Education is the base for everything: Aamir Khan

Mumbai, May 21 (ANI): Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has said education is the base for everything and should be made accessible to everyone.

“For me, education is the big idea. I think that it”s the base for everything. When I say education, I mean education for all. When I say education, I also mean not just teaching the children any one particular subject but allowing them to bloom,” said Aamir Khan.

“Allowing and recognizing the uniqueness of each child, and helping each and every child to blossom…to empower children, and that is what I mean by education,” he added at an event to launch the special anniversary issue of Forbes magazine.

The 44-year-old actor further said the biggest change in the country would occur only when each and every child in the country would receive education and an improved quality of teaching.

“India is a vast country and I know it is not easy but that will be the big change. I think when every child in India gets education and a certain quality of education…what I mean by quality is really the kind of teachers we have, or the kind of teaching we do,” said Khan.

“For that, it is up to us, how much value as a society we give to teaching and if we give a lot of value to teaching, then the teaching will also improve,” he added. (ANI)

Union Human Resource and Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal and Union Minister for Urban Development Jaipal Reddy inaugurated the event here on Tuesday.

“Since the terrorist attacks, lawful Muslim travelers have extensively been subjected to unfair inspections, intrusive secondary searches, excessive questioning based on their names and ethnicity,” The Nation quoted the statement, as saying.

Moradabad artist makes portraits incorporating religious verses

Moradabad (UP), Aug 15 (ANI): A young artist from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh has mastered a unique technique to draw and sketch portraits based on different religious verses and thus spread the message of communal amity and peace.

Unlike artists who use different colours and shades for their paintings, this young artist named Juhaib, in his mid-20s, uses verses and passages from various religious scriptures or holy books to add zing to his portraits.

Juhaib developed these exceptional traits in his sketching with an aim to propagate oneness and harmony among all sections of society.

“I have tried to depict all religious faiths Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Christian in my sketches especially in our nation’s tri-colour flag where I have written the Quran’s verses in the saffron colour and the Bhagavad-Gita verses in green colour and in Gurumukhi script, I have made Ashok Chakra of the flag. Through my sketches I want to spread the message that we all belong to one country and are all under one flag,” said Juhaib.

Juhaib has also worked on several innovative ideas and themes such as sketching the portraits of freedom fighters to several Indian monuments.

“I have also made Taj Mahal using verses from the Holy Quran and I have not drawn or used any line or shade in making this portrait. Along with that I have prepared Bhagat Singh’s portrait repeatedly using the phrase ‘Hum Sab Ek Hain’ (All of us are one) in Urdu on it,” he said.

Juhaib has been practicing art from the age of six. What stands him out is his experimental approach towards art with a social message that provides him an edge over others.

Some of his notable works though not created with a religious links are the portraits of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan, tennis player Sania Mirza and revolutionary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. (ANI)

Munnabhai part three begins next year: Arshad Warsi

Munnabhai part three begins next year: Arshad Warsi

It was hard not to fall in love with the nutty Circuit and his brainless antics. Now Arshad Warsi, the Bollywood actor who played the character effortlessly in the two hit Munnabhai comedy films, says part three will go on the floors in 2010.

‘ ‘Munnabhai Chale Amerika’ will go on the floors next year and we’ll start shooting then onwards,’ Arshad told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

The actor, who will reprise his role as the rugged but loveable goon in the movie, also said that ‘everything’, including the script, ‘is ready for the film’.

Produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the third instalment in the hit series will also be directed by Rajkumar Hirani who helmed the first two films, ‘Munnabhai M.B.B.S.’ (2003) and ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’ (2006).

The film was held up after Sanjay Dutt, who essayed the title role of Munnabhai, was convicted for illegal possession of arms in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts. But now the actor is out on bail.

Arshad, who forayed into filmdom with Amitabh Bachchan’s home production ‘Tere Mere Sapne’ in 1996, hit the jackpot with the Munnabhai series. While Sanjay Dutt played the title role, Arshad was seen as his accomplice and their onscreen chemistry and comic timing succeeded in tickling the audiences’ funny bone.

Talking about his camaraderie with Sanjay, the 41-year-old said: ‘Sanju is a zero complex guy. He has no issues with anybody or anything. He is also not insecure like other actors who’d get other actors’ scenes chopped to keep their own part. It’s just too cool working with him and that is why our comic timing and everything match.’

Asked if there were any other actors he liked working with, he said: ‘I have fun (onscreen) with Riteish (Deshmukh), but Ajay (Devgan) and I are completely mad when we are together.’

Arshad’s next is ‘Short Kut – The Con Is On’ that releases July 10. Produced by Anil Kapoor, the film has been directed by Neeraj Vora and also stars Akshaye Khanna and Amrita Rao.

‘The film is actually not an out and out comedy…it’s got a story and it’s dramatic. But I bring in the humour in the film despite the fact that I am the villain and I play a bad guy. Akshaye and Amrita are the hero and heroine in the film,’ said the actor, who was last seen in the dud ‘Ek Se Bure Do’.

After the success of the Munnabhai series, Arshad has mostly been seen in comedies like ‘Golamaal Returns’, ‘Sunday’, ‘Dhamaal’ and ‘Golmaal: Fun Unlimited’.

When asked if doing comedies was a deliberate choice, he said: ‘There’s nothing I can do. I don’t have a choice…most of the scripts I get are comedy scripts. There are hardly any serious films coming my way. I’m a pretty good actor and I’m comfortable with both serious and comedy films. I’m not deliberately doing comedies.’

‘Moreover, there are only comedies being made. Out of 10, eight films are comedies. But as long as the script is good, I’ll do it. I don’t let a good character and a good script go,’ said the actor who got critical acclaim for his performance as a police officer in the crime thriller ‘Seher’.

His other future projects include ‘Ishqiya’ and ‘Kaun Bola’ and he is also waiting for part three of ‘Golmaal’.

Despite a mixed career with a subdued initial start, Arshad said, ‘I’d never regret anything in life’.

Indian fans mourn Michel Jackson’s death

New Delhi/ Mumbai, June 26 (ANI): Indian fans of Michael Jackson have expressed grief and shock at the sudden death of the Pop star whose musical genius overshadowed by a bizarre lifestyle and sex scandals.

As the news bulletins, radio airwaves and social networking sites remained flooded with tributes for a man called the “King of Pop” and “natural heir to Elvis”, Bollywood actor Govinda recalled that Michael Jackson used to be his favourite during college days.

“I want to say that when we were in college we used to hear a lot about Michael Jackson and used to appreciate him a lot. And we used to talk about him that he is a great star and he reached to that height. We heard a lot about his surgeries and he has always been in news. But all I can say is that god give his soul peace,” said Govinda.

Jacko’s fans in New Delhi expressed grief and shock over his death.

“Michael Jackson death has really shocked his fans across the world. I think he was this century’s greatest singer and dancer. He was also aiming for a return… comeback but I guess that wont happen now. I really feel saddened because of his death,” said Malvin, a local.

“Michael Jackson had fans not only in America but also all over the world. And his death that too at an early age is very-very shocking,” said Akshay Kapoor, another local.

The 50-year-old, whose towering musical legacy was tarnished by often-bizarre behaviour and sex scandals, was pronounced dead on Thursday after arriving at a Los Angeles hospital in full cardiac arrest.

The self-styled “King of Pop,” whose hits included “Thriller” and “Billie Jean,” leaves behind a mountain of debt and an unfulfilled series of comeback concerts set for London in July. Many hoped the shows would rake in millions and erase his financial troubles.

Jackson dominated the charts in the 1980s and sold an estimated 750 million records, a figure that is likely to rise with the expected posthumous re-release of his hits. “Thriller”, which came out in 1982, remains the best-selling album of all time.

Jackson also won 13 Grammy Awards, made boundary-breaking music videos and his slick dance moves were imitated by legions of fans, and fellow pop stars, around the world.

But his preference for the company of children, high-pitched voice, numerous plastic surgeries and life as a virtual recluse earned him many critics and the nickname “Wacko Jacko.” (ANI)

Munnabhai, Nafisa no icons of socialism, says Fernandes

New Delhi, May 27 (ANI): Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt and former national women’s swimming champion Nafisa Ali are, by no stretch of imagination, socialists, and it is a shame that the Samajwadi Party, which is led by Mulayam Singh Yadav, is projecting both as icons of socialism, says veteran politician George Fernandes.

“The biggest shame is to see the likes of socialites or film stars like Nafisa Ali or Sanjay Dutt sporting the red topi of the socialist working class movement like a fashion accessory just because they are campaigning for the Samajwadi Party. It is indeed sad that Mulayam Singh Yadav allows such mockery to take place under his Samajwadi banner,” says Fernandes in an article for the socialist journal “The Other Side”.

Appealing for genuine socialists to get together to promote the politics of integrity and ideology, Fernandes says practicing politicians must take the lead and adds that senior leaders of the socialist movement can inspire through their past legacies and moral character.

“There is hardly any room left for brilliant oratory… and some like Nafisa Ali and Mallika Sarabhai thought their media ilan and glamour could replace the (socialist) system by becoming candidates. The media must stop acting as if they are solely in charge of the political discourse of the country,” he adds.

He concludes with a warning that apathy and arrogance only breeds more of the same rubbish that the current crop of leaders often rail against. (ANI)

Anupam Kher hosts premiere of ‘Saaransh’

Mumbai, May 25 (ANI): Going down memory lane, Bollywood actor Anupam Kher hosted the premiere of his debut film, ‘Saaransh’ in Mumbai, after its completion of 25 years.

Anupam, who stepped into Bollywood with film ‘Saaransh’, hosted its premiere at Metro big cinema theatre where the movie was released 25 years ago.

In 1984, the premiere of ‘Saaransh’ had to be postponed because of riots in Bhiwandi, following which distributors were reluctant to organise one.

So, Anupam planned to host the premiere of his first film even though he earned rave reviews for his performance. He was just 28 when he played the role.

The actor became quite nostalgic during the event.

“The day when this film was released, I was standing outside to know if the audience can recognise me after the movie as I was 28 then and played the role of a 65-year-old man. Everyone passed by without recognising me. I thought of taking revenge and therefore hosted the premiere of this film so that people can now recognise me,” he said.

Anupam re-lived this moment with his co-stars from the film Rohini Hattangadi and Soni Razdan and director Mahesh Bhatt who were present at the premiere along with friends including directors Yash Chopra, Rakesh Mehra and Satish Kaushik.

While speaking on the occasion, Director Satish Kaushik said he remembered very well the condition of Anupam Kher and his feelings 25 years back.

“It is a great opportunity to see this movie again with its actors and co- actors. It has been a great journey,” said Satish.

In ‘Saaransh’, Anupam had played the role of a retired school principal who had lost interest in life after his son’s death abroad and has to fight to get back his son’s ashes. He later fights for his tenant’s rights too, taking on powerful politicians.

The film was also India’s official entry to the Oscars in 1985 in the best foreign language film category.

The actor, who has acted in almost all genres, will soon be seen in Walt Disney’s production ‘Zokommon’ with child artiste Darsheel Safary, ‘Hawai Dada’, ‘Wake up Sid’ and many other untitled projects. (ANI)
