Obama Orders Greener Commutes for Federal Workers

U.S. President Barack Obama ordered the federal government to promote greener employee commuting habits, reduced business travel and other measures to scale back indirect greenhouse gas emissions by 13 percent by 2020.

The indirect emissions reduction target goes beyond what the President previously committed for direct sources: a 28 percent reduction by 2020, based on 2008 levels. Combined, the reduction in emissions would be equivalent to the 101 million metric tons of carbon dioxide.

The U.S. government spent $24.5 billion on fuel and energy in 2008.

“Every year, the Federal Government consumes more energy than any other single organization or company in the United States,” President Obama said in a statement Wednesday. “That energy goes towards lighting and heating government buildings, fueling vehicles and powering federal projects across the country and around the world. The government has a responsibility to use that energy wisely, to reduce consumption, improve efficiency, use renewable energy, like wind and solar, and cut costs.”

Expanding bicycle commuting and using more renewable energy sources are some of the initiatives the government is adding to each agency’s annual sustainability plan. The Washington Post reported the government will also lower indirect emissions by expanding recycling programs and locating future offices near mass transit systems.

Under a House bill passed last week, agencies would appoint telework managers to develop policies that promote teleworking, which, in addition to avoided emissions, could save the government millions of dollars in lost productivity during extreme weather.

TaiSPO Stars: Riding the e-bike Towards a Brighter Future

TAIPEI, Taiwan–(Business Wire)–
Joy Ride Tech Co., Ltd. has created an exciting range of green devices for
travel and fun by land, water and air.

In recent years, the company, which has specialized in developing high-quality
electric vehicles since its establishment in 2002, has made huge breakthroughs
in the development of environmentally friendly transportation devices,
incorporating electric engines with energy-saving designs.

For land, Joy Ride has designed the e-bike, folding e-bike, e-scooter, e-go
kart, and e-ATV vehicles. For water, the company has created the e-boat,
e-surfboard, e-rubber dinghy, and e-motor; whilst those wishing to take to the
skies can choose Joy Ride’s e-paragliding or e-delta wings.

Recently the company successfully applied for a U.S. patent for the design of
its e-surfboard, which boasts a maximum speed of 35 km per hour, utilizing a
water-turbine as a drive motor.

This innovative surfboard is not only perfect for water-sports enthusiasts, but
its environmentally friendly design and streamlined shape ensures that the
device creates no noise or pollution. Surfers can enjoy a brand new water sports
experience, whilst Joy Ride’s specialized technology ensures catching a wave
will not be a problem. The e-surfboard should be able to operate for up to 20
minutes when fully charged.

Another important aspect of Joy Ride’s thoughtful design is that e-bike riders
can choose between full electric-powered or assisted electric-powered riding.

In an age in which many people are choosing to ride a bicycle rather than take
the car to save energy and reduce carbon emissions, there is no doubt that Joy
Ride’s utility e-products are a smart choice for today’s traveler.

Bomb attack kills Afghan farmers

At least 13 people have been killed and dozens injured by a bomb blast in southern Afghanistan.

The bomb exploded in a crowded marketplace in the village of Babaji in Helmand province in the country’s south.

Many of the dead and injured were farmers queuing up for free seeds handed out by local government officials.

Police say the improvised explosive device was strapped to a bicycle and detonated by remote control.

Helmand has been the site of a major NATO-led operation against the Taliban.

The chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, visited the province yesterday to hold talks with Afghan military and civilian leaders.

Coalition troops are preparing for the next offensive in neighbouring Kandahar.

Council puts brakes on bike hire scheme

The Gold Coast City Council is voting against a foreshore bicycle hire scheme strongly supported by Mayor Ron Clarke.

Councillor Clarke says he is disappointed at the decision after fighting for the scheme for 12 months.

He says he believes the system would have been another tourist attraction.

“We get almost 6six million day visitors each year,” Cr Clarke said.

“If you divide that into public holidays that’s 48,000 every public holiday including weekends down here on the coast.

“Most of [the visitors are] coming into the coastal areas, the foreshore and the beaches and this is an added attraction for them.”

Dog attacks 90yo bike rider

A 90-year-old man is in a stable condition after he fell off his bicycle while being attacked by a dog at Thomastown in Melbourne’s north.

The man was bitten on the thigh by a neighbour’s dog and then suffered head injuries when he fell off his bike.

“As a result of the attack, he’s actually been thrown off his bike, hitting his head on the ground,” ambulance officer Ziad Nehme said.

“So he suffered a mild head injury as well as some bite wounds to his left thigh.”

The man was taken to the Northern Hospital for treatment.

“The dog was still at the scene at the time so everyone was a bit cautious with regards to getting him in to the ambulance,” Mr Nehme said.

“I think he’ll think twice before he jumps on the bicycle.”

Barack Obama’s helmetless bike ride sparks controversy

Washington, Aug 29 (ANI): US President Barack Obama has sparked a controversy after being pictured helmetless during a bike ride on Martha’s Vineyard.

The move, which took place on August 27, has been seen as a bad example by most.

“Yes, I know, President Obama is on a vacation, riding a bike, at a slow cadence, so what if he is not wearing a helmet, right?” Politico.com quoted Martha Castro, a California doctor, as having written on her website.

While Josh Loposer, wrote on Babble.com, a website for parents, “Truly despicable isn’t it? What kind of example is he setting for the nation’s youth?”

“Most bike accidents just happen. Bicycles up and turn over by themselves, and head injuries are a possible consequence of that. … It would be great if the president set an example,” David Mozer, director of the International Bicycle Fund, told the New York Daily News.

With all the attention the incident was receiving, the White House decided on issuing an explanation.

“I know that he generally does wear a helmet when he rides a bicycle. He supports the wearing of bicycle helmets,” White House spokesman Bill Burton said. (ANI)

Jolie’s bicycle gifts leave Namibian kids thrilled

Washington, August 20 (ANI): Angelina Jolie is apparently no less than a saint for the Namibian children she helped by donating the profits from her family photos of baby Shiloh in 2006.

The kids helped by her are thanking her for distributing the four million dollars she had made from showing off Shilow, who was born in Namibia, to local schools.

Children attending the Okanimekwa School just can’t thank her enough because the estimated 10,000 dollars their school received in donation helped buy them bicycles.

“She’s (Jolie) a very special person, and we’ll never forget her. She must be a holy person,” Contactmusic quoted teenager Emiliana Shikongo as saying in a new Life and Style magazine expose.

And schoolpal Andreas Kristofelius added: “I think Angelina Jolie must be a saint.”

The report further revealed that the school bought 75 bicycles to help struggling pupils, and Shikongo was among those to reap the benefits of the gift.

Telling that her new mode of transport has shaved 90 minutes off her journey to school, she said that she no longer left at 5am and returned after dark.

“Now I can stay at school until 4 or 5pm to finish my homework and I still get home before dark. Now my teachers and parents are happy with my performance,” she said.

Kristofelius, 17, added: “I used to stay late at school, then walk home to collect firewood to make light so I could finish my homework (because) there is no electricity… Now, with the bicycle, I get to school early, and I’m already working when my teacher arrives. And I can stay later and finish all my homework because it doesn’t take me long to ride home.” (ANI)

‘Intelligent’bicycle of the future is theft proof, self-inflates tires

London, Aug 13 (ANI): A design that makes bikes as “intelligent” as computers has been unveiled by British Olympic cyclist Chris Boardman.

Thanks to the revolutionary system, the bike can never be stolen and has puncture-proof tyres, and it could be in everyday use by 2029.

Its system has an “unbreakable” locking device which allows only the owner to open it via fingerprint recognition. Other features include puncture-proof self-inflating tyres, a mini computer that counts calories as the pedals turn, a spokeless, lightweight carbon fibre frame and solar-rechargeable lights, reports The Telegraph.

A battery-assisted motor, which is run by solar panels, takes over the pedalling after a long day and music accompanies the ride.

The bike could be created were a company willing to produce it, insists Boardman, as “everything in it already exists”.

“It’s simply a question of pulling it all together. If there was a budget behind it, it could be ready in two years,” he said.

According to Boardman, it may take up to 20 years for people to become comfortable with the concept.

“People like different, but if it’s too different it’s risky,” he said. (ANI)

Army soldier embarks on a cycle expedition

Bangalore, July 2 (ANI): Undeterred by handicaps, a former Indian Army soldier, Probhojit Singh embarked on a bicycle tour across the country to spread the message of peace and harmony.

Singh,41, once a soldier of Jammu Kashmir Rifles, had to leave his battalion in 1989 when he met with a train accident and lost his left arm and toe of his right foot. But he refused to live in a state of helplessness, and decided to do something different.

He embarked on a bicycle tour across India.

Starting his journey from Ambala Cant in Haryana on January 19, 2009 he has since visited across 18 states, covering almost 9646 kilometers.

Through his tour, Singh wants to spread the message of peace and harmony belief in oneself.

“I want to spread the message of peace and harmony, but that takes a second priority, as the message of overcoming all odds forms the first priority of my tour. I want to send across a message to the people that when I being physically challenged can strive to embark on such a tour, then anybody can overcome their impediments to achieve something in life,” he said.

He rests at the local police stations and gets support from army regiments wherever he goes. The Indian army officers believe that Singh represents the spirit of the army, of never giving up.

“He truly reflects the indomitable spirit of the Indian soldier. And we are proud of him. He has already completed 9000 kilometres of the circuit and is on the road for almost 98 days or so,” said Brigadier R.N. Mittal commandant Madras Engineering Group, Bangalore.

Moving through the traffic in cities and towns across the country, Singh displays an undying spirit characteristic of the Indian Army.

He hopes that his endeavor would inspire many to maintain peace and harmony in the country. By Jaipal Sharma(ANI)

The ultimate ‘yummy mummy’ buggy that turns into a bike!

London, May 15 (ANI): Mums and dads can now peddle their way to the parks or shops along with their kids, courtesy the pushchair that converts into a child-carrying bicycle in just 20 seconds.

The three-wheeled Taga – described by makers as the ultimate ‘yummy mummy accessory’ is capable of carrying youngsters up to six years of age.

Children are carried in forward-facing seats between the handlebars of the bike and are secured by a five-point harness.

It saves on costly petrol and parking charges. It is also environmentally friendly because it is carbon emission free.

It contains head cushion that offers children added protection and a fully-sealed chain guard ensures that no clothes or body parts can get trapped.

The bike can be easily disassembled and fitted with a wide variety of accessories including a shopping basket or rain hood.

Taga is available in red, green, orange or light-blue. It has been developed over the last four years by an international team of designers and engineers.

Taga general manager Hagai Barak insists that the pushchair-bicycle, which has just gone on sale in the UK, turned a standard journey into an adventure.

“Taga is what all busy city living, environmentally conscious parents have been waiting for,” the Telegraph quoted a Barak as saying.

“Navigating any town or city with small children can be challenging, not to mention time consuming, costly and harmful to the environment if you must go everywhere by car.

“Taga has been specifically designed to allow parents and children to travel together more intimately and easily, turning a typical urban journey into an adventure,” Barak added. (ANI)

Italy’s elegant Forte dei Marmi still lures the jet set

Forte dei Marmi – At the turn of the century, the Tuscan coastal town of Forte dei Marmi became hugely popular with artists, aristocrats and intellectuals from all over Europe.

Nowadays, the “beautiful people” still flock here to spend their holidays among the pine trees. In downtown Forte dei Marmi, the fashionable CafĂ© Versilia on the Piazza Garibaldi was a popular haunt for famous cultural names such as English writer Aldous Huxley, Italian poet Gabriele d’Annunzio or German author Thomas Mann. The latter allegedly based the character of the sorcerer, Cipolla, in his 1929 novella Mario and Magician on someone he met on the premises.

The tranquil resort on the attractive Versilia coast continues to lure an immaculately-clad jet set and remains a byword for elegance. Guests sip a glass of prosecco under the linen sunshades which line the far-reaching golden sands.

The beach bars are abuzz in the summer months, competing for attention alongside an extensive range of water sport activities and an ambitious cultural programme. The main beach stretches five kilometres between the rivulets of Fiumetto in the south and Cinquale to the north.

The name Forte dei Marmi translates as The Fortress of the Marble and the first settlers in this swampy area were dealers in the glossy white rock whose use in architecture goes back to classical Greek times.

In the 16th century, a certain Michelangelo Buonarotti, the Renaissance all-round genius commonly known only by his first name, was commissioned by Pope Leopold X. to draw up plans for the road to connect the marble quarries at Massa and Carrara in Apennine Mountains with the coast.

The artist set to work and both the road and a 300-metre along the pier were built so that the prized stone could be hauled aboard sailing ships. Today both locals and tourists gather at the spot to admire the spectacular sunsets.

A century later, the resort began to attract fishermen, farmers and quarry workers and it was in 1788 under the aegis of Grand Duke Leopold I that the town acquired its most notable landmark, the red brick fort in the main square “Il Fortino.”

Tourism in Forte dei Marmi only began to boom after World War II when wealthy Italian industrialists chose it as a summer retreat. Today the “Fortino” is home to the Museum for Satire and Caricature and visitors can admire exhibits dating back to antiquity as well as contemporary works. For those who want more there is even a specialised multimedia archive on the topic.

This town of around 8,500 residents – known to its admirers as “Forte” – offers an unusually rich tableau of cultural activities. There are numerous galleries and the town is a useful springboard for visits throughout Tuscany. Lucca, Florenz and Pisa are only a short ride away by local train.

There are plenty of chic cafes to visit in the central Forti and the town offers a wide range of hotel accommodation to suit all budgets. Four-star hotels line the promenade behind a fringe of oleander and palm trees while the more reasonably-priced establishments are generally found in the centre or on side streets.

The nearby Apennines offers all manner of sporting pursuits such as hiking and climbing tours while at the seaside windsurfers and kite surfers will find plenty to keep them occupied. A fine way of seeing Forti is from the saddle of a bicycle since in contrast to most places in Italy, the town has an extensive network of cycle paths. (dpa)

Assam self-help group generates employment for rural women

Sodial (Jorhat), Apr 28 (ANI): A self-help group (SHG) that mooted a weaving unit in Assam has facilitated a large number of women economically self sufficient by generating employment for them.his self-help group named ‘Bhogdoi’ and based at Sodial village in Jorhat region was the brainchild of Arunima Kachari in 2001.

Ever since its inception, Arunima and her other nine associates have nurtured ‘Bhogdoi’ with utmost dedication.

They started their business with just ten workers by installing only ten looms, but within a period of five years, the number of looms has increased to 45. Now after eight years, they have more than 100 weavers working wonders on 85 looms.

Hundreds of women from this village have benefited from ‘Bhogdoi’.

“I took the initiative of setting up a weaving centre for the womenfolk of my village. Then I started imparting training in weaving to unemployed women of my village. Later, we formed the ‘Bhogdoi’ self-help group. Many have benefited from this weaving business,” Kachari.

“We hardly asked for any assistance from the government. We collected money on our own and started the unit. I never thought we would reach this far. Later, in 2002, we started exhibiting our products. At these exhibitions, we sell our traditional attires like Tongali (waist cloth), Muga (handloom silk), Mekhela Sador (bridal trousseau), gamocha (towel also used to tie around the head),” Kachari added.

The enterprising Arunima motivated scores of girls and even housewives to be a part of the Bhogdoi where she taught them the rudiments of spinning and weaving.

“I am a regular worker in this self-help group. I joined the training after which I was also given a job in this unit. Now, I can send my children to a good school and can provide them good food,” said Dipali Saikia, member-worker.

Since, the products made by this SHG are of high quality and fine finishing, the demand is very high within the district and adjoining areas.

Right from day-one, ‘Bhogdoi ‘has relied only on traditional modes. The spinning wheels are made of bicycle wheel while the looms are bamboo or cane and wood-based.

‘Bhogdoi’ SHG has participated in various handloom exhibitions across the country and bagged a couple of awards conferred by the Government of Assam and also the Central Government.

There are more than 85,000 SHGs functioning in Assam, playing the role of a vital catalyst in the overall socio-economic scenario.

The main spheres in which these SHGs are active happen to be agriculture, handloom, poultry and dairy farming, food processing units in the cottage industry sector, bee keeping, cane and bamboo craft among others.

Jorhat district itself boasts of at least 7000 SHGs.

Interestingly, there are quite a few number of high school students who are members of Bhogdoi and they have experienced ‘earn while you learn’. By Apem (ANI)

Witnesses: Suicide bomber kills five Iraqi city of Baquba

Baquba, Iraq – A suicide bomber killed two US soldiers, an Iraqi interpreter, and two bystanders in the Iraqi city of Baquba on Tuesday, witnesses said.

Eleven people were also wounded when a man detonated explosives strapped to his body near the offices of the local government in Baquba, 60 kilometres north of Baghdad, witnesses told the German News Agency, dpa.

Baquba, the capital of Iraq’s ethnically divided province of Diyala, was formerly the site of intense fighting insurgents and US forces. Violence there has declined in recent years, but on March 30, three day-workers were killed and eight others were injured when a man detonated a bomb strapped to his bicycle. (dpa)

Man admits to car attack and rape of child cyclist

Minden, Germany – German police were holding a motorist Wednesday who admitted that he deliberately collided with a girl cyclist, 13, and raped her while she was suffering from concussion.

The 30-year-old father of five had initially claimed the crash on Monday near the northern town of Minden was an accident, but conceded after a long interrogation that he had been looking for a child to attack. The sexual attack took place inside his car.

Police said the collision caused leg and arm injuries and concussion. “She can’t remember what happened,” a police spokesman said.

Area police mounted a search for the girl after her parents had reported her missing.

Police said the suspect, who was unemployed and had no vocational training, had no previous criminal record.(dpa)

Taiwan bike maker Giant to open bicycle travel agency

Taipei – Taiwan bicycle manufacturer Giant Inc plans to launch a travel agency to promote bike tourism , a newspaper reported Tuesday. Giant has applied to the Transport Ministry to operate a Class-A travel agency and hopes to launch the new venture in May, the Taipei Times quoted Giant general manager John Ho as saying.

Ho said the new travel agency was initially expected to bring in more than 100 million Taiwan dollars (nearly 3 million US) in annual revenue, but Giant’s goal is not making money but to promote bike riding as a way of life.

Giant plans to sign an agreement with Taiwan’s largest airline, the China Airlines, which will offer discount bicycle shipping services to capture new business opportunities.

Aside from teaming with China Airlines, Giant said it would continue to reinforce its collaboration with Lion Travel Service Co. Giant is now in charge of Lion Travel Service’s bicycle tour programmes.

Giant is eying business opportunities brought by an increasing number of tourists who travel across the Taiwan Strait via a third destination and plans to offer two-day, one-night bike tours between Kinmen and Xiamen in the second half of 2009, the Taipei Times said.

Kinmen is a Taiwan-held islet a few kilometres off China’s south- east coast.

Fueled by the growing popularity of cycling, Giant sold 390,000 bicycles last year in Taiwan, with about 4 billion Taiwan dollars (118 million US dollars) in sales.

The company’s 2008 sales surged 140 per cent from 2007, when Giant sold 230,000 bicycles and reported sales of 1.65 billion Taiwan dollars (48 million US dollars).

According to the Taipei Times, Giant expects domestic sales to drop to about 350,000 units in 2009 due to the economic downturn. (dpa)

Four blasts in Assam kill 8 before PM visit

Four bomb blasts killed eight people in Assam on Monday, a day before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was due to visit the region, police said.

Police said the state’s main separatist group, the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), was behind the attacks.

Singh’s visit to the state would go ahead as scheduled amid tight security, a spokesman for the ruling Congress party said.

The first bomb exploded in a crowded parking area in front of a restaurant in Guwahati, killing seven on the 30th anniversary of the founding of ULFA, police said.

“Seven people have died in the blast,” P.C. Saloi, a senior police officer in the city, told Reuters by phone.

At least 32 people were injured and several of them are in a critical condition. The death toll is likely to rise further, officials said. Several vehicles and buildings caught fire after the blast.

A second bomb went off two hours later opposite a hospital in the town of Dhekiajuli, 150 km north of Guwahati. Police said the device was planted on a bicycle. Six people were injured, three of them critically.

The third blast occurred at Jengpha, in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, but no one was injured.

Rebels also threw grenades at a police station at Mankachar town in Dhubri district, near the border with neighbouring Bangladesh, killing one and wounding five people.

Accusing the police of not providing adequate security, hundreds of angry protesters blocked Guwahati’s main street, shouting slogans and clashing with the police.

Political parties have started campaigning in the state ahead of an April-May general election.

Last week a bomb blast killed one person in Guwahati, close to where Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee had been due to address an election rally. The rally was subsequently cancelled.

The ULFA is among more than two dozen armed groups in India’s northeast which are either fighting for an independent homeland or more political autonomy.

They accuse New Delhi of plundering the region’s mineral and forest resources, neglecting the local economy and giving them back nothing in return.

Duffy vows never to endorse another product

Washington, Mar 28 (ANI): Welsh singer-songwriter Duffy has vowed that she will never endorse another product again, after her TV commercial for Diet Coke was criticised by U.K. campaigners over road safety fears.

The singer was criticised for the promo by officials at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, after it debuted last month.

And now the star has pledged not to market any other brands, and to focus solely on her music instead.

“I have only got 100 per cent to give and all of that goes towards being creative, so I can’t really open the doors to all the other things,” she said.

“I have so many desires creatively, but I have to tread carefully that I also don’t sell myself out personally.

“What you see with me is what you get. I just put my whole energy into the creative side,” she added. (ANI)
