London — Pop Singer George Michael was arrested in the early hours of yesterday morning after his car collided with another vehicle.

He was questioned by police on suspicion of driving under the influence of drink or drugs, and was later released without charge, the BBC said.

The 46-year-old singer, who had just completed a two-year driving ban, was held after his silver Land Rover hit a lorry on the A34 in Berkshire at around 1am.  He was taken to Lodden Valley police station, near Reading, for questioning before being released around five hours later.

A spokeswoman for Thames Valley police said: “Officers were called at 1am on August 14 to a collision on the southbound carriageway of the A34, approximately two miles north of the M4.

“It was between a silver Land Rover and an articulated lorry. The driver of the Land Rover, a 46-year-old man, was arrested at the scene.

“He was taken to Lodden Valley police station, where he was questioned and released at 5.55am.”

The lorry driver, Laurie Rowe, told the Daily Mail that Michael had been “completely disorientated, like he had no idea what was going on”.

“He looked totally dazed and even tried to climb into the cab of my lorry. He kept saying he was worried he would go to jail.”

But in a statement released today, Michael denied being drunk. “Neither of us was charged because we were both stone cold sober,” he said. “We both think the other is to blame so this is just an insurance fight.

“I don’t want my fans or my family worried by what they are reading all over again.”

George Michael who has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, with seven US number one singles, 11 number one singles in Britain and six number one albums, was also cautioned for drugs possession in 2008.

Archaeologists find evidence of Britain’s earliest Iron Age town

London, July 16 (ANI): Archaeologists from Berkshire, UK, have discovered evidence of an Iron Age town underneath the remains of a Roman settlement in north Hampshire, which they say could be Britain’s earliest Iron Age towns with a planned layout.

According to a report by BBC News, the discovery was made by the University of Reading’s Archaeology Department, which has been excavating at the Silchester Roman site, Calleva Atrebatum, since 1997.

A street-grid was found to have been in place before the Romans came in AD 43. Archaeologists have also discovered evidence of widespread burning at the site.

They believe this, along with other finds, suggests that the site could have been destroyed at the hands of queen Boudicca, who in AD 60/61 led a major uprising against the occupying Roman forces.

“After 12 summers of excavation, we have reached down to the 1st Century AD and are beginning to see the first signs of what we believe to be the Iron Age and earliest Roman town,” said Professor Michael Fulford, director of the Silchester Town Life Project.

“The discovery of the underlying Iron Age settlement is extremely exciting. While there are traces of settlement beneath Roman Verulamium (today’s St Albans) and Canterbury and close to the site of Roman Colchester, none of these resembles the evidence that we have here at Calleva of a planned town,” he said.

“The completely new street grid implemented later by the Romans could have been a thumbs down on the British arrangement,” he added.

According to Professor Fulford, “We now have evidence that the town was burnt down sometime after AD 50 and before AD 80.”

“The possibility that this was at the hands of Boudicca when leading the largest British uprising during the Roman occupation is hugely significant. It was not thought the revolt passed this way,” he said. (ANI)

Prince William’s girlfriend wants to move on from ‘boring’ family job

London, July 12 (ANI): Prince William’s girlfriend Kate Middleton has had enough of putting in long hours working for her parents’ business Party Pieces and she now wants to explore new horizons as she is looking for more challenging employment.

Kate has been running the company’s website ever since she was accused of being work shy and unwilling to commit herself to a real job while she waited for her Royal beau to finish his military training.

But now, Kate has admitted to a close friend that she has begun to find her current job a little boring” and wants to find a job that will “stretch her mind”.

She has spent the past few months working hard in developing Party Pieces’ website and photographing the new products that have been added to its range of party paraphernalia.

And she is now thinking that there is not much else for her to do at the company’s head quarters close to the Middleton family home in Berkshire.

“Kate is really grateful to her parents for providing a safe haven and something to do when she was under pressure – she was really upset when people called her Waitie Katie,” the Daily Express quoted one of her friends as saying.

The pal added: “But now she feels like doing something new, maybe not even in this country.”

It has already been reported that Kate, 27, is considering using the time that William is occupied with his military career by seeking her own vocational break in America.

“She wants to expand her horizons and feels this is the time to do it, when she has few other responsibilities. She wants to experience new things before the time comes when she won’t be able to have any sort of serious life,” said a pal.

Kate has long been interested in fashion and photography and has a mentor in one of the biggest movers in US fashion, Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of American Vogue.

Wintour has encouraged her to get a few months’ experience learning about the industry in New York.

But in the mean time, Kate has to continue to concentrate on her job with Party Pieces. (ANI)

Kate Winslet stuns pupils at her old stage school with surprise visit

London, Jun 27 (ANI): English actress Kate Winslet reportedly stunned pupils at her old stage school when she turned up for a rehearsal session.

The students had no idea that Winslet, 33, was there until stage curtains were drawn back at Blessed Hugh Faringdon School, Southcote, Reading.

“Don’t be shy because I am very normal. Ask me questions, anything you like,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

The actress, who is a patron of Berkshire-based amateur dramatic group Starmaker, answered questions from budding actors and actresses before taking part in a drama workshop.

The ‘Titanic’ star then went on to give acting tips to the actors on how to overcome first night nerves.

“When the lights come on you’re so blinded you can’t see the audience. So you don’t have to be nervous at all,” she said.

She watched rehearsals for productions of Boogie Nights and Wizard of Oz, before taking part in a workshop with Jack Kowalik, 15.

“I was so starstruck because she was acting right next to me, and I was thinking: ‘What if I do something really bad’?” Kowalik said. (ANI)

Poison resistant ‘super rats’ invade Britain

London, May 16 (ANI): A new breed of “super rat” with DNA that makes them resistant to poison and subsequently almost impossible to kill are evolving in the British corners, experts have warned.

According to Professor Robert Smith at the University of Huddersfield, genetic mutations have led rats across the country to develop protection against standard toxins.

Ratcatchers in Berkshire and Hampshire first reported that their poisons were no longer working on the vermins and scientists accorded the reason to boosted immunity among the pests, thanks to an entirely new strand of DNA.

Smith, from the applied sciences department, said these “super rats” could be spreading across the country, that is believed to have witnessed a rise of more than 200 per cent in rat population since 2007.

“Natural selection means that when you have a rat population in your town, poison will kill the ones that aren’t resistant, the ones that survive may have the gene, they then have babies who can receive the gene themselves,” Telegraph quoted him as saying.

“There are mutations and changes in their DNA that alter the ability of rats to deal with these poisons. It appears to be moving west and has now been located in Swindon and Bristol. It is a warning of things to come,” he added. (ANI)

Obama’s brother denies sex assault on young girls

London, April 13 (ANI): U.S. President Barack Obama’s half brother, Samson, has denied that he had tried to sexually assault a group of young girls in Britain last year.

Samson was refused UK visa when records showed that he had been arrested for attempted sex attack on a group of young girls, including a 13 year-old in Berkshire last November, as per reports.

The 41-year-old, one of the President’s 11 half brothers and sisters by his father who had four partners, was said to have been later fingerprinted but not charged before he left the country.

Samson, however, has allegedly told a UK-based relative, Ian Manners, that he was detained over a pub scuffle, insisting: “I was involved in a pub fight which had nothing to do with any young girls.”

“He would not get involved with 13- year-old girls. It is unthinkable,” the Sun quoted Manners as saying. (ANI)

Reports: Obama’s half-brother refused entry into Britain

London – Britain refused an entry visa for US President Barack Obama’s half-brother, Samson Obama, who was implicated in alleged sexual assault in Britain and a false document attached to his statement, British media reported Sunday. Samson, a Kenyan, was stopped and turned back by immigration officials at the East Midlands Airport in January while en route to Washington for Barack Obama’s inauguration, the Press Association reported.

The news agency cited a Home Office spokesman as confirming that the visa was refused after immigration officers noticed a falsified document included in Samson Obama’s visa application.

Further inquiries then showed he had been arrested by police in Berkshire after an alleged sex attack on a girl around the time of his last stay in Britain last November but not charged, according to the News of the World reported.

The world’s largest steelmaker, Lakshmi Mittal, is also Europe’s richest resident with a personal fortune of 45 billion dollars.

Asia’s richest resident and Reliance Industries chief Mukesh Ambani has a fortune worth 43 billion dollars.

Mukesh’s brother and the year’s biggest gainer, Anil Ambani, is in sixth place with a fortune of 42 billion dollars.

Buffett likens meltdown to “an economic Pearl Harbour”

New york, Mar. 10 (ANI): America’s billionaire investor Warren Buffett has likened the current global meltdown to “an economic Pearl Harbor”, and doesn’t expect the US economy to recover anytime soon.

The CEO of Berkshire Hathaway said the US economy has “fallen off a cliff” and the current financial situation is “close to the worst case” that he had predicted six months ago.

“You have to recognize that it is an economic Pearl Harbor. I’ve never seen the consumer or the Americans just generally more fearful than this. Not only has the economy slowed down, but people have really changed their habits like I haven’t seen,” the New York Post quoted Buffett as telling at CNBC’s “Squawk Box” show during a three-hour interview.

Despite Buffett’s depressing forecast about the US economy, “Oracle of Omaha” remained optimistic about its long-term financial prospects.

“Everything will be all right. US economy will be running fine in five years. We do have the greatest economic machine that man has ever created,” said Buffett.

Buffett, whose company suffered a 62 percent drop in profits in 2008, said the national unemployment rate – already at a 25-year high – will go a “fair amount” higher before the recession ends.

The legendary investor said inflation has the “potential” to exceed levels seen in the 1970s, when oil price hikes shocked the economy.

Buffett urged all members of Congress to back President Obama’s efforts to stop the financial bleeding and spark a recovery.

“What’s required is a commander in chief that’s looked at like a commander in chief in a time of war,” he said.

He defended government intervention in the economy even at the cost of taxpayers’ money.

“We’re in a big war, and we’re going to use money to fight it. The people that behaved well are no doubt going to be finding themselves taking care of the people who didn’t behave well,” Buffett said. (ANI)

Whole village up for sale for 22m pounds

London, Mar 8 (ANI): A village, which has a cricket club, a shop and a large three-storey manor house, has been put up for sale for 22.5 million pounds.

The historic village of 22 houses and cottages is located in the Test Valley, north Hampshire, near the borders with Berkshire and Wiltshire – a region officially designated by Natural England as an area of outstanding natural beauty.

It is part of a 2,000-acre estate, which will go on the market later this month.

Among the properties up for sale are a cricket pitch and pavilion, which doubles as the village hall, a large three-storey manor house, and a village shop run from the front room of one of the homes.

Two properties from which agricultural blacksmiths operate, a commercial shoot, farming land, and an educational activity centre for children, are also up for sale.

The only property in the village not owned by the estate is its church, St Peters, which dates back to the 12th century but was rebuilt significantly in 1871. It still holds services, on the third Sunday of each month.

Tina Abbott, 59, who runs the village shop from her home, has been the resident of the village for 39 years.

“We understand that whoever buys the estate will get everything, lock stock and barrel. It has got to be someone who will run it like it is now,” the Telegraph quoted her, as saying.

“It used to be a really close knit community because everyone living here worked on the farm estate. It isn’t quite like that now. But is still a wonderful place to live.

“If you go quarter of a mile outside the village in any direction, you can look around you and not see another living soul,” she added. (ANI)

Brown Govt. slammed over US using Brit atomic weapons factory for its nuke program

London, Feb.9 (ANI): The Gordon Brown Government has placed itself in hot waters after the British Defence MInistry revealed that the United States military has been using an atomic weapons factory in Britain to carry out research into its own nuclear warhead programme.

The Guardian quoted US defense officials as saying that “very valuable” warhead research has taken place at the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Aldermaston in Berkshire as part of an ongoing and secretive deal between the British and American Governments.

The extent of US involvement at Aldermaston came to light in an interview with John Harvey, Policy and Planning Director at the US National Nuclear Security Administration, carried out last year by the think tanks Chatham House and the Centre for Strategic Studies.

Referring to “dual axis hydrodynamic” experiments which, with the help of computer modelling, replicate the conditions inside a warhead at the moment it starts to explode, Harvey said: “There are some capabilities that the UK has that we don’t have and that we borrow… that I believe we have been able to exploit that’s been very valuable to us.”

The British Defence Ministry admitted it is working with the US on the UK’s “existing nuclear warhead stockpile and the range of replacement options that might be available” but declined to give any further information.

In the wake of this revelation, opposition MPs have called for a full parliamentary inquiry into the extent of the collaboration at Aldermaston and campaign groups warned any such deal was in breach of international law.

They added that it also undermined Britain’s claim to have an independent nuclear weapons programme and meant British taxpayers were effectively subsidising America’s nuclear programme.

It is unclear whether the experiments are still being carried out but, in the same interview, Harvey admitted that the US and UK had struck a new deal over the level of cooperation, including work on US plans for a new generation of nuclear warhead known as the Reliable Replacement Warhead. (ANI)
