CR clears coach from accident site

Mumbai, May 29 — A day after Hindustan Times reported that the Central Railway had not cleared the site of a railway accident that had occurred more than six months ago, one of the coaches that was lying precariously close to the railway line was moved. On Monday, May 24, Hindustan Times had reported that 11 coaches of the Bangalore-bound 6505 Down Gandhidham-Bengaluru Express that had derailed between Bhiwandi Road and Kopar stations in November 2009 were still lying at the same site.

One of the derailed air-conditioned coaches had been placed on wooden blocks very close to the tracks on a curve on the Diva-Vasai section of Central Railway’s Mumbai division. The coach was removed on Tuesday.

“It is not correct to say that the Central Railway has not bothered to correct the accident site. In fact, of the 11 coaches, ten coaches have been removed so far,” a Central Railway spokesperson said requesting anonymity.

“The other coach will be soon removed. The coach that is now lying at the accident site is at a sufficiently safe distance from the running track.

” When HT visited the site on Thursday, one coach was still there. A few wheels, batteries and technical equipment were strewn around.

“There is no confusion regarding the authority on who will clear these coaches,” the spokesperson said referring to some railway officials’ statements that since the coaches belong to the South Western Railway, the decision on what needs to be done with the coaches lies with them.

Nearly 20,000 Hong Kong airline staff asked to take unpaid leave

Hong Kong – Hong Kong’s leading airlines Cathay Pacific and Dragonair Friday invited nearly 20,000 employees to take between one and four weeks of unpaid leave as part of a raft of cost-cutting measures.

The sister airlines also announced that they would cut flight schedules, axing some Dragonair flights to mainland China and cutting Cathay Pacific’s London flight schedule by 17 a month upwards.

The cost-cutting moves came as the airlines announced that first quarter revenue on Cathay Pacific and Dragonair for passenger and cargo services fell 22.4 per cent from 2008.

Cathay Pacific said it would cut passenger capacity by 8 per cent and overall cargo by 11 per cent from May in response to the downturn.

All staff would, meanwhile, be invited to take between one and four weeks unpaid leave depending on seniority, although the airline stressed the leave would not be mandatory.

Cathay chief executive Tony Tyler said: “We have no option but to take measures that will help us weather the current storm and maintain the long-term sustainability of the business.

“Our staff are being asked to make sacrifices that will be needed to see the company through this violent storm. The pain will be shared from the top down.”

Flight frequencies or seat capacity would be reduced on flights to London, Paris, Frankfurt, Sydney, Singapore, Bangkok, Seoul, Taipei, Tokyo, Mumbai and Dubai, Cathay Pacific announced.

Dragonair will meanwhile cut its passenger capacity by 13 per cent, reducing its services to Bengaluru, Busan, Sanya and Shanghai and suspending services to Fukuoka, Dalian, Shenyang, Guilin and Xian.

Dragonair chief executive officer Kenny Tang said: “Our business has been badly hit since the financial crisis first began to bite late last year.

“We have seen a significantly reduced demand for premium travel and pressure on our passenger yield due to the low fares in the market.

“The cost-cutting measures we have initiated since the end of last year are clearly not enough so we have no alternative but to introduce further measures to help us preserve cash.”

Unions representing pilots and flight attendants were Friday still locked in talks with management over the unpaid leave issue and the other cost-cutting measures.

More than 1,000 Cathay Pacific flight attendants and around 200 pilots took voluntary unpaid leave when it was offered in December in an earlier move to reduce costs.

Cathay Pacific has 13,600 staff in Hong Kong and 3,400 staff overseas while Dragonair has 1,820 staff in Hong Kong and 680 staff overseas.(dpa)

Masks of political leaders hot favourite in poll campaign

Bengaluru, Apr 2 (ANI): Face masks of various political leaders seem to have become hot favourite among voters this election.

An event management company in Bengaluru creates face masks of just any political leader who matters in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

With the Election Commission coming down heavily on party candidates to cut down on campaign expenditure, this is probably the easiest and cheapest way to get to the masses.

Sporting masks of their favourite leaders, party workers undertake door-to-door campaign to help voters get familiar with their leaders.

Ravi Shankar Bettampadi, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Events House said that since it’s impossible for the leaders to visit every household due to hectic schedule during elections, voters would atleast get to know how their leaders look like.

“It’s an innovative concept. Congress party president Sonia Gandhi and senior BJP leader Advani cannot go and give his or her thoughts across India. They would need security, but we can overcome the problems by using masks,” said Bettampadi.

From creating mask of Sonia Gandhi to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, the event management company has produced lakhs of face masks of almost every political leader.

Advani, Janata Dal (Secular) supremo H D Deve Gowda, former Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi are the other hot favourite ones.

Demand for the masks is pouring in, which is expected to increase further in the coming days, as elections dates are nearing in.

“Right now, we are working on the face mask of Shiv Kumar Udasi for which we have received order for 50,000. We have also started receiving orders for face masks of Sonia Gandhi, Advani, Manmohan Singh and other political leaders,” said Munish, a designer, Events House.

The Events House has not yet received order for the most popular figure ofolitics, Railways Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav. The entire unit is looking forward to make Lalu’s face-mask.

The masks making process involve taking pictures of political leaders. With the extensive use of graphics and Photoshop, the pictures are then scanned before they are printed. By Jaipal Sharma (ANI)

BJP revives Ram temple building plan ahead of polls

Kolkata/Bengaluru, Mar 15 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday said that it would construct a Ram temple in Ayodhya that has been a flashpoint of tension between both Hindus and Muslims for years.

Denying that the party had put the controversial proposal on the backburner, senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi said that his outfit would make a new law to facilitate construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya if voted to power.

“Ram Temple is not only our but the issue of the whole country and a demand of the whole nation. Construction of the temple is important for the country. It is better if all get it constructed otherwise the party will do it by making a new law, which we have been saying for quite long,” he added.

Meanwhile, lashing at the Communist parties for not being reliable, another BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu questioned the future of the Third Front.

“Because for the Third Front, the Communist parties taking initiative from behind but Communist parties are not reliable, they are not credible because they are known always of playing antipathy towards BJP. Whenever there is problem, they will rush to the support of the Congress. So can these parties give assurance to the people that they will not go with Congress, they can’t. Any combination without a leader, without agenda, without common seat-sharing cannot survive for long,” said Naidu, who was campaigning for the party in Bengaluru.

A group of smaller political parties, including the communists, formally launched the “Third Front” on March 12 in a bid to provide an alternative to the two main national coalitions.

An alliance of nine parties, the Third Front will take on the ruling national coalition led by the Congress party and the main opposition bloc led by the BJP.

Analysts say the Third Front is unlikely to be able to form a government without the support of the main national parties, and is not a very cohesive alliance in any case. (ANI)

New Delhi, Feb 12 (ANI): In her address to the joint sitting of Parliament, President Pratibha Patil today said the country witnessed terrorist attacks in several cities with growing levels of sophistication and assistance from outside the country.

“My government is heartened by the international support it has received after these attacks. There is greater appreciation in the international community of the threat that exists to the region and the world from the terrorism emanating from Pakistan,” she said.

“Pakistan has eroded the achievements of the bilateral dialogue process and has caused a grave setback to relations,” she added.

Antony wants Aerospace technology to develop responses to terrorism

Bengaluru, Feb 9 (ANI): With the terrorist outfits adopting new methods to wreak havoc in civil society, Defence Minister AK Antony today called for ‘a calibrated international response’ to prevent recurrence of such attacks in future.

Opening an international seminar on “Aerospace-Perspectives and Trends in Technologies’ to coincide with Aero-India 2009 here, Antony said the methods used by the terrorists require a collective and well-coordinated response.

“The dynamics of security are changing continuously across the world. The unconventional means of warfare used by the terrorists as seen in the 9/11 attacks and the recent terror attacks on Mumbai demand a calibrated international response. Technology has to be backed up by a proactive response from the government and the civil society,” he said.

Talking about the modernisation of Indian Air Force, the Defence Minister said the ongoing global economic downturn will not affect the same and assured that resources in full measure will be provided to achieve this objective.

Antony called upon the private industry to come forward and spend more for R andD in defence sector.

Giving the example of the development of missile systems in which a number of players, both in private and public sectors are stake holders, Antony said the all round development of the country needs committed and collective effort from all sectors-the scientists, engineers, industrialists, civil services and the Armed Forces. He said the aviation sector is witnessing a large scale expansion.

“In such a scenario, our scientists and manufacturers need exposure to the best international practices to hone their skills. Developments in aerospace sector have triggered changes in related spheres like telecommunication and electronics,” he said.

Referring to the ‘offset policy’ of the government, which is aimed at enhancing the technical, and manufacturing potential, he said, “It would prove beneficial to both, the Indian industry and foreign partners. The policy also provides for the growth of medium and small entrepreneurs.”

He further said that this seminar will provide opportunities to project their capabilities.

Appreciating the achievements of the Defence R andD establishments in the country, he stressed the importance of timely delivery of the products.

Recalling the vision of Jawaharlal Nehru of a self-reliant nation in Defence technology, he reminded that the country has achieved only 30 per cent indigenisation and is still importing as much as 70 per cent of its requirements.

Over 850 delegates from 12 countries are taking part in the three-day seminar organised by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

The seminar is focussing on futuristic trends in aerospace technologies. For the first time, nearly 150 students from various engineering colleges and institutions in the country are taking part in the seminar.

Among others who were present in the inaugural ceremony were DRDO Chief M Natarajan, Secretary, Department of Defence Production, Pradeep Kumar and Chairman, HAL, Ashok Baweja. (ANI)
