Woods former coach Butch Harmon snubs his offer

London, May 19 (ANI): Tiger Woods has received another major blow, with his ex-coach Butch Harmon, turning down the offer to work with him again.

“The world No 1 asked his agent Mark Steinberg to sound out Harmon about a reunion after Hank Haney quit last week. But Harmon, who now coaches Phil Mickelson and a host of other top stars – including Open champ Stewart Cink – rejected the offer,” reports The Sun.

Harmon preferred to stick with Mickelson, who needs one more win to topple his rival from the top spot after his third Masters triumph in April.

Harmon coached woods from 1993 to 2004.

Tiger Woods former swing coach, Hank Haney, has said that he is relieved to have parted ways with the world No 1 after six years of working together.

“I am better off out of it. That”s the bottom line. It”s a huge weight off my shoulders,” said Haney.

“I wish he had stood up in a Press conference and announced, at the very least, he was sick of all the criticism of me, that he backed me and that he believed in me. But he never did,” he added. (ANI)

Pakistan has helped break anti-China Islamic group

Beijing, May 8 (ANI): Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said that a leader of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), which China accuses of orchestrating attacks in its restive Xinjiang region, has been killed which has subsequently served a severe blow to the group.

Interacting with reporters on the last day of his two-day China visit, Malik said Pakistan together with Beijing has been able to break ETIM’s back and has eliminated its top leaders.

“I am happy to inform you that their back is broken, it’s weakened. We treat ETIM not only as an enemy of China but also as an enemy of Pakistan … Now the other so-called gang leader Haq has been killed recently, I can confirm that,” Malik said while referring to Abdul Haq, an ETIM leader, who is also known as Memetiming Memeti.

“We have witnessed that the ETIM terrorists are weakened and they are no more that kind of organisation,” Malik added.

Beijing maintains that Haq had taken over the ETIM’s leadership after the death of its Pakistani commander Hasan Mashum in 2003.

However, the World Uyghur Congress has denied any knowledge about any such ETIM leader being killed.

“We have also heard this but we don”t have any further information and so cannot elaborate. We don”t know this person so we have no way to verify,” The Dawn quoted

Dilxat Raxit, a spokesman for the World Uyghur Congress, as saying.

In July last year, about 200 people were killed in Xinjiang’s ethnically divided Urumqi city in violent clashes between Han Chinese workers and Uighur workers. (ANI)

Eyjafjallajoekull spurting ash again, flights suspended in Ireland

Washington, May 8 (ANI):Iceland’s Eyjafjallajoekull volcano has once again started emitting ash, with the latest eruptions casting a 1,600 km-wide ash cloud over the Atlantic.

Previous eruptions from Eyjafjallajoekull brought Europe’s aviation industry to a grinding halt due to fears about visibility and the possibility of the ash entering the engines of airplanes. This had left several thousand travellers stranded.

Authorities are closely monitoring the position and height of the ash cloud as well as the direction of prevailing Atlantic winds, which pose a problem when they blow south towards Ireland, located 1500 km southeast of the volcano.

The renewed volcanic activity has already led to some flights being cancelled to and from Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland. (ANI)

Pak’s ambivalence in cracking down on Saeed clear : NYT

New York, Sep.19 (ANI) : Pakistani authorities may have filed cases against Lashkar -e-Taiba (LeT) chief Hafeez Mohammad Saeed, the alleged mastermind of the November 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, but Islamabad’s actions are being considered as a mere ‘hogwash’.

The New York Times, while reporting the actions taken against Saeed, said the ambivalence of Pakistani authorities in cracking down on the LeT’s fouder leader was clear.

The newspaper highlighted that the Pakistan government has never been serious regarding putting a check on Saeed and his covert terror activities being run under the LeT’s charity organization Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD).

“Even after he was placed under house arrest in December, the government took steps to soften the blow, allowing him, for instance, to hold a defiant news conference before his confinement began,” it said.

While the Pakistan government has been maintaining that it is seriously carrying out the probe regarding the 26/11 massacre, and tried to show the same to the international community especially the US by booking Saeed under the anti-terrorism act, its ‘bluff’ was laid bare when Saeed’s lawyer disclosed that the case registered against his client were ‘very weak’.

“I have gone through both the FIRs against Saeed thoroughly. The charges against my client are very weak. He has expressed his views like any other Pakistani,” Saeed’s lawyer AK Dongar told a private television channel.

Pakistani authorities also revealed that they have not received any instructions for arresting Saeed despite the registration of two cases against him. (ANI)

Italian police seize Maradona’s diamond studs

Rome, Sep 19 (ANI): Beleaguered football legend Diego Maradona had to hand over his diamond studs to police as part payment for the millions he owes the Italian tax authorities.

Italian officials paid the holidaying Argentinean coach a visit at the luxury hotel he was staying in and seized the earrings worth nearly 4,000 pounds, Sky News reports.

Police claimed that Maradona still owes some 20 million pounds, dating back to his seven-year stint at the Italian club Napoli, where he frequently failed to pay income tax.

After fleeing Buenos Aires on Monday following Argentina’s four defeats in five matches of 2010 World Cup qualifier, Maradona, 48, is currently staying at a spa in the town of Merano in north-eastern Italy, where he is trying to lose weight.

Italian authorities had seized two of his Rolex watches worth 11,000 pounds in 2006, when he was staying near Naples.

In 2005, they seized the money he was to receive for taking part in a TV dancing show.

Four years earlier, he was met by 20 police officers as he got off a plane in Rome.

Italy’s Supreme Court ordered the ex-footballer to pay 36 million euros in unpaid taxes.

According to the association of Italian taxpayers, Maradona still has 22.4 million euros to pay.

Recently, Brazilian legend Pele took a blow at Maradona, saying he feels another Argentine-born player, Alfredo di Stefano, is the best player ever.

“Maradona was a great player, but he could not kick with his right foot and did not score goals with his head.

The only time he scored an important goal with his head, it turned out he had used his hand,” Pele said referring to Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ goal against England in 1986 World Cup. (ANI)

Wenger dubs game against Celtic more ‘massive’ than fixture against Man U

Burnley’s win was written in stars, says Ferguson

London, Aug 20(ANI): Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson saw Burnley defeating The Red Devils for the first time in 41 years, but he feels that the win was written in the stars. You wonder if it is fate, with Burnley back in the Premier League. It has been a long time,” The Sun quoted Ferguson, as saying.

“You can’t deny them their victory. They worked their socks off and the fans were fantastic,” he added.

The 67-year-old said that it was a horrible performance, which had nothing to write home about as Burnley’s promising young forward Robbie Blake took all the accolades by scoring a stunning goal.

“It was a bad performance by us. We should have done more with the chances and possession we had,” Ferguson said.

“It’s a bad blow and a bad result. People say we are never good at the start of the season, but we should not be losing these games,” he added.

Following one of the most embarrassing Premier League defeats in their history, Ferguson also refused to put the blame on his strikers, who have scored only once in the first two games of their title defence.

“I think we would have won if we had scored that penalty. If we had been level at half-time, it might have made a difference. The lack of goals is not a concern at this stage, when you see the hances we’ve had,” he added. (ANI)

Pak-trained militants spreading Islamic radicalism in Central Asia

Kosh-Korgon (Kyrgyzstan), Aug.18 (ANI): Some Central Asians are reported to have acquired training from the Taliban in Pakistan and Afghanistan and are now spreading Islamic radicalism in the region.

Kyrgyz security services recently tracked down three locals soon after their arrival. They stormed a building along the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border where they were staying, killed two of them, while a third blew himself up.

The security operation was one in a recent spate of firefights and attacks in Central Asia that have raised concerns that homegrown militants with experience in Afghanistan and Pakistan may be trying to move north to take on the region’s brittle governments, reports the New York Times.

Senior officials and analysts across Central Asia have said in recent weeks that there is evidence that some Central Asians who were allied with the Taliban are retreating from Afghanistan because of pressure from the NATO mission there.

“Our belief is that because of the blow they suffered in Afghanistan, they left for a calmer place in Central Asia where they could resume operations – either to regroup or to even open up a new front,” said Kadyr K. Malikov, director of the Independent Analytical Research Center for Religion, Law and Politics in Bishkek, the Kyrgyz capital.

The officials and analysts said one result could be a strengthening of Islamic movements in Central Asia, especially here in the Fergana Valley, which includes parts of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. All three countries are former Soviet republics with secular leaders and Muslim populations.

The valley has long been considered one of the region’s most unstable areas because of poverty, militancy and loose borders.

Warnings about the spread of Islamic radicalism to Central Asia are not new, and the region’s governments have long used this supposed threat to justify severe restrictions on political freedom.

But if these recent signs point to a revival, it could pose difficulties for the United States and other NATO members, which have military bases throughout Central Asia that support operations in Afghanistan.

Whatever the deeply held views of people here, some experts and opposition politicians in Central Asia said the danger of a renewed Islamic insurgency was being overstated.

They pointed out that these countries are secular in character because of their decades in the Soviet Union and that it would be all but impossible for the Taliban to gain a foothold here because they are rooted in an ethnic group, the Pashtuns. (ANI)

Cockroaches can survive climate change by holding their breath to save water

London, August 18 (ANI): A new study has found that cockroaches can hold their breath to save water, a trick that could help them to thrive in the face of climate change.

When cockroaches are resting, they periodically stop breathing for as long as 40 minutes, though why they do so has been unclear.

According to a report in New Scientist, to investigate the mystery, Natalie Schimpf and her colleagues at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, examined whether speckled cockroaches change their breathing pattern in response to changes in carbon dioxide (CO2) or oxygen concentration, or humidity.

They conclude that cockroaches close the spiracles through which they breathe primarily to save water. In dry environments, the insects took shorter breaths than in moist conditions.

“Cockroaches lose water across their respiratory surfaces when they breathe, so taking shorter breaths in dry conditions reduces the amount of water they will lose,” said Schimpf.

The nifty breath-holding adaptation has allowed cockroaches to colonise drier habitats and may allow them to thrive in climate change, according to George McGavin of the University of Oxford.

“Cockroaches have an awesome array of adaptations to life on dry land,” said McGavin.

“Living in the humid conditions of a rainforest, where they evolved, might be plain sailing, but cockroaches are adaptable and can cope in a wide range of environmental conditions,” he added.

According to McGavin, “Two hundred and fifty million years of physiological fine tuning has produced a creature that will be around for a long time to come. Cockroaches, I’m afraid to say, will do well in the face of climate change.”

The study deals a blow to the theory that cockroaches hold their breath to survive underground, where CO2 levels can be poisonous.

“They held their breath no longer in high-CO2 than in low-CO2 conditions,” said Schimpf. (ANI)

Libyan extremist group severs ties with Al-Qaeda over ‘indiscriminate violence’

London, July 10 (ANI): What may be seen as a severe blow to Al-Qaeda, one of its ally, the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG) has decided to severe its ties with Osama bin Laden saying that the “indiscriminate bombings” and the “targeting of civilians” was not in accordance to its objectives.

This is the first such instance when an ally of Al-Qaeda has parted ways with it due to its policy of ‘indiscriminate violence.’

The LIFG, which once aimed to topple Colonel Muammar Gaddafi in Libya, criticised Al-Qaeda for carrying out attacks on innocent civilians and said that such violent activities did not achieve the “aims of the group in removing oppression.”

Officials believe that the LIFG’s back out is a great blow to Al-Qaeda which is facing a massive surge by the US led allied forces in Afghanistan at the moment.

“LIFG figures had ‘graduated to become major players’ in al-Qaeda and the group’s withdrawal amounted to a ‘moral blow’ to the network,” The Telegraph quoted an official, as saying.

A statement issued by the LIFG claimed that the group had no link with Al-Qaeda in the past.

“The decision to join bin Laden’s network had been invalid, and the LIFG had no link to the Al-Qaeda organisation in the past and has none now and we demand that those parties remove the name of the Fighting Group from those lists,” the statement said.

During the 1990′s the LIFG’s leaders were forced out of Libya. They then escaped to Afghanistan and started coming closer to different extremists groups based there such as Al-Qaeda. (ANI)
