Palestinians take Gandhi’s path and win followers

West Bank, Apr.29 (ANI): Though militancy and stone throwing remain deeply ingrained in the
Palestinian psyche, passive resistance protests on the lines of what India’s iconic leader Mahatma Gandhi followed and espoused at the turn of the 20th century, is gaining favor with some West Bank politicians and the public.

It”s taken years, but the predominantly passive Palestinian protest movement started in Bilin seems to be making inroads among a broader swath of Palestinians, winning public support from the likes of Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, reports the Christian Science Monitor (CSM).

Frustrated with unending peace talks and disillusioned with the recent military Intifada, many Palestinians are looking for a new path to statehood.

Those advocating passive resistance are asking Palestinians to swallow a bitter pill — accepting the inefficacy of Arab militants against Israel”s military superiority.

Organizers in Bilin admit that moving Palestinians away from stone throwing to the fully non-violent doctrine of passive resistance promoted by Gandhi in India and American civil rights leader Reverend Martin Luther King in the segregated south of the 1950s is not easy.

Palestinians believe they have the right to armed resistance and rock throwing under international law, and therefore, it would take more courage to lie in front of a bulldozer.

Abandoning violence for the most part, Bilin residents along with international and Israeli sympathizers have staged marches to the Israel”s security fence for the last five years. (ANI)

Prior vows to fight for his place in England squad

London, Apr 1 (ANI): England wicketkeeper Matt Prior, who was axed from the 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup in the West Indies, has promised to fight for his place after admitting that it was a bitter pill to be dumped.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) called up Hampshire opening batsman Michael Lumb and Somerset wicketkeeper batsman Craig Kieswetter into final squad for next month’s World Twenty20 Cup in the Caribbean.

There is no place for Matt Prior, who loses his wicket-keeping slot to Kieswetter. Prior has not been dropped for his keeping abilities, but because of his failure to score consistent runs in one-day cricket.

Prior said: “I’m not the sort of guy who walks around feeling sorry for himself or making excuses, but I’m not going to pretend that it doesn’t hurt.

“I want to be involved in every form of the game and it will be hard for me to watch somebody else keeping wicket for us in the Caribbean when I’ve worked so hard to improve my own game,” The Mirror quoted Prior, as saying.

“Don’t worry, I won’t be moping around for the next couple of months – I’ll be getting stuck in for Sussex to make sure I’m ready if and when I get my England place back,” he said.

“My keeping has come on leaps and bounds since I broke into the side three years ago, and it would have been an even more bitter pill to swallow if I had performed badly and lost my place through playing badly.

“I’ve had long chats with national selector Geoff Miller and our coach Andy Flower, and I’ve assured them I’ll be fighting like mad and working as hard as I can to play for England again,” Prior added.

Kieswetter, who only qualified for England two months ago, will be paired with Lumb at the top of the order in a new-look batting line-up with a heavy emphasis on hitting sixes. (ANI)

Bitter pill: Showtime passes on Tim Robbins drama

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – And then there were none.

In a surprising move, Showtime on Friday passed on Tim Robbins’ well-regarded pharmaceutical-drama pilot “Possible Side Effects.”

That makes it 0-4 for the premium cable network, which originally ordered four pilots in this go-round, including “Side Effects.”

In the past week, Showtime passed on the other three pilots, the “L Word” spin-off starring Leisha Hailey, the Matthew Perry/Peter Tolan comedy “The End of Steve” and the comedy “Ronna and Beverly.”

The dismissal of “Side Effects” is noteworthy because the project was penned and directed by Oscar winner Robbins and attracted top talent, including Ellen Burstyn, Josh Lucas and Tim Blake Nelson.

It is said to have tested very highly, and with the other three pilots out of contention, it was considered a shoo-in for a series order.

Industry observers on Friday were scratching their heads over Showtime’s decision, with some pointing to the show’s subject matter as a potential reason.

“Side Effect” takes a scathing look at the pharmaceutical drug industry, focusing on a dysfunctional family behind a major drug concern.

As a premium cable network, Showtime does not rely on advertisers, but its parent company CBS Corp. does, and pharmaceutical companies are among the top TV advertisers.

Like several other pilots rejected by Showtime, “Side Effects” might be shopped elsewhere.

Chelsy Davy ‘trying to win back Prince Harry with pub crawl’

London, Mar 1 (ANI): It seems that Chelsy Davy is trying to win back Prince Harry.

The 23-year-old Zimbabwean student is said to be upset with reports that the prince had been flirting with Aussie singer Natalie Imbruglia.

Chelsy has asked Harry to join her and her pals on the infamous Otley Mile pub run next month.

The route takes in around 20 bars, passing through the university’s playing fields and student flats before heading to the city-centre night clubs.

She believes that the pub run will be the perfect opportunity to re-introduce Harry into her life publicly.

“If you’re a student in Leeds, this is one of the biggest events on the social calendar. You don’t just take anyone,” the News of the World quoted a friend as saying.

“Chelsy really wants Harry to be there and for them to be seen as a couple again. She’s missed him more than she thought she would,” the friend added.

While Harry has told Chelsy there was nothing going on with Natalie but according to a source “Chelsy was jealous.”

“Her biggest worry has been what would happen when Harry found another girl.

“It would be a bitter pill for her to swallow and she’s not ready for it.

“She now thinks she may never be ready for it,” the source added.

Chelsy apparently dumped the British royal on Facebook. Harry came to know of her decision when he saw her relationship status changed to “Not in one”. (ANI)
