Bangalore University to hold examination adalat

BANGALORE: To clear the backlog of 4,000 cases on faculty marks cards, wrong names and non-declaration of results, Bangalore University will hold an examination adalat. BU will submit itself to the scrutiny of a retired high court judge in a bid to reduce pendency of cases and bring in transparency. The decision during the adalat will be binding on the university, students, colleges and other stakeholders. “We want all cases to be disposed of in three months,” the BU V-C said.

Book fair: BU plans to hold `World of Books 2011′, a mega book fair at Palace Grounds on August 12 to mark Librarians’ Day. The event will be open to 1 lakh students and 25,000 faculty from the university’s 600-odd affiliated colleges. One million books will be on display. Besides academic activities and literary walks, BU will give away the `best user award’ to one PG student who uses the university library the most.

No chairs now

BU’s proposal to start academic chairs in the name of Gautam Buddha, BR Ambedkar and Akka Mahadevi, among others, got a thumbs down from academic council members. Members said the university should first review the working of the existing chairs before setting aside Rs 60 lakh for new ones. BU V-C N Prabhu Dev admitted that Rs 5 lakh granted by Isro for a chair is insufficient and the Kempegowda Chair set up by BBMP is not functioning properly.

Biogas plant : To explore the possibility of generating power on its own, BU will set up a biogas plant at an estimated cost of Rs 100 lakh on Jnanabharathi campus. The city corporation will supply 25 tonnes of organic waste daily for 15 years.

Farmhouse owner shot at dogs, not Sri Sri: Police

Bangalore, June 5 — The gunshot on May 30 suspected to have been aimed at spiritual teacher Sri Sri Ravi Shankar was meant to scare away dogs, and was not fired in the Guru’s hermitage, police said on Saturday. The shots were fired from a farmhouse, whose owner, Mahadev Prasad, allegedly was shooting at dogs to prevent them from attacking his cattle. He was detained for questioning and his licenced revolver was seized. The farmhouse is just opposite the hermitage, 21 km south-west of Bangalore. Karnataka Director General of Police Ajai Kumar Singh reiterated his earlier position that it was not an assassination bid on the spiritual teacher. The development vindicates the position of Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, who had doubted the assassination theory. Sri Sri said he had confidence in the police and was satisfied with the investigation. “I don’t want cheap publicity,” he said. By all accounts, the bullet fired from Prasad’s gun travelled more than 2,300 feet and, without causing harm, hit a devotee called Vinay Kumar at the hermitage. Singh said no case had been filed against Prasad. Prasad told reporters he was not aware that the bullet had hit someone and hence he did not approach the police. “Too much has been spoken about one bullet,” he told reporters adding the focus should now be on broader aspects as “so many other bullets are being showered in different parts of the country” referring to violence in several places. Denying any hidden motive of trying to upgrade his security or seeking publicity for the ashram through the incident, he said the suspicion of an attack arose as an incident of such nature had not occurred in 30 years of the ashram’s existence. Moreover, the ashram’s work in trying to reform and its success in getting several people to lay down arms had not gone down well with all, which gave rise to doubts of an attack, he said apparently referring to his efforts to reform naxals.

The DGP said Prasad had not been arrested as no offence had been made against him.

Maoists drop guns, take deep breath at Sri Sri ashram

Bangalore, June 5 — Spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, who has mesmerised millions in India and abroad, now has some unexpected followers – the Maoists.

Seventeen rebels visited his ashram near Bangalore on Friday to seek his help in removing negative emotions and shunning violence, the founder of the Art of Living Foundation said on Saturday.

The Maoists came from Jharkhand, Bengal, Bihar and Chhattisgarh and participated in several yogic sessions, said Ravi Shankar, who escaped unhurt when a gunman fired at his convoy last week. The guru said he was helping the Maoists get off the path of violence and accept the olive branch offered by Home Minister P. Chidambaram.

The Maoists are believed to have got in touch with the Art of Living Movement through peace and meditation camps organised by the foundation to motivate ultras to quit violence.

The foundation, however, did not disclose if these Maoists had given up arms before participating in the yoga sessions.

Gadkari calls for adequate security for Sri Sri

New Delhi, May 31 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari Monday urged Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa to provide adequate security cover to Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravishankar and said he was ‘deeply disturbed’ by the shooting incident in his ashram.

In a letter to Yeddyurappa, Gadkari said: ‘The shocking incident of firing by an unidentified gunman at the convoy of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar-ji in Bangalore… has deeply disturbed me.’

He also urged the central government to provide adequate security cover to the spiritual guru, who has millions of followers in the country and abroad.

A gunman allegedly opened fire inside the ashram, on the outskirts of Bangalore, as the guru left after delivering a discourse Sunday evening. He was in the car when the shot was fired.

‘I strongly condemn this cowardly act on the part of unscrupulous elements,’ the BJP chief wrote, adding: ‘I am confident your government will book the culprits at the earliest. I have heaved a sigh of relief that the Art of Living Guru escaped unhurt… His safety and well-being is paramount. We should not spare any effort in ensuring his security.’

Yeddyurappa orders CID probe to rape charge against Karnataka minister

Bangalore, May 3 (ANI): Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has ordered a CID probe into the rape charges lodged by a woman against former State Food and Civil Supplies Minister H Halappa.

Talking to reporters here, Yeddyurappa said: “I have decided to order a CID probe. Let the truth come out. Whoever is guilty, should get punishment.”

Yeddyurappa further accused the opposition of trying to give a new form to the issue.

Halappa quit on Sunday after a leading Kannada daily published a front-page report alleging he sexually assaulted his friend”s wife.

Speaking to media after submitting his resignation to Yeddyurappa, Halappa said he was holding discussions with his lawyer to take further legal actions.

Halappa claimed that he resigned on moral grounds and to boost the morale of party workers.

After Halappa”s exit, the woman and her husband lodged a complaint of rape and criminal intimidation against him.

She filed a complaint under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

She also released a CD to media, which contains visuals of Halappa in his house. (ANI)

Indian women boxers get set for Asian Games and World Cup bouts

Bhopal, Apr 24 (ANI): The Indian women boxers are preparing for the ensuing Asian Games and the World Cup at the national training camp held at Bhopal.

This camp, which commenced on April 15, will continue till May 21.

The Indian Women Boxing Team chief coach, Anup Kumar, said every woman is trained individually in this camp and that the team is going to perform well in both the Asian Games and World Cup.

“We also emphasise on the defence part…defence…punch…which is going on nowadays…the defence which is done as a reaction to an attack…a counter attack which is done, is the best defence, more attention is laid on that. We do first attack as well,” Kumar said.

“Nowadays, there is computer scoring, which has changed a lot in scoring. Earlier…in manual scoring, it was easier, but today, if the chin does not go up, the punch is not considered strong enough, which means if the body weight is entirely on the punch, then it will earn a point,” he added.

Kumar further said that the Indian Boxing Federation (IBF) has chosen a capable team of senior as well as junior players for the camp.

The government of India has suggested an additional foreign coach to add to their experience.

M C Marykom, the four times world champion, said that all boxers at the camp are working hard and that they are much impressed by Kumar”s training, and another coach would supplement their skills.

“I think our Indian boxers have performed well. Anup Sir has given us good training and all the national coaches are doing good training with us. So…I mean…it is fine…if Russian coaches come, we will learn some techniques used there. I think we will benefit,” said Marykom.

She added that one or two from every country can give a good competition at the championship but China is the toughest competitor as of now.

After the camps in Patiala, Bangalore and Kolkata, the fourth one in Bhopal has witnessed more number of women, since it is centrally located.

Kumar is assisted by eight other coaches in the Bhopal camp. (ANI)

RCB owner Mallya backs beleagured IPL chief Lalit Modi

Bangalore, Apr.20 (ANI): Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) owner Vijay Mallya has strongly supported IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi, saying that he is the creator and the brains behind a highly successful and lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL).

Mallya said IPL owes its success to Modi and said that he was perplexed and amused by the hue and cry raised over trans-border transactions by some IPL franchisees.

“Unfortunately, this entire issue has snowballed into an unnecessary storm. As far as I”m concerned, I”m full of appreciation for what Lalit Modi has delivered through the IPL. If he has issues with the Government of India, that”s his private matter and he needs to deal with it,” said Mallya.

“Cross-border transaction is part and parcel of the growth and development of Indian economy. Just because some investment has been routed through Mauritius doesn”t make it tainted investment,” Mallya added.

He was referring to Modi’s decision to reveal the ownership of IPL Kochi franchise, which cost Shashi Tharoor his ministerial job.

With allegations of money laundering and betting doing the rounds, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has said that all aspects, including the sources and routes of funding of IPL teams, will be thoroughly probed.

He said RCB had a clean slate and he had no doubts that other franchises also had unsullied record.

He also rejected reports of franchise owners meeting with BCCI officials on the cash row and ownership issue.

A private television channel quoted him as saying: “I”m not aware of any such meeting. But if there is a meeting of the franchise owners, I will attend as I always do. But as of now, I”m not aware of any such initiative to dislodge Modi.” (ANI)

Wellington cricket squad reconsidering plans to visit Bangalore after blasts

Wellington, April 19 (ANI): An under-16 Wellington side, which was scheduled to play three ODIs in Bangalore, is reconsidering its travel plans following Saturday”s explosions in Bangalore.

Two bombs exploded earlier outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, injuring at least 17 people, just as an Indian Premier League match between the Bangalore Royal Challengers and the Mumbai Indians was about to begin. Two more bombs were detected a day later.

Gavin Larsen, former Black Cap and Cricket Wellington CEO, told NZ Herald News that though the trip was “a chance of life-time”, he would consult the International Cricket Council”s security specialist, New Zealand Cricket Player Association head

Heath Mills, and an independent security specialist before taking a final call in the next 48 hours.

He said parents have entrusted Cricket Wellington to make the decision and added: “The bottom line is we would not compromise the safety of the touring party”. Recalling his days in Sri Lanka in 1992, when a bomb went off near the player”s hotel, he said: “The episode was incredibly unnerving”. (ANI)

IPL attack will not deter participation of Australian Commonwealth Games team

Sydney, Apr 19 (ANI): The chief executive of the Australian Commonwealth Games Association has said that they will be participating in the 2010 Delhi Games despite threats from terror outfit and crude bombs exploding in Bangalore ahead of an Indian Premier League match.

“While security in that part of the world is an issue, measures have been put in place and ramped up considerably. Other than the outbreak of war, the Commonwealth Games have always gone ahead,” a defiant Perry Crosswhite said on Sunday.

Crosswhite was responding to threats from Ilyas Kashmiri, leader of the feared 313 Brigade, an al-Qaeda-linked group, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Former marathon great Steve Moneghetti, who is the chef de mission for Australia’s New Delhi team, was also bullish about the security in place for athletes after a six-day inspection of Delhi facilities.

Speaking in Perth yesterday, where the national athletics championships were doubling as Games selection trials, Crosswhite said he had not been contacted by any athletes worried that the Bangalore attack would deter them from going to Delhi.

“These things continue to happen and they will continue all the way to the Games, but [security experts] don’t see it as a direct threat to the Games,” he told AAP. (ANI)

Commonwealth Games security will have to be more vigilant: Home Secretary

New Delhi, Apr.19 (ANI): India’s Home Secretary, G.K.Pillai, has said that tighter security will be needed at this year”s Commonwealth Games, especially after loopholes surfaced in Bangalore during an Indian Premier League match on Saturday.

Pillai told the Sydney Morning Herald the blasts targeting spectators at Bangalore”s Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday ””means we have to be far more vigilant”” during the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in October.

Two makeshift bombs went off outside the venue for the match between the Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians, injuring at least 17 people, including several policemen on Saturday.

An unexploded bomb was defused at a stadium gate and on Sunday another crude unexploded device was found near a statue of Mahatma Gandhi not far from the stadium.

””This is about the 50th [Indian Premier League] cricket match we”ve had in the past two months, and I think, maybe, they just got a little complacent,”” Pillai said.

Pillai said security would ””be in order”” for the Delhi Games and the Bangalore blasts had not increased government concerns for the event.

””We are still quite confident that such an incident won”t happen [at the Games],”” he said. (ANI)

Symonds hits Chargers home

Andrew Symonds recovered from a pasting off his own bowling to belt the Deccan Chargers to a seven-wicket IPL win over Bangalore at M Chinnaswamy Stadium overnight.

Symonds was hit for 23 runs in the 17th over by 21-year-old Virat Kohli (58 off 35 balls) as the Royal Challengers scored 69 runs off their final four overs to post 6 for 184.

But the big Queenslander responded in brutal fashion with the blade, finishing unbeaten on 53 from 24 balls and striking the winning runs with four balls to spare for the Chargers.

Their reply had looked a bit wobbly at 3 for 95 late in the 12th over when Symonds walked to the crease, the reigning IPL title holders still needing nine runs to win off the last over bowled by right arm seamer Vinay Kumar.

But Symonds quickly solved the equation with two big blows, the first hitting the second tier of the stand and the second just landing inside the rope.

Not that the big hitting was solely the domain of Symonds with Cameron White (13 not out off three ball) hitting the final two balls of Bangalore’s innings off compatriot Ryan Harris’s bowling over the ropes.

Symonds’s team-mate Tirumalasetti Suman (78 not out from 57 balls) was named man of the match as the Chargers kept their slim finals hopes alive.

“A 90 per cent improved performance, still 10 per cent left to do,” said Chargers skipper Adam Gilchrist (32 runs off 19 balls).

“Suman was brilliant, Symo outstanding, our bowling needs to improve though.

“Team morale has been pretty good. Our next game is a must win game.

“When I got out, we thought we had paced the innings well, in this ground it is possible to push on towards the end.

“This will go a long way in putting us back on the path.”
