BJP, Cong trade charges on Shahpur violence

R C Faldu says ‘misuse’ of CBI by Congress has encouraged antisocial elements in Gujarat

State BJP president R C Faldu on Wednesday held the Congress responsible for the communal clashes in the walled city area of Ahmedabad, saying the CBI arrest of IPS officer Abhay Chudasama had emboldened antisocial elements.

In a joint press statement, Faldu and BJP national vice-president Parshottam Rupala alleged that the clashes were borne of a conspiracy to defame Gujarat and hinder its development. “With the Congress trying to morally weaken the Gujarat Police by misusing the CBI, the antisocial and anti-national elements are emboldened. The peace loving people of Gujarat will not let such efforts to be successful,” they said.

Reacting to this, Gujarat Congress president Siddharth Patel said the clashes were result of the BJP-led government’s failure. He alleged it was engineered by BJP leaders and workers themselves to divert people’s attention from the CBI probe into the Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Tulsiram Prajapati encounter cases. “The BJP is trying to run away from its responsibilities and hence unnecessarily accusing the Congress,” he said, adding: “It is BJP leaders and workers who are involved in the violence, and not any antisocial element as is being projected by the saffron leaders.”

BJP likely to take final call on Jharkhand government today

New Delhi, May 14 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to arrive at a consensus over who will be Jharkhand’s new chief minister on Friday.

Senior BJP leaders are meeting here to finalise the name.

After the meeting, the party is likely to send observers to Ranchi to convey its decision to party MLAs.

Interacting with media in Chandigarh on Thursday, BJP president Nitin Gadkari said the party would take a final call on Friday.

“I had only a brief meeting with party observers in Delhi yesterday as I was flying to Chandigarh. Tomorrow evening, when I will return to Delhi, I will be meeting them and other senior leaders,” Gadkari said.

Meanwhile, the lack of consensus among BJP leaders has led to a delay in arriving at a solution to the crisis.

The JMM is insisting on a rotational power sharing arrangement.

Under that scheme, the BJP would get to head the state government for 28 months followed by the JMM for another 28 months.

Apparently, the JMM has agreed to let the BJP the first chance at chief ministership although the JMM has already been heading the government for the last five months.

The JMM-BJP coalition government plunged into a political crisis after the BJP withdrew support to government in the wake of Chief Minister Shibu Soren voting in favour of the UPA during the cut motion in parliament on April 27.

The BJP first announced it would immediately withdraw support from the JMM-led government, which would have brought it down and effectively led to the imposition of President”s Rule or attempts by the Congress to form an alternative government.

However, by April 29 when the party received a letter from Hemant Soren, son of the Chief Minister Shibu Soren, offering to support the BJP in leading the coalition, the withdrawal of support was “put on hold” and a dialogue was opened. (ANI)

BJP meets to resolve Jharkhand crisis

New Delhi, Apr 30 (ANI): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders have begun a meeting here today to discuss the ongoing Jharkhand crisis.

“Decision to align with Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) would be taken only after Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren”s proposal,” party sources said.

Soren had reportedly written to BJP President Nitin Gadkari apologizing to him and other senior leaders Lal Krishna Advani and Sushma Swaraj for voting in favour of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government during Tuesday”s cut motion.

In his letter, Soren conceded that his support to the UPA Government during the cut motion moved by the Opposition was a mistake. He pleaded with Swaraj for justice for the people of Jharkhand.

The JMM leader wrote that he had sacrificed his life for the people of Jharkhand and was now indisposed.

Shibu Soren”s son Hemant Soren had earlier on Wednesday expressed his regret to the BJP for his father”s error, asserting that the Chief Minister was ready to resign and urged the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to take a fresh initiative to form a government with a new leader.

Hemant said the state wasn”t ready to face another poll.

“The JMM is ready to make a sacrifice for Guruji”s (Soren”s) mistake,” he said.

The BJP has till now declined Hemant Soren”s offer.

The JMM-led Government in Jharkhand was reduced to a minority on Wednesday after the BJP withdrew its support.

After the BJP”s pullout, the ruling coalition was reduced to having 28 seats from the original 46 it had in a House of 81.

Soren was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand for a third time on December 30, 2009.

He had formed the government with a five-party coalition.

Soren had secured the support of 44 MLAs in the 81-member House after the assembly elections in Jharkhand gave a fractured verdict.

The JMM had 18 seats, BJP had 18 seats, Janata Dal-United (JD-U) had two seats, All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) had five seats and Jharkhand Janadhikar Manch (JJM) had one seat in the assembly.

“The JMM is ready to make a sacrifice for Guruji”s (Soren”s) mistake,” he said.

The BJP has, however, declined the offer made by Hemant Soren.

Meanwhile, the BJP Parliamentary Board met again today under the leadership of Lal Krishna Advani and Sushma Swaraj to decide further proceedings.

It is reported that the BJP leaders will meet the Jharkhand Governor M.O.H. Farook this evening and convey their decision to withdraw support to Soren”s JMM.

BJP stands firm on decision to withdraw support from Soren

New Delhi, Apr 29 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday said that it is firm on its decision to withdraw support from the Shibu Soren”s Government in Jharkhand after he voted against the cut motion.

The BJP said there is no indication from the party”s Parliamentary Board to reconsider decision on Soren.

Shibu Soren”s son Hemant Soren had on Wednesday expressed his regret to the BJP for his father”s error, asserting that the Chief Minister was ready to resign and urged the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to take a fresh initiative to form a government with a new leader.

Hemant said the state wasn”t ready to face another poll.

“The JMM is ready to make a sacrifice for Guruji”s (Soren”s) mistake,” he said.
The BJP has, however, declined the offer made by Hemant Soren.

Asked whether Hemant”s “offer” would prompt a rethink, senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu said: “We can hear out the father and son. We are going to meet the governor tomorrow. But we will also discuss with the party”s state unit and get a sense of what they feel.”

“All this wisdom should have dawned on Hemant Soren before voting,” said a BJP leader.

Meanwhile, it is reported that the BJP Parliamentary Board has met today under the leadership of Lal Krishna Advani and Sushma Swaraj to decide further proceedings.

The BJP leaders in Jharkhand as reported will meet the Governor only after a nod from the Central leadership.

Babri mosque demolition case: IPS officer says Advani gave incendiary speeches

Rae Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh), Mar 26 (ANI): Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Anju Gupta, who is on deputation with the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) in Delhi, on Friday told a Rae Bareilly court that senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Lal Krishna Advani gave incendiary speeches on December 6, 1992 asserting that the temple would be built at the same place.

Gupta, who was posted as Advani”s personal security officer during the period, said in the court, “I received Advani from the Faisabad border and he was present at the Ram Katha Kunj along with a host of other BJP leaders.”

“Kalraj Mishra, Murli Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharti, Vinay Katiyar, Giriraj Kishore, Ashok Singhal and Pramod Mahajan were the other leaders present at the venue,” she added.

“Advani said to his supporters that the temple would be built at the same place,” she claimed.

Encouraged by Advani”s speech, Gupta further said the ”Kar Sevaks” moved towards the area with daggers in their hands, as the Ram Katha Kunj was only 150 meters away from the site.

She also said that senior BJP leader Vinay Katiyar provoked the crowd.

Earlier, she arrived in court this morning to record her testimony as a witness for the prosecution against senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Lal Krishna Advani and other Sangh Parivar leaders.

Gupta was posted as Advani”s personal security officer during the period when the BJP was bringing its supporters to Ayodhya for ”kar seva” at the mosque, claimed by the Sangh Parivar to be the birthplace of Lord Rama.

Immediately after the riots in 1993, Gupta had told the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) how Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharti and the rest had expressed delight over the demolition of the mosque.

CBI Director Ashwani Kumar had reportedly written to Cabinet Secretary K Chandrashekhar urging him to release Gupta for the important hearing on the Babri Mosque demolition case.

A special Ayodhya court in Rae Bareilly had earlier discharged Advani on the plea that charges against him were based on mere suspicion. The CBI dropped the charge of criminal conspiracy – Section 120 B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) – in its revised charge sheet submitted before the Rae Bareilly court on the directives of the Allahabad High Court.

The revised chargesheet contained relatively milder sections under the Indian Penal Code – Sections 153-A, 153-B (propagating communal violence), 147, 149 (rioting) and 505 (spreading ill-will). This was believed to be the result of CBI”s failure to press the charges strongly. (ANI)

‘Shadow’ standing panels to sharpen BJP MPs’ skills

New Delhi, March 16 (IANS) In a move aimed at sharpening skills of its MPs taking part in deliberations of parliamentary panels, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to form ‘shadow standing committees’, comprising senior members and experts, to provide guidance on bills, policy matters and financial issues.

BJP leaders said that shadow standing committee was an attempt to use the ‘intellectual bank’ of the party to sharpen skills of members taking part in the standing committees.

‘It will improve performance of our MPs in standing committees and also in parliamentary debates. The MPs will also be told of the party line on various bills,’ a senior party leader said.

BJP leaders said that subject experts will be associated with the 24 shadow standing committees that the party intends to set up.

RSS chief calls on former PM Vajpayee

New Delhi, Sep.4 (ANI): The chief of the Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh (RSS), Mohan Rao Bhagwat, met former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee in the national capital on Friday.

Bhagwat is said to have inquired after Vajpayee’s health. The two leaders are also believed to have discussed the latest crisis engulfing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)

Last month, all eyes were on Bhagwat as he visited New Delhi for discussions with the BJP leadership.

Bhagwat had then said that BJP leaders LK Advani and Rajnath Singh would decide on their role within the party.

Talking to reporters then, Bhagwat said, “Rajnathji, Advaniji and others will decide on their role in the party. Everything will be fine in the BJP in future.”

“There are people with moral standing like Advani and under their guidance, they will solve all problems. We have nothing to do with this,” he added

While the BJP had said that Rajnath Singh will not get an extension as party president beyond his three-year term that ends in December, there were reports that Advani may step down as Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha but the timing for it has been left to him.

Bhagwat had a breakfast meeting with Advani and had discussions with other senior leaders.

The meeting took place amid reports that the RSS has readied a succession plan for the BJP.

However, BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar told reporters at a press conference that no succession plan was discussed.

This is not good for the democracy of the country. We may benefit out of the crisis in our rival party but country’s main opposition must be stable, strong and fulfil its duties efficiently,” Chaturvedi said.

BJP leaders have been holding hectic parleys with Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) following the crisis in the party which triggered after the expulsion of senior leader Jaswant Singh for writing a book on Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan.

Rajnath Singh comment came in response to Saturday statement by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in which he said: “The situation in the BJP is not good…it is BJP’s internal matter but stability in political parties is most necessary in a democracy, otherwise, it will have an impact on the country.”

BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar informed the media on Sunday that Rajnath had written a letter to Singh in this regard.

” Rather than worrying about he development in the BJP, we urge you to concentrate on the developmental work. The farmers of the country are suffering from the drought. Various names are under consideration, including Arun Jaitely, Sushma Swaraj and Bal Apte. However, both the RSS and the BJP have maintained that they were not discussing any succession plan. (ANI)

RSS’s Ram Madhav rules out working on BJP succession plan

New Delhi, Aug 29 (ANI): National Executive Committee member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Ram Madhav on Saturday ruled out any succession plan for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) being drawn up or discussed between the Sangh and party leaders.

Speaking outside the Sangh headquarters after a meeting between the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha L.K. Advani and RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat, Madhav said, “No…No…succession plan being drawn or discussed in the meeting of the Sangh and the BJP leaders. It’s all your speculation.”

“The meeting between the BJP leaders and the Sangh chief is a routine activity and they are discussing the issues related to party’s internal development and also issue related to national importance,” Madhav said.

He added that “The exchange of views and opinion among the Sangh subordinate is a continuous process, accordingly leaders of various units of the Sangh are coming here to meet Bhagwatji, and there is no need to speculate about the change of leadership in the BJP.”

Apart from Advani, the international Chairman of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) Ashok Singhal and former Uttarakhand Chief Minister B.C. Khanduri also met Bhagwat on Saturday.

In a rare press meet on Friday, Bhagwat, ruled out of the RSS being a back seat driver for the BJP, and asked the BJP to resolve its internal issues quickly.

Advani, BJP leaders have not discussed a succession plan: Javadeka

New Delhi, Aug.29 (ANI): Leader of Opposition L. K. Advani and other leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did not discussion a succession plan, as was being projected in the media, said a party spokesman on Saturday.

Prakash Javadekar told a press conference that the BJP’s parent organization – the Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh (RSS) had not chalked out a succession plan on Friday, and neither had the BJP leadership discussed the issue at Saturday’s meeting at Advani’s residence in the national capital.

‘No succession plan was discussed. No change in leadership or posts was discussed,” Javadekar, adding that over the past couple of days, the RSS had only come forward with suggestions that could “Pave the way for a more smooth functioning of the BJP”.

Reacting to the comments that were being aired in the media by expelled party leader Jaswant Singh against the BJP and its present leadership, Javadekar said:

“We continue to respect Jaswant Singh even after his comments. We don’t want to say anything. But the fact of the matter is that if a leader who once belonged to the BJP and spoke well of it while he was a member for years, now chooses to criticize its policies on the hour, the people will realize soon enough who is right and who is wrong.”

Jaswant Singh has been targeting Advani on the latter’s views on Pakistan founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah, and his role in the 1999 Kandahar hijack case and the July 2008 Cash for Vote scam.

Javadekar’s statement to the media came as Advani arrived at the RSS’s Delhi headquarters – Keshavkunj – for a meeting with its chief Mohan Bhagwat.

The meeting is taking place amid reports that the RSS has readied a succession plan for the BJP, a plan that could facilitate an end to the internal crisis ravaging the party’s rank and file.

The RSS is believed to have told the BJP leadership to set its house in order. In a sign that this is being given serious thought, top brass of the BJP met at Advani’s residence this morning for about two hours and briefed him about their discussions with Bhagwat on Friday.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj had joined other party colleagues – Arun Jaitely, Ananth Kumar and M.Venkaiah Naidu at the residence of Advani to reportedly discuss a viable succession plan.

It is reliably learnt that though there are no immediate changes in the top leadership, a succession plan is being readied after discussions with the RSS on Friday night.

Sources said that the RSS has firmly asked BJP leaders to end infighting in the party and reach a consensus on a new party chief.

The decision to call Jaitley and Swaraj together to a meeting at the RSS headquarters is seen as very significant, as they are the leading contenders for the party leadership, sparking speculation that a power-sharing arrangement might have been arrived at.

Jaitley looks the front-runner for the party chief’s job while Swaraj is tipped to take over from Advani as Leader of Opposition. If implemented, the party could see Naidu becoming Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, a post currently held by Jaitley.

The RSS has felt that if the factionalism is not quickly resolved, the issue could prolong till the end of the year. (ANI)
