What You Don’t Know about Your Online Reputation Can Hurt You

Social networking, and the broader concept of online privacy, have been under some rather intense scrutiny over the past couple of weeks. The issues at Google–voracious indexer of all things Internet, and Facebook–the largest social network and number one most visited site (according to Google) have made many users more acutely aware of what information is available about them on the Internet. However, your online reputation is being used in ways you may not be aware of, and could cost you.

Users don’t necessarily need to be concerned, but should at least be aware of who they are connected with online, and what they say. No, Big Brother isn’t watching, but potential employers and lenders are.

Increasingly, your online reputation is becoming a deciding factor in whether you get that job, or get approved for that car loan. Businesses have online footprints as well, and the online reputation of the business could impact partner or vendor agreements, or affect the creditworthiness of the business.

Companies and lenders are turning to services like those offered by Rapleaf, a San Francisco-based company focused on social media monitoring. Rapleaf scours the Web to compile your status updates, Twitter “tweets”, the online organizations you join, the sites you link to, and the comments you post and convert it all into a consumer profile called a social graph.

The social graph reveals behavior patterns related to what you like, what you don’t like, what you want, what you don’t want, etc.. Rapleaf presents the service as a marketing tool–enabling companies to target marketing efforts more intelligently, and with more precision than base demographics like age, gender, or location.

At face value that seems like a reasonable use of your online footprint–at least to me. However, some employers or lenders are using information from services like Rapleaf for more invasive purposes. Using the Rapleaf social graph, or any other aggregate of an individual’s online presence, companies can dive deeper into your social networks and see who you’re connected to.

A bank considering you for a credit card can scan your social network and identify other users connected to you that are already customers of the bank. The bank can analyze the payment history and credit stability of those customers, and make assumptions about you based on them. The presumption is that birds of a feather flock together, so if you’re social network is filled with credit rejects, you are also probably a bad credit risk.

Who you know online, and what you don’t know about your online reputation may prevent you from getting a job or credit card. Even worse, sloppy online sleuthing or mistaken identity could lead to your rejection, and you may never even know why.

A friend–we’ll call him Greg–was hired by a company and moved his family across the country to accept the job. The company had conducted a background check on Greg prior to hiring him, but subsequently launched a more exhaustive background check about a month after Greg had started working for them.

One day, Greg was called in to see his manager and was told that his services would no longer be needed. He was asked to clear his desk and escorted from the building with no further explanation. His family hadn’t even finished unpacking from the cross-country move, and Greg was faced with the shock of unemployment.

Thankfully, after some pushing Greg was able to learn that the company had fired him because the subsequent background check had uncovered a criminal background and outstanding warrants the company was unaware of. Of course, Greg was also unaware of the criminal background and outstanding warrants because the company had uncovered information on the wrong “Greg”.

The company put the burden of proof on Greg to produce evidence that it was the wrong Greg, which Greg did and eventually got his job back. Others might not be so lucky, though.

When you don’t get the job, get turned down for a loan, or get rejected for a credit card, you may never really know if you were rebuffed on your own merits, or as a function of the crowd you choose to associate with online, or due to completely mistaken identity.

Rapleaf offers a service to discover your online footprint and get a view of what others might see on your social graph. Google offers a similar tool–the Google Privacy Dashboard–which presents an overview of the accounts and information you are connected with through Google.

Take advantage of tools like these to monitor your own online reputation and keep your online persona clean. What you don’t know can hurt you.

The great census divide

The Nationalist Congress Party is not in favour of a caste-based census, but has not made it an issue as it finds Big Brother Congress suddenly more accommodating towards the Yadav triumvirate — Sharad, Mulayam and Lalu — than its partners in the UPA. At the Cabinet meeting last week, senior NCP leader and Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel took the middle path, pointing out that the matter has reached such a point that the government would be criticised either way. The NCP camp is dismayed at the haste with which the Congress brought the onus on the government by promising to bring the issue in the Cabinet.

The Cabinet meeting witnessed some spirited opposition with Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports M S Gill leading from the front and terming it as a retrogressive step. Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal wanted the government to take a “rationalist” approach.

The biggest surprise, however, was Steel Minister Virbhadra Singh’s support for a caste census. He said that by promising to bring the issue in the Cabinet, the government had already committed itself to the cause

Relationship with BB babe Chanelle Hayes ‘just a bit of fun’: Jack Tweed

London, May 3 (ANI): Jack Tweed has apparently admitted to his friends that his relationship with Big Brother babe Chanelle Hayes is ‘just a bit of fun.’

His friends also revealed that Jack has no intentions of fathering 22-year-old Hayes’ unborn baby, reports The Daily Star.

The couple has been spotted several times but Jack recently successfully defended himself against the recent rape trial charged on him.

It is just a “friendship that he thinks could lead to sex,” a source said.

“Will he be a father to that kid? Get real. Jack certainly doesn”t consider Chanelle his girlfriend. It”s just a bit of fun for him,” the source added. (ANI)

Gary Lineker”s son George dating Big Brother 10 winner Sophie Reade?

London, Mar 31 (ANI): George Lineker, eldest son of Match Of The Day host Gary, has been spotted with Big Brother 10 winner and glamour model Sophie Reade.

George, 18, arrived at a Walkers Crisps party at Orchid nightclub in Piccadilly, with Gary, 49, and his 30-year-old new wife, underwear model Danielle Bux, on Monday night.

And when the elders left for home, George teamed up with the statuesque blonde to enjoy a spot of club-hopping together.

The pair headed for the upmarket Mahiki nightspot where he had celebrated his 18th birthday in October.

The couple were clearly at ease together, as they were spotted gazing into each other’s eyes and sharing private jokes before they left holding hands early yesterday.

With Sophie clinging to George for support, they hailed a black cab and sped off.

It is believed that the couple have been out several times since Sophie ended her romance with Big Brother housemate Kris Donnelly last summer.

However, a source denied that the pair are anything more than good friends.

“They’re just really good friends. They’ve known each other a couple of years and are very close,” the Daily Express quoted a source as saying of the couple. (ANI)

Airport guard used scanner to ogle colleague

A security worker at London’s Heathrow Airport has received a police warning and faces disciplinary action over claims he ogled a female colleague using a full-body scanner, officials said.

The 25-year-old worker made lewd comments after his colleague Jo Margetson, 29, mistakenly strayed into the scanner which can see through clothes to produce an image of the body, the Sun newspaper reported.

The case is believed to be the first of its kind since the full-body scanners were rushed into service at a number of British airports in the wake of an attempt by a suspected Muslim extremist to blow up a plane bound for Detroit on December 25.

They are now being rolled out at airports across the world.

Details of the incident at Heathrow’s Terminal 5 on March 10 emerged on the day lawmakers said concerns that the scanners were intrusive had been overblown.

Ms Margetson told the Sun she had been “traumatised” by what had happened and had informed police and her bosses at the airport’s operator, BAA.

“We treat any allegations of inappropriate behaviour or misuse of security equipment very seriously and these claims are being investigated thoroughly,” said a spokeswoman for BAA.

“If found to be substantiated, we will take appropriate action.”

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said officers had been informed of the allegation and “a first instance harassment warning has been issued to a 25-year-old man”.

Opponents of scanners argue they risk breaching a person’s right to privacy.

Britain’s Equality and Human Rights Commission has already said they might be breaking discrimination and privacy laws.

“For every official caught ogling like this, there are plenty more eyeing up law-abiding travellers,” Alex Deane, director of the Big Brother Watch campaign group, said.

“These expensive machines are totally disproportionate.”

The government says staff using the machines are properly supervised and would not be able to see the person being scanned. All images are deleted.

UK liberty groups outraged at transfer of sensitive data to new EU Gestapo

London, Mar. 26 (ANI): UK’s liberty groups have expressed outrage over the transfer of sensitive data on millions of Britons to the new EU Gestapo, Europol.

The new European intelligence agency can access personal information on anyone, including their political opinions and sexual preferences, if it suspects that they may be involved in any “preparatory act” to a criminal activity.

Critics have warned that the EU snoopers threaten Britons’ right to free speech.

“We have huge concerns that Europol appears to have been given powers to hold very sensitive information and to investigate matters that aren’t even crimes in this country. Any extension of police powers at any level needs to be properly debated and scrutinised,” the Daily Express quoted James Welch, legal director of campaign group Liberty, as saying.

“I am horrified. We thought Gordon Brown’s Big Brother state was bad enough but at least we are going to kick him out in May. These guys we cannot sack until we leave the EU,” Paul Nuttall, chairman of the UK Independence Party, said.

So far, Europol was a police office funded by various states to help tackle international organised crime.

However, it has been reborn as the official criminal intelligence-gathering arm of the EU and it will be centrally funded.

Among personal details that can be gathered and stored are “behavioural data” including “lifestyle and routine; movements; places frequented”, tax position and profiles of DNA and voice.

Where relevant, Europol will also be able to keep data on a person’s “political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs or trade union membership and data concerning health or sex life”.

The British Home Office, however, insisted: “Europol is now in a much stronger position to better support our fight against serious and organised crime and terrorism.” (ANI)

Boy George says he loves Alex Reid”s alter-ego Roxanne

London, March 22 (ANI): Pop star Boy George has expressed his liking for Katie Price’s husband Alex Reid.

The former Culture Club singer in fact fancies the cage fighter’s alter-ego Roxanne.

“I like Alex. He’s great. But I love the drag thing. I love Roxanne,” the Daily Star quoted him as saying on TV show Chatty Man.

George added that he was particularly impressed with Reid during his stint in reality show Big Brother.

He said: “There was one point where Vinnie Jones was being nasty and Alex went: ‘Do you want a cup of tea, mate?’

“I thought I need to be more like that. It’s a brilliant way to handle people. Like everyone else, I originally thought: ‘This guy’s probably an idiot.’

“But straight away I thought: ‘No, actually he’s a very sweet bloke.’ The right man won.”

Even George planned to enter the Big Brother house but was banned owing to a court order that put him on probation after a jail term for falsely imprisoning a rent boy.

However, he added: “I don’t think I could have handled it.” (ANI)

The hottie was awarded a prize of over 70,000 pounds.

Reade admitted to having a fling with housemate Kris but insisted that she didn’t have sex with him.

“I swear on my Chihuahua’s life, we never had sex,” the Sun quoted her as telling presenter Davina McCall.

She added: “Winning makes me feel really accepted. Because I get my boobs out for a living, people think I’m an airhead with no personality.”

Yorkshireman David Ramsden was voted third even though Robbie Williams backed him.

Ex-Mr Gay UK entrant Charlie Drummond came fourth. (ANI)

Now, a smart home that can alert owner about a stove burner left on

London, Sep 3 (ANI): Ever thought that your home would tell if you have left a stove burner on after making your breakfast? Well, it is now possible, thanks to the new sensor-stuffed apartment created by researchers at Washington State University in Pullman.

The smart home, known as Casas, developed by Diane Cook and colleagues, can learn the ways of its inhabitants by observing their daily habits and how they use different appliances everyday.

The technology could be used in houses to support people with cognitive difficulties or dementia with their daily living needs, or to make things easier for healthy people.

For example, the apartment can recognise when a person is performing actions associated with making breakfast and can prompt them with audio and video signals to warm them of any anomaly like a stove left burning.

While Casas was developed to analyse the sensors’ output, Graduate student Parisa Rashidi has improved the system, so that it can learn a person’s habits without prior assumptions about what events or patterns to expect.

While previous smart homes used movie cameras to pre-define key activities before recognising them, the new system was successfully tested in a specially outfitted apartment with a single resident on campus.

It required around a month of training to accurately tease out the resident’s habits from the sea of sensor data, said Rashidi.

Once trained, Casas can identify patterns as complex as “at 6 am the kitchen light comes on, the coffee maker turns on, and the toaster turns on” without any prior knowledge of what to expect.

To maintain a resident’s sense of privacy Casas works without cameras, RFID chips or microphones.

Instead less “invasive” sensors that detect motion, temperature, light, humidity, water, door contact and the use of key items, such as opening a bottle of medication or switching on the toaster.

“We don’t want to give residents the feeling that Big Brother is watching them,” New Scientist quoted Rashidi as saying.

The researchers developed a number of data-mining algorithms to help make sense of the sensor output.

One algorithm uses a grid of motion sensors to map out how a person walks around the home, looking for daily “trajectories”, or routes through the house.

A second algorithm finds patterns in a sequence of events, such as learning to expect the resident to turn on a tap after turning on the oven.

And a third algorithm looks to correlate events it detects with the time of day to identify the pattern, for example, of when the person eats dinner.

Now the researchers are working on upgrades that allow the apartment to decipher the actions of multiple inhabitants and recognise subtle variations in commonly repeated tasks.

The study has been published in the journal IEEE Transactions on Systems Man and Cybernetics. (ANI)

Big Brother to be scrapped by Channel 4 for low ratings

London, Aug 26 (ANI): Reality television show ‘Big Brother’ is all set to be scrapped by Channel 4 after this year’s poor ratings.

The decision was taken after it was seen that only two million viewers tuned in to the tenth series of the reality show, compared to eight million only a few years ago.

“The reality is people are bored with it. Even at Channel 4 the vibe among staff is that if you like Big Brother you’re not cool,” the Sun quoted a telly insider, who confirmed an official announcement will be made soon, as saying.

“If the people commissioning the show don’t think it’s cool, what hope is there?” the insider said.

One final series – the 11th – will be screened on C4 next year because of the channel’s 180million pounds deal with the show’s makers Endemol.

But after that, it will only go ahead if the production house can flog it to a rival channel.

Insiders now say that it is only just “washing its face”, and accuse the show of failing to win over the “Facebook generation” after being watered down to avoid controversy, following the Shilpa Shetty race row on the celebrity version.

“The truth is nobody’s talking about Big Brother any more,” the insider added. (ANI)

Renee Zellweger compares motherhood to “slavery”

London, Aug 22 (ANI): Actress Renee Zellweger is likely to have second thoughts on starting a family and having kids after a nightmarish babysitting session with her brother’s kids.

The 40-year-old single beauty said an evening with her nephew and niece drained her out completely.

The Daily Star quoted her as saying: “My brother has two children now, so I’ve been playing aunt Renee. They’re two and four. It’s chaos. Moms out there, kudos to you. The cool thing about being an aunt is like, I can leave. No offence to my big brother Drew, but that is slavery. I dare you to take a shower. You can’t do anything unless they let you. It’s a dictatorship. They’re little dictators in their crib.”

Now, Zellweger is unsure if she wants to be a full-time mum.

“Every now and then I’ll step up and say, ‘You know what, everybody sleep in, because you guys need some sleep and aunt Renee is going to take charge. I’ve got it, I’ve got it.’ I so idn’t have it,” she adds. (ANI)

‘BB bosses have kept racism under wraps to avoid another Goody scandal’

London, Aug 21 (ANI): Big Brother’s hottest girl Noirin Kelly claims TV bosses have kept the ongoing racism and bullying on the show under wraps to avoid another Jade Goody scandal.

Kelly, who left BB last month, says Channel 4 scrapped the 24-hour live feed to prevent audience from seeing the ugly stuff going on in the show.

The Daily Star quoted Kelly as saying: “People have said n****r – but the public would never know. They only see what Big Brother wants them to see.

“They have the freedom to do whatever they want. So many things have been covered up.”

Channel 4 bosses had been making all efforts to make this season of Big Brother the best ever but the revelations made by the Irish beauty may ruin their plans.

The hottie from Dublin said: “I used the word n****r speaking about myself – but the producers never said anything to me because I am black.

“But my boyfriend Isaac said it once about me as a joke and he was instantly dragged to the diary room.

“Channel 4 has become so PC that they are killing the show. Big Brother has become too safe.

“It’s like a soap opera rather than a reality show. In life there’s racism, there’s sexism and there’s conflict. Seeing how people deal with that is what makes for interesting TV.

“Fans want to see the housemates have rows and they want to see how they resolve them. They don’t want to see Big Brother butting in all the time and trying to play God.”

Kelly alleged that the 23-year-old Rodrigo Lopes was the biggest bully on the show.

“That boy is the biggest bitch and biggest bully in there,” she said.

“He is fav-oured in the way the show is edited.

“It’s supposed to be a reality show yet there’s nothing real,” she added.

However, a Channel 4 spokesman said: “The nightly highlights shows are a balanced and fair representation of events in the house and the viewers choose the winner by public vote.” (ANI)

Shilpa Shetty to launch healthy Indian food range to honour Jade Goody

London, Aug 20 (ANI): Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty is set to launch her own healthy Indian food range as a tribute to late Jade Goody, according to reports.

The 34-year-old actress is to pay tribute to her Big Brother co-participant by launching her own brand of poppadoms.

Jade was accused of being racist after she called the star “Shilpa Poppa-dom”.

Shilpa’s chicken curry, which divided the house with accusations of under-cooked meat and excessive use of onions, is also expected to be included in the menu.

“Shilpa thinks Jade will have a little chuckle in heaven about the poppadoms,” the Daily Star quoted a source as saying.

“She has been inundated with requests for her curry recipe and one day she just thought: ‘Why don’t I just create my own range?’

“One of Shilpa’s passions in life is healthy living so she wanted to incorporate that into her dishes,” the source added. (ANI)

Peter Andre may reappear in ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get me our of here!’

London, Aug 19 (ANI): Peter Andre may make a comeback to reality show ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get me out of here’, where he first fell in love with his estranged wife Katie Price.

The singer could soon head to the Aussie camp to be part of the thrill.

“It’s all up in the air at the moment. But it’s very exciting. It’s going to be a ratings winner,” the Daily Star quoted a source as saying.

The insider added: “The public loves Peter and they’d love nothing more than to see him back in the jungle. He might even find a new love.”

However, top psychologist Jo Hemmings is afraid that the trip could make it hard for the ‘Mysterious Girl’ singer to get over the bitter split with his wife.

She said: “Peter obviously has a yearning to go back to where his happiness began. He is eager to take a journey back to the beginning, as he feels this will cast out the final demons of his volatile and troubled marriage. But it could be a serious error of judgment. He will encounter so many reminders of falling in love with Kate that it will dredge up all sorts of unwelcome memories that could find him slipping back into emotional fragility.”

She added: “If there are lessons to be learned from reality TV history, Pete should remember that when Jade Goody’s career was flagging, returning to the Big Brother house was one of the worst decisions she ever made.”

Andre had first participated in the show five years back. (ANI)

Newly discovered planet victim of game of ‘planetary billiards’

London, August 13 (ANI): A team of scientists has found a new planet which appears to have been the victim of a game of planetary billiards, flung into its unusual orbit by a close encounter with a “big brother” planet.

The planet, named WASP-17, and orbiting a star 1000 light years away, was found by the UK’s WASP project in collaboration with Geneva Observatory.

Since planets form out of the same swirling gas cloud that creates a star, they are expected to orbit in the same direction that the star spins.

Graduate students David Anderson, of Keele University, and Amaury Triaud, of Geneva Observatory, were surprised to find that WASP-17 is orbiting the wrong way, making it the first planet known to have a “retrograde” orbit.

The likely explanation is that WASP-17 was involved in a near collision with another planet early in its history.

WASP-17 appears to have been the victim of a game of planetary billiards, flung into its unusual orbit by a close encounter with a “big brother” planet.

According to Professor Coel Hellier, of Keele University, “Shakespeare said that two planets could no more occupy the same orbit than two kings could rule England; WASP-17 shows that he was right.”

“A near collision during the early, violent stage of this planetary system could well have caused a gravitational slingshot, flinging WASP-17 into its backwards orbit,” Anderson said.

The first sign that WASP-17 was unusual was its large size. Though it is only half the mass of Jupiter it is bloated to nearly twice Jupiter’s size, making it the largest planet known.

Astronomers have long wondered why some extra-solar planets are far bigger than expected, and WASP-17 points to the explanation.

Scattered into a highly elliptical, retrograde orbit, it would have been subjected to intense tides.

Tidal compression and stretching would have heated the gas-giant planet to its current, hugely bloated extent.

“This planet is only as dense as expanded polystyrene, seventy times less dense than the planet we’re standing on,” said Professor Hellier.

According to Professor Keith Mason, Chief Executive of the Science and Technology Facilities Council, which funded the research, “This is a fascinating new find and another triumph for the WASP team. Not only are they locating these far flung and mysterious planets but revealing more about how planetary systems, such as our own Solar System, formed and evolved.” (ANI)

After Shilpa, another Indian contestant racially bullied in Big Brother

London, Jul 10 (ANI): Reality television show ‘Big Brother’ is in hot water once again, as watchdog Ofcom has received almost 300 complaints that Marcus Akin racially bullied Indian contender Sree Dasari.

Ofcom has said that it would be looking into viewers’ concerns about the 35-year-old window fitter imitating former housemate Sree’s Indian accent.

The complaints were mostly about a row between Marcus and Sree, in which Akin, who threatened 25-year-old Sree, received a telling off from Big Brother and a formal warning.

Viewers also complained about a separate incident earlier in the day, when Marcus mimicked Sree’s accent while completing the shopping list.

“Big Brother intervened and took immediate and appropriate action relating to the argument between Sree and Marcus,” the Sun quoted a spokesman for the show as saying.

“Marcus received a formal warning following his use of threatening language during his argument with Sree.

“Threatening language and behaviour is not acceptable in the Big Brother house.

“Big Brother monitors the welfare, language and behaviour of housemates at all times and will continue to monitor this situation,” he added. (ANI)
