May gold imports fall

India’s gold imports fell an annual 39% in May, as record prices hit demand in the world’s top consumer at a time when sales were expected to rise because of a Hindu festival. May imports fell to around 17-18 tonne from 28.6 tonne in the same month a year ago, the head of Bombay Bullion Association (BBA) Suresh Hundia, said on Friday. Jet Airways sacks three pilot, calls strike illegal

New Delhi, Sep. 8 (ANI): Jet Airways, which had to cancel 190 flights by 2 p.m. on Tuesday due to mass sick leave taken by its pilots, has sacked three pilots.

The airliner has called the agitation illegal, and has secured a restraint order from Bombay High Court against any strike.

“The Bombay High Court has passed an order restraining any kind of strike,” Jet CEO Wolfgang Prock-Schauer was quoted as saying.

“We were assured by the National Aviators Guild last night that there would be no strike and we went by this assurance. But we were shocked by the mass sick leave by about 360 pilots… it is nothing but a simulated strike,” he added.

The Jet pilots have been protesting the sacking of two of their colleagues by the management for reportedly joining the guild.

Asked what action the management would take against the striking pilots and if the two-sacked pilots could be reinstated, Prock-Shauer declined to comment.

Prock-Schauer also said that he was confident about normal services by Wednesday.

“The matter is on in the Labour Commission and we would not like to comment,” he said.

Jet Airways had earlier sought the Directorate General of Civil Aviation”s (DGCA) intervention to resolve the crisis.

Last month, Jet Airways had terminated the services of two of its senior most pilots, saying their services were not required after both formed a trade union body within the company.

A conciliatory meeting was called on August 31 between the Jet Airways management and the union, which claims to have representation of over 650 pilots.

Jet Airways has 1000 pilots on its rolls.

Although the National Aviators Guild (NAG) has decided not to go on the proposed strike, its members have decided on an alternate course of protest like going on mass casual leave to hamper operations of the private carrier. (ANI)

Anil Ambani welcomes government’s fresh plea on gas row dispute with brother Mukesh

Mumbai, Sep 2 (ANI): Anil Ambani of Reliance Natural Resource Limited (RNRL) welcomed a fresh application filed by central government in the Supreme Court on a row over gas price with estranged elder brother Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Limited (RIL).

Top Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries, headed by Mukesh Ambani, and Reliance Natural, led by Anil Ambani, have been fighting over terms of a gas-supply agreement struck when the Reliance empire was split in 2005.

The fresh application by the government said that the government’s policies and contracts on production and gas pricing would prevail over any private arrangement.

“Reliance Natural Resource on behalf of its over 26 lakh shareholders is grateful to the Government of India for its neutral stand in proposing these amendments,” Anil Ambani told reporters in Mumbai.

“With the filing of application, the role of government in Reliance Natural Resource-RIL matter remains limited only to interpretation of just two issues. Issue A – the gas utilisation policy and issue B – provisions of the Production Sharing Contract. This is exactly the same scope of intervention that was permitted to the government of India by the Bombay High Court,” he added.

The latest tussle between the feuding brothers, which stems from the 2005 break-up of the Reliance empire built by their father, has raised concerns it could discourage investment in the sector as India scrambles to shore up its energy security.

In July, India’s apex court said it would club all petitions and applications in the case together.

The Indian government had earlier made a petition to intervene in the case, arguing that the gas is ‘state property’ and that the private agreement between the Ambanis over the gas is not valid. (ANI)

‘Facebook for Parsees’ may help revive Zoroastrianism

London, Aug 22 (ANI): Facebook has united millions of long-lost school friends and lovers. And now, the popular social networking site has raised hopes of helping revive a religion: Zoroastrianism.

The 3,500-year-old religion, which is on the brink of extinction, is possibly the world’s wealthiest and most influential faith. However, it is losing its Midas touch, reports The Times.

Bachelors belonging to the religion, whose fire-worshipping followers subscribe to the teachings of the prophet Zoroaster, tend to marry late, and, as far as women are concerned some of them wed outside the community. As a result they’re excommunicated.

Because of this, there are only 120,000 Zoroastrians left, a third of whom are over 60.

Also, the diminishing birth rate has raised fears that adherents – known as Parsees in India, the religion’s main stronghold – are dying out.

Now, the community is counting on a website designed to create a database of its young that will encourage them to intermarry.

It is being billed as a kind of “Facebook for Parsees” that will place a heavy emphasis on matrimonial matters.

Tashan Mistree, 26, one of the Parsees behind the project, said: “The matrimonial part is important if we want to preserve our ethnicity … That we are a small community means that every individual matters.”

The site, which will be open to Parsees between 15 and 40, will foster a sense of ethnic identity among members with information about community events and will include a careers portal.

“It’s crazy, but for years this religion had not cared for the views of anybody under 75,” said Jimmy Mistry, a prominent Parsee in Mumbai.

“The young had been driven away,” Mistry added.

The social network is being developed by the youth wing of the Bombay Parsee Panchayat (BPP), a Mumbai-based governing council that is one of Zoroastrianism’s most influential seats of power. (ANI)

Delhi Stock Exchange teams up with IBM to re-start its operations

New Delhi, July 15 (ANI): IBM today announced that it has signed a 10-year information technology (IT) services agreement with Delhi Stock Exchange, one of the leading stock exchanges in India. As part of this Rs 11 crore agreement,

IBM will provide business continuity and disaster recovery services to DSE as well as remotely host and manage its IT infrastructure.

This will help the exchange meet the stringent business continuity guidelines as laid out by Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) before it could resume its operations after a hiatus of six years. By engaging with IBM in a complete operational expenditure (pay-as-you-go) model, DSE will also save 100 percent capital expenditure on IT.

Signed in June 2009, this agreement demonstrates IBM’s focus to help clients ‘Do more with Less’ by engaging in an increasingly popular operational expense (opex) model. It also leverages IBM’s global experience of over 40 years to provide business continuity and resiliency services to help clients minimize the costs and time-frames associated with recovering business operations in the event of a disaster.

DSE was one of country’s largest stock exchanges – almost at par with Bombay Stock Exchange in the 90′s, and has been in existence for over 60 years.

In 2002, however, the exchange became inactive due to negligible trading volumes. Seven years later, the exchange is now looking at resurrecting itself to its former glory-one where it used to be bustling with over 2,800 companies listed.

IBM will play a key role in helping DSE go live for trading by providing a highly secure environment and a robust resiliency solution with the goal of zero data loss once the exchange becomes operational later this year.

“As DSE looks to claim back its position as one of country’s leading stock exchanges, the agreement with IBM couldn’t have happened at a better time,” said Mr HS Sidhu, Executive Director and CEO, Delhi Stock Exchange. “As the world’s leading IT services company, IBM will bring immense value to the exchange by providing time-tested and world-class managed services-that would help DSE become operational and successful once again.”

Vijay Gupta, Chairman – Business Development Committee, Delhi Stock Exchange remarked, “DSE will play a key role in the stock trading landscape of India, once re-launched. IBM’s commitment to helping DSE achieve that goal is commendable. IBM’s strong value proposition of providing managed services in an opex model was also one of the key reasons why DSE decided to choose IBM for this strategic relationship.”

Under this agreement, IBM will build, host and manage the entire disaster recovery infrastructure for DSE from its data center. IBM will also provide 24×7 monitoring services for hardware and networking devices from its command center.

Neeraj Sharma, Director, Integrated Technology Services, IBM India/South Asia, “Companies today want to do more with less in these economically challenging times. DSE’s trust in IBM is a testament to IBM’s value proposition and world-class capabilities to help its clients improve the operational efficiency and cost effectiveness as well as accelerate time-to-market for services.” (ANI)

Bombay HC issues notice to Praful Patel on election petition

Mumbai, July 11 (ANI): The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court has issued a notice to Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Praful Patel on a petition challenging his election from Bhandara-Gondia Lok Sabha constituency.

The Bench has asked Patel to file his reply by September 18 in response to a petition filed by BJP’s defeated candidate Shishupal Patle.

The petition filed under Section 80 of the Representation of Peoples’ Act has contended that Patel had resorted to ‘corrupt practices’ and his election expenditure was far more than the Rs 25 lakh ceiling prescribed by poll panel.

Patle also questioned the credibility of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). He claimed that the number of votes cast had been more than the number of voters listed, in as many as 73 booths.

Patle had won in 2004 election by a slender margin, while this time Patel settled the score with a win by over 2.5 lakh votes. (ANI)

India Inc. disappointed with Mukherjee’s budget for 2009-10

New Delhi/Mumbai, July 6 (ANI): India Incorporated on Monday reacted with disappointment to the proposals for Budget 2009-10 introduced by Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

It said that Mukherjee had remained silent on key points like the revamp of fuel policy, corporate tax, and the disinvestment roadmap.

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) benchmark Sensex suffered the biggest fall on any Budget day and in the year too by plunging over 869 points on the BSE on concerns at the high fiscal deficit (6.8 percent) set by the Union Budget.

The Sensex, which started coming down soon after the announcement of budgetary proposals, dipped below the 14,000-point level before closing 869.65 points down at 14,043.40, surpassing the hefty fall of 749 points on January 7.

The key index had touched the day’s low of 13,959.44 as all the heavyweight stocks led by Reliance Industries suffered a heavy loss 6.53 per cent. Besides the fiscal deficit, trading sentiment also affected as European stocks dipped to a seven-week low on worries that economic recovery might still be far way off. The 50-share National Stock Exchange index Nifty also tumbled by 258.55 points to 4,135.70, after hitting the day’s low of 4,133.70.

Banking sector stocks suffered the most, losing 8.17 per cent to 7,768.63, as ICICI Bank tumbled by 10 per cent and HDFC Bank by 5.88 per cent among lenders as the Budget did not have measures to open up the industry and on concerns that the borrowing plan will reduce the value of bond holdings, brokers said.

Apart from the fiscal deficit, the other worry for captains of industry was the hike in Minimum Alternate Tax from ten to fifteen percent.

The Nifty also gave a thumbs down to the budget announcements.

Mukherjee left the corporate tax, customs and excise duty structure unchanged. He abolished the Fringe Benefit Tax which was the bugbear of the industry. Also, the deadline for Corporate India’s demand for a rollout of Goods and Services Tax has been set as April 2010.

He left the Securities Tax unchanged but scrapped the Commodities Transaction Tax. (ANI)
