Star-cast of ‘Mohandas’ visits Rajghat

New Delhi, Aug. 28 (ANI): The star cast of the upcoming Bollywood film ‘Mohandas’ visited Rajghat, the memorial of Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi here on Friday.

The movie is the directorial debut of cinematographer Mazhar Kamran who has been part of the creative teams of famous Bollywood films such as ‘Satya’ and ‘Jhankar Beats’.

The film is about identity theft, and the simpler escapades of a man who shares the Mahatama’s name ‘Mohandas’, and has to deal with this unusual situation.

Bollywood actor Nakul Vaid plays the protagonist.

“The film is about theft of identity. There are many layers in the film…we talk about the system, about ideologies and many related issues, but the main story is on identity,” said Nakul.

Although the movie is not a biographical saga of Mahatma Gandhi, it only derives inspiration from his thoughts.

“It is not directly about Gandhi, but his ideologies and thinking reflect in the movie in various ways. Gandhi is not physically present in the movie, it is not biographical,” noted Kamran.

The film talks about various contemporary issues, existential and otherwise.

“It is about identity crisis, it is about the corruption, not in our country but generally amongst human beings, it is about identity crisis…it is about how confused we are to be ourselves,” opined actor Sonali Kulkarni, playing the role of a journalist, Meghna, in the film.

‘Mohandas’ also features talented actors like Sushant Singh, Sharbani Mukherjee, Sameer Dharmadhikari and Govind Namdeo

There have been both Hollywood and Bollywood movies made earlier, based either on the life of Mahatama Gandhi or inspired by his philosophy of Ahimsa and non-violence.

The most famous amongst these was Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’ and Rajkumar Hirani’s ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ and ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’. (ANI)

Punjab’s honey train beats recession

Ludhiana, April 30 (ANI): Punjab is predominantly an agricultural state and offers various opportunities to agro-based industries.

The leader among honey producers in the country is Doraha-based Kashmir apiaries exports.

The Kashmir apiaries are sending consignments of processed honey to 15 countries.t is a major achievement by Kashmir Apiaries Exports, which is targeting 100 per cent growth in the current fiscal through export of honey to Europe and Africa.
It is already exporting processed honey to 45 countries and is confident about raising its turnover from 43.6 million dollars in last fiscal to 80 million dollars in 2009-10.

India’s exports have been affected by the economic downturn but the ‘honey train’ comes as a morale booster.

“It was our dream project to send a train, which carries honey from Punjab to Europe, America and the Middle East. About 90 containers of honey have been loaded in the train, which will be sent to around 15 countries across the world. So, we have named it the ‘Honey Train’ and given it a slogan ‘Honey Train Beats Recession’. At this time of recession, when India’s exports have dipped by 35 percent, we are planning to provide a new direction to India’s agriculture and horticulture by sending out the honey train,” said Shahzada Singh, Director of the Kashmir Apiaries Exports.

India produces a total of 70,000 tons of honey every year, of which 25,000 tons is exported the world over.

Punjab’s contribution to Honey export is 5,500 tons, of which 3,000 tons worth three million dollars are exported to the U.S., UK, Europe and West Asia.

And Punjab-based Kashmir Apiaries Exports has made a significant contribution to overseas sales. At present we have about 25,000 colonies and in the coming years we are planning to increase them to 100,000-200,000 to boost our production. We are also training beekeepers, so that they can produce better quality of honey. We have laboratories, where experts test honey before exporting it abroad. Europe’s specifications are very strict and we have to send honey, which meets those specifications and matches their quality parameters. We are supplying antibiotic free honey to them,” said Jagjit Singh, Managing Direcetor, Kashmir Apiaries Exports.

“According to me, there is huge potential in agro-based industries and I believe that we have only tapped one to two per cent. The industry has immense prospects. Till now, India has been exporting raw material but I think the time has come when we should start processing and packaging our products to sell it directly in global market. India offers good raw material, which it can export after processing and packaging,” said Shahzada Singh, Director of the Kashmir Apiaries Exports.

The company’s backbone comprises a nationwide network involving thousands of small honey producers.

It sells honey sells under four brand names and 140-odd private labels, placing it among the world’s top five honey processors.

Kashmir Apiaries has been able to boost its exports by importing technology to improve quality. And, it plans to export its products to 100 countries by 2010 and market high-value byproducts like royal jelly and bee venom. By Karan Kapoor (ANI)

`Turbo-booster’ for heart patients may make transplants a thing of the past

Wellington, Apr 22 (ANI): Heart transplants may soon be history following the creation of a device that helps the heart pump blood more effectively.

William Peters, 43, calls the C-Pulse heart assist system a “turbo-booster” for people who have severe problems with their ticker.

“It’s for people whose pacemakers have failed them but they still have symptoms of heart failure,” he told NZPA.

The heart surgeon started designing the device about 10-years ago, tinkering with a prototype in his garage.

The C-Pulse has since been refined so it now successfully improves circulation and increases blood to the heart muscle. It does not come into contact with blood so it could be turned on and off.

“So it’s a true heart assist device as opposed to a heart replacement device,” Peters said.

The device is a bio-stable polyester fabric that wraps around the 3-5cm wide main aorta; a sensor is then attached to the heart to pick up its beats. In between the fabric wrap and the aorta is a small polyurethane balloon that inflates and deflates, which helps to pump the blood.

The balloon is attached to a gas line that comes through the skin and could be connected to a small external driver worn by the patient.

“They can wear it in a bag or a pocket, or bling it up,” Peters said.

The pump could also be detached, the expert added.

“You’ve just lost your super-boost,” he said.

“It’s a one to two-hour procedure, it doesn’t require the heart-lung machine, there’s no holes made in the heart, there’s no blood contact and it’s very straight forward to implant. So from those aspects it’s very low risk,” Peters said. (ANI)

Punjab celebrates harvest festival Baisakhi

Amritsar, Apr 13 (ANI): The Sikh community on Monday celebrated the annual spring harvest festival of Baisakhi.

Farmers, dressed in colourful attires, danced to ‘Bhangra’ beats in middle of the fields.

Throughout the year, farmers work hard for good crop yields and during the harvest festival of Baisakhi, they dance and make merry.

After the celebrations, the farmers start cutting the crop.

“From today, crops are being cut. Baisakhi has its own importance in Punjab as the labourers have work at hand. With the wages which they get, they celebrate and make merry,” said Sukhjinder Singh, a farmer.

Several Indian festivals coincide during the harvest time and Baisakhi is one of them. It is celebrated in North India, particularly in Punjab, when the Rabi crop is ready for arvesting. (ANI)

Jennifer Hawkins’ Oz neighbours call in cops to stop all night partying

Melbourne, Jan 7 (ANI): Aussie beauty queen Jennifer Hawkins has managed to get on the nerves of some of her new Coogee neighbours with her all night partying.

Hawkins, 25, who paid 2.2 million dollars for her new pad in Sydney in November and moved in last month, has been having fun non-stop during the festive season.

According to the Daily Telegraph, a neighbour, who has had enough of the noise, said that he was organising a meeting with other concerned citizens, especially after the latest party ended at 6am, with the police being called in to quieten things down.

“Jennifer Hawkins has been keeping her Coogee neighbours up all night with loud parties and her newly-acquired property has not been quiet over the New Year period,” News.com.au quoted the neighbour, who wanted anonymity, as saying.

“The neighbourhood reverberates to unending beats and high screams and cries pierce the air – neighbours are finding it hard to come to terms with this.

“Perhaps she should have bought further north up the coast at Bondi – a location which would have better suited party princesses,” the neighbour said.

But other neighbours were not so much against Hawkins, and were very understanding, and one even complained of not seeing her enough.

“I wouldn”t comment about my neighbours good or bad – why would you?” one said.

“She just comes out, hops in her car and drives away,” an elderly lady across the road said.

Hawkins” manager Sean Anderson was surprised about the publishing of the story.

“If I had a noise problem with a neighbour I would knock on their front door and speak to them about it,” he said.

He also added that Hawkins would not upset people deliberately. (ANI)
