of Jackie and the film will portray Jackie’s life and how she coped with her husband President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963.

Despite being eager to start shooting for the film, she can’t help being a little anxious as to whether the American audience will accept a Brit actor playing the role of an American icon that everyone loved so much.

“It”s a recent project so the script is being developed and it”s a great script. I will have to start to do some reading,” The Daily Express quoted her as saying.

“Jackie Kennedy is American royalty and a 20th century icon, so it”s extremely scary, daunting, challenging and a huge responsibility. I don”t know exactly how I will play her yet because I haven”t started really working on it, but of course it”s a big responsibility,” she added. (ANI)

Brits spend over 14 hours a day sitting down

London, May 19 (ANI): If a new study is to be believed, then the average Briton spends an average of 14 hours and 39 minutes sitting down every day.

Commuting to work, a day at the office and then an evening in front of the television take up most of an average Briton’s time, during which he sits – which means that they hardly spend any time standing.

Four hours and 17 minutes at their desk, a further two hours and 27 minutes parked in front of the TV, another two hours and 25 minutes to use a laptop or home computer, and exercises just twice a week for 25 minutes a time leaves no time for a Brit to stand on his feet.

Meal times mean people sit down for a further 33 minutes, while 54 minutes are dedicated to playing computer games.

Finally, before settling down to sleep at night, most people spend an hour and 10 minutes reading books or magazines.

The average Brit spends an hour and 41 minutes driving car each day and another 52 minutes on public transport.

“In a recession we have to work harder and for longer hours to make ends meet,” The Telegraph quoted Zoe Hellman, Company Dietician for Weight Watchers UK Ltd, as saying.

“So we therefore have less time and money to spend on exercise – but to spend over half our day sitting down is a health bomb waiting to happen.

“Incredibly, the average person only does 50 minutes of exercise each week – that”s just a quarter of what is recommended for a healthy lifestyle.

“We know that it can seem difficult to find the time to exercise, but there are ways to introduce it into even the busiest lifestyles.

“Walking up the stairs instead of taking the lift, parking further from the shops, walking for 30 minutes at lunchtime instead of sitting at the desk are all free and easy ways of keeping fit,” Hellman added.

Hellman’s company conducted the poll of 3,000 people in conjunction with the launch of its get active campaign.

Several blamed long working hours, lack of time and energy, laziness, amount of housework and children for not being able to exercise.

Zoe Hellman added, “Half an hour”s exercise each evening would actually help workers to wind down and de-stress, and could even induce a good night”s sleep afterwards.

“Mostly, this lack of exercise and movement is down to habit. People become so used to relaxing in front of the TV at the end of a busy day they choose that over a short jog or gym session.

“But exercise also has an important role in helping people to lose weight and for keeping your weight in check, in addition to the long term health benefits of being active.”

And when it comes to keeping fit – men are more likely to exercise to get fit and maintain good health, whereas women are most concerned about losing weight. (ANI)

First Muslim woman Brit Minister accused of betraying her religion

London, May 16 (ANI): Baroness and Tory leader Sayeeda Warsi may be the first Muslim woman to hold a full Cabinet Post, but Muslim fundamentalists see her as an apostate who is hardly representative of the Muslim community.

She has also been warned of physical harm if she visits Muslim pockets. Last year she was pelted with eggs by Muslim protesters when she visited Luton, Bedfordshire.

Anjem Choudhary, a firebrand radical preacher whose group Islam4UK was banned by the last government accuses her of betraying her religion by supporting the British Army’s involvement in Islamic countries.

He told the Daily Star: “Sayeeda Warsi is not a Muslim in my eyes. She may look like a Muslim and have a Muslim-sounding name but she does not represent Islam or anyone in this country who is a Muslim”.

“She is a ‘coconut’, brown on the outside but white on the inside. In fact, she is whiter than most of the other white people in government,” he said.

“How can she be a Muslim and support the military involvement of the British Army in Islamic countries? She will be attacked by eggs every time she goes near a Muslim community,” he said.

“Some more extreme protesters may take the attacks further. There is no doubt she is in danger,” Choudhary added (ANI)

New Brit Govt. to ask Queen to take ‘at least’ five percent pay cut

London, May 16 (ANI): David Cameron led coalition government is expected to ask the Queen to take a pay cut from the 7.9 million pounds-a-year Civil List payment the royal family receives from taxpayers money.

The royal family had been expecting an increase when the current 10-year agreement comes to an end this year.

But senior figures in the new coalition government have warned that the royals will be advised to follow the Cabinet’s lead and accept a reduction of “at least” five percent, the Daily Star reports.

Downing Street advisers fear increases in royal spending could cause a backlash.

“The round of government cuts that are on their way are so deep, so severe, that there won’t be a single family in Britain who won’t be feeling the pinch.

“There couldn’t be a worse time for the richest family in the country to go to the taxpayer with a begging bowl,” the paper quoted an adviser, as saying.

The Queen will also be urged to make a round of royal redundancies, with low-ranking family members like the Duke of Kent and the Duchess of Gloucester being “sacked” from front-rank royal duties, losing their grace and homes.

Experts say it costs more than 40 million pounds a year to keep the royals running, plus 50 million pounds for police and security, the Daily Star reports. (ANI)

Dubai – where public kissing is a taboo, but prostitution flourishes

London, May 16 (ANI): Dubai”s Islamic austerity is nothing but a sham. Couples who publicly kiss are jailed, however the state turns a blind eye to 30,000 imported prostitutes.

According to The Times, a Brit who visited the state claimed that the second floor of a glitzy five-star hotel was filled with prostitutes. And the men were all potential punters.

While the man talked to Jenny, from Minsk in Belarus, she offered him “everything, what you like, all night” for the equivalent of about 500 pounds. The man, however, turned down the offer.

This was in the city centre of Dubai, the Gulf emirate where western women got a month in prison for a peck on the cheek. (ANI)

Homeopathy is witchcraft, according to Brit docs

London, May 16 (ANI): The British Medical Association has likened homoeopathy to “witchcraft”, and declared that the National Health Service should not pay for it.

Denouncing the use of the alternative medicine, hundreds of members of the BMA said taxpayers should not foot the bill for remedies with no scientific basis to support them, reports The Telegraph.

Dr Tom Dolphin, deputy chairman of the BMA”s junior doctors committee in England said: “Homeopathy is witchcraft. It is a disgrace that nestling between the National Hospital for Neurology and Great Ormond Street [in London] there is a National Hospital for Homeopathy which is paid for by the NHS”

Devised in the 18th century by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann, the alternative medicine is based on a theory that substances which cause symptoms in a healthy person can, when vastly diluted, cure the same problems in a sick person. (ANI)

Brit dog walker ‘snaps Victorian Age ghost in park”

London, May 15 (ANI): A dog walker has spoken of his amazement after snapping what he claimed was a Victorian Age ghost in a park.

Paul Reed, a father of two, spotted the phantom appear behind a park bench while he was walking through Kelsey Park in Beckenham, Kent, reports The Telegraph.

The man, 46, said he was walking pet pooch Harry in the park when the spook suddenly appeared.

“It was really spooky,” he said.

“Harry wasn”t his usual self. He was cowering back towards me and I must admit I was shocked when I saw the ghost appear before my eyes.

“Another walker said the ghost could belong to a woman who was buried in the park in the late 19th century,” he added.

Local Samuel Allan said: “There was a case of a woman being buried in the park in the late 1890s because she loved walking in it so much.

“It appears she still haunts the park and comes out now and again, much to the surprise of walkers.” (ANI)

Brit Muslim boxer involved in brawl ahead of title fight

London, May 15 (ANI): WBA light-welterweight champion Amir Khan was dragged away by his throat in a shocking mass brawl at the weigh-in for tonight’s title fight with Paulie Malignaggi.

Kahn was caught in a huge bust-up at the 1,000 pounds-a-night at Essex House Hotel in New York, The Sun reports.

Malignaggi’s promoter Lou DiBella raged: “Did you see this s**t, my guy got roughed up. If there’s one more incident of this kind, he won’t be fighting on Saturday. That’s a promise. The weigh-in was closed to the public yet Khan had so many people there shouting and screaming.”

Around 50 noisy Khan fans packed into the Petit Salon at the Essex House Hotel and pumped up the volume as Khan and Malignaggi deliberately touched foreheads and aimed verbal abuse at each other, The Sun reports.

Suddenly the violence exploded and it descended into a mass brawl with Khan fans trying to wade in.

Malignaggi tumbled into the hoardings and Khan was surrounded by people from his promoters, Golden Boy, and then led him away, The Sun reports.

Anthony Cantanzaro, Malignaggi’s manager, shouted: “Khan’s people came in and started fighting on the stage.”

Malignaggi said: “If Golden Boy had done this like they were supposed to do, there would have been none of this. There was shoving and then suddenly all hell broke loose.” (ANI)

Robin Hood really existed, believes Ridley Scott

London, May 15 (ANI): Director Ridley Scott believes Robin Hood truly existed.

The Brit hopes his new film on the folklore legend will arouse interest among historians.

“On this one (film), I wanted to go more real, because I really believe he existed. The ones (films) to date always treated Robin Hood like a myth, part of a fairy story,” the Daily Express quoted him as telling TV show Access Hollywood.

He added: “I never liked the green tights and I didn”t like the feather in the hat. It didn”t work for me. Even as a kid, it was not my idea of Robin Hood.”

The film got screened at this year”s Cannes Film Festival in France on Wednesday. (ANI)

Brit boxing champ’s brother to fight for Pak, but heart still with Britain

London, May 13 (ANI): British boxing champion Amir Khan’s younger brother is all set to represent Pakistan at the 2010 Commonwealth Games at Delhi after claiming that he is being snubbed by Team Great Britain.

Haroon ‘Harry’ Khan, who won the junior ABA’s title last year in bantamweight category, said he would prefer to follow his older brother and wear a Great Britain vest when the Commonwealth Games are staged in New Delhi.

But so far the 19-year-old has been overlooked by the GB senior squad and is ready to take up Pakistan on their offer to join them.

“I really wanted to box for Britain at the Olympics ever since Amir won silver in Athens. I looked at what he did and dreamed of going one better, The Sun quoted Haroon, as saying.

“But I’ve never had a look-in with the senior England squad, not even a letter. What used to happen was they would call me up a week before an international and ask if I could box, but I knew it was only because someone had pulled out and they never really wanted me,” Haroon said.

“I’d have liked to have fought for Britain at the 2012 Olympics, but that isn’t going to happen. I’ve spoken to a lot of English boxers and they said if they were me, they would go for it.

“When I went over to Pakistan, they were offering me a house and a car and a driver, if I wanted to stay there,” Haroon said.

Amir Khan was launched to stardom when he won the silver medal at the Athens Olympic Games, losing to famed Cuban Mario Kindelan in the final.

Brother Haroon wants to perform at the Commonwealth Games, but insists that he won’t represent another country at the 2012 Olympics in London.

“Whatever happens, I couldn’t see myself fighting for Pakistan at the 2012 Olympics in London. That just wouldn’t feel right. If all goes well, I will turn pro after the Commonwealth Games,” he said. (ANI)

Pak origin acid ‘honour’ attacker jailed for 30 years in UK

London, May 12 (ANI): A court here has jailed a sadistic Brit Muslim for 30 years for trying to pour acid down the throat of his married sister””s lover.

Mohammed Vakas, 26, carried out the attack to protect the family””s “honour”.

Mohammed Adeel, 20, the woman””s cousin, and Fabion Kuci, 17, got 14 years and eight years for the revenge plot.

New Brit healthy eating initiative: nursery kids banned from having b’day cakes

London, May 11 (ANI): A new British healthy eating initiative has asked a number of nurseries to ban children from having sweets or cakes to celebrate birthdays.

The “Pre-School Nutrition Project”, which was set up by Knowsley Borough Council and Chester University, sets out strict rules for nurseries which critics claimed risk “spoiling childhood”.

Sweets and cakes brought in for children’s birthdays cannot be eaten in the nursery, but must be handed to parents at the end of the day.

“Our Health & Wellbeing’s Early Years Healthy Eating Guidelines encourage nurseries to provide healthy snacks and treats for all children in their care, and encourages them to choose foods and drinks that are not high in sugar as part of a healthy lifestyle,” the Telegraph quoted Julie Tierney, the Assistant Public Health Director behind the scheme, as saying.

“It is important that special days are celebrated and nurseries are innovative and creative in the way that they do this without the need to give foods high in sugar,” she stated.

But Nick Seaton, who chairs the Campaign for Real Education, condemned the scheme.

“I am all for nurseries encouraging children to eat healthier. But banning sweets on birthdays is taking it too far,” he said.

“Diet is all about moderation and judgement. The powers that be should not be spoiling childhood all together.

“If you ban things completely some children will obviously rebel and it can be counter productive,” he added.

Researchers at Chester University will evaluate the scheme, and a final report will be delivered to council chiefs on May 28. (ANI)

Brit woman’s ‘naked candyman’ surprise

London, May 10 (ANI): A Brit woman was left in shock when she opened a bag of candy, only to find a two-inch pink sweet in the shape of a naked man holding his midget gems.

Lyz Parker, 23, found the naughty jelly candy in a bag of Candy King she got at Tesco Home Plus in Staines, Middlesex.

“When I opened the bag I screamed so loudly the whole office came running over. I couldn”t believe my eyes,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

Lyz, from Camberley, Surrey, called Candy King but at first they thought it was a prank call, but now they have launched an investigation in the issue.

“Clearly this is not part of Candy King”s assortment,” said the company.

Tesco added: “We expect better behaviour from our jelly sweets. We”ll raise it with the supplier.” (ANI)

Average Brit spends £39,480 in a lifetime getting beers in for mates!

London, May 8(ANI): The average Brit spends 39,480 pounds in a lifetime buying drinks for friends and workmates, a survey has revealed.

That means UK as a nation spends 30 billion pounds a year on beer rounds.

The men, however, take the cake. The survey by www.OnePoll.com revealed nearly a quarter of men go out twice a week, and buy rounds in groups of five. That equates to around 200 pounds a month.

“Buying rounds is a way of life in Britain and these results show us to be a very generous nation. The cost adds up and over their lifetime it amounts to a sizeable piece of their disposable income,” The Sun quoted a spokesman for the website, as saying.

The figures were calculated on a span of 47 years from age 18 to 65. (ANI)

And among the other 50 percent, the biggest reason they stayed in the closet was because they feared the reaction of loved ones. (ANI)

Rebecca Hall trained with mammogram technicians for new film!

London, May 4 (ANI): Actress Rebecca Hall has revealed that she trained with mammogram technicians to prepare for her role as a breast cancer check nurse in new movie ‘Please Give’.

The Brit was allowed to fondle boobs as part of her training so she could get a feel for her role in the film.

“I spent a day at the place where we shot (the movie), which was an actual mammogram unit. I spent a day with the nurse and the technician who oversees the mammograms and she taught me how to work the machinery,” the Daily Express quoted her as saying.

“I knew about understanding what the procedure is but we wanted it to be accurate. All the ones (mammograms) you see in the film, I”m doing. That”s my hand and I”m controlling the machinery. They were very, very trusting and willing extras. There is nothing sexy about a mammogram,” she added. (ANI)

Brit Muslim boxer to take on Mayweather, Pacquiao in a year’s time

London, May 4 (ANI): WBA World light welterweight champion Amir Khan has said that he will be ready to take on American legend Floyd Mayweather Junior and Philippine Manny Pacquiao in a year’s time.

Khan, who defends his title against Paulie Malignaggi in New York on May 15, said it is only a matter of fine tuning his skills before he can take on the world’s top two fighters.

The British boxer is willing to move up a division to fight undefeated Mayweather, who cruised to a unanimous points verdict over Sugar Shane Mosley in Las Vegas on Saturday night, The Sun reports.

“In 12 months from now, I will be ready for Manny and Floyd Mayweather Junior,” Khan said.

Mayweather and Pacquiao were due to fight this year before rows over drug testing got in the way.

But Khan has no doubt the money-spinning bout will go ahead. “I know them both well and they both want to fight,” he said.

“It’s the promoters trying to sort out all the details that are holding it up. Who would win? That’s a tough one but I’d say Manny. He’s more aggressive and I think he’d take Mayweather into an uncomfortable zone where he hasn”t been for a very long time,” Khan said.

“Floyd likes to control a fight but so does Manny and he has a higher work rate. If things go well, I could end up fighting the winner. This game’s all about timing. You have to know the best time to have these big fights. I want to catch these guys when they have come off their peak,” he added. (ANI)
