BJP to discuss its election strategy for Bihar

Patna (Bihar), June 11 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will hold a two-day National Executive meeting beginning on Saturday in Patna to discuss its election strategy for Bihar.

The party is expected to launch its campaign in the State, where it is a major partner in the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) Government.

This will also be a test for BJP President Nitin Gadkari, as this will be the party”s first electoral challenge after he took over the reigns.

The BJP is expected to go all out against the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre for its alleged step motherly treatment towards non-Congress states and highlight its failures.

The failure of the Central Government to control rising prices and Naxalism would also figure in the resolutions.

“The top BJP leadership will minutely scrutinise the UPA Government”s performance in reference to its handling of terrorism and economy, Naxalite insurgency and the step motherly treatment meted to non-Congress, non-UPA governments in the states,” said BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad.

A ”Rashtriya Swabhiman” (national pride) rally will be held at the conclusion of the meet, which will be addressed by top party leaders signalling the launch of the Bihar campaign.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is expected to be a prominent speaker in the rally, as this will be his first visit to Bihar after becoming Chief Minister in October 2001.

Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states will be attending the National Executive meeting, during which the party is expected to focus on the achievements of the Janata Dal-United Government led by Nitish Kumar in Bihar, which has logged 11 percent growth rate in the last five years. (ANI)

I prefer Shastri to Nehru: Modi

Mumbai, June 6 — Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday criticised India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru saying his fondness for children or celebrating his birthday – November 14 – as Children’s Day has not achieved anything. “What has Children’s Day done for kids who are poor and are starving?” Modi asked while delivering the keynote address at the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) two-day conclave at Uttan on Saturday.

“Let me contrast this with Lal Bahadur Shastri. Shastri, unlike Nehru, was not a charismatic leader and rarely does anyone remember him.

But he coined the slogan Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, which electrified our army jawans and farmers equally,” Modi said. The party, at the conclave on good governance, has projected Modi as an ideal chief minister.

BJP president Nitin Gadkari tried to get the fractured party together and made an appeal for team spirit and “development-oriented politics” saying that the BJP represented a different political culture in India. The conclave, Suraj Sankalp, is being seen as Gadkari’s attempt to make good governance BJP’s unique selling proposition.

He has used Gujarat, which has done well under Modi, as an example of this. Modi, in his address, said transparency was important for good governance.

“Good governance goes beyond files. Real problems are not in government files and they should be sought in life and not in ivory towers or air-conditioned meeting rooms,” he said.

The party has been plagued with infighting between top leaders of the party since the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. The conference will focus on reviewing noteworthy and innovative welfare or development initiatives.

Representatives from six BJP-ruled states, including chief ministers and 65 junior ministers, are attending the conclave at the party’s political training institute at Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini at Uttan near Bhayander. “We have to shun the Congress culture of greetings and salutations and think about the nation first, then the party and then about oneself,” Gadkari said.

BJP fields Jethmalani for Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan

New Delhi, June 6 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sunday decided to field former union minister Ram Jethmalani from Rajasthan and former MP Ajay Maru from Jharkhand in the Rajya Sabha elections.

A BJP statement said that party president Nitin Gadkari had nominated Jethmalani as the candidate for the second seat in Rajasthan and Maru as its nominee from Jharkhand for the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha.

The party has already declared V.P. Singh as its candidate from Rajasthan.

Gadkari’s remarks on discipline evoke discussion at BJP meet

Uttan (Maharashtra), June 6 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party president Nitin Gadkari’s blunt remarks on party discipline at the two-day party conclave here became a topic of discussion Sunday – the concluding day of the event.

The party chief’s observations on ego clashes among different party workers and leaders – whom he did not name – led to intense speculation over who he was referring to or even targeting.

‘I once thought very highly of some party leaders, but after becoming BJP president, I realised that some of them were short-sighted,’ Gadkari said Saturday at the ‘National Convention on Good Governance’.

He also urged all party workers and leaders to work with good team spirit under the leadership of the chief ministers and deputy chief ministers of states where the party was in power and avoid ego clashes. He also expressed concern over bickering in the party at various levels.

Surprisingly, the chief ministers present on the occasion were hardly seen interacting with each other though the convention was all about sharing their own experiences in good governance, including party manifesto agendas in governance and inspiring other state heads to learn from their examples.

Gadkari also emphasised the spirit of nationalism which defined its political character and shunned sycophancy in any form – be it large garlands, erecting huge hoardings or touching the feet of leaders – as part of Congress ‘traditions’.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj would deliver the concluding remarks at the end of the meet as senior leader L.K. Advani was indisposed and skipped the convention. BJP’s deputy leader in Lok Sabha Gopinath Munde was also absent from the crucial meet.

The chief ministers of the BJP-ruled Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka were present at the convention. Chhattisgarh’s Raman Singh was absent owing to his father’s death a day before the meet.

Besides deputy chief ministers of two states and party presidents of eight states, 73 ministers were also present at the meet — which was a closed-door affair — conducted in the sylvan surroundings of Uttan, a village on the Arabian Sea coast, around 40 km north of Mumbai.

Advani skips party convention

Uttan (Maharashtra), June 6 (IANS) Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Sunday skipped the ongoing two-day party convention being held here due to ill health, a party official said.

Advani was scheduled to make a concluding speech Sunday afternoon but his trip was postponed at the last minute, the official told IANS.

In his place, opposition leader in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj was to make the concluding remarks on the charter of ‘National Convention on Good Governance’.

The convention has been a closed-door affair, conducted in the sylvan surroundings of Uttan, a village on the Arabian Sea coast, around 40 km north of Mumbai.

The morning session Sunday was addressed by senior party leaders M. Venkaiah Naidu and Ananth Kumar, among others.

A total 83 delegates were invited for what is billed as the ‘first of its kind convention involving so many state leaders on the vital issue of good governance’.

Besides party president Nitin Gadkari, who was present on the opening Saturday, the convention was attended by five chief ministers of BJP-ruled states. However, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Kumar could not make it as he lost his father a day before the event.

Two deputy chief ministers, including Sushilkumar Modi from Bihar and 73 ministers, besides the party chiefs of eight states also marked their attendance.

This is the first major convention of the BJP being held in Maharashtra after Gadkari, who hails from Nagpur, took over as party chief last year.

Pawar should resign immediately: BJP

New Delhi, June 4 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday accused former BCCI President and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar of misrepresenting facts on IPL bidding and demanded that he should resign immediately.

Addressing mediapersons here, Party spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said: “Sharad Pawar has mismanaged the food inflation as well as the cricket too, and he should step down from the post.

He said that City Corporation”s MD had bid for the IPL Pune team, was a false claim by Pawar, and added that he should answer that why he mislead the country by giving wrong information.

He further demanded for probe in the IPL Pune”s bidding process.

A newspaper report on Friday said Pawar family owned 16 per cent stake in City Corporation, a Pune company that the report claimed had bid for an IPL team in March this year.

Earlier, Pawar dismissed reports of his family”s involvement in the bid for IPL franchisees.

He rubbished a newspaper report linking his family to the IPL bid.

Talking to reporters here, Pawar said: “Neither I nor my family is involved with any IPL team or with the bidding process.”

“Whatever has been reported in the newspaper today was reported two months back also. At that time also I explained my position, which remains the same now. Neither me nor my family has direct or indirect involvement in any IPL team or in the bidding process,” he added.

He also reiterated that the IPL is clean and that there is nothing murky about the ownership patterns and financial transactions in the league.

“The government agencies are inquiring and anyone who has done anything wrong, will be punished,” he added. (ANI)

Jharkhand governor exploring ways to form government: Chidambaram

New Delhi, May 31 (IANS) Home Minister P. Chidambaram Monday said Jharkhand Governor M.O.H. Farook is talking to political parties to explore the possibility of forming an alternative government after Shibu Soren resigned as chief minister late Sunday.

‘Jharkhand governor has told me that he is inviting political parties in the state to form an alternative government,’ Chidambaram told reporters here.

The minister said the governor will get back to him by the end of the day.

Soren resigned Sunday, a day before he was to prove his majority in the assembly following withdrawal of support by the Bharatiya Janata Party

Bahujan Vikas Agadhi wins Vasai-Virar civic polls

Mumbai, May 31 (IANS) Hitendra Thakur-led Bahujan Vikas Agadhi Monday won the first ever election to the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation, on the outskirts of north Mumbai, capturing 55 of the 89 wards.

‘We had expected to win over 50 wards and we got it. I thank all those who had faith in the party and those who elected members of our party,’ Thakur said.

Vivek Pandit-led Jan Andolan Samiti contested from 38 wards and won 19. Out of 48 wards the Congress contested, it won only two.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) failed to open their account from any of the 46 wards they contested, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won one ward out of the 17 contested.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena won from one ward out of 17 contested, while Shiv Sena won from three wards out of 40. Independents won in eight wards.

As many as 383 candidates spread over 89 wards had contested the elections. One candidate of Bahujan Vikas Agadhi was declared elected unopposed.

The election took place Sunday with approximately 43 percent of the 6.5 lakh electorate exercising their franchise, said election officers.

There were 603 polling booths with around 3,500 polling staff on duty.

Situated on the outskirts of north Mumbai, the Vasai taluka had four municipal councils — Vasai, Nala Sopara, Virar and Navghar-Manickpur — and 72 gram panchayats. They were all dissolved and the municipal corporation was formed July 3, 2009.

BJP, Congress seek time for government formation in Jharkhand

Ranchi, May 31 (IANS) Jharkhand Governor M.O.H. Farook Monday summoned leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress to discuss the formation of an alternative government in the state, a day after Shibu Soren quit as chief minister.

‘The governor called us Monday to know our party’s stand on the formation of an alternative government in the state. We have sought time as the issue will be decided by the central leaders,’ state BJP president Raghubar Das told IANS.

A Congress delegation met Farook immediately after the BJP meeting with the governor.

‘We are not in a hurry to form a government. We will form an alterative government only after ensuring the stability factor,’ state Congress president Pradeep Balmuchu told reporters.

Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P) president Babulal Marandi also met the governor.

Soren, who heads the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), met the governor and submitted his resignation Sunday evening, a day before he was to prove his majority in the 81-member state assembly. Sources said that eight of the JMM’s 18 legislators refused to face the trust vote Monday.

The JMM-led five-month-old government was propped up by the BJP with 18 members, the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) with five legislators and the Janata Dal-United’s two members.

The Congress has 14 members, the JVM-P 11, and the Rashtriya Janata Dal five legislators. There also are five independents.

The JMM-led government was reduced to minority after the party’s ally, BJP, finally withdrew support May 24.

After its talks with the BJP collapsed on the issue of sharing power by rotation of 28 months each, the JMM had been in talks with both the Congress and the JVM-P to form an alternative government and avoid President’s Rule in the state.

But with the Congress and its ally JVM-P failing to commit support to the JMM, Soren found no option but to resign.

Jharkhand was plunged into political uncertainty after Soren voted against the BJP’s cut motions on the federal budgetary cuts in Lok Sabha last month.

Is counting the caste good or bad? India is divided

New Delhi, May 31 (IANS) Is it good to ask the Indian his or her caste? The political class is divided although a vast majority of Indians carry their caste firmly etched in their names.

Ever since the Samajwadi Party and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) ignited a storm by demanding that caste identity be included in the national census, political parties have been locked in a war of words.

The government’s initial reported decision to bow to the demand and then ask a panel of ministers to study the issue — effectively keeping the caste-count from the mammoth national census now under way — has added fuel to the fire.

The Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the two biggest parties in parliament, are divided within their ranks.

But Samajwadi Party’s vocal MP Dharmendra Yadav knows his mind. ‘Various welfare schemes of the central government use caste as a yardstick to provide benefits to weaker sections,’ Yadav told IANS. ‘It is important to get a proper enumeration of castes to get accurate data about their numbers.’

Those who want to put the caste back in the census — it was tabulated way back in 1931 when India was under British rule for the first and last time — say there is nothing wrong in counting the caste since Indians are asked their religion anyway.

However, there are dissenting voices.

Ajay Maken, a junior minister in the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government, has warned that a caste-based census would lead to demands from communities to be categorized as OBCs (other backward classes) — to gain official benefits available to people who are socially backward. He is mobilising younger and progressive MPs to lobby as a pressure group against caste-based census.

India’s Hindu community is home to hundreds of castes and sub-castes. The caste system forms the basis of a strict hierarchical society where the lower castes have been economically and socially oppressed for long, though this division is disappearing among the surging middle class as it pursues expanding professional and economic aspirations and integrates socially.

Some of Maken’s ministerial colleagues, including Law Minister M. Veerappa Moily, want caste to be included in the headcount of India’s population.

Opinion among MPs is divided.

BJP leader Arjun Munda, a former Jharkhand chief minister, said any decision on a caste count should be taken after thoroughly analysing its impact on politics, especially the experience of the past 20 years. ‘Having caste census has its merits and demerits. I am against caste politics and feel that an enumeration will accentuate caste identities and hence will have a negative impact,’ he said.

Madhu Goud Yaskhi, a Congress MP from Andhra Pradesh who left a flourishing legal practice in New York to join politics in India, argued that India was a caste-based society anyway.

‘One cannot avoid the caste system. Political parties give ticket on the basis of caste. They look at caste equations in a constituency. Caste is a factor in giving job and education opportunities to weaker sections.’

Like others, he said lack of reliable data on castes was a problem.

So why was his party colleague Maken opposed to Indians being asked their caste? Yaskhi replied that the minister belonged to the upper caste and could be addressing his own constituency.

The Communists are clear: cast away the caste.

Said Anup Kumar Saha, a Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) MP from West Bengal: ‘We are not free from the problem of casteism. A caste census will only complicate matters.’

Saha said even if the government wanted to get data on caste, such information should not be put in public domain as it would only strengthen caste identities.

A senior Congress leader said on the condition of anonymity that caste-based census would pose problems due to the possible clamour for inclusion among the OBCs. If more communities became OBCs, it could pose resistance from those sections already taking benefits of reservation.

Even as the government tries to buy time by referring the issue to a group of ministers, the debate rages on.

Munde’s nephew gets Council ticket

Mumbai, May 29 — Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Gopinath Munde has managed to get a poll ticket for a member of his family. His nephew, Dhananjay Munde was on Friday made an official candidate for the State Legislative Council polls to be held on June 10.

The BJP gave the second seat from its quota to ex-minister and ex-Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Shobhatai Fadnavis. The single Rajya Sabha seat will go to the party’s national treasurer, Piyush Goyal.

The BJP’s Parliamentary Board, which met in New Delhi on Friday, also announced the candidature of ex-youth wing president Suhas Pharande for the council polls from the graduates constituency. This poll will be held next month.

This will be the third political representation in the Munde family. Gopinath is the party’s deputy leader in the Lok Sabha and his elder daughter Pankaja won the 2009 Assembly elections for Parli in Marathwada.

When Munde didn’t get Dhananjay an Assembly ticket last year, he managed one for Madhusudan Kendre, the son-in-law of Munde’s elder brother. But Kendre lost the elections.

JMM-led Jharkhand Govt to complete its five-year term: Soren

Bokaro (Jharkhand), May 21 (ANI): Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren on Friday said the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led Government would complete its full five-year term in the state.

“I have formed the government for five years, and shall complete the tenure. Who will remove me?” said Soren exactly three days after he had agreed to form the government in Jharkhand on a rotational basis with the help of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“The question of a change of government comes if there is no development. But now development is going on,” said Soren giving indications that there was no deadline for his resignation.

Earlier on Thursday, Soren did not rule out the contesting by poll to enter the house, which he must do constitutionally by June 30, as he is a Member of Parliament (MP).

Meanwhile, Soren’s son Hemant said: “The party has to abide by whatever decision the president (Soren) has taken or will take.”

The JMM-BJP coalition government plunged into a political crisis after the BJP withdrew support to government in the wake of Shibu Soren voting in favour of the UPA during the cut motion in parliament on April 27.

The BJP first announced it would immediately withdraw support from the JMM-led government, which would have brought it down and effectively led to the imposition of President”s Rule or attempts by the Congress to form an alternative government.

However, by April 29 when the party received a letter from Hemant Soren, offering to support the BJP in leading the coalition, the withdrawal of support was “put on hold” and a dialogue was opened. (ANI)

President Patil to take decision on Afzal Guru”s mercy petition: Sheila Dikshit

New Delhi, May 21 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday said President Pratibha Devisingh Patil would take the decision on the mercy petition of Afzal Guru, an accused in the Parliament attack case.

Dikshit said the file pertaining on the Afzal Guru case had been sent to both the Ministry of Home Affairs and the office of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, and added that their replies are awaited.

“All orders given by the Supreme Court will be followed. However, at the same time, Guru”s wife has moved a mercy petition to the President of India. The file related to the case is with the Home Ministry and the office of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi,” said Dikshit.

“Clearly, I am not in a position to decide Guru”s fate. Then what comment can I give?” she told the media persons, while attending a blood donation camp organized to commemorate the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday protested against the delay by the Delhi Government in giving its opinion on the mercy petition moved by Afzal Guru, to show that this case was one of terrorism alone and had nothing to do with any community in particular.

Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly V.K. Malhotra also criticised the Delhi Government for delaying the hanging of Afzal Guru due to vote bank politics.

Despite dithering by the government on the question of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru”s hanging, Congress on Wednesday made it clear that it favoured such a step at an early date.

“If the Supreme Court convicted Afzal Guru in the Parliament attack case giving him death sentence, there should be no problem in hanging him,” party general secretary Digvijay Singh.

Congress Spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi had said the concerned authorities within the government should decide the matter.

Guru was awarded death sentence by a Delhi court on December 18, 2002 after being convicted of conspiracy to attack Parliament on December 13, 2001, waging war against the country and murder.

Delhi High Court upheld the death sentence on October 29, 2003 and his appeal was rejected by the Supreme Court two years later on August four, 2005.

Following this, Afzal filed a mercy petition with the President, who forwarded it to Union Home Ministry for its comments.

The Union Home Ministry had sent the file to Delhi Government”s Home Department for its comments, as per the laid out procedure.

The 2001 Indian Parliament attack, led to the death of a dozen people; five terrorists, six policemen and a civilian. It also caused increased tensions between India and Pakistan resulting in the 2001-2002 India-Pakistan standoff.

On that day, a group of gun-and grenade-wielding terrorists who stormed the seemingly impregnable Parliament House premises, were stopped dead in their tracks by security men as the nation watched in disbelief. (ANI)

Chidambaram wants BJP to maintain bipartisan approach to Maoist menace

New Delhi, May 19 (ANI): Home Minister P. Chidambaram has suggested that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) should maintain a bipartisan approach to the Maoists issue.

Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, Chidambaram said: “I would appeal to all political parties, especially the BJP to maintain a bipartisan approach to deal with the Naxals.

Chidambaram was reacting to the comments made by senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley, wherein he is reported to have said that Chidambaram looked like an ”injured martyr” after Maoist rebels blew up a bus full of civilians in Chhattisgarh.

Chidambaram also spoke about the Central government”s strategy in dealing with the Maoists and termed it as a ”limited mandate” by contending it was the primary responsibility of the State governments to tackle the menace.

“Our mandate is to help the State governments take on the challenge of Naxalites by providing paramilitary forces, intelligence and technical assistance. It”s the State governments which have the primarily responsibility to tackle the menace of Naxalism. It is in that context that I said that our mandate is a limited mandate,” opined Chidambaram.

About 35 people were killed when Maoists blew up a private bus near Dantewada in Chhattisgarh.

The bus was on its way from Dantewada to Sukma. The incident took place near Chingawaram, about nine kilometers from Sukma.

The bus was carrying 20 special police officers (SPO) and over 30 civilians. (ANI)

Delhi Govt. backs SC’s verdict on Afzal Guru

New Delhi, May 18 (ANI): Faced by Bharatiya Janata Party’s criticism of the Congress party, the Sheila Dikshit-led Delhi government on Tuesday decided to back the Supreme Court’s verdict to hang Afzal Guru, an accused in the Parliament attack case.

However, while backing the SC’s verdict, the Delhi government has reportedly maintained that it will need to examine the law and order implication in case Afzal was hanged, an NDTV report quoted sources as saying.

The Delhi government has been sitting on the file for nearly four years and the capital punishment awarded to Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab in the Mumbai attacks case brought the issue under fresh focus.

Guru was awarded death sentence by a Delhi court on December 18, 2002 after being convicted of conspiracy to attack Parliament on December 13, 2001, waging war against the country and murder.

The death sentence was upheld by Delhi High Court on October 29, 2003 and his appeal was rejected by the Supreme Court two years later on August four, 2005.

A sessions court also fixed the date of his hanging on October 20, 2006 in Tihar jail.

Following this, Afzal filed a mercy petition with the President, who forwarded it to Union Home Ministry for its comments.

The Union Home Ministry had sent the file to Delhi Government”s Home Department for its comments, as per the laid out procedure.

The 2001 Indian Parliament attack, led to the death of a dozen people; five terrorists, six policemen and a civilian). It also caused increased tensions between India and Pakistan resulting in the 2001-2002 India-Pakistan standoff.

Jharkhand impasse: BJP fails to take final call

New Delhi, May 15 (ANI): The political crisis in Jharkhand continues with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) core committee failing on Saturday to take a decision on government formation in the state.

On Friday, the BJP leadership reviewed Jharkhand developments and considered the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha”s (JMM) offer of leading the JMM-BJP coalition in the State.

Three rounds of meetings were held over a six-hour period.

The BJP has, so far, maintained that its chief minister would lead the state for the next four-and-a-half years, while the JMM has been insisting on a rotational arrangement, with each chief minister (BJP’s and then JMM’s) getting 28 months each.

BJP vice president Prakash Javdekar said there was no urgency to take a decision.

He said there is a functioning government in Jharkhand and the party would come out with its decision under its own time frame.

Meanwhile, the Congress has hinted that it might demand imposition of President”s Rule if the stalemate continues.

Party spokesman Shakil Ahmed said the Congress has not staked a claim to form a government in the state.

The JMM-BJP coalition government plunged into crisis after the BJP withdrew support to Chief Minister Shibu Soren’s government after he voted in favour of the UPA during a cut motion in Parliament on April 27.

However, by April 29 the party received a letter from Hemant Soren, the son of the chief minister, offering support to the BJP in leading the coalition. (ANI)

BJP likely to take final call on Jharkhand government today

New Delhi, May 14 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to arrive at a consensus over who will be Jharkhand’s new chief minister on Friday.

Senior BJP leaders are meeting here to finalise the name.

After the meeting, the party is likely to send observers to Ranchi to convey its decision to party MLAs.

Interacting with media in Chandigarh on Thursday, BJP president Nitin Gadkari said the party would take a final call on Friday.

“I had only a brief meeting with party observers in Delhi yesterday as I was flying to Chandigarh. Tomorrow evening, when I will return to Delhi, I will be meeting them and other senior leaders,” Gadkari said.

Meanwhile, the lack of consensus among BJP leaders has led to a delay in arriving at a solution to the crisis.

The JMM is insisting on a rotational power sharing arrangement.

Under that scheme, the BJP would get to head the state government for 28 months followed by the JMM for another 28 months.

Apparently, the JMM has agreed to let the BJP the first chance at chief ministership although the JMM has already been heading the government for the last five months.

The JMM-BJP coalition government plunged into a political crisis after the BJP withdrew support to government in the wake of Chief Minister Shibu Soren voting in favour of the UPA during the cut motion in parliament on April 27.

The BJP first announced it would immediately withdraw support from the JMM-led government, which would have brought it down and effectively led to the imposition of President”s Rule or attempts by the Congress to form an alternative government.

However, by April 29 when the party received a letter from Hemant Soren, son of the Chief Minister Shibu Soren, offering to support the BJP in leading the coalition, the withdrawal of support was “put on hold” and a dialogue was opened. (ANI)

Gadkari apologises for his remarks on Mulayam, Lalu

New Delhi, May 13 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Nitin Gadkari has apologised to Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Lalu Prasad for using abusive language against them.

Gadkari”s remarks came in the context of his criticism of the two leaders for their not backing the cut motions in the Parliament and how some people had helped the Congress.

“I was only using a proverb. I only used this with reference to the CBI. They are respectable leaders. If they are hurt by my comments, I take back my words,” Gadkari said.

He allegedly used abusive language about the two leaders at a BJP rally in Chandigarh.
He said: “Mulayam and Lalu once used to oppose the Congress and the UPA Government. They bowed before the CBI. In their inquiry, somewhere the lawyer was changed, while somewhere the affidavit was changed.”

He said the two leaders pretended to be lions, but later bowed down before the CBI.
Meanwhile, the Congress on Thursday said Gadkari had used highly derogatory language.

Party spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan termed Gadkari”s remarks as shocking and outrageous, saying he should apologise to the nation for bringing politics to such a low.

No end to political crisis in Jharkhand

Ranchi, May 12 (ANI): The political situation in Jharkhand remains unclear with talks between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and All Jharkhand Student Union (AJSU) reaching a dead end yet again on Wednesday.

“We are discussing the situation with various supporting parties. Talks are on to resolve the matter and there are positive signs. I feel that the present political situation is grave and must be resolved soon, to uphold the trust of people who had elected the government for their welfare,” said Sudesh Mahato, State Minister and AJSU President.

Due to internal differences, the BJP has been unable to appoint a chief ministerial candidate, even as the party”s central observers, Rajnath Singh and Ananth Kumar, seek a consensus with supporting factions.

On the other hand, JMM leaders have not taken a clear stand on which candidate they wish to support as the Chief Minister, further complicating matters.

“All views are being discussed in the ongoing talks, and we are hopeful of arriving at a decision soon,” said Hemant Soren, son of ex-Chief Minister Shibu Soren and a possible candidate for the post of Deputy Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, a few other political parties are closely observing the scenario, and are offering ”formulae” to the JMM to resolve the crisis.

Babulal Marandi, chief of the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) (JVMP) has also joined the fray and has offered support to a coalition of like-minded parties like the JVMP, JMM and the Indian National Congress. Marandi has also asked that the ruling government of the state must be immediately dismissed.

“In my view, no political party will support the JMM in the present scenario. This is because the JMM has not done anything worthwhile for the masses ever since it came to power,” claimed Marandi.

The JMM-led government in Jharkhand was reduced to a minority on April 28 after the BJP withdrew its support, as it was reportedly upset withy Soren for voting with the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government on the cut motion.

After the BJP”s pullout, the ruling coalition has been reduced to 28 Members in a House. (ANI)

Congress ticks off Jairam Ramesh for comments on Home Ministry

New Delhi, May 10 (ANI): Congress Spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Monday criticized Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh for his alleged comments in China on the Home Ministry.

“It was not proper for Jairam Ramesh to comment on another ministry. He should have not made those comments,” said Singhvi.

“Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has made his displeasure clear to the Union Minister,” he added.

Further lashing out at Ramesh”s comments, Singhvi said: “We don”t approve of the comments made by Jairam Ramesh. Yes, as a party, we disapprove his comments.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has sought an explanation from the Prime Minister on the whole issue.

“Lobbyists have entered the Union Cabinet. Prime Minister must reign in his ministers and give an explanation on the whole issue,” said a BJP leader.

Dr Singh reportedly spoke to Ramesh over his critical comments.

PMO sources said Dr Singh asked Ramesh not to comment on the functioning of other ministries.

On a visit to China this weekend at an international conference on climate change, Ramesh embarrassed his own government by using words like ”alarmist” and ”paranoid” for the Home Ministry”s policies on the entry of Chinese companies in India. (ANI)
