Supreme Court issues notice to Gujarat Government on Jaswant book ban

New Delhi, Sep.1 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a notice to Gujarat Government on a petition filed by expelled BJP leader Jaswant Singh challenging the ban on his book — Jinnah: ndia, Partition-Independence.

The Narender Modi-led BJP government in Gujarat had banned his Jaswant Singh’s book alleging that it defamed the country’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

“Jaswant Singh’s book questions role of Sardar Patel during the partition of India as well as his patriotic spirit. This is an attempt to tarnish the image of Patel who is considered the architect of modern united India,” a statement issued by the state government had said.

“It is a bid to defame Patel by distorting historical facts. So, the state government has decided to ban the book with immediate effect for wider public interest. As per the ban, there cannot be sale, distribution or publication of the book in the state,” it said.

“The book has been banned because it contains defamatory references regarding Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who is considered as the architect of the modern India,” a senior minister in the state government had said.

The ban on Jaswant’s book came after he was expelled from the party during its Chintan Baithak in Shimla more than a fortnight ago.

Singh’s book, which has created a furore in India, is selling like hot cakes in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

Booksellers in the two cities had imported more than 3,000 copies on Saturday and sold them out by Monday morning.

Not only intellectuals, but people from different strata of society have also shown interest in the book, in which Singh has praised Jinnah and described him as a leader who had strong faith in united India, while blaming Sardar Patel for the partition in 1947.

“I have never seen such a response to any author in about 30 years of being in the book selling business,” a shopkeeper in Rawalpindi told Online.

“My basic purpose of buying this book is just to know what compelled the BJP to expel one of its senior leaders having a long association with the party,” said a reader.

The sale of the book is good; in fact it is better than that of any other book at the moment,” said another Islamabad-based bookseller.

Earlier, a famous book store in Lahore sold 100 copies of the book in a single day which indicates how eager the Pakistanis are to know the reason what prompted the BJP to expel the former Foreign Minister and end his 30 year long association with the party.

“We had received 100 copies on last Wednesday. All the copies were sold out the same day. Now we expect more copies on Saturday,” said Rana Saeed, the owner of the shop.

Excited by the response the book has received, its publishers are already considering to bring out an Urdu version of the book.

Singh was expected to visit Pakistan to launch the book, but his son Manvendra Singh said his father has not applied for a visa, and as far as he knew. (ANI)

Jaswant’s book on Jinnah selling like hot cakes in Pakistan

Islamabad, Sep 1 (ANI): Expelled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jaswant Singh’s controversial book, Jinnah: India, Partition-Independence, which has created a furore in India, is selling like hot cakes in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

The twin-city booksellers had imported more than 3,000 copies on Saturday and sold them out by Monday morning.

Not only intellectuals, but people from different strata of society have also shown interest in the book, in which Singh has praised Jinnah and described him as a leader who had strong faith in united India, while blaming Sardar Patel for the partition in 1947.

The book has created furore in India, as the author has been expelled from his party BJP and reviled as a ‘Jinnah Lover’.

“I have never seen such a response to any author in about 30 years of being in the book selling business,” a shopkeeper in Rawalpindi told Online.

“My basic purpose of buying this book is just to know what compelled the BJP to expel one of its senior leaders having a long association with the party,” said a reader.

‘Lolita’ novelist’s last work to be published

London, Apr 18 (ANI): An unfinished final work by Vladimir Nabokov, the author of ‘Lolita’, is to be published by Penguin later this year.

The Russian-born American novelist wrote The Original of Laura on 138 index cards, each of which will be reproduced with a transcript of their text on the facing page.

Nabokov left instructions after his death in 1977 that the unfinished work be destroyed. His son took the decision to publish last year.

Dimitri Nabokov apparently did so because his father also wanted Lolita, his most well known book, to be burned, reports The Telegraph.

According to The Bookseller magazine, Alexis Kirschbaum, editor at Penguin Classics, bought the book and rights to continue publishing the Nabakov backlist in a six-figure deal.

The Original of Laura will be published as a Penguin Classics hardback on November 3, priced 25 pounds.

It is narrated by a man infatuated with his promiscuous wife, thinking back to the start of his obsession when they were youths.

Kirschbaum, who described the book as both dark and comic, said: “In this novel he is also very interested in psychology and in what it means to hate yourself and want to disappear.” (ANI)

Fromage frais future book wins odd title prize

London, Mar 27 (ANI): ‘The 2009-2014 World Outlook for 60-milligram Containers of Fromage Frais’, a book on the future of tiny pots of fromage frais, has scooped the prize for oddest book title of 2008.

The book by Professor Philip M Parker landed The Diagram Prize for oddest book title of the year.

‘Baboon Metaphysics’ by Dorothy L Cheney and Robert M Seyfarth came in second place, and ‘Curbside Consultation of the Colon’ by Brooks D Cash in third.

The annual prize is run by the Bookseller magazine, reports The Telegraph.

Horace Bent, who runs the competition, said: “Given that three times in the 21st century the public have crowned somewhat vulgar titles the winner (High Performance Stiffened Structures, Living With Crazy Buttocks and, most recently, If You Want Closure In Your Relationship, Start With Your Legs), I assumed that either Strip And Knit With Style or Curbside Consultation Of The Colon would pick up the 2008 award.

“But I’m thrilled that the public steered clear of smut and bestowed the ‘odd title’ crown on Prof Parker’s worthy winner, and turned the supermarket chiller into the Petri dish of literary innovation.”

The competition organisers came up with a short list of six titles, which was then put to an Internet vote to find the winner.

Philip Stone, from the Bookseller, said the winner was a “fitting champion”.

He said: “What does the future hold for these items? Well, given that fromage frais normally comes in 60-gram containers, not 60-milligram, one would assume that the world outlook for 0.06-gram containers of fromage frais is pretty bleak. But I’m not willing to pay 795 pounds to find out.”

The other titles in the shortlist were Strip And Knit With Style by Mark Hordyszynski, which came fourth, The Large Sieve And Its Applications by Emmanuel Kowalski in fifth and Techniques For Corrosion Monitoring by Lietai Yang in sixth.

Bent added: “The fact that this book has been crowned the winner just goes to show how creative and diverse the publishing world is today. And, perhaps, how important a copy editor is.” (ANI)

Celeb chef Jamie Oliver becomes UK’s biggest selling author

London, Mar 25 (ANI): British chef Jamie Oliver has become the country’s biggest selling author after sales of his cookbooks leapt by more than 20 per cent last year.ith his latest cookery book, Jamie’s Ministry of Food, Oliver pipped Khaled Hosseini, James Patterson and J.K. Rowling by pulling down more than 11.5 million pounds in sales in 2008.

However, things were not so bright for Nigella Lawson, who saw revenue from her books drop by 35 per cent, reports The Telegraph.

Philip Stone and Tom Tivnan from The Bookseller magazine, who compiled the figures from market research company Neilsen Bookscan, said: “Nigella Lawson’s seasonal title Nigella’s Christmas was never going to match the huge 2007 hit Nigella Express and her sales slumped accordingly.”

Delia Smith’s How to Cheat at Cooking was also a success of 2008.

The success of Delia’s and Jamie’s titles could mark a move away from cookbooks that offer elaborate but time-consuming food. (ANI)

6 Brit books with the ‘strangest’ titles ever shortlisted for Diagram award

London, Feb 21 (ANI): The bookseller magazine has picked up six British books with ‘strangest’ titles, which will be awarded this year.

The book with the ‘strongest’ title will be given the Diagram Prize for Oddest Book Title of the Year.

The Diagram Prize for Oddest Book Title was devised in 1978 by Bruce Robertson from The Diagram Group, when he got bored at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

“In this, the 31st year of the prestigious award, never have I found it so problematic to pick a shortlist of just 6.

At a time when the economic climate is forbidding and cost-cutting companies are ten-a-penny, I’m proud to report that the British publishing industry has remained as stubborn in the face of change as ever,” the Telegraph quoted Horace Bent, from the Bookseller magazine, as saying.

“Given the economic gloom, I would not have blamed publishers if they’d decided to slash their lists. But it gives me great pleasure to report that diversity lives!” he added.

The books with the ‘Strangest’ titles shortlisted this year arte as follows:.Baboon Metaphysics by Dorothy Dorothy L Cheney and Robert M Seyfarth (University of Chicago Press)

2.Curbside Consultation of the Colon by Brooks D Cash (SLACK Incorporated)

3.The Large Sieve and its Applications by Emmanuel Kowalski (Cambridge University Press)
