Sean Connery retired because he didn”t want to play small roles: Michael Caine

London, May 21 (ANI): Michael Caine has criticized his long time friend Sean Connery for being stubborn and refusing to act in smaller roles.

Caine, who has forayed back into films of late after playing a series of supporting roles in films like Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and Austin Powers in Gold Member, thinks that the 007 star should have followed his lead and settled for less meaty roles.

Caine said that Connery, 79, was too interested in chasing “young man roles”.

“The movie business retired Sean Connery because he didn”t want to play small parts about old men and they weren”t offering him any young parts in romantic leads. So he was gone,” The Daily Express quoted Caine as saying. (ANI)

Superman”s debut comic sells for record $1.5M

London, March 30 (ANI): A copy of the 1938 edition of Action Comics No. 1, featuring Superman””s debut, sold Monday for 1.5 million dollars on the auction website ComicConnect.com, again breaking a price record that has been broken twice this year already.

The issue is widely considered the Holy Grail of comic books, reports the Telegraph.

The same issue sold in February for 1 million dollars.

That price was bested just days later when a 1939 comic book featuring Batman””s debut sold for 1 million dollars and change.

The issue that sold on Monday was bought from a private collector and then sold by Stephen Fishler and Vincent Zurzolo, the co-owners of ComicConnect.com.

Fishler refused to name the buyer but said he was ‘a hard-core comic book fan.’ (ANI)

Katie Holmes dismisses pregnancy rumours

London, March 15 (ANI): Katie Holmes has dismissed reports that she is expecting a second child with husband Tom Cruise.

But a spokesman for the star has now laid the claims to rest, saying: “Katie is not pregnant,” the Daily Star reported.

The agent further revealed the visit was actually made to E Baldi, an Italian restaurant, on the bottom floor of a doctor’s office building. (ANI)

Batman trumps Superman in million-dollar battle

LOS ANGELES: Superman and Batman’s first appearances in comic books have each set auction sales records and broken the $1 million barrier, in an age when traditional investments have fared badly and superheroes look attractive.

A 1939 comic with the first ever appearance of masked crime fighter Batman sold at auction in Dallas on Thursday for a record $1.075 million, said Heritage Auction Galleries. Three days earlier, a buyer paid $1 million for Superman’s world debut in Action Com-ics #1, more than tripling the previous comic book sales record set last year.

Shirrel Rhoades, former publisher and executive vice president of Marvel Comics, said the 1938 Action Comics #1 is arguably more historic than the first appearance of Batman, but that this week’s sales seem to be following their own logic. Back in the 1930s, both Action Comics #1 and Detective Comics #27 sold for 10 cents.

Batman Joker voted world’s best-loved villain

Washington, Sep 7 (ANI): ‘The Joker’ in the Batman, who gave sleepless nights to the winged superhero, has been named the world’s best-loved villain in a poll.

The character, which first appeared in a 1940 Batman comic, has been played on the big screen by the likes of Jack Nicholson and late actor Heath Ledger.

A computer games company placed the Joker top of the new poll, reports Contactmusic.

It has beaten Magneto – played by Sir Ian MCKellen in the ‘X-Men’ film franchise – which scored the second position in the poll.

Third place was taken by Spider-Man’s psychotic archrival- the ‘Green Goblin’, brought to life by Willem Dafoe in the 2002 film.

Jabba the Hutt from ‘Star Wars’ came in fourth and Superman’s nemesis ‘Lex Luther’ wrapped up the top five. (ANI)

Batman voted Britain’s Favourite Super Hero Ever

London, Sept 3 (ANI): Caped crusader Batman has been voted Britain’s favourite super hero in a new poll.

The ‘Dark Knight’ pushed webslinger ‘Spider-Man’ at the second place followed by the ‘Superman’ at third.

Batman, the alter-ego of billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne, has been immortalised in the 1960s TV series as well as a big budget movie franchise.

A video game called Batman: Arkham Asylum was also released last week.

“No matter how often he’s reinvented – a noir detective in the 40s, a camp icon in the 60s, a gothic Knight in the 80s – he’s always the coolest, most iconic and recognisable superhero there is,” the Telegraph quoted Dave Golder, editor of SFX.co.uk, the website which conducted the survey, as saying.

‘Wolverine’ and ‘Iron Man’ wrapped up the top five.

Britain’s top 10 favourite super heroes are:

4. Wolverine

5. Iron Man

Batman helmer abandons plans to direct movie version of The Prisoner

Washington, Aug 19 (ANI): Filmmaker Christopher Nolan has given up all plans of directing a film based on the cult British TV series The Prisoner.

Nolan was to direct a big budget blockbuster version of the 1968 show starring Patrick McGoohan, and his exit has now kicked of rumours that he plans to start early with his third Batman movie.

The director has, however, left behind The Prisoner in a complete mess. The movie’s producer Barry Mendel has said they might not be able to start on the film before movie executives see the level of success that its new TV version – featuring Ian McKellen and Jim Caviezel – achieves.

Contactmusic quoted Mendel as telling CineFools: “Nolan has dropped out of it but we have a first draft (of the script) by David and Janet Peoples who wrote Twelve Monkeys. It’s a good draft and we’re working on the script right now.

“If the series was wildly popular that might effect us. The screenplay (we’ve got) is such a re-imagination of the series, if you think of The Avengers that wasn’t a commercially successful film but it was very much in the spirit of the original show, this looks and feels so different that the tenants of the show are apparent but the execution of it is so different that I think it is unrecognisable.” (ANI)

Katie Holmes set to launch dance scholarship

The Hollywood actress is set to appear on Lythgoe’s U.S. show ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ later this month.

As part of the scholarship, underprivileged youngsters will get the opportunity to take part in dance programs, and win grants to enrol in accredited dance studios, according to Daily Variety.

“I think it’s important for children to experience music and dance. Every child should have the opportunity to discover what it is they like and have access to the very best in that pursuit,” Contactmusic quoted Holmes as saying.

‘The Batman Begins’ star is all set to show off her dancing skills on the floor during a special 100th episode of ‘So You Think You Can Dance’, where she will perform a tribute to Judy Garland. (ANI)

Spider-Man does exist, says comic-book guru

Washington, July 4 (ANI): Spider-Man has found life outside of comic-book pages, says an associate humanities librarian for Texas Tech University Libraries.

In an article published in the International Journal of Comic Art, pop-culture guru Rob Weiner basically says that Spider-Man and his costumed peers have entered mankind’s collective consciousness, filling a shared need for heroes.

“When I started reading graphic novels, I was struck by the fact that stories about Spider-Man or Batman and Superman could have as many plot twists and turns as any story by Shakespeare, Stephen King or Leo Tolstoy,” he said.

“I was struck by how good some of the writing was for these so-called “kiddie” books, and that somehow these archetypical characters like Spider-Man were replacing Odysseus and Zeus as part of modern mythology,” he added.

Spider-Man’s resume includes a number of films, a TV series, magazine appearances, graphic novels, videogames, and action figures.

His fans can often be seen clad in his costume, while doing something as humble as feeding the homeless.

“While some of this (affectation) is categorically tongue-in-cheek and they don’t have ‘super powers,’ these actual-world costumed figures are trying to do good for their fellow citizens, which shows just how pervasive fictional realities can be,” Weiner said. (ANI)

It’s official: Holmes will make So You Think You Can Dance appearance

“It’s about a charity [but] I do not have the status. It’s just not legal to talk about it at the moment,” People magazine quoted him as saying.

He added: “Katie is a small part of what is going on. It’s more than Katie.”

“But yeah, that was really fun. I had a good time,” she added.

The actress played the feline superhero opposite Christian Bale in 1992 movie Batman Returns directed by Christopher Nolan.

The news has come as a shock to actor Christian Bale, who has already signed for the next flick, reports The Daily Express.

The Prestige star, who shares a good rapport with Nolan, expressed his disappointment over the news, saying: “The fact is I have to do it, I’ve signed up, I’m in a bit of a fix if he says he doesn’t want to do it.”

A source said: “It will come as a real blow to Christian if Christopher won’t direct him on the next Batman film even if Christian is contractually obliged to do it.”

The film is scheduled for release in 2011. (ANI)

Christian Bale caught snoozing during first Batman scene

London, May 23 (ANI): Christian Bale made the ultimate goof-up while shooting for his first scene as Batman-he was caught sleeping on the set.

The British actor has revealed that he is so calm during movie shoots that he’s often found snoozing when the cameras roll.

“I fall asleep on sets all the time. I’ve done it in the middle of scenes,” the Daily Star quoted him as telling GQ magazine.

“In Batman Begins, in the first scene I had with Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman, I fell asleep. I was meant to be waking up, so I laid down and just fell asleep.

“I didn’t hear ‘action’ so Michael and Morgan were talking and I was supposed to join in. I woke up with Michael Caine poking me in the ribs, going, ‘Look at that! He’s bloody fallen asleep,’” he added. (ANI)

‘Blood thirsty’ Christian Bale struggles with vegetarianism

Washington, May 22 (ANI): Christian Bale has been having a hard time being a vegetarian since the actor often craves to eat meat.

The Batman star revealed he had given up being a non-vegetarian at the young age of seven and stayed that way for almost 20 years, until a movie theatre experience egged his compulsion to have meat.

“I was in Toronto and went to see the (1997) movie Life is Beautiful by myself,” Contactmusic quoted him as telling GQ magazine.

“And when I came out, I had a craving for blood unlike anything I had ever experienced since I decided to go vegetarian.

“It was a compulsion. It was undeniable. I went to several restaurants, one right after the other and got the biggest bloodiest steaks I could get my hands on. It was the first time I had tasted flesh in almost 20 years,” he added. (ANI)

Christian Bale forced writers to re-do ‘Terminator Salvation’ script

London, May 12 (ANI): Christian Bale was so adamant to play the role of John Connor in ‘Terminator Salvation’ that he forced its writers to re-do its script, to give him a bigger part in the latest instalment in the sci-fi franchise.

Originally, Bale was offered the lead role of Marcus Wright in the upcoming sequel, but the ‘Batman’ star turned down the part, and claimed to only play Connor in the film.
The character, which was featured in all three previous Terminator movies, was only set for a brief appearance in the latest outing.

Thus, the writers were ordered to do up the script once again to give Bale a bigger role.

“A lot of the work was integrating (Connor) into scenes… and having that feel integral and sensible, as opposed to grafted on just because there was a star in the part,” the daily Star quoted ‘Terminator Salvation’ scriptwriter John Brancato as saying.

The new movie hits cinemas on May 21. (ANI)
