Shopping and sweet nothings in Istanbul’s Grand Bazar

Istanbul, June 6 (IANS) ‘Hey, Miss India, you’ve taken my heart!’… ‘You can take my heart and my soul too, it is all yours’ – Turkish men, especially the shopkeepers, sure know how to flatter women customers.

In Istanbul’s dazzling maze of around 4,000 shops at Grand Bazar, flattering endearments by shopkeepers chase you as you trip through the lanes and by-lanes, dumbfounded by the display of artefacts and knick-knacks.

Haggling is a pre-requisite at Grand Bazar, this visiting IANS correspondent is warned by a tour guide as the vehicle pulls up outside one of the four main gates of the bazaar, located right next to a hammam.

Attractive silver jewellery inlaid with turquoise and other gems catches your eye at one of the hundreds of shops. ‘How much?’ you ask, pointing to a thin chain with a pendant.

’60 Lira,’ the young shopkeeper replies. And while your mind is quickly calculating – 60 x 30 (Rs.30 is worth one Lira – that is the exchange rate), you can’t help noticing the young man appreciating your long skirt with Indian motifs and noticing your kohl-lined eyes.

‘What happened?’ he asks, as you politely walk away. ‘Too much, the price is too much,’ you say. ‘You from India?’ he asks, and you nod.

‘Turkey, India friends,’ he says clasping his hands together. ‘You say how much, and I will come down (meaning he will lower his price). But you have already decided against it. ‘Omigosh, Rs.1,800 for that thin necklace, I can get better ones in Delhi,’ you think while shaking your head, showing you are not interested.

‘Miss India, wait…wait, take my heart, but don’t go. Let’s talk, I come down 5 Lira, Ok, Ok? , he says.

‘No, No,’ you say, your mind is already made up. It is far too expensive.

‘Ok, I come down 10 Lira,’ he calls after you. But, you’ve already made your escape into another lane. In India, such sweet nothings would be frowned upon.

Another shop displays wall hangings of the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. But Turkish men are gallant by nature and such flattery is accepted.

‘Ah, just the thing I was looking for,’ you think, stopping at a shop selling souvenirs. There is a whole long list of knick-knacks you have to buy for folks back home.

‘How much?’ you ask, pointing to a medium-sized wall hanging of the Blue Mosque with a big ‘nazar boncugu’, or Turkish evil eye, hanging below. ’20 Lira,’ the shopkeeper replies promptly.

‘Too much’, you say and prepare to walk away.

‘Wait, madam,’ he calls, just as you knew he would. ‘Well then, how much?’ you ask, and he replies, ’17 Lira, madam’. ‘I’ll give 10 Lira,’ you say, and he agrees after a while of futile arguing.

‘Wow, what a bargain,’ you are just complimenting yourself, walking away with two of them neatly packed in a plastic packet, when you espy similar wall hangings at another shop in the next lane.

Just for curiosity, you go up and ask, ‘How much?’ and the answer stumps you – ’10 Lira, madam. But I am willing to come down if you want to buy!’

Another shop selling pretty Turkish pottery catches one’s eye. A yellow bowl with blue designs is especially eye-catching. Asked the price, the young man, in his early 20s, says 90 Lira.

Seeing you walk away, he says immediately, ‘How much will you give?’ ‘Not more than 30 Lira,’ you venture brazenly.

He laughingly says, ‘Take my heart, my soul, take me instead..’ and as you embarrassedly walk away, he says, businesslike, ‘See I can give you something else for that money.’ Seeing you walk away, he breaks into song.

By the time you are done shopping in Istanbul, you begin to accept and even expect the sweet nothings as a part of speech.

Grand Bazar has rows and rows of shops selling things ranging from hand-painted ceramics, carpets, embroideries, spices and antique shops. And its men are sure to make you smile!

Manipuri women protest against proposed visit of Naga leader

Imphal, May 14 (ANI): Around 1,000 women staged a sit-in protest here on Thursday against the visit of National Socialist Council of Nagalim”s (Isak-Muivah) leader, Thuingaleng Muivah, to the state.

The protest was carried out by the Advanced Women Society at the Awang Sekmai Bazaar in Imphal.

After the sit-in protest, the women took out a rally in Sekmai area shouting slogans against Muivah”s visit.

“We are opposing Muivah”s attempt to enter Manipur with an intention to destroy Manipur. We are expressing our anger. We have decided to close down all our business establishments and have stopped our daily errands as well. And so we have been staging today”s sit-in protest,” said Memcha Devi, a protestor.

The protestors also allege that Muivah”s homecoming is only a ploy to cause communal crisis in the state.

“Even though he was born in Manipur, he has never spoken for Manipur and instead supports Nagaland. He has made Manipur suffer a lot,” said Amubi Devi, secretary of Advanced Women Society.

Earlier, violent clashes between Muivah”s supporters and security forces at the border town of Mao resulted in the death of two women protestors and left over 50 others injured.

The NSCN-IM had agreed to a ceasefire in August 1997 and launched a peace process with the Central Government to bring an end to the longest-running insurgency in India.
The rebel group has participated in several rounds of talks with central officials since the start of the ceasefire.

But talks between the two sides have not made progress over the rebels”” main demand of unification and eventual independence of Naga-dominated areas in northeast India. (ANI)

On the run, Pakistan militants find new haven

Islamabad, Apr. 22 (ANI): Having been chased out of South Waziristan, foreign militants, including Arabs, Chechens and Uzbeks, are reportedly establishing a new base farther north under the protection of an insurgent leader.

Gul Bahadur, the insurgent leaderin question, is said to have the complete backing of the Pakistan Army, according to residents and militants.

In North Waziristan, these so-called gun-toting “VIP” fighters when not engaged with security forces or undertaking an attack on a pre-determined target, spend their time roaming markets, frequenting restaurants and watching jihadi movies or surfing the web at Internet cafes.

Their presence in North Waziristan has reportedly put the Pakistan Army under pressure to launch an offensive there. Its agreement with Bahadur not to attack territory under his control appears to be backfiring, enabling militants whom Islamabad sees as a security threat to regroup on Bahadur’s lands.

Critics say the army is reluctant to sever alliances with militant factions fighting just across the border in Afghanistan, believing they will one day serve Pakistan’s interests.

That makes North Waziristan an enticing destination for extremists.

It is reported that North Waziristan’s major towns, Mir Ali and Miran Shah, are in the grip of the Pakistan Taliban. The latter has even set up a command and control center in Mir Ali’s bazaar to communicate with other groups in the tribal belt through radio.

Tribal customs and traditions believe in extending support to fellow brothers, and are not really bothered by threats of a security offensive even if the persons they support are linked to the Pakistan Taliban.

The Pakistan Army is not clearly stating whether it is backing warlord Bahadur, but security analysts and residents say there is a truce of some sort in the region.

The United States has praised Pakistan for its actions against the Taliban in the northwest over the last 18 months, but believes it has to do more. (ANI)

Rawalpindi cops enjoy watching women being eve-teased

Islamabad, Sep 14 (ANI): A number of women shoppers in Pakistan have come out with complaints that eve teasing is on the rise in markets and bazaars, and that the police enjoy watching it happening.

With Eid just around the corner, the markets and bazaars are crowded with shoppers, but there are hardly any policemen to control the crowd, and to see that men visiting the areas are accompanied by females.

A majority of eve teasing and purse-snatching cases have gone unreported, as families dislike visiting the police stations not only to save their reputation, but also to save themselves from police harassment.

According to the police data last week over 20 women were deprived of handbags and shopping bags.

Young men start walking with families in the crowded Moti Bazaar and tease women, especially young girls, who felt shy to bring such incidents to the notice of their family members.

Tench Bazaar had already been encroached by the stallholders and the Eid rush had added to the problems of the Eid shoppers.

“A group of young men gathered around a stall of fake jewellery and bangles at Commercial Market, Satellite Town, and harassed girls, and this is a common practice,” the Daily Times quoted Adeeba as saying.

She said if someone wanted to lodge a complaint, they had to search for the police giving enough time to the eve teasers to escape from the scene.

A woman shopper, who was visiting a Bank Road shopping centre, complained that male police officials deployed at the bazaar and markets also enjoyed seeing women teased, chased and harassed.

A police official said that City Police Officer (CPO) Rao Muhammad Iqbal had directed the Cantonment Police Station to set up a public complaint cell on Bank Road for quick action on complaints.

He said three policewomen had been deployed at each gate of Moti Bazaar to check the entry of men, however, the plain fact was that not a single policeman was seen at any gate. (ANI)
