Clark hopes next generation of Oz cricketers value country above the dollar

Sydney, Sep.17 (ANI): Experienced Australian seamer Stuart Clark has warned that he can only hope the next generation of Australian cricketers values playing for their country ahead of chasing the almighty dollar on offer in the Indian Premier League and next month’s Champions League.

Skipper Ricky Ponting, who said he expected more people to follow in the footsteps of English all-rounder Andrew Flintoff and pursue the shorter version of the game, backed up Clark.

According to the Daily Telegraph, former one-day star Michael Bevan also weighed into the money-v-country debate when he questioned how much longer cricketers would be prepared to support the Test scene now that there were lucrative alternatives.

“What scares me the most is where does it leave the game if people just go chasing large sums of money for a bit of hit-and-giggle,” Clark told The Big Sports Breakfast.

“I think we as players all owe it to Test cricket to try and keep it afloat. I know the administration is working hard at it, but I personally hold grave fears for where the game is heading,” he added.

Clark said he had noticed youngsters at NSW getting excited about the money at next month’s Champions League in India, which offers a three million dollar purse to the winner and could earn the players 130,000 dollars each – the equivalent of a top-end state contract.

Ponting said more players could snub Test cricket to copy Flintoff.

“I think it probably could happen more and more especially with guys retiring from Test match cricket and wanting to play only the shorter versions of the game,” he said.

Bevan, who scored nearly 7000 runs in 232 one-dayers for Australia, told The Daily Telegraph: “I’d like to hope there is a strong allegiance shown by the players to Test cricket, but up until what point they continue to do that I’m not sure.” (ANI)

Flintoff’s ECB contract rejection threatens Test cricket, but he plays it down

London, Sep.17 (ANI): All-rounder Andrew Flintoff may have unwittingly incited the break-up of international cricket by his refusal of an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) incremental contract, but he has played down reports of a possible backlash.

Flintoff has assured that his rejection of an England increment contract, a second tier deal offered to him because of his retirement from Test cricket, did not lessen his commitment to England. The all-rounder, who is Dubai undergoing rehabilitation after knee surgery, made it clear that he has no intention of missing any England games should they clash with matches in the various Twenty20 franchise competitions he also hopes to be part of.

Although Flintoff has put all negotiations on hold while he recovers he is known to have been in preliminary talks with teams in Australia, where their revamped Twenty20 competition is to be called the Big Bash and South Africa, where the Pro20 is easily the most popular professional cricket in the country.

Sean Morris, the chief executive of the Professional Cricketers’ Association, said yesterday that other players would join Flintoff in rejecting national deals and that there may be a rash of early retirements from international cricket.

“I think there will be a lot of serious discussion in Johannesburg later this month among the parties and between the parties. I can’t overestimate its importance. In the space of a few weeks we have had two leading players withdrawing from components of the international game, Andrew Flintoff from Tests and Ricky Ponting, from Twenty20 internationals,” The Telegraph quoted Morris, as saying.

Flintoff’s move may stimulate more than debate.

England captain Andrew Strauss was mildly surprised by the decision.

“I’m not going to sit in judgement of him because we don’t know the reasons. We need to sit down and speak to him about why he’s done this and we’ll then make an informed decision about what that means to his availability for England,” he said. (ANI)

Artist recreates Taj Mahal – with toothpicks!

London, September 12 (ANI): An artist has recreated the Taj Mahal and other famous landmarks around the world using toothpicks.

It took Stan Munro six years, six million toothpicks and more than 170 litres of glue as he built his latest exhibition, entitled ‘Toothpick City II – Temples and Towers’.

The 38-year-old’s models at the Museum of Science and Technology in Syracuse, New York, feature buildings such as Big Ben, Tower Bridge, The Vatican and Sydney’s Opera House.

“Toothpick City was so much fun to build, I decided to build another one. This one is bigger and much more detailed,” the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

“I want this exhibit to be a celebration of religious diversity, architectural achievement and historical accuracy – or just ‘wow, that’s a lot of toothpicks’.

“No one has built all these buildings to the same scale and put them side by side before – let alone out of toothpicks.

“I really wanted to see what it would look like. If you can’t travel the world, I want people to see this exhibit and think they just did,” he added. (ANI)

Lunar clock to be built by River Thames by 2012

London, September 3 (ANI): Scientists and artists are planning to build a 40m-wide lunar clock by the River Thames by the year 2012.

According to a report by BBC News, the aim is to create a new London landmark close to the proposed Olympic stadium as a monument to a more natural way of marking time.

The proposed site is at East India Dock, six miles along the river from Westminster Palace. It is currently a bedraggled nature reserve.

The designers of the clock hope that the instrument will become as iconic as Big Ben, which has been marking time for 150 years.

Laura Williams, an East London artist, explained that the clock would be powered by the tides from the Thames.

“There are three giant concentric rings made from recycled glass. Light shines through from the glass in time with the Moon’s cycles so the largest ring shows the lunar phase,” she said.

“Gradually, the light waxes on all the way around the ring and connects full circle when it’s full Moon,” she added.

“The second ring is like the big hand of the clock. It’s a marker of light that tracks the Moon around the globe so that’s the lunar day cycle,” said Williams.

“The third ring – the smallest – is the small hand that tracks the tide as it goes from high tide to low,” she said.

The clock has been called Aluna. It is a word from the Kogi indigenous people of Colombia.

“It means memory, possibility. It’s also being in tune with the planet’s rhythms and living in harmony with our planet,” said Williams.

According to Dr Usama Hasan, an astronomer, in this age of iPods and atomic clocks, there is a greater need than ever for an older way of measuring time.

“Aluna is a project which tries to connect us back to the cosmic cycle, with nature. I think that’s very important especially in the very technological age we live in,” said Hasan. (ANI)

Now, a smart home that can alert owner about a stove burner left on

London, Sep 3 (ANI): Ever thought that your home would tell if you have left a stove burner on after making your breakfast? Well, it is now possible, thanks to the new sensor-stuffed apartment created by researchers at Washington State University in Pullman.

The smart home, known as Casas, developed by Diane Cook and colleagues, can learn the ways of its inhabitants by observing their daily habits and how they use different appliances everyday.

The technology could be used in houses to support people with cognitive difficulties or dementia with their daily living needs, or to make things easier for healthy people.

For example, the apartment can recognise when a person is performing actions associated with making breakfast and can prompt them with audio and video signals to warm them of any anomaly like a stove left burning.

While Casas was developed to analyse the sensors’ output, Graduate student Parisa Rashidi has improved the system, so that it can learn a person’s habits without prior assumptions about what events or patterns to expect.

While previous smart homes used movie cameras to pre-define key activities before recognising them, the new system was successfully tested in a specially outfitted apartment with a single resident on campus.

It required around a month of training to accurately tease out the resident’s habits from the sea of sensor data, said Rashidi.

Once trained, Casas can identify patterns as complex as “at 6 am the kitchen light comes on, the coffee maker turns on, and the toaster turns on” without any prior knowledge of what to expect.

To maintain a resident’s sense of privacy Casas works without cameras, RFID chips or microphones.

Instead less “invasive” sensors that detect motion, temperature, light, humidity, water, door contact and the use of key items, such as opening a bottle of medication or switching on the toaster.

“We don’t want to give residents the feeling that Big Brother is watching them,” New Scientist quoted Rashidi as saying.

The researchers developed a number of data-mining algorithms to help make sense of the sensor output.

One algorithm uses a grid of motion sensors to map out how a person walks around the home, looking for daily “trajectories”, or routes through the house.

A second algorithm finds patterns in a sequence of events, such as learning to expect the resident to turn on a tap after turning on the oven.

And a third algorithm looks to correlate events it detects with the time of day to identify the pattern, for example, of when the person eats dinner.

Now the researchers are working on upgrades that allow the apartment to decipher the actions of multiple inhabitants and recognise subtle variations in commonly repeated tasks.

The study has been published in the journal IEEE Transactions on Systems Man and Cybernetics. (ANI)

New York, Aug 22 (ANI): Singer Barbra Streisand’s ex-boyfriend will soon have three recordings of her earliest performances auctioned.

Barry Dennen, who claims to have convinced her to become a singer, had made the tapes almost 50 years ago.

It includes the actress singing “A Taste of Honey” and “Two Brothers” in Dennen’s apartment, with him accompanying on guitar.

There’s also a Sept. 17, 1960, rehearsal at the Bon Soir nightclub, where Streisand sang “Keepin’ Out of Mischief Now,” “A Sleepin’ Bee,” “I Want To Be Bad,” “When Sunny Gets Blue,” “Lover Come Back to Me,” “Nobody’s Heart” and “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?”

He will now be selling it, with bids starting at 1 million dollars.

Big Ben ice sculpture being created in London

London, August 20 (ANI): Sculptors are creating Big Ben on ice as part of a reconstruction of the London skyline.

The sculpture, measuring 10m in length and 3m in height, is being crafted by some of the world’s top ice sculptors amongst five landmarks.

“This is the first time we have been asked to design and produce a project of this scale,” the Telegraph quoted sculptor Duncan Hamilton as saying.

“The challenge to present such unique large sculptures in five city centres, at the same time and on the same day is wonderful,” he added.

Each scaled-down replica, weighing up to a 3.5 tonnes, is estimated to take four men about five hours to assemble and create.

They are to be unveiled by the Smirnoff Co in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Liverpool and London on September 11. (ANI)

Peter Andre may reappear in ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get me our of here!’

London, Aug 19 (ANI): Peter Andre may make a comeback to reality show ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get me out of here’, where he first fell in love with his estranged wife Katie Price.

The singer could soon head to the Aussie camp to be part of the thrill.

“It’s all up in the air at the moment. But it’s very exciting. It’s going to be a ratings winner,” the Daily Star quoted a source as saying.

The insider added: “The public loves Peter and they’d love nothing more than to see him back in the jungle. He might even find a new love.”

However, top psychologist Jo Hemmings is afraid that the trip could make it hard for the ‘Mysterious Girl’ singer to get over the bitter split with his wife.

She said: “Peter obviously has a yearning to go back to where his happiness began. He is eager to take a journey back to the beginning, as he feels this will cast out the final demons of his volatile and troubled marriage. But it could be a serious error of judgment. He will encounter so many reminders of falling in love with Kate that it will dredge up all sorts of unwelcome memories that could find him slipping back into emotional fragility.”

She added: “If there are lessons to be learned from reality TV history, Pete should remember that when Jade Goody’s career was flagging, returning to the Big Brother house was one of the worst decisions she ever made.”

Andre had first participated in the show five years back. (ANI)

Dark energy may not actually exist

London, August 18 (ANI): A new research by scientists has claimed that dark energy – the mysterious substance thought to make up three-quarters of the universe – may not actually exist.

The concept of dark energy was created by cosmologists to fit Albert Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity into reality after modern space telescopes discovered that the Universe was not behaving as it should.

According to Einstein’s work, the speed at which the Universe is expanding following the Big Bang should be slower than it actually is and this unexplained anomaly threatened to turn the whole theory upside down.

In order to reconcile this problem, the concept of dark energy was invented.

But now, according to a report in the Telegraph, Blake Temple and Joel Smoller, mathematicians at the University of California and the University of Michigan, believe they have come up with a whole new set of calculations that allow for all the sums to add up without the need for this controversial substance.

The research could change the way astronomers view the composition of our Universe, as it may prove that dark energy doesn’t exist at all.

The Standard Model of Cosmology, which describes the evolution of the Universe, begins with the Big Bang.

Astronomers have recently observed that the galaxies are accelerating as they move away from each other, and cosmologists have sought to explain this unexpected acceleration by introducing the concept of dark energy, which permeates space, propels matter, and accounts for nearly 75 percent of the mass-energy in our Universe.

The new research is likely to be equally controversial as the work it purports to challenge especially as it relies on our galaxy being at the centre of the Universe – a concept that has been generally disregarded in modern science.

According to Dr Malcom Fairbairn, particle cosmologist at King’s College London, “Ever since the concept of dark energy was first mentioned, people have been trying to explain it or explain it away. It is a mystery and an inconvenience.”

“This is one attempt at it. Whether it is right only time will tell,” he said. (ANI)

Brangelina searching for luxury house in Big Apple

New York, July 13 (ANI): Globetrotting Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are apparently thinking of setting up base in New York, for reports have suggested that the celebrity couple have been secretly checking out plush properties in the Big Apple.

According to reports, the star couple have even seen the Apthorp-the century-old upper West Side landmark that’s undergoing a condo conversion.

Although the ‘Mr. And Mrs. Smith’ pair have always rented out properties during whenever they have stayed in the city, they now seems to be interested in the fortress-like luxury of Apthorp.

“The gated courtyard means they can get in and out of their car without being hassled by paparazzi. The building also has several other exits,” The New York Daily News quoted a source as saying.

It is believed that Pitt and Jolie are thinking about putting together three units in the building.

“I heard they’re ready to spend as much as 25 million dollars,” said a source.

It is believed that the couple is beguiled by the hand wrought period details of the Apthorp, which was built in 1908 by the Astor family.

Some apartments are as large as 13 rooms and boast 11-foot ceilings and 44-inch-wide hallways. (ANI)

Duncan James admits being a bisexual

London, July 12 (ANI): Boy band Blue’s Duncan James has come out of the closet to admit that he is a bisexual.

“I was living a secret life. I went through a process of asking what the f*** am I?Am I gay? Am I straight? Am I bi? That’s why I was so frightened about talking. Now, in my early 30s, I know who I am and I’m proud of who I am. I don’t want to hide anymore,” the News of the World quoted him as saying.

The news is expected to shock the pop star’s female fans all over the world.

However, it took a lot of guts for the star to open up about his sexuality.

He said: “I’d never talked to my mum about sex and relationships. It was quite a taboo subject because we came from a Catholic upbringing.

“One night towards the end of the trip, I knocked on my mum’s door before she went to bed. I was looking down and avoiding her eyes. I said, ‘I need to talk to you’.

“She said, ‘Oh my God, what’s wrong, are you all right?’

“I responded, ‘I need to tell you something. I’ve been in a relationship with a guy and I’m really confused about it. I haven’t been able to talk to anyone for a couple of years.’

“She hugged me and couldn’t believe it. She said, ‘I thought you were going to tell me you were dying or something. Hundreds of people have had things with guys as well as girls. I love you, that doesn’t matter to me.’

The singer then went on to disclose it to his band members who supported him.

He added: “I told Simon first. He went straight away, ‘Is that all you’re worried about? I love you man. That’s cool. You’re not alone. It doesn’t change anything for us.’

“I spoke to Lee next then Ant. They were really supportive too. After that I actually felt quite comfortable with myself.”

He had his first relationship with a person of the same sex in 2001, the year the band were celebrating their first three No1 hits – All Rise, Too Close and If You Come Back.

He said: “I’d never been intimate with a man. I’d been quite happy having girlfriends.

“But I met a guy. He was my friend at first but we took the friendship to the next level.

“Up until that point I’d never had those feelings towards a guy before. But this person came into my life and put a spanner in the works. I definitely loved him. It was my first experience like that.

Duncan still likes women, he added: “I can still look at women now and think they’re sexy.

I love being intimate with a woman, I love breasts. I do think girls can be a lot more emotional.”

James, who was looked at as a womanizer until now, has a four-year-old daughter, Tianie-Finne James with former girlfriend Claire Granger.

He has been to linked a string of women in the past including Geri Halliwell, Tara Palmer Tomkinson, Martine McCutcheon and ex-Big Brother winner Kate Lawler. (ANI)
