Another honour killing in Punjab

Amritsar (Punjab), Mar 31 (ANI): In yet another case of honour killing, a couple was shot dead in Punjab on the orders of the girl””s father for marrying against his wishes.

It has been reported that the victims Prabhjot Kaur and Pradeep Singh from Ferozepur, both students of Class 12 were shot dead by five unidentified gunmen, when they arrived at a local school in Amritsar for their board examinations.

The killers fled the spot after the murder and snatched the carbine of a security guard accompanying the couple. The victims were provided police protection on the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court after their marriage.

There are reports that as many as 15 bullets were fired at the couple, who died on the spot.

“This incident should not have happened. But the boy””s behaviour was not correct. He had left his first wife and also has a child. He married his wife””s niece. It is a case of personal enmity,” said Sukhdev Singh Brar, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Firozepur.

“A number of cases were registered against him. The girl is from the same family. We will round up those involved soon,” added Brar.

It has been reported that the government is now contemplating to include the crime in the IPC (Indian Penal Code).

The government had earlier said that a proposal to amend the Indian Penal Code to deal with honour killings is under consideration. However, it was not clear by when will the amendment come into practice.

In a landmark judgement, the Karnal sessions court on Tuesday awarded death sentence to the five accused and life-term to the leader of the Khap Panchayat for murder of a newly married couple. (ANI)

BJP blames UPA Govt. of sidelining States on education

New Delhi, June 26 (ANI): The UPA Government’s plans to bring educational reforms drew flak from Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday which charged the Government of not taking States into confidence in the matter despite education falling in the concurrent list.enior BJP leader and former Union Human Resource Minister in the National Democratic Alliance Government, Murli Manohar Joshi, blamed the new HRD minister Kapil Sibal for not consulting the State Governments on the subject matter.

“The HRD Minister is well-versed with law. He should know that there is a way to bring amendments in the education system, that has been blatantly defied,” said Murli Manohar Joshi saihere.

Sibal recently stated that foreign educational academies and institutions would be allowed to function in India on a wider scale.

Proposing sweeping reforms in the sector, Sibal said that the class X board examinations would be done away with unless the student opts for higher studies.

He also proposed to revamp the system of granting marks in the examinations by changing it to grading instead of giving marks to the students.

Earlier on Wednesday (June 24) Sibal had said that it would be his endeavour to implement the recommendations of the Committee on Renovation and Rejuvenation of Higher Education chaired by Prof. Yashpal within 100 days of the new government in the office. (ANI)

A victim of Jaipur blast prepares for board examinations

Jaipur, Mar 16 (ANI): After having endured ten surgeries and with 30 ball bearings inside his torso, Rahul Sharma, a victim of the serial blasts in Jaipur, is determined to appear in his higher secondary board examinations, slated to commence on March 23.

Rahul who belongs to a lower middle class family said that the doctor had advised to undergo another operation to get rid of the odd splinters and around 30 ball bearings lodged in his stomach.

However, he contended that the priority was the examination lest he miss an academic year and has resolved to let the surgery wait till the examinations are over.

“Doctor has asked me to undergo operation right now to remove the ball bearings still inside my stomach. But I told them that I will get it done during the summer vacations after my tenth standard examinations,” said Rahul.is father Satyanarayan Sharma wished that the Government would take a note of this case and appreciating Rahul’s perseverance, facilitate Rahul’s higher education.

“I hope the Government would make some arrangement for my employment and also for the studies of my child. The Government should provide for Rahul’s aspirations for higher studies,” said Satyanarayan.
