SWAGs bare all to help war heroes

Melbourne, April 21 (ANI): Service Wives and Girlfriends (SWAGs) have raised 26,000pounds through their racy charity calendar to help injured war heroes and women wounded in strife-torn Afghanistan and Iraq.

The effort saw 50 wives and girlfriends of men from the three Armed Services, stripping off to be snapped at bases and training centres in Hampshire.

However, they were careful enough to save their modesty by strategically placing pieces of military equipment.

Kelly Monk, 20, whose boyfriend Andrew Mason, 21, serves in the 2nd Battalion the Princess of Wales”s Regiment, came up with the idea for the shoot.

“I got together with Andrew”s sister, Sam, to do the shoot and it just snowballed from there,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Kelly, as saying

She added: “We were nervous at first, but then we really started enjoying it and everyone had a laugh. My boyfriend is fine with it.

“He knows that it”s for a good cause.”

Lisa Fellows-Patel, 43, said: “An old schoolfriend is in the Army and was posted to Afghanistan.

“I felt the only way I could truly support him from home was to do charity work for Help For Heroes and as I model for fun a girlfriend suggested I help with the calendar.”

“The night before, I was extremely nervous but told myself that if the armed forces are overseas fighting on my behalf I would have the courage to get naked and do my bit,” she added. (ANI)

Remains of WWI diggers identified as brothers

Two relatives of a New South Wales south coast man have been discovered buried in a mass war grave at Fromelles in France.

Shane Tough, from Basin View, says he recently received a call from the Department of Defence with the news.

Two brothers of Mr Tough’s great-grandmother were killed in World War I while serving in the 53rd Battalion.

He says despite his grandmother spending years documenting family history, the discovery came as a surprise.

“It was amazing. I just felt a real sense of being proud about the guys that went over there as Australian fighters and soldiers and in particular those guys that I was related to them,” he said.

Mr Tough says the bodies have been reburied and several family members have been invited to their memorial.

“There will be an inaugural ceremony rightfully fitting for all the soldiers on the 19th of July this year,” he said.

CRPF organises drug de-addiction camp in Jammu

Kathua (J-K), Mar 30 (ANI): In its special drive against drug abuse, the 121 battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is organising a seven-day drug de-addiction camp in Jammu and Kashmir”s Kathua District.

The aim of the camp, being organised in association with the Ministry of Home Affairs, was to fight social evils in the society and to educate the masses, especially the youth about the ills of drug-abuse.

In this connection, a special rally was taken out on Monday in which students from various educational institutions participated.

V K Tiwari, second-in-command, 121 battalion, CRPF said: “The root cause of militancy is drugs. If the youth choose the wrong path then they get involved in crimes and drug abuse, which in turn gives rise to militancy. So we thought as we fight militancy, why not fight this evil as well. Moreover, the main source of funding of militancy is drugs and it”s more dangerous than militancy to our society”.

A special check-up camp is also being organised wherein doctors are giving free counselling to the drug-affected youth.

BSF deploys women guards on Pakistan border in Punjab

Ferozepur (Punjab), Sep 11 (ANI): The Border Security Force (BSF) deployed the first batch of women guards on Pakistan border in Punjab.

The move would make foolproof body frisking at border check posts and farms lying across the border fence, said an official.

“The wives of our farmers cross the fencing at the border to carry out farming activities. We need to frisk them while going and coming back, which our male constables cannot do. So we have appointed women constables so that the security angle can be covered,” said H.S. Garcha, Commandant, 43 Battalion, BSF, Ferozepur.

These personnel have been given training in weapon handling, intelligence gathering, border management, unarmed combat, frisking and guard duties.

“I was always interested in joining the armed forces, I also had NCC in my college. Since then I had this in mind that if given an opportunity, I would definitely do something like this. I always wanted to wear this uniform,” said Randeep Ranju, a BSF constable.

BSF formed its first women’s battalion when 178 recruits passed out of the BSF’s Subsidiary Training Centre at Kharga near Hoshiarpur on July 25.

BSF plans to induct 35,000 women guards in the paramilitary force in the next four years. (ANI)

New ‘Taliban killer’ sights for British troopers on Afghanistan frontier

London, Sep 9(ANI): After reports of British soldiers facing weapons’ shortage in the Afghanistan frontier, a range of new thermal weapons’ sights has been launched to enable soldiers to dominate the battlefield in Afghanistan.

According to reports, the British Ministry of Defence will buy almost 11,000 new sights for 150 million pounds, allowing the Army to equip 95 infantry companies of more than 100 men.

As part of the Ministry of Defence’s Future Integrated Soldier Technology (Fist) programme troops have been issued with a small glass prism-like sight, which project a red laser dot. It would help a soldier to quickly align the red dot on an enemy who is very close and hit him with guaranteed accuracy.

“This means the infantryman can pick up the enemy coming in. At night the enemy’s field craft has to be pretty adept because he has to remain in dead ground all the way up to your position and that is hard yards. This will allow us to dominate the night,” The Telegraph quoted Col Bill Pointing, a former battalion commander in charge of the project, as saying.

“This will allow the infantry to operate quicker, better, at longer range, at night and in difficult weather conditions,” he added.

It will provide improved protection, day and night surveillance and target acquisition, and assistance with navigation, command and control and battle preparation.

The new thermal weapons’ sights would also allow soldiers to conduct surveillance and engage targets in all weather and light levels, including zero light where normal night sights would be rendered ineffective.

“There is a considerable improvement in terms of us infantry engaging the Taliban at very close quarters in the villages of Afghanistan, especially at night time. It will help us to put very effective fire into them,” said Cpl Ciaran Hanna of the Irish Guards. (ANI)

Manipur police personnel behind Imphal bomb attack

Imphal (Manipur), Sep 6 (ANI): In an astonishing revelation, the India Reserve Battalion (IRB) was involved in a bomb attack at a private hospital in Imphal, leaving Manipuris flabbergasted.

It is reported that militants gave Rs 5000 to an IRB rifleman to set off a grenade at the Chamber of Commerce Hospital at Thangal Bazaar in Imphal that left three persons injured.

The rifleman was identified as T. Munal, and has been apprehended by the police.

“There will be a strict control room exclusively for the commandos, so that the control room will have details about their duties and there will be a general diary which will give record of what all activities they are doing. With this sort of things and a little more check, I think with that we should be able to weed out those black sheep,” said Y. Joykumar Singh, The Director General of Police (DGP) of Manipur.

T. Munal was posted at the Battalion headquarters at Khuman Lampak in Imphal and was allegedly involved in several other attacks carried out in the state.

Munal has disclosed that a cadre of KCP (MC) militant outfit had given him the hand grenade.

The incident has shocked the people in the state. They condemned the act.

“Security forces protect us but if they do such things, the people of Manipur will be no more. We condemn the act,” said Zathlingthang, a local.

“They are here to protect the people and a rifleman committing such crime is condemnable act. The people of the state are suffering because of such crimes,” added Khomi, another local.

Meanwhile, reacting to the involvement of state police personnel in the incident, Union Home Secretary G.K Pillai, who was on a visit to assess the overall law and order situation in the state, urged the state government to bring transparency in the recruitment of constables.

“If constables come into the police force on merit, you will get a much better, more efficient police force. Complain has come that some of the people who have been recruited did not undergo adequate screening of some of them. Screening would be done by the Manipur police to remove all the undesirable elements from the state police forces,” Pillai said. (ANI)

British forces destroy second Chinook helicopter to prevent Taliban access

London, Aug 31 (ANI): The British special forces in Afghanistan have destroyed their second Chinook helicopter, after it crash-landed with 19 people on board, to prevent it from being accessed by the Taliban.

The Chinook, with a crew of four, was ferrying soldiers from the 2nd Battalion when it landed heavily, east of Sangin in northern Helmand, suffering severe damage to the undercarriage, nose and front rotor, The Times reported.

“Despite all options being investigated, due to the location and the environment the decision was taken that it could not safely be recovered and so it was subsequently destroyed by military personnel using explosives,” the British Defence Ministry said.

The troops continued with their planned operation and the crew was picked up by one of the two other Chinooks on the mission.

On August 19, a British Chinook being used to drop Special Forces soldiers came under enemy attack, causing one of the engines to catch fire.

The pilot made an emergency landing and no one was hurt. Both Chinooks were reduced to scrap to prevent the Taleban gaining access to equipment on board.

The loss of two such valuable helicopters means that the British military now has only about 11 Chinooks to transport troops and supplies around Helmand.

Eight Chinook Mk3s that were bought for the Special Forces are being reverted to ordinary utility helicopters at a cost of more than 90 million pounds. However, the first of these will not be ready for operations in Afghanistan until next year, the paper reported. (ANI)

Another British soldier killed in Afghanistan, toll 196

London, Aug. 9 (ANI): A British soldier, from the 2nd Battalion the Mercian Regiment, was killed by an explosion in Helmand Province of Afghanistan, taking the death toll in Afghanistan since 2001 to 196.

According to reports, the soldier was on foot patrol at the time, and was killed by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

“Each and every loss that we sustain in Helmand sends reverberations throughout the brigade. Today, we mourn the loss of a soldier who died working to make Afghanistan a better place. He was prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice, displaying bravery that was second to none,” The Telegraph quoted Lieutenant Colonel Mark Wenham, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, as saying.

“Our thoughts are with his family and we offer them our deepest and heartfelt condolences at this tragic time,” he added.

Already five British soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan this month, it follows the record 22 fatalities in July.

The death comes two days after three Paras, Corporal Kevin Mulligan, Lance Corporal Dale Hopkins and Private Kyle Adams, were killed in southern Afghanistan.

The three were working with special forces at the time, and were carrying out a routine security patrol with Afghan forces.

A fourth member of the patrol injured in Thursday’s blast remained in a critical condition. (ANI)

British Army plans to axe 800 Gurkhas

London, July 13 (ANI): Faced with immense pressure to trim the 34 billion pound budget, British Defence chiefs are planning to axe about 800 Gurkha warriors.

According to the Daily Express, up to three infantry battalions could go despite calls for more men.

“If it comes to cutting infantry battalions, the Gurkhas are now No 1 on the list. They were only saved from the axe in the last defence cuts because they were seen as being fantastic value,” a defence source said.

“Although they are very good soldiers, they are now no less expensive than any other unit.” There are about 3,500 Gurkhas,” he added.

Branded by pro-Gurkhas as “madness” plans, the consideration of scrapping the battalion comes after a successful campaign by the Daily Express and actress Joanna Lumley for veterans to get the right to live here.

“They would be mad to do this. There’d be a huge outcry. The Army is disastrously over-stretched and Gurkhas are better at staying the course. Very few drop out. Our campaign has not made them more expensive,” said Peter Carroll of the Gurkha Justice Campaign. (ANI)

He sent his condolences to the bereaved families, but said it was important to “remember why our people are fighting in Afghanistan and what they are achieving through their sacrifice.”

“But they are losing and our commanders on the ground are very clear of that. But it’s going to take time and alas it does involve casualties, but when it’s complete there will be the opportunity for considerably greater governance for the people of Helmand,” he added.

Final assault in Lalgarh faces demonstrations against operations

New Delhi, June 30 (ANI): Police here on Tuesday detained several protestors demonstrating against the paramilitary forces’ operations against Maoists in West Bengal.

Activists of the Revolutionary Democratic Front (RDF) and the Naujawan Bharat Sabha (NBS) held banners, placards and raised slogans against the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Government of West Bengal for deployment of security personnel against the Maoists.

Protesters demanded immediate withdrawal of the Border Security Force (BSF), the Assam Rifles, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the Commando Battalion for Retaliate Action (COBRA) and other elite paramilitary forces along with the West Bengal police from Lalgarh town in West Midnapore district, which was recently captured by the Maoist rebels.

“We oppose the state terror that is going on in Lalgarh and atrocities are being done on tribals. Lalgarh’s cause is a public issue. This protest will continue and no state terror can stop it,” said an unidentified protester.

Protesters also demanded that alleged harassment of women and children in Lalgarh should immediately be stopped.

Paramilitary forces began their final assault on a Maoist stronghold, Katapahari region in West Bengal on Monday.

Earlier this week, the Central Government banned and formally labelled the Maoist insurgents as a terrorist group, hoping it would give security forces more enforcement powers after the rebels briefly created a “liberated zone” in West Bengal.

The move allows authorities to arrest members of the Maoist party even if they have not been involved in rebel violence. (ANI)
