India Air Force activates Nyoma airfield close to China border

New Delhi, Sep 18 (ANI): The Indian Air Force in a significant move today activated its Nyoma Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) to support the Army in carrying out operations in the inhospitable terrain.

An IAF AN-32 aircraft landed at Nyoma ALG, which is located at an altitude of 13,300 feet in Leh district of Jammu and Kashmir, at 6:25 a.m. today. It is located 23 kms from the Line of Actual Control. (LAC).

The successful landing of a fixed wing aircraft at Nyoma marks the culmination of joint effort by the IAF and Indian Army to enable the IAF to operate in the inhospitable terrain of Leh-Ladakh region in support of the Army.

The landing comes just fifteen months after an AN-32 landed at Daulat-Beg-Oldie (DBO), the highest airfield in the world situated at an altitude of 16,200 feet.

Group Captain SC Chafekar touched down on the Nyoma airstrip. Air Marshal NAK Browne, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Air Command and Lieutenant General PC Bharadwaj, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command on board.

Though helicopters have been landing at this ALG, this is for the first time that a fixed wing aircraft has landed at the compact airstrip of Nyoma.

After deliberating on all aspects and carrying out aerial and ground inspection, it was concluded that Nyoma could be developed for fixed wing operations as well.

The Engineer Regiments of 14 Corps undertook the herculean task of developing the ALG to the standards required for fixed wing operations.

Joint development of Nyoma braving the extremely difficult working conditions and hostile weather is yet another step towards enhanced joint partnership between the two services.

Nyoma has been developed with an aim to connect the remote areas of Ladakh region to the mainland. This would also ensure movements in the area when the road traffic gets affected, during the harsh winters besides enabling improved communication network in the region. (ANI)

Political parties begin blame game on 1989 Bhagalpur riots

Bhagalpur, Apr 25 (ANI): Political parties in Bihar have begun playing politics using the infamous Bhagalpur riots of 1989 that claimed over 1000 lives.

Earlier this week, the Congress accused the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief, Lalu Prasad, of protecting the main conspirators of the riots. Lalu blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for killing of minorities.

Shami Begum, a riot victim who lost four members of her family, said politicians highlight this issue during every election to garner votes from themselves.

“The government gave us Rs. 1,10,000 as compensation. But, if my husband would have been alive then he could have earned more than this. The government is not looking at our plight even after 20 years,” Begum claimed.

BJP leader Arif Beg said the allegations against his party came from those who were the actual masterminds.

“People who were responsible for the riots themselves are making such statements. They are doing this to defend themselves. I feel the public is keeping a positive note of our works for the past three years,” Baig said.

The riots erupted after a Hindu religious procession was allegedly stoned by Muslims. Over 1,000 people, a majority of them Muslims, were killed in the month-long riots in Bhagalpur city in October 1989. (ANI)

Top Fiat official says Turin giant is in talks with Chrysler

Top Fiat official says Turin giant is in talks with Chrysler Rome – Fiat deputy chairman John Elkann said Tuesday that the Turin-based carmaker is in talks with Chrysler amid reports of a possible purchase by the Italian company of a majority stake in the ailing US producer.

“It is no secret that we are talking. It has been a while that we are in talks,” Elkann, a heir of the Agnelli family which controls Fiat, was quoted as saying by the ANSA news agency.

Elkann indicated more details on a possible deal would be available following a Fiat statement later Tuesday and a meeting of the company’s board scheduled for Thursday.

Earlier Tuesday, Milan’s Bourse announced trading in Fiat stocks had been suspended pending the statement’s release.

The Wall Street Journal reported Monday that Fiat is considering acquiring a 35-per-cent ownership in Chrysler by mid-year as the first step towards the acquisition of a possible majority stake in the US company.,

The deal would give Fiat long-sought access to the US market for its small and mid-sized cars, with the Fiat 500 and Alfa Romeo reported to be at the top of the list.

Under the deal, Fiat could build its own small cars in the US and use the Chrysler distribution network. In exchange, Chrysler would tap Fiat’s expertise building small and medium-sized cars to advance its own plans for new, front-wheel-drive models with lower emissions.

As petrol prices soared and the economy stalled, sales of Chrysler’s mostly large, fuel-inefficient cars and trucks fell 30 per cent in 2008.

With auto sales at a 27-year low, Chrysler has laid off tens of thousands of workers and had to beg for government rescue financing of 5.5 billion dollars just to stay afloat for the next few months.

The loan terms require Chrysler to deliver a credible survival strategy by March, and an alliance with Fiat would be a tangible new strategy.

Fiat, which exclusively makes small cars with narrow profit margins, is struggling to keep its own head above water in Europe’s expensive labour market. (dpa)
