Jail was just like school, says Boy George

London, April 26 (ANI): British singer Boy George has said that the time spent by him behind the bars was just like being at school.

The 48-year-old star was given an early release Pentonville prison in May 2009 after he was sentenced to 15 months in prison for assaulting and

falsely imprisoning a rent boy, reports The Daily Express.

“There was a daunting moment as I was being led to my cell with everyone shouting my name or singing Karma Chameleon, it was surreal,” George

said.

“After six days, I was transferred to a category B prison in Suffolk. Somehow I found a way of coping. I was put to work as a cook in the kitchen,

which I enjoyed, even though I had to wear a really dodgy white outfit, which was depressing. I was assuming that it would be a nightmare but people

were fine. There were a few days when I thought: ‘Oh God, what has happened to me,’ but generally people were very nice to me. I was surprised,” he

added.

“In many respects it was like being back at school. I made friends, I got bored, I read a lot of books and I had a lot of time to think and plan ahead,”

George said comparing his school life and the life in prison.

The singer was given an early release for good behaviour just four months after he was sent to jail. But he admitted that he was doubtful about

returning to normal life as a free man.

“I’d become institutionalised. I’d felt safe in prison. I have a profile, so I worried about the stuff I’d have to deal with when I came out. Everyone

inside had told me I wouldn’t remember prison. I didn’t believe them but they were right,” George said.

George has finished his UK tour and has released his first new single in ten years named Amazing Grace. (ANI)

Amy Winehouse’s tattoo artist is HIV-positive

Henry Hate, 40, said that he knew the risks involved, but the disease was not something he could tell everyone about.

“I’m professional and know the risk factors involved. I take every precaution,” the Sun quoted him as saying.

“I don’t think it’s something I should brag about. It’s a personal thing. I don’t tell the general public.

“But some of my close customers who I have had for years are very aware.

“There are a few celeb clients who have known for a while – but I don’t tell all my friends,” he added.

Hate, who runs the Prick Tattoo and Piercing parlour in Shoreditch, East London, insists that he always wears gloves while etching with single-use needles, but news of him being HIV-positive still freaks people out.

‘Petrified’ Boy George thinks “he’ll be killed in jail”

London, Jan 18 (ANI): Fallen pop idol Boy George revealed his jail fears to a fellow prisoner in a court holding cell before he was sent to tough Pentonville Prison in North London.

He was held there after a judge sentenced him to 15 months for falsely imprisoning Norwegian male escort Audun Carlsen, 29, and thrashing him with a chain, reports the Mirror.

Richard Lyttle, 40, held in the same cells on a driving charge, said: “When I walked into the cell I saw this fat, bald bloke sitting in the corner crying like a baby. He was shaking like a leaf, a total wreck.

“He kept sobbing over and over, ‘I can’t go to jail – I’ll be killed.’

“He was crying about how he was just a fat old pop star that everyone was laughing at.”

George was put in a holding cell at Snaresbrook Court, East London, with five other men on Friday afternoon.

Lyttle, from Romford, East London, said that as he walked into the cell one of the other prisoners was hurling abuse at the gay singer.

“The bloke was shouting, ‘Don’t talk to him, he is a batty boy.’ (offensive Jamaican term for a homosexual).

“I walked over to him and said, ‘What’s the problem, mate?’

“He looked and me and said, ‘I’m George O’Dowd.’ I was confused and he screamed, ‘I’m Boy George.’ He broke down in tears and couldn’t stand up because he was so upset.

“All the other prisoners were shouting at him to stop making so much noise so he just kept his head bowed. I felt a bit sorry for him.”

Lyttle told the former Culture Club singer how to survive life at the category B prison.

He told George how he would have his mobile phone taken from him when he arrived and that he would be strip-searched before being put in a prison uniform and locked up.

“He was shaking as he listened and kept asking what other inmates would make of him. I warned him that because of who he was and because he was gay people would be out to beat him up,” Richard said.

“He said he felt all alone and wouldn’t be able to cope in prison. He was gutted, emotional and just all over the place,” he added. (ANI)

Boy George going to prison to save dying mum, says brother

London, Jan 16 (ANI): British singer Boy George’s decision not to take to the witness stand in his false imprisonment trial was to spare his mum any further heartache, according to the star’s brother.

The former Culture Club frontman, real name George O’Dowd, was convicted in December (08) of chaining Audun Carlsen to a hook in a bedroom at his east London apartment after suspecting him of tampering with his computer, reports the Mirror.

He had denied the one charge of false imprisonment – but stunned lawmakers when he refused to give evidence to defend himself at London’s Snaresbrook Crown Court.

And O’Dowd’s brother David reveals the singer confessed he would rather face a stint behind bars than hurt his beloved mother – who is battling ill health.

David said the troubled star told him: “I know the likelihood is I’m going to prison, but I couldn’t do it for mum’s sake. She’s dying.

“The only reason I didn’t give evidence was for her. She’s been through too much in her life already.”

O’Dowd will be sentenced on 16 January (09). The maximum term the charge carries is life imprisonment. (ANI)
