Flintoff’s ECB contract rejection threatens Test cricket, but he plays it down

London, Sep.17 (ANI): All-rounder Andrew Flintoff may have unwittingly incited the break-up of international cricket by his refusal of an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) incremental contract, but he has played down reports of a possible backlash.

Flintoff has assured that his rejection of an England increment contract, a second tier deal offered to him because of his retirement from Test cricket, did not lessen his commitment to England. The all-rounder, who is Dubai undergoing rehabilitation after knee surgery, made it clear that he has no intention of missing any England games should they clash with matches in the various Twenty20 franchise competitions he also hopes to be part of.

Although Flintoff has put all negotiations on hold while he recovers he is known to have been in preliminary talks with teams in Australia, where their revamped Twenty20 competition is to be called the Big Bash and South Africa, where the Pro20 is easily the most popular professional cricket in the country.

Sean Morris, the chief executive of the Professional Cricketers’ Association, said yesterday that other players would join Flintoff in rejecting national deals and that there may be a rash of early retirements from international cricket.

“I think there will be a lot of serious discussion in Johannesburg later this month among the parties and between the parties. I can’t overestimate its importance. In the space of a few weeks we have had two leading players withdrawing from components of the international game, Andrew Flintoff from Tests and Ricky Ponting, from Twenty20 internationals,” The Telegraph quoted Morris, as saying.

Flintoff’s move may stimulate more than debate.

England captain Andrew Strauss was mildly surprised by the decision.

“I’m not going to sit in judgement of him because we don’t know the reasons. We need to sit down and speak to him about why he’s done this and we’ll then make an informed decision about what that means to his availability for England,” he said. (ANI)

Exclusive Lennon interviews shed new light on The Beatles’ split

Washington, Sept 7 (ANI): A series of exclusive interviews with John Lenon have now been published, giving an insight into the star’ views on his bandmate Sir Paul McCartney and the Beatles’ split.

Previously unpublished chats of McCartney and Ringo Starr with British journalist Ray Connolly have also been released.

A 1969 recorded tape has Lennon praising McCartney’s musical ability.

This was the time when the Beatles were nearing a split, and Lenon was believed to have slammed McCartney’s work.

Contact music quoted Lennon as telling Connolly: “(For No One from the Revolver album) that was one of the good ones. All his semi-classical ones are best, actually. I suppose it was a bit hard on him… I only ever asked two people to work with me as a partner. One was Paul MCCartney and the other Yoko Ono.”

The tapes also show Lennon sharing the reason for the break up of the band, as also his confession that he wanted to initiate the break up much earlier than 1970.

Lenon says in the tapes that the band only stuck together to avoid any losses in the sales of their last album Let It Be.

He says: “Paul just kept mithering (worrying) on about what we were going to do, so in the end I just said, ‘I think you’re daft. I want a divorce.’”

In another interview given in 1972, Lennon adds: “The whole thing died in my mind long before the rumpus started. We used to believe the Beatles myth just as much as the public and we were in love with them just the same way. But we were four individuals who eventually recovered our individualities (sic) after being submerged in a myth.” (ANI)

Anil Ambani welcomes government’s fresh plea on gas row dispute with brother Mukesh

Mumbai, Sep 2 (ANI): Anil Ambani of Reliance Natural Resource Limited (RNRL) welcomed a fresh application filed by central government in the Supreme Court on a row over gas price with estranged elder brother Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Limited (RIL).

Top Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries, headed by Mukesh Ambani, and Reliance Natural, led by Anil Ambani, have been fighting over terms of a gas-supply agreement struck when the Reliance empire was split in 2005.

The fresh application by the government said that the government’s policies and contracts on production and gas pricing would prevail over any private arrangement.

“Reliance Natural Resource on behalf of its over 26 lakh shareholders is grateful to the Government of India for its neutral stand in proposing these amendments,” Anil Ambani told reporters in Mumbai.

“With the filing of application, the role of government in Reliance Natural Resource-RIL matter remains limited only to interpretation of just two issues. Issue A – the gas utilisation policy and issue B – provisions of the Production Sharing Contract. This is exactly the same scope of intervention that was permitted to the government of India by the Bombay High Court,” he added.

The latest tussle between the feuding brothers, which stems from the 2005 break-up of the Reliance empire built by their father, has raised concerns it could discourage investment in the sector as India scrambles to shore up its energy security.

In July, India’s apex court said it would club all petitions and applications in the case together.

The Indian government had earlier made a petition to intervene in the case, arguing that the gas is ‘state property’ and that the private agreement between the Ambanis over the gas is not valid. (ANI)

Washington, Aug 26 (ANI): American actress Kristen Stewart has revealed that she found the break-up scene in ‘Twilight’ sequel ‘New Moon’ very disturbing.

Stewart, whose character Bella finds herself in a love triangle with Jacob, played by Taylor Lautner, and Edward, played by Robert Pattinson, says that she struggled when she had to film a specific scene for the sequel ‘New Moon’.

Divorced men more prosperous but not happier

Sydney, July 8 (ANI): Divorced men are significantly more prosperous than divorced women, but they are more likely to regard themselves as poor four years after a marriage break-up, suggests a study.

The study, headed by the Australian Institute of Family Studies, found the incomes of divorced fathers with kids under the age of 18 shot 24 per cent, adjusted for family size, while divorced mothers’ income rose on average 1.8 per cent.

The researchers observed that women suffered considerable financial penalty for years after divorce, yet many said that they were no worse off than before the split, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

Nearly 13 per cent even said that they were better off, possibly, because they had better control over the finances.

And while the fathers reported being more better off than when married, 9.7 per cent cried poor or very poor four years after the divorce, compared with 4 per cent of the mothers.

Matthew Gray, the institute’s deputy director, and lead author of the study, said: “They might have more money but many used to have someone doing the cooking and cleaning and organising the social life, and some are alienated and angry because they don’t live with their children. And a lot of men really don’t want to pay child support.”

The paper was due to be presented at the Australian Social Policy conference at the University of NSW. (ANI)

“They have both been good friends to me so I’m not going to be drawn into Team Katie or Team Pete thing.

“Pete’s main priority now is to see his children, and spend some much-needed time with them. Aside from this, he is house-hunting, looking for a place to rent with an option on it to buy.

“Kate’s made it clear he can’t go back to their current home and as they sold their old place in Brighton, Pete is technically homeless. He’s distraught and this is the last thing he needs.

“He’ll be moving his stuff out piecemeal over the next few days, and has enlisted his brothers to help him choose a new pad. It must be within a 30-minute drive of his kids,” the friend added. (ANI)

Will Lindsay Lohan, Samantha Ronson reunite as couple?

Washington, May 7 (ANI): Speculation is rife that actress Lindsay Lohan and DJ Samantha Ronson may reunite as lesbian couple, with the two having an on-again, off-again relationship.

Sources say that the reunion between the two appeared possible, especially, after Lohan spent a night on May 5 with Ronson at her Los Angeles home, and after the actress revealed that she was still “in touch” and was friends with the DJ.

“Sam might eventually take Lindsay back … It wouldn’t surprise anyone,” People magazine quoted a source close to the couple as saying.

A friend of Lohan’s says that this break-up could be like other times in the past.

“It’s a cycle that can go on forever. Now that things have died down a little and Lindsay is behaving herself and showing Sam what she wants to see, Sam’s strength to stay away eases up,” the friend said.

But another source said that Ronson had “no plans to take her back”, and that a reconciliation would not happen without serious repercussions.

“Sam’s family will literally lose all respect if she goes back to Lindsay, and that’s what’s convincing her things are really over,” the source said.

“They do text, [blackberry messenger], have visits. Lindsay plays stupid mind games saying she is being pursued by major celebrity actors. She has a lot of free time to play all these childish games.

“Sam knows in her head, life is truly better off without Lindsay – even if her heart sometimes says otherwise,” the source added. (ANI)

Meet Denise Richards, the love guru

New York, May 07 (ANI): Denise Richards, who is divorced from Charlie Sheen and had a bitter break-up with Richie Sambora, was recently spotted doling out dating tips, according to sources.

“Denise was talking to a male crew member about his girl troubles, and she started doling out tips,” the New York Post quoted a source as saying.

Richards received harsh criticism for her performance of baseball anthem ‘Take Me Out To The Ball Game’.

However, the actress has confessed that she agreed to sing the song only because Cubs officials asked her to perform in return for letting her set up an information booth for the Kidney Cancer Association during the game. (ANI)
