US man offers to swap his child for beer

London, May 19 (ANI): A man in Chicopee, Massachusetts, US, was so frantic to quench his alcohol thirst that he made an offer to swap his baby for two bottles of beer.

Matthew Brace now faces a child endangerment charge for allegedly asking to strike the deal for the three-month old baby girl.

Cops challenged 24-year-old after allegation that he made the strangest offer to a maintenance man outside a petrol station, reports the Sun.

The man called the police and they found Brace hiding with the girl behind a litterbin.

Brace was not arrested but will be summoned to court and the child has now been taken into care.

The child”s mother was inside the garage shop at the time and was not charged. (ANI)

Average Brit spends £39,480 in a lifetime getting beers in for mates!

London, May 8(ANI): The average Brit spends 39,480 pounds in a lifetime buying drinks for friends and workmates, a survey has revealed.

That means UK as a nation spends 30 billion pounds a year on beer rounds.

The men, however, take the cake. The survey by www.OnePoll.com revealed nearly a quarter of men go out twice a week, and buy rounds in groups of five. That equates to around 200 pounds a month.

“Buying rounds is a way of life in Britain and these results show us to be a very generous nation. The cost adds up and over their lifetime it amounts to a sizeable piece of their disposable income,” The Sun quoted a spokesman for the website, as saying.

The figures were calculated on a span of 47 years from age 18 to 65. (ANI)

Test debutant Harris’ ‘beer therapy’ to overcome windy Wellington ordeal

Sydney, Mar 24 (ANI): Test debutant Ryan Harris quietly celebrated Australia”s victory over New Zealand in the first Test with beer, as the team was tired facing tough windy conditions in the Wellington Test.

The 30-year-old pace bowler battled winds of up to 130km/h at Wellington’s Basin Reserve to claim match figures of 6-119 from 41 overs in Australia’s 10-wicket win.

“I am pretty tired. I haven’t played many four-day games (only one Shield game this summer for the Bulls) and never a five-day game.

“They were pretty tough conditions with the wind. It was a bit of a test but I’ve got through it now. I will be right to go on Saturday,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Harris, as saying.

“I looked after myself last night so it’s a matter now of keeping hydrating in the next couple of days, having a run around probably tomorrow or Friday, get the body moving and I should be alright.

“I had a few quiet beers but I didn’t go too hard. None of us did, we have a Test coming up. After the next Test, we have a bit of a break so I might have a few more then,” Harris added. (ANI)

New York, Mar 10 (ANI): A Manhattan man is fulfilling every alcoholic’s dream—he has pledged to drink at 365 city bars in 365 days.

Marty Wombacher, 51, is on a mission to create a poor man”s guide to New York”s watering holes.

He heads to various pubs and bars, take loads of pictures, drink lots of beer, and post the adventures on his Web site www.aguywalksinto365bars.com.

“My ideal New York bar is a dive bar with really interesting characters. If you have the coolest bar in the world, but it is filled with jerks, then you will have a rotten time. Who wants to drink in a room filled with jerks?” the New York Daily News quoted Wombacher as saying.

Wombacher, a single guy who lives alone in a W. 16th St. rent-stabilized studio, works as an ink jet operator to support his beer habit.

And his favourite drinking spot is Winnie”s Bar & Restaurant on Bayard Street in Chinatown, and the worst bar, according to Wombacher, is House of Brews on W. 46th St. (ANI)

Now, unwed Malaysian couple to be whipped for trying to have car sex

Shah Alam (Malaysia), Sep. 18 (ANI): Following the whipping episode of the Malaysian model who was sentenced for drinking beer, an unmarried couple is now being subjected to the controversial canning sentence under the country’s Sharia law for trying to have sex.

Mohammad Shahrin Abd Majid, 29, and his lover Nadiah Najat Hussin, 24, pleaded guilty to attempting to have sex in a car, were fined 5,000 ringgits or 12 months’ jail and ordered to be caned six times each, the New Strait Times Online reports.

Both Shahrin and Nadiah have paid the fine. On Wednesday, the Sharia High Court of Shah Alam granted a stay on the caning pending an appeal following an application by the couple’s counsel.

The Court has also advised both accused to marry as soon as possible.

The couple had claimed that they were to be engaged soon, and scheduled to be married in February next year.

“You are still young… after Hari Raya seek consent from both your parents to marry,” he said.

Shahrin and Nadiah would be sent to prison in order to receive the caning if their appeal gets dismissed.

Earlier, former Malaysian model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno hogged the international headlines when she was sentenced for canning under Sharia law for drinking beer at a nightclub. (ANI)

Melbourne, Sep 10 (ANI): While meeting Hollywood’s hottest hunk remains a dream for some, a passenger on a United Airlines flight was able to not only meet actor Brad Pitt but also film him.

Justin Ross Lee was fortunate enough to be seated alongside Pitt on a recent flight from Los Angeles to New York and he was able to capture the moment on his mobile phone.e has since posted the clip, showing Pitt tucking into his in-flight meal of chicken, enjoying a beer and catching some shut-eye, on brightcove.

“If Brad was any more down to earth, the jet never would have left the ground,” News.com.au quoted Lee as telling Star Magazine.

Women better beer tasters than men

Melbourne, Sep 9 (ANI): While a new brewery is all set to open in Australia’s Warnervale on the Central Coast, it is believed that more women would be hired as professional beer tasters, for they apparently make better tasters than men.

With the opening of the new Bluetongue Brewery, almost 100 jobs will be created, out of which 10 and 15 will be of full-time beer tasters, and that too without any experience.

The 120 million dollars brewery will open in late 2010, and is expected to produce enough bottles daily to stretch 109km.

And to make sure that every beer tastes right, owners are expecting that the majority of the jobs would go to women because they make better beer tasters.

“Women typically are better able to detach a smell from the object,” the Courier Mail quoted Bluetongue’s head brewer Tim Williams as saying.

Williams said that women could smell a liquid in a cup and say “strawberry” whereas men “have to see the strawberry”.

Unlike wine, beer tasters must swallow.

“A lot of beer’s bitter characters are detected at the back of the throat,” Mr said Williams. (ANI)

Binge drinking gives men a bigger beer belly than regular tipple

London, Sept 2 (ANI): Five pints of beer in an evening can have greater effect on men’s waist size than a regular tipple, suggests a British study.

The researchers found that men who binged had a waist size 2.3 inches (6cm) bigger than men who drank the same overall amount of alcohol but spread it out across the week.

It has been shown that abdominal fat can be more dangerous for the heart than fat carried around the bottom. It has also been linked to diabetes and heart disease.

However, in women the effect was even more pronounced, with binge drinkers having a waist four inches (10cm) bigger than non-bingers.

“Abdominal obesity is an important risk factor for diabetes and for cardiovascular disease,” the Telegraph quoted Prof Martin Bobak, professor of epidemiology at University College London, as saying.

“The finding that binge drinking is related to abdominal obesity is therefore important for our understanding of the link between heavy drinking and these diseases,” he added.

The findings were presented at the European Society of Cardiology in Barcelona. (ANI)

Vettori’s new role as a national selector will not hurt team: Mills

Wellington, Sep 2 (ANI): New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Mills doubts that skipper Daniel Vettori’s new role as a national selector will harm his relationship with the players.

Vettori and head coach Andy Moles officially became members of the four-man selection panel on Tuesday after New Zealand Cricket (NZC) heeded the duo’s desire for a more hands-on role in team selection.

Mills has already had the dreaded talk with Vettori and suggested the skipper’s standing among the group would not create problems when the axe fell.

On the eve of the first test against Australia in Brisbane last November, the fast bowler was told not only did he miss the team, but he was also being sent back to provincial cricket.

“I think that’s the hardest thing as a captain. I’ve been given the word by Dan before on previous tours. In Australia, he came up and told me I’d been dropped from the test side so he’s made those gutsy conversations,” Stuff.co.nz quoted Vettori, as saying.

“At the end of the day, I’d probably rather hear it from him than someone else I’ve played a lot of cricket with him from a young age, he’s a mate of mine and we still go for a beer,” he added.

Mills was also happy the tour finally had two selectors on board.

The NZC decision to appoint Vettori and Moles alongside convener Glenn Turner and Mark Greatbatch has been highly scrutinised since the announcement on August 23.

Concerns over Vettori’s new role centred on how his working relationship might change with players now he has an official say in their selection or demotion, Stuff.co.nz reported.

There were also fears about how the added responsibility would affect his workload and performance.

When he was appointed, Vettori admitted it could be difficult when he or Moles had to convey bad news. (ANI)

‘Twittering’, ‘hmm’, and ‘heh’ make it to Collins English Dictionary

London, Aug 31 (ANI): ‘Twittering’, ‘hmm’, and ‘heh’ are among the 267 words that have been added to this year’s Collins English Dictionary, all thanks to teenagers who use such words on social networking websites.

With teenagers increasingly using these grunts and sighs in words on Twitter and other such websites, the need to find spellings for sounds that were traditionally used only in speech has also spawned “meh” (an expression of dissatisfaction) and “mwah” (the sound of a noisy kiss).

Users of social networking sites may also be responsible for the resurgence of “heigh-ho” or “hey-ho” – an exclamation of weariness, disappointment, surprise or happiness – that went out of fashion in the early 20th century.

In fact, Twitter-the microblogging site that allows people to communicate in messages of 140 characters or less-has also been accepted as a verb by the dictionary to describe the act of using Twitter.

Other internet-derived terms include “noob” (short for newbie, a term for someone unfamiliar with web etiquette) and “woot” (an expression of joy conveying a sense of achievement).

New abbreviations used for convenience in text messages such as “OMG” (short for “oh, my God”) “soz” (short for sorry) and wtf (short for “what the f***?”) are also included in the dictionary.

Some new words in the dictionary could make many traditionalists cringe in their seats-new portmanteau words purporting to describe a new trend include “staycation” (a combination of stay and vacation, meaning to take a holiday without going abroad) and “glamping” (glamorous camping).

“Buzzkillers” (someone who stops other people from enjoying themselves), and “beer o’clock” (a time considered appropriate to start drinking) may also take many traditionalists by surprise.

“English is very good at absorbing new words. [But] in three or four years a lot of these words may have fallen out of use and might well come out of the dictionary,” Times Online quoted Elaine Higgleton, the Editorial Director for Collins, as saying. (ANI)

‘Lucky’ Nannes dangles between Delhi and Victoria

New Delhi, Aug 30(ANI): Delhi Daredevil cricketer Dirk Nannes, who has been in the news for his alliance with numerous teams, has said that he considers himself lucky for the opportunities that he has been enjoying.

“I guess I’ve been lucky and bowled pretty well a couple of times and it’s been a pretty exciting journey,” The Age quoted Nannes, as saying.

“I just want to try and stay on the park as long as I can. The more I stay on the park the better I bowl,” he added.

Nannes was the only player caught in a bidding war between his Indian Premier League (IPL) team Delhi Daredevils and his home team Victoria Bushrangers for the Champions League, which is scheduled for October.

Though the Daredevils won bid due to a contractual clause, which gives preference to the IPL, but Daredevils will have to compensate Bushrangers with 200,000 dollars, keeping the three million dollar first prize money in mind.

“I’d signed an agreement with Delhi so I didn’t really have a choice. It’s an awkward situation for sure, but cricket is a funny game,” Nannes said.

“In the last 12 months I’ve played for six sides or something like that, so we’re all used to playing against each other. We’ll have a beer afterwards and we’ll go back and play together back home,” he added. (ANI)

London, Aug 30 (ANI): ‘American Fritzl’ Phillip Garrido held sickening orgies in the same filthy compound where he kept Jaycee Lee Dugard as his sex slave for 18 years and fathered two children with her, it has been revealed.

Mike Rogers, whose home backs on to the convicted rapist’s backyard, said: “At the time I didn’t know what was in his garden. I really tried to keep out of his business.

“But when one of his parties was excessively loud I peered through the fence and yelled for them to keep the noise down.

“What I saw was not normal. Eight to ten men, mostly Mexican, would gather in a line in his garden drinking beer, yelling and screaming and swearing.

“They normally had a bonfire and I saw them entering the tent one by one. On a number of occasions I saw them bobbing up and down through the window and I thought, ‘My God, there is something sexual going on in there.

“I thought they had a prostitute or something in there. I thought it might have been some kind of sex party or something,” he added.

The orgies were a frequent event, reports News of the World.

“They were different men each time. I just hope that sicko wasn’t pimping out Jaycee or those children. The thought makes me sick,” Rogers said.

Rogers, who lived next to Garrido for four years, said that while he was disturbed by what was happening he did not feel he had enough evidence to alert police. (ANI)

Now, a ‘patch’ to mend broken hearts

London, Aug 25 (ANI): Scientists in Israel have developed a ‘patch’ from heart muscle that can be used to fix scarring left over from a heart attack.

The researchers showed that the technique strengthened the hearts of rats that had suffered heart attacks, reports the BBC.

The ‘patch’ was grown in abdominal tissue first, then transplanted to damaged areas of the heart.

This is the first experiment to show that such patches can actually improve the health of a heart after it has been damaged.

The researchers measured an increase in the size of the muscle in damaged areas, and improved conduction of the electrical impulses needed for the heart to pump normally.

Heart attacks usually cause irreversible damage to heart muscle. If people survive, then the damaged muscle can cause another serious condition called heart failure.

The researchers, led by Tal Dvir from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beer-Sheva, hope that the procedure may eventually lead to treatments in humans because of its “simplicity and safety”.

However, they added “because most patients with heart attacks are old, and multiple surgery can pose a large risk to them, our strategy is not currently an option”.

The study has been described in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). (ANI)

Different types of booze impact desire for food differently

Melbourne, August 25 (ANI): The type of alcoholic drink you consume may have an impact on your desire for food, suggests an Australian study.

Dr. Anna Kokavec, a research psychologist at La Trobe University in Bendigo, found that the additional nutritional content of various alcoholic beverages influence the body’s reaction to alcohol, reports ABC Science.

The lead author, along with her team, measured the effect of red wine, white wine, light beer or regular beer on the hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis, which is responsible for the synthesis of the steroid hormones cortisol and dehyrdoepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS).

Kokavec said that DHEAS and cortisol, commonly known as a stress hormone, influence appetite, adding: “We need a sufficient release of cortisol to make us feel hungry.”

She found that cortisol levels went down in participants after the consumption of alcohol, and decreased their appetite despite having fasted for half a day.

But DHEAS levels varied depending on what type of alcohol was consumed.

The DHEAS levels initially took a dip for those who took beer before going up, resulting in an eventual increase in hunger.

Kokavec said: “Beer completely confuses the system.”

Consumption of red wine was also observed to have led to an increased appetite.

But, unlike beer and red wine, white wine completely switched off the HPA axis, indicating hunger remained low.

The study has been published in the journal Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behaviour. (ANI)

Sources have revealed that Sam started to feel uncomfortable when they went to the players’ bar for a tipple at the end of play.

A source said: “He was taking it all in his stride until they went to the bar. It was then when he started to look really uncomfortable with the attention she was getting. She was the talk of the dressing room because of all the stuff she’s been saying about the team.”

Lily is also said to have turned her affections towards champion bowler Stuart Broad on Twitter.

She Twittered: “Stuart Broad is fast becoming my favourite England cricketer. OMG. Broad is a genius. And he doesn’t have a beer gut.”

Teens exposed to too much alcohol advertising on cable TV

Washington, Aug 21 (ANI): A new US study has revealed that ads for beer, spirits and ‘alcopop’ are frequently aired when more teens were watching television.

This is the first study to demonstrate an association between ad placement and teen cable TV viewership.

“Alcohol advertisers have pledged to avoid audiences made up of more than 30 percent underage viewers – such as children’s programming,” said David H. Jernigan, director of the Centre on Alcohol Marketing and Youth and an associate professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

“However, many other shows have adolescent appeal. This research suggests that ads are aimed at groups that include a disproportionate number of teens and that the alcohol industry’s voluntary self-monitoring is not working to reduce adolescent exposure to ads,” he added.

The study showed that audiences with a higher percentage of youth between the ages of 12 and 20 were exposed to a higher frequency of alcohol ads, even after accounting for other factors that might explain ad placement decisions.

Each 1-percentage-point increase in adolescent viewership was associated with a 7-percent increase in beer ads, a 15-percent increase in spirits ads and a 22-percent increase in ads for low-alcohol refreshers/alcopops – flavored alcoholic beverages that taste similar to juice or soda.

However, wine ads decreased by 8 percent with each 1-percentage-point increase in adolescent viewership.

This finding suggests that alcohol advertisers can, in fact, successfully avoid adolescent audiences.

“This study did not examine whether alcohol advertisers are intentionally overexposing adolescents,” said lead study author Dr. Paul J. Chung, assistant professor of pediatrics at Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA and a senior natural scientist at the RAND Corp.

“The alcohol industry has consistently denied actively targeting teens, and our study isn’t designed to test that claim. However, the ultimate effect of their advertising strategies, intentional or not, appears to be greater exposure than might be expected if adults were the sole targets of ads,” he added.

The study appears online in American Journal of Public Health. (ANI)

London, Aug.19 (ANI): England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff has said that winning The Ashes this summer would be the greatest feat of his career.

Recalling England’s epic 2005 Ashes triumph, Flintoff, who scored 402 runs, took 24 wickets and was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year, said the difference back then was England believed they would win.

Now, as they head in the Fifth Test decider at The Oval tomorrow, he says the team’s expectations are lower because of the change and turmoil in the ranks.

England has had two coaches and four captains since June last year.

“If we win this one, it will be a far greater achievement than 2005. Our win then was fantastic but the side had performed well over a period of time and beaten everyone in the world.

We played Australia expecting to win. I’m not saying we’re not expecting to do it this time but the side has changed a heck of a lot over the past 12 months,” The Sun quoted Flintoff, as saying.

England was then protecting a 2-1 lead, but this time they are locked at 1-1 and Australia only need a draw to retain the little urn.

It is England’s biggest must-win match for a generation.

“Now, I’m just pleased to be here with an opportunity to play on Thursday – it is going to be an unbelievably good game,” Flintoff said,

He is sure to be given a rousing send-off because there is no player who enjoys a closer rapport with the fans. They view him as one of their own – a big lad with talent who enjoys a beer and a night out. (ANI)

Sensory ‘sweet-tooth’ to make ‘E-tongue’ more human-like

Washington, Aug 18 (ANI): Scientists in Illinois have given sweet-tooth a “sensory” makeover by developing a small, inexpensive, lab-on-a-chip sensor that quickly and accurately identifies sweetness – an advancement that provides a new approach to an effective “electronic tongue”.

The scientific breakthrough can identify with 100 percent accuracy the full sweep of natural and artificial sweet substances, including 14 common sweeteners, using easy-to-read color markers.

The sensory “sweet-tooth” shows special promise as a simple quality control test that food processors can use to ensure that soda pop, beer, and other beverages taste great, – with a consistent, predictable flavor.

The study has been described at the American Chemical Society’s 238th National Meeting.

The new sensor, which is about the size of a business card, can also identify sweeteners used in solid foods such as cakes, cookies, and chewing gum.

In the future, doctors and scientists could use modified versions of the sensor for a wide variety of other chemical-sensing applications ranging from monitoring blood glucose levels in people with diabetes to identifying toxic substances in the environment, the researchers say.

“We take things that smell or taste and convert their chemical properties into a visual image,” says study leader Kenneth Suslick, Ph.D., of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

“This is the first practical “electronic tongue” sensor that you can simply dip into a sample and identify the source of sweetness based on its color,” the researchers added.

The research team has spent a decade developing “colorimetric sensor arrays” that may fit the bill. The “lab-on-a-chip” consists of a tough, glass-like container with 16 to 36 tiny printed dye spots, each the diameter of a pencil lead. The chemicals in each spot react with sweet substances in a way that produces a color change. The colors vary with the type of sweetener present, and their intensity varies with the amount of sweetener.

The sensor identified 14 different natural and artificial sweeteners, including sucrose (table sugar), xylitol (used in sugarless chewing gum), sorbitol, aspartame, and saccharin with 100 percent accuracy in 80 different trials. (ANI)

Visually impaired bamboo artist enables others for self-reliance

Gangtok, July 15 (ANI): A visually impaired bamboo artisan in Sikkim imparts training to many other disadvantaged people like him and help them gain self-reliance in life.

The 37-year-old Chandra Singh Gurung is one of the visually challenged workers offering training to enthusiastic artists under Directorate of handloom and industry in Cane and Bamboo crafts.

Gurung is a master bamboo and cane artist. He has been working in the bamboo and cane unit of the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handlooms for over a decade and has set an example of self-reliance.

The principal handicrafts of the region include basketwork, cane furniture, bamboo flower, mats and woodcarvings. The items which are made include stools, flowers, pen stands, picture frames, baskets, dust bins, beer mugs, hair clips and butterfly wall decoration.

Having learnt the art of Moda making (cane or bamboo stools) at the Kalimpong Salvation Army Institution, the Braille matriculate Gurung joined the Directorate as an artisan in 1986.

He tells that Government has opened many schemes for the people like him where they could learn the art as per their talent.

“Indian Government has opened many schemes for the people like us. I’m doing this cane and bamboo work in Sikkim. Others can go in for light engineering while still others can take up physiotherapy as per their talent,” said Gurung.

Every ‘moda’ Gurung makes sells at anything between 9.24 dollars to 10.27 dollars a piece.

Gurung is today not just a worker but a trainer as well and has trained jail inmates at the state prison in Rongyek, near Gangtok.

Namrata Thapa, directorate of Handicraft and Handloom Industry, Sikkim said that in this institute the students could earn while they learnt.

“This is the institute where we are providing employment opportunities to the physically handicapped people as far as possible not only the employment opportunities but we are giving them training in different crafts also as per their aptitude in their fields that they are interested to pursue,” said Thapa.
