Climate Corps 2010: Making the Bloomberg Experience More Efficient

On my first day as an EDF Climate Corps fellow, I walked into the Bloomberg L.P. offices in New York City and was completely blown away by the remarkable lighting displays throughout the building.

A quick tour revealed that the building has three primary functions:

• Office space
• Data centers
• Broadcast studios

I immediately realized that the bright, colorful lighting in the building was primarily installed for its artistic value and not for its functionality. I understood that my goal for the summer was to find ways of increasing energy efficiency for Bloomberg, and removing this type of lighting would be an easy way to do just that.

But it wasn’t that easy. By recommending that the lighting be replaced, I would be taking away from the building’s aesthetics, a unique part of the company’s culture. I knew that I needed to dig around for other options that wouldn’t compromise the building’s multiple purposes — not even the artistic ones.

Bloomberg has already reduced its energy consumption by 11 percent in three years, while simultaneously adding space and employees. I figured that if Bloomberg could benefit the environment while expanding its business, I could certainly get creative with my dilemma.

After the tour, I went back to my desk determined to develop a plan for tackling this complex situation. I came up with three rules to help structure my approach, and I have used them to formulate recommendations.

1. Look for Changes that Affect the Entire Building

I started by looking into what major components were used in all three types of space. I realized that focusing on mechanisms, such as ducts and HVAC systems, would yield substantial improvements and prove cost effective. These components have a large scale effect on overall energy efficiency because of their presence throughout the entire building. Cross-building projects seem complex at first, but are manageable and lead to substantial improvements in energy efficiency.

2. Separate by Primary Use

My next step was to look at the different parts of the building. I started with the office space, concentrating on the lighting. By breaking the building apart and focusing on manageable situations, it was easier to find meaningful efficiency gains. The key was focusing on specific projects that could be accomplished, instead of getting bogged down by the differences between the spaces.

3. Work Within the Culture

When determining projects, it is important to look through the lens of Bloomberg’s vibrant and energetic culture. The building’s interior aesthetics and design are an important part of what makes the Bloomberg experience so enchanting. In an attempt to keep that experience in tact, I decided to install lower watt lamps and ballasts that use less energy and do not affect the building’s aesthetic charm.

Following these three steps for identifying energy efficiency improvements in a multi-purpose building with a unique culture has allowed me to formulate a structured plan, focusing on high priority initiatives that will lead to meaningful improvements.

Cyclonic storm causes havoc in many parts of Manipur

Imphal, April 19 (ANI): Over 100 houses in different parts of Manipur state were damaged following a cyclonic storm and heavy winds during the wee hours of Sunday.

The storm swept across the State and left a trail of destruction in many areas.

The gale, accompanied by hailstones, caused widespread damage in different parts of Bishnupur and Imphal West districts, however, there were no reports of human casualties.

“Yesterday, when all people were asleep at around 1.45 or 2.00 am, there were violent storms that occurred twice. The first one was a strong one and continued for a longer period. However, the second storm was stronger than the first one and continued for a short period,” said Chaoba Nameirakpam, a villager.

Some of the houses were totally razed while tin roofs of many houses were blown away. The storm also uprooted many trees and electric poles, and led to snapping of wires.

More than 50 houses were damaged in Oinam Assembly constituency of Bishnupur district.

The gale left a similar trail of destruction at Chajing Karam in Imphal West district as well.

Apart from the houses, the storm also razed down a school.

Local residents here are faced with a lot of inconvenience, as fallen electric poles are still lying across roads. (ANI)

Argentina trumps Hockeyroos again

Argentina has held off a late comeback from the Hockeyroos to take out game two of their four-match series 2-1 at the Townsville Hockey Centre.

The Hockeyroos were blown away with an early double from Maria Noel Barrionuevo and came good too late in the game, failing to get the equaliser.

Argentina was quick to build on its game-one form with a penalty corner giving Barrionuevo the chance to slam the ball into the back of the goal in the seventh minute to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

Not giving the Hockeyroos time to recover, Barrionuevo scored her second goal in as many minutes for a 2-0 buffer.

The Hockeyroos had their first real chance of the game in the 52nd minute with Casey Eastham getting a shot away that was marginally wide of the goal.

They finally broke through the tight Argentinean defence in the 63rd minute, with Nicole Arrold smashing the ball into the back of the goal from a penalty, but the leveller never came.

Hockeyroos coach Frank Murray believed his team gave away two soft goals and could not recover despite a second-half resurgence.

“I actually thought in the second half we got on top and dominated and made a lot of opportunities but again not converting, so [I'm] happy enough with the second half but it is disappointing to give them two soft goals,” he said.

Murray suggested there were too many players worried about staying in the team and not concentrating on the task at hand.

“Again I think we’ve just got a few people who are tentative,” he said.

“They know they are playing for spots and are second-guessing themselves. They’ve just got to go with their first decision, execute it and then live with the result of that.

Murray admitted the two single-goal losses against Argentina was not what he was after with the World Cup qualifiers starting next month.

“There’s not much between these two teams and to lose both games is not an acceptable result by any means,” he said.

“We obviously need to click by the time we get to Chile which is about three weeks time, but I think we will see a better performance in the third and fourth Tests.”

Here’s your chance to win ‘The Beatles’ first contract

London, July 2 (ANI): If you are a die-hard Beatles fan, here’s a chance for you to win the first contract signed by the Fab Four-all you have to do is to guess the estimated price of the document today. n the newly launched competition, contestants have to pay 10 pounds to guess the value of the contract.

And the winner would get to take the highly prized document home, reports the Telegraph.

The fab four’s prospective manager, Brian Epstein, offered to sign the band after he was blown away watching them perform in Liverpool’s Cavern Club.

John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr signed the contract in 1962.

The contract bears a mistake where Lennon wrote his name in the wrong part, and it was also signed by some band members’ parents, due to their young ages.

However, the agreement has only changed hands a couple of times over the decades and was acquired for The Imagine Corporation at Christie’s auction house.

Currently insured for 500,000 pounds, the documents is regarded as an irreplaceable piece of musical heritage.

Competition entrants will have to pay 10 pounds for the chance to estimate the contract’s value, as estimated by a panel of experts, if it had been put up for auction in April 2008 at a London auction house.

The winner, who will be announced in around six weeks time, has to match the panel’s estimated value.

One can enter the competition by visiting imagine.uk.com. (ANI)

Largest herd of gazelles sighted in Mongolia

London, May 13 (ANI): A mega-herd of a quarter of a million Mongolian gazelles has been seen gathering on the country’s steppes, which is estimated to be the largest herd of gazelles ever recorded.

According to a report by BBC News, the biologists who saw it estimate it contained perhaps a quarter of all Mongolian gazelles on the planet.

“It was stunning,” said Kirk Olson of the University of Massachusetts, US. “I don’t know if I was surprised or simply blown away by what we came across,” he added.

Olson and colleagues based in the US and Mongolia have published details of the epic gathering in the journal Oryx.

“I expected we would come across gazelles at times in large and impressive numbers. But, not a couple of hundred thousand in one sweep across the horizon,” said Olson.

In September 2007, Olson’s team was driving across the eastern Mongolian steppes studying the habitat of the Mongolian gazelle, one of the last nomadic ungulates to survive in large numbers.

Together with scientists at the Smithsonian Institute, they had been capturing gazelles and fitting them with GPS collars to track their movements, trying to work out where they travel and why.

As they drove east, they began to encounter herds of a couple of thousand individuals.

“Groups of this size are impressive and beautiful to see,” described Olson.

Then, the following day, at about midday, they drove to a hillside offering a great view of what appeared to be one such herd.

“But it was really one edge of a group that ended up being over 250,000 by one estimate. We were simply amazed at the sight. The image I have in my mind of seeing this massive aggregation of gazelles will always be etched into my memory,” said Olson.

Mongolian gazelles are known to gather in large herds. Groups containing 10,000 animals or more are often reported, while the largest herd previously known numbered 80,000.

“I expected that we would come across gazelles at times in large and impressive numbers,” said Olson. “But not a couple hundred thousand in one sweep across the horizon. I had never seen that many before and that many had never been documented,” he added.

Olson believes the gathering was a natural event triggered by a set of rare and extreme circumstances. (ANI)

Champions League: Chelsea’s Drogba warns Barcelona that it will be blown away

London, May 6 (ANI): Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has warned Barcelona that they will be blown away in the Champions League semi-final.

The Chelsea striker taunted the Catalan giants by insisting the Blues have more match winners in their team.

With so much hype around Barca’s ‘holy trinity’ of Leo Messi, Samuel Eto’o and Thierry Henry, the Ivory Coast striker hit back with a volley of his own.

Drogba, 31, said: “I think, in the last few months, we’ve shown that we can score goals and, OK, they have Messi, Henry, Eto’o, and Andres Iniesta but we can also score.

“We’ve got more players able to score. Our midfielders, our defenders can also score. We can score from every position in our side. We know that. We know that and we have to score goals to win the tie,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.n the knockout stages alone, Chelsea has found goals from four different players in three areas of the team.

Drogba is more determined than ever to make any chance count.

“It would be great for Chelsea if I’d managed to score that goal, but Valdes made two fantastic saves. Yes, I was a bit frustrated. In these kind of games, if you manage to score it makes a big difference. As a striker, you know that. If you miss a chance one game, another might come along in the next.

That is what you hope. I hope to have similar chances on Wednesday to make a difference,” he said. (ANI)

Wine changes its taste with lunar cycle

London, Apr 19 (ANI): Fancy some wine today? Well, the fruition of your desire will end in disappointment – not because of bad selection or the bottle being corked but due to a cosmic force: the moon.

A growing number of experts reckon that today is the worst possible day for a glass of the old vino.

According to scientists, wine changes its taste with the lunar cycle. And most of yesterday and today is a Root period, when the moon casts an unpleasant flavour.

It has emerged that Tesco and Marks and Spencer only invite critics to taste their ranges when the moon-related biodynamic calendar dictates that wines will be at their best.

Both firms pay strict attention to a moon calendar published for nearly half a century by a German great-grandmother called Maria Thun. She has divided the days of the year into ‘fruit’, ‘flower’, ‘leaf’ and ‘root’ – the first two are best for drinking wine, the second two worst.

Pierpaolo Petrassi, Tesco’s senior product development manager, admitted his firm held its tastings in line with the calendar.

“Our first choice is a fruit day. We seek to avoid root and leaf days. It may be a little step beyond what consumers can comprehend. We have so many other things to educate consumers about,” The Scotsman quoted Petrassi, as saying.

M and S winemaker Jo Ahearne is another convert.

“Before the tasting, I was really unconvinced, but the difference between the days was so obvious I was blown away,” he said.

David Motion, a London wine merchant, said: “I live in the city and don’t think much about nature, but it is clear it has an influence.” (ANI)

Donna Feldman says Israeli women can give Brazilian models a run for their money

Washington, Apr 18 (ANI): Model Donna Feldman, who is known for her exotic looks, insists that although Brazilian models have always reigned the swimsuit modeling industry, Israeli women can give them a run for their money.

Donna strongly believes that Israeli women are much more exotic looking, and can take the modeling industry by storm.

“Every time I visit my family in Israel I am blown away by how beautiful the women are. The beach in Tel Aviv is filled with tan, curvy, all-natural exotic women,” Fox News quoted her as saying.

“Instead of a single man vacationing on the beach in Brazil, Israel is definitely another option to consider,” she added.

Meanwhile, Donna has posed for the calender ‘Ladies of 69′ alongside Bar Rafaeli and Natalie Portman. (ANI)

Rachel McAdams sees a potential politician in Ben Affleck

Washington, Apr 15 (ANI): Hollywood actress Rachel McAdams has revealed that she sees a potential politician in Ben Affleck, and insists that he can prove to be a “real asset” to the country.

Rachel was blown away by her co-actor’s portrayal of a congressman in her flick State of Play.

She has even agreed to campaign for him, if he chooses to contest elections.

“I hope he does go into politics,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

“I think he would be great. And I think he’d be a real asset to the country. I cannot (vote) – no Canadians. (But) I would vote for Ben (if I could). I would wear a big ‘Vote for Ben’ sticker,” she added. (ANI)

Wind, rain go away, come back after campaign day

New Delhi, April 6 (IANS) An unexpected change in the weather in Jammu and Kashmir has spelt doom for political parties that suddenly find their campaign plans being blown away.

Wind, storm and rain have forced leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress to shift their venues from open grounds to covered halls in Rajouri, Jammu and Billawar.

Congress leaders are particularly worried as they are preparing for a rally to be addressed by party general secretary Rahul Gandhi in Vijapur, a town 29 km southwest of Jammu, Wednesday.

They want to make a big splash with his campaign.

‘But the sudden change in weather has caused us great anxiety,’ admitted a senior leader. ‘We only hope that the weather is calm on Wednesday.’

Leaders of the two rival parties are looking heavenwards for some respite.

Ponting confident about team bouncing back in third ODI

Sydney, Apr 7 (ANI): Australian Skipper Ricky Ponting has backed his openers Brad Haddin and Michael Clarke to bounce back and has publicly challenged himself to lift his game after being thrashed by South Africa in the second game of their one-day international series.

Australia were blown away by pace duo Wayne Parnell (4-25) and Dale Steyn (4-27) at Centurion as South Africa bowled the tourists out for 131 and scored 3-132 in 26.2 overs in reply.

“We don’t need wholesale changes. We need to get those guys to play a little bit better,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Ponting, as saying.

“I’m in exactly the same boat. It’s a while since I’ve made a hundred in one-day cricket (14 months) so I’ve got to really knuckle down and get stuck in as well and make a big score. Batting in the top order in one-day cricket is all about making big scores and taking the responsibility upon yourself to do that,” he said.

“Michael Clarke’s had success there, Brad Haddin has been very good and I’ve been in the No.3 position for a long time. We need to get a lot more consistency out of us for the remainder of this series,” he said.

“We’ve got a few days to try to turn things around. I’m sure that you’ll see a better team on Thursday. That was as bad as we’ve played in a long time,” Ponting added.

Australian team arrived in Cape Town in a confident mood and will resume net practice on Tuesday. (ANI)

Posh Spice lands princess role in Spongebob Squarepants

London, Apr 4 (AN): After Scarlett Johansson and Johnny Depp, Victoria Beckham is making a cameo appearance on TV cartoon Spongebob Squarepants.

The 34-year-old former Spice Girl has landed a guest role as a princess on the hit Nickelodeon cartoon.

Posh recorded the voice-over late last year and, according to the sources, studio bosses are quiet impressed.

“Victoria was a complete pro and finished all her takes in a day,” the Mirror quoted a source as saying.

“She isn’t interested in becoming an actress, but voice-over work is something that appealed. She joked that she could simply rock up to the studios in a trackie and no make-up and no one would ever know.

“Scriptwriters created the role of a posh British princess especially for her and were blown away by what a natural she was.

“Victoria enjoyed every minute and is keen to do more. Network bosses have been in touch since, offering more work – she really does have her pick of projects,” the source added.

She was persuaded to take the part by youngest son Cruz, four – who is a huge fan of Spongebob.

Posh’s episode is likely to air during an hour-long special this summer. (ANI)

Miley Cyrus is the new Judy Garland, says Hanna Montana movie director

Washington, Apr 2 (ANI): Director Peter Chelsom hails teen sensation Miley Cyrus as the new Judy Garland.

Chelsom, who directed Hannah Montana: The Movie, has compared the 16-year-old star’s acting talent with screen legend Garland, insisting he was “blown away” the first time he saw the teen superstar.

In an interview to E! Online, he admits he saw Cyrus’s potential long before they worked together – recalling an appearance on Oprah Winfrey’s talkshow, which left him speechless.

“I was blown away. I just thought, you know there is no way this girl shouldn’t be ranked with Shirley Temple or Judy Garland,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

“I couldn’t believe it. It was like watching an evening with Barbra Streisand,” he added.

The filmmaker is adamant that Cyrus deserves to have her talent recognised – because she has reached such a high standard at such a young age.

“She was 15 for the whole making of the movie…Was Barbra doing that at 15? I don’t think so,” he said. (ANI)

Beckham wants to play until he turns 50

London, Mar 27 (ANI): Ace English midfielder David Beckham has blown away all talk of international retirement by declaring that he wants to play until he turns 50.

Former England skipper Beckham is expected to win his 109th cap in the friendly against Slovakia at Wembley, breaking Bobby Moore’s record for an outfield player.

“I’d love to go to the World Cup and be involved in every squad that gets picked up to that time. I don’t think I’d ever retire.”

Beckham, chasing goalkeeper Peter Shilton’s 125-cap record, has been rejuvenated since his loan move to AC Milan from US outfit LA Galaxy.

The Sun quoted him as saying even if England wins the World Cup next year; he would not call it a day.

“Even if I’m not picked in a particular squad, I always want to be available while I’m still playing,” Beckham said.

When it was put to Beckham that he could not play on until he was 50, he said: “You never know. I don’t want people wondering why I’m still playing. But I’d like that option to still be be involved in a squad one day and, if that happens when I’m 45, I’d take it.”

“I’m passionate about playing for my country. I’ve still got that work-rate there, I’ve shown that with Milan and have played in every game so far,” he added. (ANI)

Geological evidence sheds new light on ancient climate of Mars

Paris, March 20 (ANI): Mars Express has uncovered geological evidence suggesting that some depositional process, revealed by erosion, has been at work on large scales in the equatorial regions of the Red Planet, which would shed new light on the past climate of Mars.

The evidence comes from the mineralogical composition of the Aram Chaos region, a crater 280 km in diameter lying almost directly on the Martian equator.

Data from Mars Express’ OMEGA instrument, the Visible and Infrared Mineralogical Mapping Spectrometer, has revealed that this region shows a significant amount of sulphates and ferric oxides.

Observations from Mars Express show that the bright red dust covering much of the planet is enriched in ferric oxides.

Yet, in the dark deposits of Aram Chaos, there is a four-fold increase in the spectral signature of ferric oxides, revealing a specific concentration mechanism.

Ferric oxides are generally found with sulphates but, in this case, the lighter sulphates have been blown away, leaving the ferric oxides exposed.

“They have accumulated in dark deposits at the bottom of sulphate cliffs,” said Stephane Le Mouelic, Universite de Nantes, a member of the team who performed the investigation.

This suggests that the ferric oxides have been uncovered by erosion before dropping to the base of the cliffs.

The dunes in this region are also enriched in ferric oxides.

Perhaps significantly, this phenomenon is not unique to the Aram Chaos region. The NASA Opportunity rover discovered ferric oxide deposits in Meridiani Planum, about 1000 km away. The scientists called the deposits ‘blueberries’, because of their spherical shape.

Valles Marineris, 3000 km away, also shows similar deposits.

So, Mars Express’ detection of ferric oxides in Aram Chaos links together widely separated areas of Mars.

There may even be other regions that have witnessed the same accumulation process, but now lie hidden from Mars Express’ view.

Although the true extent and nature of the accumulation process of sulphates and ferric oxides remains elusive, the team are now investigating possible hypotheses that could have caused it in the first place.

It could be anything from atmospheric precipitation such as rain or snow, to volcanic ashes or glacial deposits. (ANI)

Message in bottle thrown into ocean found after 25 years

Melbourne, Mar 9 (ANI): An 8-year-old Kiwi boy found a message in a bottle, which was washed up on the beach, 25 years after a girl threw it into the ocean from the same spot.

Tom Hussona, from Auckland, discovered the message on Christmas Day last year.

Kylie Tatham-Tahere, who threw the bottle in the ocean 25 years ago, said she was “blown away” when she got a text message from Tom’s mother Erica.

“The message was just in hundreds of bits,” News.com.au quoted Erica as telling the Waikato Times.

“The paper was so delicate…we had to try to get between the folds and unravel it with toothpicks,” she added.

They managed to read Ms Tatham-Tahere’s name and tracked her down through the Old Friends website. (ANI)

35000 people apply for ‘Best Job in the World’ Down Under

Melbourne, Feb 23 (ANI): Tourism Queensland has received a total of 35000 applications for the ‘Best Job in the World’.

In a last minute flurry nearly 7500 applications were uploaded at the weekend.

Looking at the huge response, tourism officials have now added extra staff to help process the staggering 34,684 island caretaker applications.

Tourism Minister Desley Boyle said that she was blown away by the interest in the Great Barrier Reef’s caretaker role.

“Initially, we said we would look at closing applications off at 30,000 from a logistical point of view, not really envisaging we would actually reach that number,” News.com.au quoted Boyle as saying.

“We had been advising people for a couple of weeks not to leave their submission until the last minute.

“This massive amount of traffic slowed the site down and, regretfully, some people weren’t able to get their video application in by the deadline,” she added.

People from nearly 200 countries have applied for the job, with the highest number from the US (11,565), followed by Canada (2791), Great Britain (2262) and Australia (2064).

The six-month stint will require the successful applicant to explore neighbouring islands, swim, snorkel, discover wildlife, and the locals. (ANI)
