MAN sees higher order intake in Diesel&Turbo ops

June 27 (Reuters) – German truckmaker MAN SE (MANG.DE) expects order intake in its Diesel & Turbo unit to rise above 3 billion euros ($4.03 billion) this year, more than the 2009 level, a German newspaper quotes the unit’s head as saying.

Industrials

“Orders are picking up again,” Klaus Stahlmann told Die Welt in an interview that was made available ahead of its official publication on Monday, adding that order intake in the unit would certainly be higher than 3 billion euros.

In 2009, the unit’s order intake was 2.9 billion euros.

However, Stahlmann said that revenues of the unit — which also makes turbines for power plants and produces engines for container and cruise ships — would remain stable in 2010 compared with the pre-year level of about 3.8 billion euros.

Stahlmann — who became head of the Diesel & Turbo unit at the beginning of the year — added that its operations would expand in Brazil: “This can happen through an acquisition or through setting up a plant,” he was quoted.

He also denied that the company was intending to sell the unit: “There are persistent rumours about that but there is nothing to it,” he said. ($1=.7453 euros) (Reporting by Christoph Steitz; Editing by Greg Mahlich)

The Latest Odds for Brazil to Win the World Cup With Victor Chandler

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, Jun 24 (MARKET WIRE) —
The 2010 World Cup is starting to warm up and World Cup betting
specialists Victor Chandler make Brazil the latest favourites to win this
competition for a sixth time. You can bet on Brazil to win the World Cup
at odds of 4/1 after their impressive 3-1 win over Ivory Coast, a result
which means they are likely to top Group G.

Spain would have been knocked out of the World Cup if they had lost to
Honduras on Monday, although that never seemed likely after David Villa’s
brilliant strike had given them the lead. Victor Chandler now have
Vicente Del Bosque’s team available at 9/2 on their outright market,
although they could still face the Brazilians at the last sixteen stage.

Sandwiched in between these two teams are Argentina, a team that started
the World Cup as 7/1 chances and are now into 9/2 after three impressive
performances. Lionel Messi has yet to start scoring in South Africa,
although he could prove to be highly dangerous and it appears as though
Diego Maradona is getting the best from his players.

The Netherlands are the fourth favourites to win the 2010 World Cup after
a solid start to their campaign in South Africa. Victor Chandler offer
World Cup odds of 8/1 about Bert Van Marwijk’s team, who have yet to
concede a goal during the tournament so far.

England could be out of the World Cup on Wednesday night, although they
could also go through to the last sixteen as group winners. Ironically,
if they do beat Slovenia, they have a fairly reasonable path through to
the semi-finals (in theory) and Victor Chandler offer odds of 9/1 that
England win the World Cup, something which could still turn out to be a
great bet.

Drogba confirmed in Ivory Coast team

(Reuters) – Didier Drogba returns to the starting lineup for the Ivory Coast against Brazil in their World Cup Group G match Sunday.

Sports

The Ivory Coast captain and leading scorer broke his forearm in a friendly against Japan in Switzerland just over two weeks ago and came on as a substitute in the goalless draw against Portugal wearing a protective plastic cast.

Drogba replaced Gervais Kouassi, the only change in the Elephants’ starting line-up.

Brazil named the same team which struggled to a 2-1 win over in their opening match last Tuesday.

Kaka, who is still not 100 percent fit after an injury-plagued season, was included in the starting line-up although coach Dunga said on the eve of the match that it was not certain whether he would play the whole game.

Portugal plot three-phased attack on North Korea

(Reuters) – Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz plans three-phased assault on what he expects to be a highly defensive North Korea on Monday as he plots a course through Group G into the last 16 of the World Cup.

Sports

After their goalless draw with Ivory Coast and a daunting clash with Brazil still to come, Monday’s clash with the tournament’s rank outsiders will make or break Portugal’s chances of progress.

A win is obviously essential but Queiroz said the need for a boost to their goal difference can only be factored in once the foundations are set.

“It is an extremely important game, decisive for the final placings. It’s all or nothing as far as we are concerned and the players are well aware of that,” Queiroz told reporters after his team trained at Green Point stadium on Sunday.

“We will play tomorrow with three issues, which we can’t confuse.

“First, we have to play entertaining, enthusiastic and rapid football, much faster than against Ivory Coast, to find a way to win.

“Then we have to score goals but we can’t even talk about that until we have scored one. Then, after all that, we can look at the league table.

“It is a phased approach, we cannot start at the end.”

Having seen North Korea defend so diligently against Brazil Queiroz knows his team will have to be creative to find a way through.

“We have to play with our intelligence,” he said. “Sometimes it is said that the most direct route is circular and we certainly can’t spend the game banging our heads against the wall.

“Ivory Coast defended from midfield but from what we saw against Brazil, North Korea will sit much deeper. We have to use our technical prowess, especially in the last third, to force them into errors.”

One of the keys best suited to unlocking such a massed defense is a player with outstanding individual skill and Queiroz is fortunate that in Cristiano Ronaldo he has one of the absolute best in that department.

Though he has not scored an international goal for 16 months Ronaldo remains confident that having got the first game out of the way, the 2006 semi-finalists will find their feet.

“The most difficult phase is over, we were anxious in that first game, many of the players had not been at a World Cup before and we knew it would be complicated,” he said.

“There are fewer pressures now, I think we have overcome the greatest barrier and will win tomorrow.

“As for me, the goals will surface tomorrow or next year, I have faith. If I don’t score that’s not the end of the world, the issue is for us to win.

“If it’s a large margin then all the better but 1-0 will be satisfactory because we don’t fear Brazil. They are a great team, five-time champions, but we are going to face them in the last game with the belief we can win.”

Injured Deco out of Portugal match with North Korea

(Reuters) – Portugal midfielder Deco has been ruled out of their Group G match against North Korea on Monday due to a thigh injury he picked up during Friday’s training session, the player’s spokesman said.

Sports

“Deco has been ruled of the second match by Portugal’s medical department. He injured his upper right thigh in the Friday’s training in Magaliesburg, and underwent treatment during the following two days but with no improvement,” Acaz Felleger, the player’s spokesman, said in a statement on Sunday.

“He is with the Portuguese delegation in Cape Town and hopes to play against Brazil in Portugal’s third match on Thursday,” Felleger added.

Deco played 62 minutes in Portugal’s 0-0 draw against the Ivory Coast on Tuesday, before being substituted by Tiago.

Gates disappointed by Turkey vote on Iran sanctions

June 11 (Reuters) – U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Friday he was disappointed by Turkey’s decision to vote against a U.N. Security Council resolution on sanctions against Iran but said it would not affect U.S.-Turkish military cooperation.

“I was disappointed by the Turkey vote in the Iranian sanctions. That said, Turkey is a decades-long ally of the United States and other members of NATO,” Gates said after a meeting of NATO defence ministers in Brussels.

“Turkey continues to play a critical part in the alliance,” he said.

Turkey, a key NATO member, joined Brazil in voting against the U.N. resolution on Wednesday, but the resolution still passed and the world powers are moving ahead with tighter sanctions on Tehran.

Portugal arrive with Nani in doubt for warm-up

Portugal winger Nani is doubtful for their friendly against Mozambique due to a shoulder injury picked up in training in Lisbon, he said as the squad flew in to South Africa for the World Cup on Sunday.

The winger missed the squad’s final home training session in Portugal on Saturday after falling while attempting an acrobatic shot and causing a traumatism in his shoulder.

He is due to be re-examined before the warm-up match against Mozambique on Tuesday.

“I feel better already,” Nani told reporters during the flight from Lisbon to Johannesburg.

On playing in the friendly, he said: “I really don’t know, now we have to see. When we get there we’ll have to check again.”

The other main injury concern in the Portuguese squad is Pepe, who has been recovering from a knee injury he sustained in December.

He has not played since but was last week cleared by doctors from the national side and his club Real Madrid to travel to the finals.

The Brazil-born defender signalled he could already be an option for coach Carlos Queiroz against Mozambique.

“I’m in the group. I’m here to help and now the matter is in the coach’s hands,” Pepe said as he boarded the plane.

Portugal play their first tournament match on June 15 against the Ivory Coast in Group G, which also includes Brazil and North Korea.

Scolari confirms departure from Uzbek club

World Cup winning coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has left Uzbekistan side Bunyodkor to “help his son’s university education”.

Scolari quit the club after a year in charge having failed to achieve success in the Asian Champions League, the Uzbek side losing to Saudi club Al Hilal in the last 16 earlier this month.

“Main reason of leaving Uzbekistan is (I’m) concerned with my son’s studying,” Scolari told the team’s website (www.fcbunyodkor.com) late on Friday.

“He just graduated from Tashkent International School and is about to study in university. I need to support and help him now. My family and children is most important for me.”

The former Brazil, Portugal and Chelsea coach said that he would not decide upon his next job until after his son’s university place was agreed.

“Maybe, my son won’t wish to stay in Portugal, so I can’t say anything about my next work place,” said Scolari, who admitted to having offers from unnamed clubs in Europe, Brazil and Asia.

Scolari, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002 and reached the final of Euro 2004 with Portugal, told Reuters on Monday that the club was trying to reduce costs and had suggested cutting short his contract, which was due to expire in December.

Can Bafana Bafana keep host streak alive?

Johannesburg, May 26 (DPA) Every host nation of the previous 18 World Cups has advanced past the first round. That streak is in serious peril as South Africa face a paramount task of even gathering a point at the 2010 World Cup.

Bafana Bafana have one of the most successful coaches in World Cup history in Brazilian Carlos Albert Parreira, Brazil’s 1994 cup-winning coach who is at the World Cup for the sixth time with his fifth different nation.

The South Africans also have upwards of 70,000 fans tooting vuvuzelas live in the stadium at each game as well as tens of millions rooting for them on the streets and in their homes.

But, unfortunately they also face the daunting Group A with matches against World Cup veterans such as Mexico, two-time world champions Uruguay and 1998 winners and 2006 finalists France.

‘This group is very tough. By chance, the first World Cup was played 80 years ago in Uruguay. And Uruguay, Mexico and France all played in it… So they are in the business for 80 years. People forget about this sometimes,’ said Parreira.

‘Of course the World Cup means a lot. We have a big responsibility for the country. The country who hosts the World Cup always wants to do well. I am not thinking about what happens if the team doesn’t advance from the first round. I’m not going to place this on my players’ shoulders. This (a host nation not reaching the second stage) will happen one day. We just have to do our best.’

Parreira did not have a qualifying campaign to get his team ready for the World Cup, putting them through a series of friendly matches instead. The 67-year-old Brazilian also held two extended training camps in Brazil and Germany in March and April with his South Africa-based players. His goal was to form the shape of the team and then his overseas players would fit in.

Parreira’s men have shown they have talent and can play competitive football when spurred on by the home crowd. At the 2009 Confederations Cup, they narrowly lost to Brazil in the semi-finals and to Spain in the game for third place.

The coach knows his team will be young and rather small and he will rely on a quick passing-oriented game, which he feels suits his players best.

The key to Bafana Bafana’s showing in South Africa 2010 may be the performance of the nation’s prize player Steven Pienaar of Everton, especially since the country’s most successful striker Benni McCarthy will come to the World Cup with a lack of game experience since he has been out of favour at West Ham United.

South Africa have a storied sports past, especially in rugby but also by winning the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations. But Bafana Bafana will have a hard time reaching the minimum goal of getting beyond the first round.

THE COACH – CARLOS ALBERTO PARREIRA

Apart from winning the 1994 World Cup with Brazil, Carlos Alberto Parreira is best remembered for being in charge of four different countries at the World Cup (Kuwait, 1982; United Arab Emirates, 1990; Brazil, 1994 and 2006; and Saudi Arabia, 1998). Only Bora Milutinovic has one more country in his resume.

The well-travelled 67-year-old coach, who has had stints in several Middle Eastern countries, as well as Turkey, came under criticism during his earlier tenure with the South African team and in April 2008 resigned, citing his wife’s health problems the reason.

He was brought back when the South African Football Association parted ways with his successor Joel Santana.

THE STAR – STEVEN PIENAAR

Steven Pienaar is probably as close as South Africa gets to having an international star. The 28-year-old Johannesburg-born midfielder is a regular in the Premier League with his club Everton and has been linked with a move to a bigger club.

He started playing for the School of Excellence before signing his first professional contract with Ajax Cape Town. After impressing for the Ajax Amsterdam feeder club, he was brought to the Netherlands, where he played an important part in helping the Dutch club win the league in 2002 and 2004.

A less spectacular move to Borussia Dortmund followed. He was then sent to Everton on loan, before making the move permanent.

FACTBOX – Penalty shootouts

The 2010 soccer World Cup kicks off in South Africa on June 11 and many matches could be decided by penalty shootouts.

In the knock-out phase, which starts on June 26 and ends with the final on July 11, games which are drawn after extra time will be decided by penalty shootouts. Five players from each side take a kick, and then, if the scores are level, a “sudden-death” process starts.

Since the format was introduced in 1982 there have been 20 shootouts in seven tournaments.

The following is the success rates for countries in past World Cup penalty shootouts, and results from the previous 20 shootouts (source: Fifa.com):

Brazil takes top ranking into World Cup; Spain 2nd

Brazil will head to the World Cup as the number one team, according to the latest FIFA rankings.

The five-time world champion retained top spot ahead of European champion Spain in Wednesday’s release of the final monthly rankings before the June 11 World Cup kickoff.

Portugal is third followed by the Netherlands and world champion Italy. Germany is sixth, edging Argentina and England.

France moves up one to No. 9, trading places with Croatia which did not qualify for the World Cup.

The United States at No. 14 heads the three World Cup qualifiers from CONCACAF.

Cameroon at No. 19 is best of the six African World Cup teams, and No. 20 Australia leads Asia’s four qualifiers.

Host South Africa is No. 83, and No. 105 North Korea is the lowest-ranked qualifier.

Brazil top rankings, South Africa jump seven places

Brazil remained top of the latest FIFA rankings on Wednesday while World Cup hosts South Africa jumped seven places after winning two friendly matches.

There were no changes in the top five with Brazil followed by Spain, Portugal, Netherlands and Italy. South Africa moved from 90th to 83rd after wins over Jamaica and Thailand.

The top ten includes one team, Croatia, who did not qualify for the World Cup. The lowest-ranked of the 32 World Cup finalists are North Korea who climbed one place to 105th. (Reporting by Brian Homewood in Berne)

Russian support for sanctions “not acceptable”-Iran

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Wednesday Russian support for new U.N. sanctions against Iran was unacceptable and called on President Dmitry Medvedev to rethink his support for Washington’s stance.

“We shouldn’t see, at sensitive times, our neighbour (Russia) supporting those who have been against us, have shown animosity to us for 30 years. This is not acceptable for the Iranian nation. I hope they will pay attention and take corrective action,” Ahmadinejad said in a televised speech in the south-eastern city of Kerman.

He also said a deal Iran made with Turkey and Brazil to ship some of its enriched uranium abroad was a “great opportunity” that U.S. President Barack Obama should seize. (Reporting by Robin Pomeroy; Editing by Charles Dick)

Iran’s IAEA envoy says not handed over fuel swap letter

Iran’s representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Sunday Iran had not yet delivered a letter to the agency outlining its nuclear fuel swap deal agreed last week with Brazil and Turkey.

“We have not handed in the letter,” Ali Asghar Soltanieh told Reuters. Iran’s IRNA news agency reported earlier on Sunday that Soltanieh had given the letter to the IAEA chief.

Iranian officials said the letter would be handed in on Monday.
