Mizuho to issue up to 6 bln shares in offering-sources

June 25 (Reuters) – Mizuho Financial Group (8411.T) will decide on Friday to sell up to 6 billion new shares in a planned global offering, increasing the total number of shares outstanding by up to 38 percent, four sources with knowledge of the matter said.

Mizuho had registered with regulators last month to raise up to 800 billion yen in a global offering of new shares to prepare for stricter capital requirements, but had not made an official decision to go ahead with the offering. [ID:nTOE64D069]

The bank, Japan’s second largest by assets, will hold a board meeting on Friday to decide on the number of shares to be issued, among other details, according to the sources, who were not authorised to speak about the matter publicly.

Mizuho’s board is expected to agree to issue up to 6 billion shares, which at the current market price of 155 yen would bring in 930 billion yen ($10.4 billion) in fresh capital, much bigger than what it had originally announced in May.

Mizuho will decide on a per-share price at a later date based on how its stock price performs, and plans to complete the offering next month, the sources said.

The bank will make an official announcement later on Friday, the sources said. (Editing by Chris Gallagher)

Deshpande denies keeping IPL in dark about ”individual bid”

New Delhi, Jun 6 (PTI) The twists and turns in the Pune bid row continued today with City Corporation MD Aniruddh Deshpande refuting allegations that he kept the IPL in dark about his “individual bid” for the franchise but conceded that the company”s name was used in his bid documents. Deshpande”s denial comes in the wake of media reports that the Pune-based Real Estate firm City Corporation had authorised him to bid on the company”s behalf in a January board meeting.

The firm, in which Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar”s family has 16 per cent equity, had earlier denied being part of the bid but BCCI President Shashank Manohar yesterday rejected its claim, saying the failed bid came in the company”s name. Deshpande said he had told the IPL that he would float a new company after winning the bid, which was eventually clinched by the Sahara Group.

Deshpande said the City Corporation allowed him to use the company”s name on the documents as very little time was left for the bids to open. “All the documents were in the company”s name and a letter to that effect was also submitted to the IPL Governing Council on March 21 before the bid.

I told them that the stakeholders will change if we are successful bidders,” Deshpande said. “Since we were not successful bidders, nothing further had to be done,” he added.

City Corporation”s involvement had been vehemently denied by Pawar and his Parliamentarian daughter Supriya Sule. The duo had said that the Pawar family was not involved in any bidding process but had admitted that Deshpande was allowed to go ahead in his “individual capacity”.

Deshpande said the company”s Board backed out of bidding for the team after a March 17 meeting where a fresh resolution allowing him to go ahead individually was passed. .

Ministry seeks meeting with IOC president

The Sports Ministry has sought an early meeting with International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge to solve what it described as a “false situation of crisis” created by the Indian Olympic Association and various national sports federations.

In another letter to Rogge, Joint Secretary Injeti Srinivas asked for an immediate meeting to clear the air, adding that the government has not received copy of the IOC letter in which the world body threatened to take up the issue in its Executive Board meeting next nonth. “We are confident that the IOC will acquaint itself with the full facts before forming any view in the present case. We expect that our meeting with you can be scheduled early to enable a comprehensive appreciation of the entire matter,” Srinivas said.

Indirectly targetting IOA secretary general Randhir Singh, also an IOC member, the Ministry accused him of trying to mislead the committee. “It is unfortunate that the IOC member from India has not even cared to consult us before taking up this matter with you,” Srinivas said.

The Ministry also accused the IOA officials of creating this crisis only to protect their interests. “This an attempt to create a false situation of crisis, by a few interested persons, whose only aim is to protect their unduly long tenures in the IOA and the NSFs (National Sports Federations),” Srinivas said.

In the letter, the ministry also cited government sports regulations in countries like the USA and Malaysia to assert that ensuring accountability of NSFs was not a violation of the Olympic charter. It also alleged that being an IOC member and an Olympic Council of Asia General Secretary, Randhir is well aware of the regulations internationally but has kept the IOC in dark about the scenario in India.

“He is fully aware of the proceedings before the Delhi High Court, as IOA is a respondent, in the ongoing Public Interest Litigation. Further, as the Secretary General of OCA, he is conversant with the sports legislations of Malaysia and Sri Lanka,” the letter said. “However, it appears that IOC has not been apprised by him of the national (in this case Indian) perspective in its entirety, thereby exposing his conflict of interest as well, since he has been holding the post of Secretary General, IOA for over two decades,” Srinivas wrote.

The ministry said it has gone through the sports regulations in 30 countries before formulating the guidelines. “We have carefully studied sports regulations prevalent in more than 30 countries, including USA, France, Italy, Hungary, Mauritius, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. These countries have enacted sports legislations, which contain several mandatory provisions that their sports federations have to conform, to obtain recognition and financial support from the government,” the ministry letter added.

The ministry said instead of rejecting the guidelines, the IOA and NSF administrators should focus on preparing for the Commonwealth Games here this October. “The Government is providing full administrative and financial support to the Organising Committee for staging the Games successfully. It is critical that, at this time, all our sports bodies focus on the Games, which is their primary duty.”

Randhir refutes allegations

Meanwhile, Randhir Singh, when contacted, said there was no need for him to consult the government, adding that his visit to the IOC headquarters in Lausanne was to attend a couple of meetings and not to discuss the issue. “I’m rather surprised by the Ministry view that I should have discussed the issue with them. The Ministry did not consult us (IOA) before issuing the guidelines, why should we consult them?” Randhir said.

China stripped of Sydney gymnastics bronze

Dubai, Apr.29 (ANI): China has been stripped of their women”s gymnastics team bronze medal from the Sydney 2000 Olympics after one of the athletes falsified her age, the International Olympic Committee said on Wednesday.

According to a China Daily report, an International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) probe had found in February that Dong Fangxiao was younger than the minimum age requirement of 16 after registering different ages at Sydney and the Beijing Games eight years later.

“The medal and diplomas of Dong Fangxiao are withdrawn and reallocated accordingly,” IOC spokesman Mark Adams told reporters after an IOC Executive Board meeting.

The United States, fourth-place finishers in Sydney, are now upgraded to third place and will be awarded the bronze medal.

The IOC ordered the Chinese Olympic Committee to return the medal and her diplomas so they can be re-awarded and told the committee it must ensure rules regarding age-limits are strictly kept. (ANI)

BJP withdraws support from Soren Government for ”betrayal”

New Delhi, Apr 28 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday withdrew its support for Shibu Soren”s Government in Jharkhand for voting against the National Democratic Alliance (NDA)”s cut motion.

The BJP took a final call on ties with Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren”s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) at its Parliamentary Board meeting held here today.

“We are withdrawing support from the government in Jharkhand. Deputy Chief Minister Raghuvar Das would be reaching Ranchi today and handing over the withdrawal letter to the Governor,” said BJP General Secretary Anant Kumar after the Parliamentary Board meeting.

“All BJP ministers would resign with immediate effect,” he added.

The BJP was reportedly upset with Soren for he voted with the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government on the cut motion.

Senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu had earlier this morning said the party would take a final call on ties with Soren at the meeting.

“How can one ally claim he voted for the UPA by mistake,” said Naidu.

Soren was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand on December 30, 2009 for the third time.

He had formed the government with a five-party coalition.

Soren had secured the support of 44 MLAs in the 81-member House after the assembly elections in Jharkhand gave a fractured verdict.

The JMM had 18 seats, BJP had 18 seats, Janata Dal-United (JD-U) had two seats, All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) had five seats and Jharkhand Janadhikar Manch (JJM) had one seat in the assembly.

The Congress has 18 seats in the assembly. (ANI)

Europa League semi-finalists Hamburg SV have summoned coach Bruno Labbadia to a board meeting later on Monday with German media reporting he has been sacked.

Hamburg, who visit Fulham for the second leg of their Europa tie on Thursday following a 0-0 draw in the first leg, would not confirm Labbadia had departed.

“This cannot be confirmed by us,” a club official told Reuters. Assistant coach Ricardo Moniz took charge of training on Monday.

Hamburg were crushed 5-1 by Hoffenheim on Sunday, dropping to seventh in the Bundesliga after a poor second half of the season in which they have won only four of their 15 league games since the winter break.

No international cricket in Pak for time being: ICC

Dubai, Apr.21 (ANI): The International Cricket Council (ICC) has ruled out the return of international cricket in Pakistan in the near future, saying it would have to continue playing its ‘home’ series at neutral venues for the time being.

The ICC taskforce, which was formed to look into the possibility of holding international matches in Pakistan, has submitted its report in this regard, The News reports.

The report, which was tabled during the recent ICC executive board meeting in Dubai, stated that Pakistan would have to continue playing its matches at neutral venues, as the situation in the country is not conducive to host international tournaments.

ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat has already said that the apex cricket body is trying hard to ensure that Pakistan gets international exposure, especially after the refusal of foreign teams to tour the country due the precarious security conditions, but it will have to wait before situation normalises in the troubled country.

“ Pakistan should be patient in these testing times as there’s a lack of confidence in foreign teams. The ICC is very keen to ensure Pakistan play at neutral venues rather than not competing at the international level, which I think will be detrimental for Pakistan cricket,” Lorgat had said while unveiling the 2010 T20 World Cup trophy in Karachi last week. Thompson cleared of misconduct claims

Former Australian head swim coach Alan Thompson has been cleared of inappropriate behaviour following a four-month investigation into his alleged misconduct at a coaching conference on the Gold Coast in 2007.

Thompson stepped down from his role last December after anonymous allegations were made regarding his conduct at the conference.

But Swimming Australia said on Wednesday that a lengthy investigation by Louise Donohoe, SC, had found no evidence to support the allegations made against Thompson.

Thompson accepted a redundancy package from SA in January this year following a restructure that included splitting up his roles as head coach and high performance general manager.

Leigh Nugent has since been appointed head coach of the Australian swim team.

Swimming Australia issued a statement stating the final findings of Donohoe’s investigation had been presented to the Swimming Australia board on Monday and an out of session board meeting was held on Tuesday night to discuss the findings

Delay in IMF funds approval to further hit Pakistan’s flagging economy

Islamabad, Mar.27 (ANI): The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has postponed its
executive board meeting scheduled to be held on March 31 to review Pakistan’s economy and approve funds worth 1.2 billion dollars.

According to a senior official of the finance department, the IMF has deferred the important meeting because of the Pakistan government’s failure to meet an important condition of the tabling of the draft Value Added Tax (VAT) legislation in the four provincial assemblies.

The IMF website, where meeting schedules are posted, also has removed Pakistan from the board agenda, The News reports.

The official said that the government is now likely to send a complete compliance report to the IMF next Monday once the VAT draft law is submitted before all the four provincial assemblies.

Islamabad has so far received about 6.4 billion dollars from the IMF from its total package, which was offered to rescue the country’s sluggish economy.

Financial experts said that the delay on part of the IMF in releasing the funds would put enormous pressure on the country’s economy, and is also likely to affect the Karachi Stock Exchange.

They said that it is unlikely that the IMF would approve the remaining funds promised under the 11.3 billion dollar standby agreement by March 31, and that it could be delayed till June-July next year. (ANI)

New Zealand Cricket deny Howard snub over ICC vice-president role

Melbourne, Mar 24 (ANI): New Zealand cricket chief Justin Vaughan has said that there are plans to invite former Australian premier John Howard as a special guest at the NZC meeting in May, and refuted reports about snubbing the ICC vice-president nominee.

The Dominion Post report claimed on Tuesday that New Zealand Cricket rejected an approach last month from Cricket Australia chief James Sutherland for Howard to meet Kiwi cricket executives during the first Test in Wellington, which ended yesterday.

Vaughan replied that Howard’s visit would be pointless in an official capacity because the NZC board could not be convened to meet him.

It is understood the request was aimed at easing tensions between Australian and Kiwi cricket powerbrokers after respected New Zealand official Sir John Anderson lost the presidency vote to Howard.

Vaughan denied that the NZC had snubbed Howard. He said plans were afoot to invite the former politician to the organisation’s next board meeting in May to help iron out any differences.

“Some people have jumped to conclusions. It”s a long bow to suggest we have snubbed John Howard,” The Daily Telegraph quoted Vaughan, as saying.

“We have a good relationship with Cricket Australia. John Howard has a bit of learning to do to get up to speed [with cricket administration] and hopefully we can help him in that regard,” he added.

Former Kiwi Test bowler Simon Doull captured the sentiment of many New Zealanders when he said Anderson was a superior choice to Howard.

“In my eyes, Sir John has far more cricket knowledge and background, whereas John Howard has more of a political background,” he said. (ANI)

Handique inaugurates Central Geological Programming Board meeting

New Delhi, Sep 11(ANI): Union Mines Minister B. K. Handique on Friday inaugurated the 45th Meeting of the Central Geological Programming Board (CGPB) and exhibition in the national capital.

The exhibition depicts countrywide activities of Geological Survey of India (GSI), its publications, maps, portals and societal contribution.

While delivering the inaugural speech on the occasion, Handique said that the GSI is one of the oldest scientific surveys of the world and has a glorious past and hoped that it would preserve its identity in the national and international arena.

Handique also said that to keep it relevant to the changes in the modern society, it is necessary that the GSI equips itself to deliver the needs of the country.

He said that to help sustain the GSI the Government has constituted a committee to make appropriate recommendations.

Handique further said that new technology both for exploration and mining have to be introduced.

“I understand that hyperspectral remote sensing is one of the latest tools to be used to demarcate areas of mineralization on the ground based on identical alteration characteristics,” Handique said.

“GSI has entered into collaboration with the Indian Space Agency to initiate ground checking of certain mineral belts through hyperspectral data available with ISRO,” he added. (ANI)

Satyam may 2009 lay off 5,000

Board meeting of Satyam Computer to discuss business strategies, is expected to take place on June 11 after the new owner, Tech Mahindra, assumed charge and one of the main agenda’s would be the company’s workforce. There are indications that the company might agree to lay off about 5,000 staffers in phases.

The meeting, scheduled to be held on next Thursday or Friday for the first time in the presence of it’s new board — six government-nominated members and four member from Tech Mahindra, is expected to discuss the company’s business strategies.

Vineet Nayar, the Tech Mahindra CEO, had said recently that Satyam has about 10,000 surplus staff and that the company would come up with the ‘least painful’ ways to handle this situation. Given the sensitivities of the situation, it is highly assumed that the board is likely to draw a consensus on the ‘lay offs’ which might be shaped up in forming about 5,000-10,000 people as the reserve/bench strength.

Advani agrees to continue as Leader of Opposition

New Delhi, May 18 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party President Rajnath Singh on Monday announced that Lal Krishna Advani has agreed to continue as Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

“The party needs Advaniji’s guidance following the setback in the general elections. Advaniji has agreed to continue as the party leader in Parliament,” Singh told reporters after the BJP’s parliamentary board meeting here.

Taking responsibility for the NDA’s poor performance in general elections, Advani had offered to resign as Leader of the Opposition on Saturday.

However, party general secretary Arun Jaitley told reporters that members of the board had then tried to persuade him not to insist on doing so, but he remained firm.

The board then asked party president Rajnath Singh to talk to him privately to make him change his mind. (ANI)

Some BJP leaders celebrate their victory in polls

Bangalore, Shimla/ Bhopal, May 16 (ANI): Some Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders on Saturday celebrated their success after defeating Congress candidates in their respective constituencies.

In Bangalore, BJP leader Anant Kumar offered his supporters and party workers sweets.

“The all India results are not upto expectations. Today, we are having our parliamentary board meeting under the leadership of L. K. Advani. We are going to discuss about the results there,” Kumar said.

BJP leader and Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, said he was proud of the voters of his state, who had supported the saffron party.

“The wind, which was blowing in support of the Congress towards Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir, changed its direction in support of the BJP. For this I thank all the voters of Himachal,” Dhumal said.

Meanwhile, senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj expressed dismay over the BJP losing a large number of seats to the Congress.

“The results that have arrived are only of the BJP and not of the alliance. Our NDA alliance has increased so there has been no mistake in forming the alliance. If we compare the results, then BJP has got less number of votes than Congress. So why should we blame the alliance,” Swaraj said. (ANI)

BJP has accepted the people’s verdict: Jaitley

New Delhi, May 16 (ANI): Accepting the people’s mandate on the 2009 General Elections, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) General Secretary Arun Jaitley on Saturday said that his party had got less seats than expected.

“Things definitely went wrong for us. The BJP accepts the people’s verdict. We have got less seats than we expected,” Jaitley said at a press conference here.

Jaitley admitted that the Congress has emerged as the largest political party and was the nearest to form the next government at the Centre.

“The BJP respects the decision of the electorate and will analyse the reasons behind the loss,” he added.

Jaitley admitted that something went against the interests of the BJP, and added that a few things worked in favour of the Congress.

“We will analyse the reasons behind what happened after the final results come. The BJP will have a parliamentary board meeting at 5 PM today to discuss the future course of action,” he added.

Jaitley further said his party had performed well in some states along with allies, but in some states, the performance was average to poor in some areas.

He also said that the Congress- led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) had the biggest mandate.

“The Congress has the biggest mandate. I think if the Congress wants to compliment some of its leaders in this hour of victory, I think they are entitled to do so,” Jaitley added.

Jaitley said that in some states the number of seats dipped whereas they had been expected it to rise. (ANI)

PCB’s no vote helped ICC to move World Cup out of Pak

Dubai, May 15 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board’s decision to stay away from voting helped the International Cricket Council to move World Cup matches out of Pakistan.

According to the legal advice received by the ICC, when PCB chairman Ijaz Butt chose to stay away from the voting during the ICC board meeting that decided on the issue in Dubai on April 17, his vote was counted as an unanimous one.

“The final vote during that meeting has been recorded as having been a unanimous one,” ICC sources told Cricinfo.

Sources said the PCB decision to abstain from voting has left it on weak legal ground in the case

“This should work strongly in the ICC’s favour. If the PCB had any objection at that point of time, they should have voted against the move instead of abstaining. Legally, as it is, they have a weak case,” they said.

The PCB announced that it had issued a legal notice to the ICC on May 9, three weeks after the ICC arrived at its decision.

Terming the ICC decision as ‘discriminatory and legally flawed’, the PCB wrote to the world body asking for the case to be referred to the independent Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Although the ICC has largely remained muted on the issue, its CEO vowed to deal with the situation.

“On the PCB issue, I believe it’s better for me to say less on it. It is the subject of a dispute and we’ll have to deal with it,” ICC CEO Haroon Lorgat said.

The ICC official had also rejected PCB’s suggestions to hold the World Cup matches, originally scheduled in Pakistan, on neutral venues like Dubai and Abu Dhabi. (ANI)
