China”s love affair with Rabindranath Tagore

New Delhi, May 15 (ANI): On Monday, China paid tribute to one of India’s most revered writers, Rabindranath Tagore, by giving impassioned readings of his poems.

Star elocutionists Cao Lei and Liu Jiazhen read out Tagore’s poems at the Shanghai Expo””s Indian Pavilion – for an event celebrating the 149th anniversary of the Indian writer, educationist and visionary””s birth.

Tagore visited China three times in the 1920s and is the most widely translated foreign author in Chinese after Shakespeare.

His first visit to China in 1924 attracted mixed reactions. New-wave poets such as Xu Zhimo (1897-1931), with whom Tagore forged a lasting bond, were moved by the music and clarity of his poetry.

“Luckily for him, Tagore was translated by some of the best Chinese poets of the time,” China Daily quoted Zhao Lihong, vice-chairman of the Shanghai Writers”” Association who lit the ceremonial lamp at Tagore””s birthday celebrations at the Indian Pavilion with Riva Ganguly Das, Indian Consul-General, as saying.

“Guo Moruo, Bin Xing and Xu Zhimo, excellent writers themselves, were able to appreciate the ethos, technique, emotion and nuanced use of language in Tagore””s writing,” Zhao says.

Tagore’s readings gained spotlight after 1979, when Zhao wrote an article, Little Bird, Where are you Going?, exploring Tagore””s impact on the poetry written by his generation.

Now in 2010, young people are quoting from Tagore in Valentine””s Day messages. Young media professional Xi Qin recently read Tagore to help with research for a documentary and realized “I was missing out on a part of my nation””s history that we were not taught in school”. She found herself inscrutably drawn to Tagore””s “expressive” and “imaginative” language.

Zhang Xiaoyu, a student at the Communications University of China in Beijing, loves singing Tagore””s inspirational number championing the values of freedom and democracy, “In this land of kings, we are kings all”.

“I won””t say this is another high tide of Tagore appreciation in China,” Zhao says. “But the fact that young people are still reading Tagore in considerable numbers, blogging about his poems on the Internet, despite the wide range of options available, is a positive sign.” (ANI)

Crumbling city hall reopens for 80th birthday

Brisbane City Hall celebrates its 80th birthday today but concerns remain about who will foot the bill for its $215 million refurbishment.

The building is closed for major repairs but will temporarily reopen today for birthday celebrations.

The landmark building opened in 1930 but in recent years it began to crumble.

It was closed in December to allow for $215 million worth of structural, electrical and safety repairs.

Deputy Council Opposition Leader Milton Dick says ratepayers have not been told where the money is coming from.

“Currently looking at a shortfall of about $185 million,” he said.

A committee has been set up to raise funds but Lord Mayor Campbell Newman says at this stage he cannot say how much has been donated.

“At the end of the day the restoration bill will be presented to people in an open and transparent way,” he said.

He says more funding details will be revealed in the council budget.

Councillor Newman says the $215 million restoration project is progressing well.

“When visitors today go through City Hall on a free guided tour they’ll see a forest of scaffolding in the central auditorium that goes right up to the top dome,” he said.

“It’s quite spectacular and it shows the magnitude of the work and the effort required to actually deal with the problems in this building.”

Celebrations planned for Dalai Lama’s 74th birthday

Dharamsala, July 4 (IANS) Thousands of Tibetan exiles are expected to assemble in this Himachal Pradesh town Monday for celebrations to mark the 74th birthday of their spiritual leader the Dalai Lama.

“Exiles, monks and well-wishers will join the birthday celebrations of His Holiness (the Dalai Lama) Monday. They will pray for the well-being and long life of their icon of peace and wisdom,” Tenzin Taklha, joint secretary at the Dalai Lama’s office, told IANS.

Special prayers have been planned at the hilltop Tsuglagkhang temple close to the official palace of the Dalai Lama at McLeodganj near here.

“Representatives of the Tibetan parliament and the Tibetan cabinet will also attend the celebrations. Visiting Australian parliamentarians will be the chief guests on the occasion,” said Taklha.

A delegation of six Australian parliamentarians comprising Labour MPs Michael Danby and Melissa Parke, Liberal MP Peter Slipper, Independent Senator Nick Xenophon, and Greens Senators Scott Ludlam and Sarah Hanson-Young are on a weeklong visit here.

However, the Dalai Lama won’t be present here Monday and will attend celebrations in New Delhi.

“The spiritual guru will attend the celebrations organised by the Himalayan Buddhist Association in Delhi. It is for expressing gratitude to their spiritual leader for completing 50 years of his stay in India,” said Taklha.

Last year, the Nobel laureate’s birthday celebrations were largely subdued due to unrest in Tibet.

Born on July 6, 1935 at Taktser hamlet in northeastern Tibet, the Dalai Lama was recognised at the age of two as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama Thubten Gyatso. He fled Tibet after a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959, basing his Tibetan government-in-exile here.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his non-violent campaign for democracy and freedom in his homeland. Ever since he fled to India, he has spent his time in exile pushing for autonomy for Tibet.

The Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, has been following a “middle-path” policy that seeks “greater autonomy” for Tibetans rather than complete independence.

The Dalai Lama has increasingly voiced his frustration with the situation and has said that he has now given up trying to win concessions from Beijing.

“Things are not going well… I have to accept failure… my trust with the Chinese leadership (is) now thinner, thinner, thinner,” the Tibetan leader has said.

Though he looks healthy, the deteriorating health of the elderly monk in recent months is a matter of concern for the community in exile.

He was admitted to Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi in October 2008, where he underwent a gall bladder surgery. Earlier, he was admitted to the Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai twice with abdominal discomfort. Subsequently, he had also cancelled his visits to Europe, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

But he has returned to his gruelling schedule, travelling around the globe to speak on Buddhism and human rights.

After India allowed the Dalai Lama to settle here, Dharamsala became an attraction for Westerners in search of Tibetan culture and spiritual sustenance. Hollywood stars such as Richard Gere are frequent visitors here.

A total of 140,000 Tibetans now live in exile, over 100,000 of them in different parts of India. Over six million Tibetans live in Tibet.

Prince William, Kate ‘sneak off for romantic weekend as Mr and Mrs Smith’

London, June 22 (ANI): Prince William and his girlfriend Kate Middleton reportedly booked a holiday home under the names of Mr and Mrs Smith recently.

The couple allegedly spent a romantic weekend as part of birthday celebrations for the royal, who turned 27 on June 21.

“They have been staying at private house under the assumed name Mr and Mrs Smith,” British tabloid The Sun quoted a source as saying.

“It is quite funny really that they feel they need to go to such great lengths to keep their visit a secret – but I suppose it adds to the romance,” the source added.

The couple were purportedly joined by younger royal Harry and a group of friends for a boozy beach bash.

The brothers were said to have guzzled beer and cider and played football before building a fire.

The loverbirds, who have been surrounded with speculations suggesting they are soon to announce their wedding plans, later watched the sun set together. (ANI)

Mom’s no show at Brooke Hogan’s 21st birthday bash

Washington, May 13 (ANI): Brooke Hogan’s mother Linda Bollea was notably absent from her daughter’s 21st birthday party.

The singer brought in her coming-of-age birth anniversary last week at Sin City’s Spago Restaurant alongside her boyfriend, father Hulk, brother Nick, and a few close friends.

Brooke made multiple efforts to contact her mother and let her know that she was more than welcome at any of her birthday celebrations, and that she would love her to be there.

But, a source said, Linda preferred not to attend the intimate affair.

“Linda was really, really hurt. But Brooke has sided with her father in all of this, she was adamant about not celebrating with her mom or extending an invitation,” Fox News quoted another source as saying.

And after the dinner, Brooke partied with her beau inside PURE nightclub, while typically protective Hulk looked on disapprovingly.

Linda filed for divorce from the semi-retired, pro-wrestling husband in November 2007. (ANI)

1ST LEAD: No happy returns for Ljubicic with loss on 30th birthday

Indian Wells, California – Andy Murray had his difficult moments before managing to snuff the candles on the 30th birthday celebrations of opponent Ivan Ljubicic 7-5,
7-6 (8-6) in the quarter- finals of the Indian Wells Masters on Thursday.

Fourth seed Murray denied the Croatian many happy returns on court with the battling victory in just over two hours, to set up one-half of a potential dream semi-final in California. . Murray was awaiting the winner from an evening meeting between second seed Roger Federer, who was facing Australian Open semi-finalist Fernando Verdasco.

Murray has beaten Federer three times since losing the US Open final to the Swiss six months ago, and also stands 3-0 in their three meetings at the Masters 1000 level.

The 74th-ranked Ljubicic put Murray under constant pressure in their quarter-final, refusing to roll over as the Scot took leads.

The veteran broke Murray back in the second set for 5-5 and then stole a 6-5 lead in a game concluded with a pair of thundering aces, his fifth and sixth of the afternoon at the Tennis Garden.

Murray answered with a love game for 6-6 to send the set into a tiebreaker, with Ljubicic saving a match point in the decider before finally falling as he played a quarter-finals in the desert for the third time in the past four years.

Lujbicic had saved five match points a day earlier in his win over Russian Igor Andreev.

Earlier, women’s defending champion Ana Ivanovic secured free passage into the final four when opponent Sybille Bammer withdrew with a left shoulder injury.

The walkover puts the fifth-seeded Serb into a semi-final against breakthrough Russian teenager Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who knocked out Polish seventh seed Agnieszwa Radwanska 7-6 (10-8), 6-4.

“I’m very disappointed that I am not able to play,” said Austrian Bammer, who added: “Tonight, I make an MRI, and I will check my shoulder and I will rest and I hope I am fine for Miami.

“I normally play very well here and it is a place I really enjoy. I was playing better and better every round, and had a good feeling about today’s match.

“Unfortunately, my shoulder injury is making it impossible for me to play. I hope that the injury heals quickly and that I am able to return to action soon.”

Pavlyuchenkova, ranked 42nd, was playing in her third quarter- final of the season after Sydney and Paris and has never advanced this far at the WTA level.

“I’m very excited now, and more and more every day because I keep winning,” said the Russian, who beat second seed Jelena Jankovic in the second round last week.

“It’s really big achievement for me this week. I beat some really good players.

“I’m very happy, especially today. It’s my first time in semis. I’ve played Agnieszka five or six times already. She’s a very tough player for me. I’m very happy I went through,” said Pavlyuchenkova. dpa

Paris Hilton continues birthday celebrations in Las Vegas

London, Mar 9 (ANI): American socialite Paris Hilton has continued her birthday celebrations since last month by flying 20 of her friends to Las Vegas by private jet, and partying until 5.30 in the morning.

Hilton, who turned 28 on February 17, was toasted by her new boyfriend Doug Reinhardt at a party, which included a pink carpet, private gig by Chester French, giant birthday cupcake, circus acts and a drum band dressed as Sesame Street characters.

She and her pals arrived at The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on March 7, and they began their evening with dinner at posh eating-place Nobu before heading to the hotel’s Body English nightclub.

American band Chester French performed a couple of tracks, especially for Hilton, and at the end of the evening she was presented with a giant cake shaped like a pink mushroom topped with a butterfly.

Hilton then got up on stage, and thanked everyone for coming, adding a few words about her new boyfriend Reinhardt.

“My man is right over there, the sexiest man in the world,” the Sun quoted her as saying before singing her candy pop single Stars Are Blind especially for him.

The hotel heiress and her group decided that they had not had enough fun, and headed up to the hotel’s plush penthouse suite to continue their celebrations with the Sesame Street band and circus performers.

And even with an eventful evening, Hilton was not done celebrating because she was heard telling her pals that there was more in store.

“Tonight will be more low key so that for tomorrow we will do it up, and who knows someone might get arrested, but we are in Vegas, so let’s party!” she said. (ANI)

Police baton charge BJP activists in Allahabad

Allahabad, Jan 17 (ANI): Police baton charged agitating activists of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) here on Friday, protesting against falling governance in the state.

The BJP has blamed the State’s ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Government for terrorising people and large-scale extortion prceeding the birthday celebrations of the Chief Minister Mayawati who also happens to be the chief of BSP.

About 5000 BJP activists staged a protest rally shouting anti-Mayawati led Government slogans before they were stopped by the police and forced to court arrest.

Many of the party activists were injured during the clash with the police.

“Police baton charged the activists who came to court arrest. We were in large numbers, but they forcibly pushed us into small vehicles. In the clash, 20 to 22 of our activists were injured,” said Mahendra Nath Pandey, head of Allahabad city unit of BJP.

In November, 2008, an engineer of Uttar Pradesh’s Public Works Department, K Gupta was beaten to death in Auraiya, allegedly by a legislator of State unit of the BSP.

It was alleged that the engineer met his end since he did not oblige the (legislator who was mobilising funds for the Chief Minister’s birthday bash fund. (ANI)

Mayawati says Sonia Gandhi’s birthday should be observed as ‘Ghulami Diwas’

Lucknow, Jan.15 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Thursday used her 53rd birthday celebrations to urge her supporters to observe Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s birthday as “Ghulami Diwas”, or “Slavery Day”.

Targetting each of her political rivals on the occasion, she also said that her predecessor and Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav’s birthday should be observed as “Dalal Diwas”, or “Brokers’ Day”.

“If I also decide to call them names just as they have been doing with me, I could teach the opposition parties a proper lesson in their own language,” Mayawati told the select gathering that converged at her official residence to greet her on her birthday.

“In that case, if I wanted, I could have got my party men to observe Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s birthday as ‘Ghulami Diwas’, considering that she was ruling the country despite being a person of foreign origin – a charge repeatedly levelled against her by several other political parties,” the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief quipped.

“In view of their blatant hobnobbing with big business houses, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s birthday could be observed as ‘Dalal Diwas’ (Brokers’ Day).”

As far as the Bharatiya Janata Party was concerned, the birthdays of its leaders could conveniently be termed as “Dhokadhari Diwas” (Cheating Day) for the way they had time and again let the leaders of other parties and the general public down.

“But instead of indulging in any such cheap act, we decided to stage dignified protests in each of Uttar Pradesh’s 403 state assembly constituencies as well as in several other parts of the country where our party men would hold demonstrations to mark their condemnation of the entire opposition tirade against me.”

These demonstrations have been termed as “Virodhi Party Dhikkar Diwas” (Day of Condemnation of Opposition Parties).

Mayawati’ birthday is celebrated as “Arthik Sahayog Diwas” or “Economic Upliftment Day” when party workers collect funds for her Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP). (ANI)
