Blind boy, 4, has ‘dolphin’ vision

London, April 30 (ANI): A four-year-old blind boy named Jamie Aspland uses echolocation to see – just like dolphins.

Jamie makes clicking noises with his tongue that makes him virtually know where things around him are lying.

“It””s amazing,” his 39-year-old mother Deborah says, “Since learning the skill we can walk to the park and Jamie no longer has to hold my hand.”

Jamie – a twin who was born blind – was taught the revolutionary technique by a US expert.

Deborah says that Jamie became an expert of the technique after taking just three lessons, reports The Sun.

Jamie is one of the few children in the world who have been taught how to copy dolphins by Californian Daniel Kish, who is himself blind.

Kish names his echo-location skill as “flash-sonar”.

“It provides one with information of a fair amount of detail at distances of dozens of metres.

“Working with Jamie and his family was terrific. He he was very responsive,” he said.

“Knowing Jamie can be safe and will understand what is happening, where the traffic is and what””s around him, will really help,” Deborah said. (ANI)

Sir Elton John plans to adopt 14-month-old Ukranian boy

London, September 13 (ANI): Sir Elton John is planning to adopt a child from Ukraine with partner David Furnish.

The singer revealed that a 14-month-old boy called Lev has apparently “stolen his heart.”

The child had performed at an orphanage in Ukraine while the ‘Candle In The Wind’ hitmaker was on a visit.

The 62-year-old confessed that he had always avoided adopting someone because of his age and continuous tours.

“David and I have always talked about adoption, David always wanted to adopt a child and I always said ‘no’ because I am 62 and I think because of the travelling I do and the life I have, maybe it wouldn’t be fair for the child,” the BBC News quoted him as saying.

“But having seen Lev today, I would love to adopt him. I don’t know how we do that but he has stolen my heart. And he has stolen David’s heart and it would be wonderful if we can have a home. I’ve changed my mind today,” he added.

The death of Elton’s long-term keyboardist, Guy Babylon, has influenced him too.

He said: “Last week I lost one of my best friends; my keyboard player died of a heart attack at 52.

“It broke my heart because he was such a genius and so young and has two wonderful children.

“What better opportunity to replace someone I lost than to replace him with someone I can give a future to.” (ANI)

Pak diplomat tells UK to stop treating it like a ‘whipping boy’

London, Sep.9 (ANI): A top Pakistani diplomat has reacted strongly to Britain’s accusations regarding Pakistan harbouring extremists plotting to attack the UK.

The diplomat charged Britain of not doing enough to tackle home grown terrorists and treating Pakistan as a “whipping boy”.

“Sometimes for our British friends the truth is bitter. We have somehow turned out to be a ‘whipping boy’, there is a long history to that. The British need to search their own house. Britain has to take responsibility and they have to look into the issues which are driving these youth to extremism, which is the third-generation British – they weren’t born and bought up in Pakistan,” The Guardian quoted the diplomat, who refused to be named, as saying.

Referring to the massive airliners bombing plot, he said the terrorists who were nabbed and convicted were ‘born and brought up’ in Britain, and not in Pakistan.

The diplomat underlined that it was the Pakistani intelligence agencies that had tipped Britain regarding the plot following which it was unearthed.

He said the plotters would have succeeded in their plans if the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) had not shared reports with London.

“It was Pakistan that informed Britain about this plot. We tipped them off, it was our security agency that tipped off the British … the British authorities were very much indebted to Pakistan. We had a major role in unearthing this plot. Had it not been for Pakistan (it) would not have been unearthed,” he said.

It may be recalled that Prime Minister Gordon Brown, during his Islamabad visit earlier this year, had said: “Three-quarters of the most serious plots investigated by the British authorities have links to Al-Qaida in Pakistan.”

Brown’s statement had angered Pakistani leadership and strained relationship between two countries, but things normalized later with President Asif Ali Zardari visit to the UK. (ANI)

Spielberg, Smith’s plans to remake ‘Old Boy’ thrown into jeopardy

London, Jun 30 (ANI): American film director Steven Spielberg and actor Will Smith’s plans to remake cult Korean movie ‘Old Boy’ have been thrown into jeopardy, as the original makers of the 2003 hit are allegedly not authorised to grant a remake.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Spielberg and Smith had recently secured the rights to modernise director Park Chan-Wook’s film from producers Show East.

But Show East filmmakers have found themselves at the centre of a lawsuit from Futabasha bosses, the Japanese publishers of the original manga series, who claim the producers were in no position to negotiate with the Hollywood heavyweights and Universal studios.

Seoul-based Show East has since shut down and its executives have ceased all contact with Futabasha, further complicating legal proceedings, which began last week.

“We haven’t been able to confirm that Show East is bankrupt, and at this stage we’re not sure what effect this will have on the legal case,” the Daily Star quoted a spokesperson for Futabasha as saying.

But, Universal bosses are refusing to halt pre-production on Spielberg and Smith’s planned version and have given them the green light to continue work on the forthcoming movie. (ANI)

Manchester City eyes Chelsea’s bad boy Drogba

London, May 15 (ANI): Manchester City is ready to make a 15million pound swoop for Chelsea’s bad boy Didier Drogba.

Boss Mark Hughes made a firm inquiry about the Ivory Coast striker in January and, although he was knocked back, the Londoners admitted a summer move was a possibility.

Now, City wants to push through a three-year deal, worth around 150,000 pound a week, as soon as the window reopens.

Hughes is desperate to recruit a powerful front man after cooling his interest in Blackburn’s Roque Santa Cruz, The Sun reports.

Drogba’s Stamford Bridge future was up in the air even before last week’s foul-mouthed television rant following their Champions League knock out.

There is a split within Chelsea over whether to keep him or not but City’s offer for a 31-year-old, who has been plagued by injury problems, would be hard to ignore.

Meanwhile, Hughes insists he has no fears about his future at City. The Eastlands boss said: “People talking about me and my job is just water off a duck’s back.

“But from within the club I feel I’m getting some credit. I have two years left on my contract at the moment. My view is I’ll be here next year,” he added. (ANI)

He also claims that Boyle has fallen for the former editor and has even declared him to be “gorgeous”, and Morgan, 44, has even asked her out on a dinner date.

“It’s not a joke. She clearly has something for Piers Morgan. She told me that. She really likes him and Piers is keeping his promise to take her out,” he added. (ANI)
