Las Vegas musical to celebrate Gloria Estefan’s life

London, May 4(ANI): The life of Latin pop star Gloria Estefan will be celebrated in a new autobiographical Las Vegas musical.

The show will be performed at the Tropicana Hotel-Casino in the Nevada gaming mecca. However, it will not feature performances of her biggest hits like Rhythm Is Gonna Get You, Turn The Beat Around and Anything For You by the singer herself, reports Sky News.

It will replace the famed showgirl revue Folies Bergere, a variety show that ended a 49-year run in 2008.

The 52-year-old Cuban-born singer hinted that she was planning “something big in Vegas” while accepting a star on the famous Walk of Stars.

Out of a career that bagged seven Grammy Awards and shifted more than 90 million albums worldwide, Estefan considers this project as “one of the most exciting things” to happen in her life.

Legendary Vegas show producer Bernie Yuman, best known for the Siegfried & Roy show, will produce the show. (ANI)

Mika to moonwalk in MJ’s shoes

London, Sep 18 (ANI): Beirut-born singer Mika is set to fill Michael Jackson’s shoes, for he has inherited the late King of Pop’s designer shoes, including the ones the late superstar was to moonwalk in onstage at London’s O2 Arena.

The ‘Thriller’ hit-maker had hired Mika’s good friend Christian Louboutin to design all the fancy footwear for his ‘This Is It’ concerts.

But after Michael’s sudden death, Mika, 26, ended up with the lot.

Mika, whose ‘The Boy Who Knew Too Much’ album will be out next week, has now talked about the shoes.

“Christian Louboutin designed all of Michael Jackson’s shoes that he was supposed to be wearing for the O2 concerts,” the Mirror quoted him as saying.

“So when he died, Christian asked if I wanted them for my tour. They are amazing. One is a black soft leather lace-up which goes up to the ankle to support Michael while he was dancing.

“Then there is the pair which must have been made for him to moonwalk in. They are gold with a metal toe and the soles are really smooth and slippy to make it easy to moonwalk in.

“I think they are the only pair I might not wear. It’s a little freaky to think he’d have worn those to do the moonwalk in.

“Then again, who knows, it might give me some magic power to help me dance rather than just jumping around the stage like an idiot,” he added. (ANI)

M.I.A. seeks Winfrey’s help to stop attacks on Sri Lankan Tamils

London, May 9 (ANI): British-born singer M.I.A., real name Mathangi Arulpragasam, has begged US talk show host Oprah Winfrey to help stop the attacks on Sri Lankan Tamils.

The singer, who was born in the UK to Sri Lankan parents, was a child when her father returned to the Asian country to join in the fight for a separate Tamil state there.

The battle between Tamil activists and the Sri Lankan Government has descended into bloody violence, and M.I.A. claims that thousands of civilians are regularly killed in bombing raids.

M.I.A., 31, had met Winfrey at a recent event to honour Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People.

Their meeting impressed her so much that she has now taken to her MySpace.com page to ask the media queen for help.

“She (Oprah) squeeeezed my hand so hard, I was convinced she cared. Michelle Obama gave a speech and there was mad secret service in the air so I didn’t get to throw a paper plane at her saying ‘stop the bombing of the Tamils in Sri Lanka’,” the Daily Star quoted her as writing.

“I wasn’t sure about my influence but……..if I do have any influence, I wish I could get the media to spotlight this… Oprah can you do something bout these camps pleeeeeeeeeease?” she added. (ANI)

Free Carla Bruni CDs to be given away in taxpayer-funded campaign

London, May 5 (ANI): Thousands of Carla Bruni CDs will be given away for free in a French campaign funded by the country’s taxpayers.

The Ministry of Agriculture will send the album, along with wine and cheese vouchers, across the world to promote international food and drink sales.

In return, the Government will ask people to host “Gallic evening” during which they will have to show France’s best products to their pals, and then write about their promotion on the Web.

But the initiative has left many frowning after being seen as a way to promote the wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy at the expense of taxpayers’ money, amounting up to as much as 1 million pounds.

Critic Gerald Andrieu tagged the Italian-born singer as “Carla-Antoinette”, drawing a comparison between the First Lady and French queen Marie Antoinette who was constantly pampered by husband, Louis XVI.

Andrieu, in the highbrow political weekly Marianne, added it would be no surprise if Bruni would become the poster girl for other French industries, including fashion.

“We wait with impatience the promotional week of haute couture. For Carla-Antoinette of Italy, it will perhaps be the occasion for her to get rid of her old dresses which she doesn’t want anymore,” the Telegraph quoted him as saying. (ANI)

Bob Geldof to get seat in House of Lords

Washington, May 4 (ANI): Bob Geldof is all set to get a seat in the U.K. parliament’s House of Lords as a reward for his 25-year crusade to end world poverty.

In 1985, a year after helping to organise charity concert Live Aid, the ex ‘Boomtown Rats’ singer was awarded an honorary knighthood.

Geldof staged a similar event, Live 8, in 2005.

Other than that his involvement in various philanthropic activities have earned him a life peerage from Queen Elizabeth II, who has included the rocker in her Birthday Honours list in June (09).

The Irish-born singer is eligible for the accolade because he now has London as his residence.

“His achievements are second to none and his ability to highlight important campaigns is admirable. He’ll be a fantastic ambassador for the House of Lords,” Contactmusic quoted a source as telling British tabloid The People. (ANI)
