405th installation anniversary of Sri Guru Granth Sahib

Agra, Sep 19(ANI): People of all religions and communities gathered to celebrate the 405th anniversary of the installation of the Sikh holy scriptures, Sri Guru Granth Sahib, at Gurudwara Maithan in Agra.

This was a significant landmark for the Sikhs, as the 275-year-old handwritten scripture, whose front pages are written with gold, was put on display for the devotees.

“The Guru Granth Sahib has the preaching or ‘bani’ of famous poets like Kabir ji, Guru Ravidas ji and Baba Farid ji. It is symbol of humanity and so people of all the religions have gathered here to celebrate the ‘Prakash Parv’, the installation ceremony together,” said Kanwldeep Singh, President of Sri Gursikh Sabha.

Also on display was a miniature scripture of Guru Granth Sahib, which has been preserved at the Gurudwara Maithan for the past 15 years.

“We have Guru Granth sahib of 1 X 1 inches long. The British for the convenience of Sikh soldiers especially designed the holy book during the First World War, as they could not carry a normal sized book in the battlefield. The miniature Guru Granth Sahib was printed in Germany. It was kept in a silver box,” said Gyani Kashmir Singh, head Granthi of Gurudwara Maithan.

To mark the anniversary of the installation of Guru Granth Sahib, special prayers were also held in the Gurudwara premises, which once the house of Mai jassi that was visited by Guru Sri Tegh Bahadur.he gurudwara is currently undergoing renovation and will be expanded to facilitate the large number of devotees visiting the shrine.

A total of 20 million dollars will be spent on renovation and construction of new Gurudwara, a 100-bed hospital and a community hall.

Gurudwara Maithan also upheld the tradition of Langar, which has been followed over the centuries. Guru Arjan Dev and Mata Ganga set the precedent of preparing and serving food to the hungry, in the langar hall, where all social, economic and religious barriers collapse and all – the laborer, the lord, the peasant and the prince, are treated alike and served the same food in the same manner.

This is a practice of great social significance, and it is the key to the understanding of Sikhism. By Brijesh Sharma (ANI)

Jumbos enjoy a day off at a wildlife sanctuary in West Bengal

Jalpaiguri, Sep 18 (ANI): Captive elephants, used by the forest officials to supervise the area, enjoyed a royal treat at the Jaldapara Sanctuary in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal.

The forest officials use elephants to supervise the area since most of the sanctuary is inaccessible by vehicle or on foot.

Every year on the occasion of Vishwakarma puja, the jumbos get the much-awaited annual holiday.

On this day, the elephants are given special treatment. The day starts with the bathing of the animals in the river. The mahouts then decorate the elephants and give them special food.

“The elephants are the ride of Lord Vishwakarma and Vishwakarma takes care of machine, elephants. That’s why we the staff members of Jaldapara Wildlife perform this puja (ritual),” said Kharke Bahadur, a mahout.

Wildlife officials said elephants played a big role in maintaining the sanctuary.

“Because at Jaldapara, it’s mainly wildlife area. Here, there is very important role for such captive elephants because some areas where vehicle movement and foot patrolling is not possible because there is risk to life and these areas are accessible (because of elephants). So we totally depend on these captive elephants,” said Buddhadev Mondal, range officer at the sanctuary. (ANI)

Pakistan government’s strategy to “isolate” Mehsud a non-starter: Report

Islamabad, July 15 (ANI): The Pakistan government may have announced an all out war against the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief Baitullah Mehsud in South Waziristan, but it has so far failed to bring the important Taliban leader Jalaluddin Haqqani on its side as part of its strategy to isolate the warlord, the BBC reports.

While Pakistan Air Force’s fighter jets continue to pound suspected hideouts of the Taliban in South Waziristan, every step to garner support of Haqqani, a key Afghan leader, has failed.

Haqqani has refused to side by the government and isolate Mehsud.

Experts believe that the government’s strategy to disassociate Haqqani from Mehsud would never succeed.

It was Haqqani’s son, Sirajuddin who had played a vital role in uniting three major Taliban leaders – Hafiz Gul Bahadur, Baitullah Mehsud and Mullah Nazir in Waziristan, so it is very hard to believe that he and his father would side by the government, they opine.

The government, through local tribal leaders, is also pushing to alienate Hafiz Gul Bahadur and Mullah Nazir groups from Mehsud, but local tribals said its efforts have failed to yield desired results till now, The Nation reports. (ANI)

Nepal alliance parties form taskforce for govt formation

Kathmandu, May 27 (ANI): A joint meeting of the 16 out of 22 parties supporting the UML-led government on Wednesday decided to form a taskforce to made suggestion regarding the set up of the new government and the ministerial portfolios in the new cabinet.

The parties decided to from a taskforce to study the issues after the meeting held this morning failed to reach a consensus on the issues.

The taskforce includes the coalition leader CPN-UML and its probable allies, the Nepali Congress, the Madheshi Janadhikar Forum and the Tarai Madhesh Loktantrik Party. The taskforce will also finalise the government’s Common Minimum Programme (CMP). 50-point CMP of the government was distributed in the meeting.

However, the task to finalise the CMP has been given to the taskforce after some leaders complained that the CMP was incomplete.

The parties have also suggested Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal to revert the decision of the Maoist government to terminate army chief Rookmangud Katawal and appoint Kul Bahadur Khadka as acting chief.

As proposed by the UML, the parties agreed to end the winter session of the parliament early.

Similarly, the parties have urged Speaker Subash Nembang not to table the resolution registered by the Maoists at the parliament secretariat before the parliament for discussion, Nepalnews eported. (ANI)

Grieving Gurkha given permission to stay in the UK

Kathmandu, May 14 (ANI): A grieving Gurkha veteran who watched his soldier son’s flag-draped coffin return from Afghanistan yesterday has been told he can stay in Britain.

Officials had earlier snubbed heartbroken Dhan Bahadur Pun’s request to settle here despite his family’s sacrifice and his own 16 years of impeccable service to this country. But after relentless pressure from The Sun, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith last night ruled that ailing, 63-year-old Dhan will be allowed to settle in the UK.

Dhan, his wife and children had been granted only short-stay visas to be at RAF Lyneham, Wilts, to see the coffin of Gurkha Corporal son Kumar, 31, flown back.

A suicide bomber in Helmand province killed Kumar. His coffin was carried from an RAF Hercules with those of three other servicemen who also died in Afghanistan last week.

Dhan believed he was condemned to go back to an old age of penury and pain in a small third-floor flat in Kathmandu.

But Smith told The Sun: “We owe this man and his family a huge debt of honour. Dhan Bahadur Pun will be granted right of settlement in the UK.”

Dhan served with the 6th Queen Elizabeth’s Own Gurkha Rifles from 1966 to 1982, fighting in Malaysia, Brunei and Cyprus. (ANI)

Karachi, Taliban’s new conquest?

Karachi, May 7 (ANI): With the military action against the Taliban getting intense in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), fears of the extremists shifting their base to the southern part of the country and taking Karachi under their grip have also gained momentum.

The growing ethnic Pashtun population on the outskirts of Karachi has raised fears among residents that the Taliban is slowly expanding its reach in the region.

Political parties such as the secular MQM have also expressed concerns over the issue.

“I don’t know if the fight is going to be happening in the North [of Pakistan] or down here,” a Member of Parliament with the MQM Haider Abbas Rizvi said.

The ethnic divides in Karachi could also probably help the Taliban to exploit the situation to bolster its position in the region, a report in the CSM said.

“If the Taliban wanted to destabilize Karachi, ethnic riots would be one of the first things they would do.By taking charge of the political leadership of that political movement, they could start taking over large chunks of Karachi,” the report quoted the author of ‘Descent into Chaos’ Ahmed Rashid, as saying.

Rashid said that the 3,500 madrasas in and around Karachi are full of Taliban, but asserted that almost all of them were ‘moderates’ who did not support the extremist Taliban.

However, senior police officials have denied presence of the Taliban in Karachi or in its nearby areas.

“It is not true that militants have infiltrated this area.People think that all the refugees who have come from FATA are Taliban. But most of them are villagers who had family in Karachi and came here because they knew they would find a place to stay and help finding a job,” a senior police official Irfan Bahadur said . (ANI)

CPN (UML) decides to pull out of Maoists-led govt. in Nepal

Kathmandu, May 3 (ANI): Nepal plunged into a deep political crisis on Sunday evening with Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist), the second largest coalition partner deciding to pull out of the Maoist-led government, in opposition to the latter’s unilateral decision to sack Chief of Army Staff Rookmangud Katawal.

The decision to call back its ministers from the government and withdraw its support to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal was reached at an emergency meet of the party’s standing committee held after the cabinet decision to sack the army chief on Sunday afternoon, a Nepal News report stated.

Addressing media, CPN (UML) Party general secretary, Ishwor Pokharel, said that the party had decided to quit the government and withdraw its support to the Maoists for taking unilateral decisions one after the other violating the accord of taking decisions of national importance with a consensus.

“A time has come to forge a new alliance of all parties with a national consensus,” Pokharel said.

UML has called an ‘all-party’ meeting following the standing committee meeting where the main opposition Nepali Congress and various fringe parties including Terai Madhesh Loktantrik Party, RPP Nepal and CPN (Samyukta) are participating.

Earlier, Nepal’s President, Ram Baran Yadav, is learnt to have expressed his ‘serious disapproval’ over the Maoist government’s decision to sack Chief of Army Staff, General Rookmangud Katawal, saying that it was taken without following “due procedures”.

Reports quoted sources at Shital Niwas (the President’s Office) as saying that President Yadav is dissatisfied with the government decision as it was done without “political consensus”.

President Yadav assured leaders of the Terai Madhesh Democratic Party (TMDP) this afternoon that he would decide his next move only after consulting all political parties and stakeholders.

TMDP termed the government decision as “undemocratic” and said it would oppose it both in parliament and in the streets.

Nepali Congress acting president Sushil Koirala and senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba also met President Yadav and expressed their party’s severe opposition to the sacking of General Katawal.

Earlier, Nepal’s Chief of Army Staff, General Rookmangud Katawal, who was sacked by the Maoist government on Sunday morning, has reportedly refused to accept the cabinet letter on his sacking.

The government’s chief secretary, Bhoj Raj Ghimire, handed over the sack letter to General Katawal soon after the cabinet decision, but he refused to accept it, describing the decision as unconstitutional. (ANI)

General Katawal ‘turns down’ Maoist Government’s sack order

Kathmandu, May 3 (ANI): Nepal’s Chief of Army Staff, General Rookmangud Katawal, who was sacked by the Maoist government on Sunday morning, has reportedly refused to accept the cabinet letter on his sacking.

The government’s chief secretary, Bhoj Raj Ghimire, handed over the sack letter to General Katawal soon after the cabinet decision, but he refused to accept it, describing the decision as unconstitutional.

He said he would consult his lawyers on the government decision.

Both General Katawal and Lt. General Kul Bahadur Khadka (the incoming army chief) were at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar when the cabinet took the decision.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda) had held separate and joint meetings with both generals prior to the cabinet meeting, which was boycotted by the allies.

Meanwhile, a meeting of Nepal Army generals called by General Katawal is underway at the headquarters, discussing the cabinet decision and its repercussions, Nepal News reported. (ANI)

Nepal’s army chief sacked for defying govt. orders

Kathmandu, May. 3 (ANI): Nepal’s Chief of the Army Staff, General Rookmangud Katawal, was sacked on Sunday. General Katawal was accused of defying a series of government orders, a spokesperson said.

Addressing the press at Prime Minister Pushpa Dahal’s residence in Kathmandu, Nepal’s Information Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara said after a cabinet meeting that General Katawal has been sacked.

Other coalition parties, including the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) protested the decision and boycotted the cabinet meeting.

On April 20, Nepal’s Defense Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa had sought clarifications from General Katawal for defying a series of government orders.

A tension of sorts had erupted between the government and the Nepal Army after the latter was asked to stop the process of recruiting midway.

The Nepal Government had earlier asked General Katawal to clarify the need for recruiting 3010 soldiers, reinstatement of the eight retired brigadier generals sans the approval of the Defence Ministry and boycotting the National Games on Tuesday.

The UCPN-M emerged from the Constituent Assembly elections in April 2008 as the single largest party and led the formation of the first republic government in August 2008. (ANI)

Poll panel orders transfer of three Jaunpur officials

New Delhi/Lucknow, April 20 (IANS) The Election Commission Monday ordered the transfer of three officials of Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district over the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of Indian Justice Party’s (IJP) Jaunpur candidate Bahadur Sonkar even as the state police dubbed the suspected murder as a ‘suicide’.

‘After going through the report of two IAS (officers) deputed by the Election Commission to visit Jaunpur, the commission orders immediate transfer of Ramkishore, Additional Superintendent of Police (city), Dipender Nath Chaudhary, Circle Officer, and Sanjay Kumar Rai, SHO Jaunpur,’ the poll panel said in a statement.

‘Election will be held in Jaunpur (Lok Sabha constituency of Uttar Pradesh) as scheduled,’ it said.

Addressing a press conference late Monday evening, state Director General of Police Vikram Singh said in Lucknow: ‘The preliminary investigation carried out by a special team headed by Additional Director General – Criminal Investigation Department – Padman Singh has found that prima facie the death of Bahadur Sonkar was a result of suicide.’

He parried questions raised by journalists and literally dragged away ADG (CID) Padam Singh in an obvious bid to avoid answering uncomfortable queries.

The ruling Bahujan Samaj Party’s (BSP) nominee for the Jaunpur seat Dhananjay Singh is a key accused in the death.

Sonkar’s body was found hanging from a tree, at a height of 15 feet high, on April 13 days after he refused to withdraw his nomination. He was reportedly being pressurised to withdraw from the race by a local deputy superintendent of police, known for his proximity to Singh.

The poll panel had sent a special two member team of non-Uttar Pradesh cadre IAS officers to carry out a separate inquiry into the incident.

It received the probe report on the death of Sonkar Sunday evening.

Sonkar’s brother Barhu Ram Sonkar had accused the state government of going all out to put a smokescreen over the alleged involvement of a BSP candidate in the murder.

The victim’s brother had filed a complaint to the Election Commission.

Nepal wants UN peacekeeping mission to end

Kathmandu – Nepalese prime minister has hinted that the term of United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) may not be extended beyond July, newspaper reports said Sunday.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal told visiting British Under Secretary of State for Defence Kevan Jones that Nepal intended to complete the reintegration of the Maoist combatants by July, and that UNMIN would no longer be needed, the Kathmandu Post newspaper reported.

“We have set a time table to complete the integration before the expiry of the UNMIN’s current mandate on 23 July”, the newspaper quoted the prime minister’s foreign affairs advisor Hira Bahadur Thapa as saying in relations to Jones’ query on the future of UNMIN.

Dahal said the government’s special committee for supervision, integration and rehabilitation of the combatants is determined to complete its job by mid-July.

“If things work as planned, we will be in a situation to discharge UNMIN by that time,” the newspaper quoted Thapa saying.

UNMIN came to Nepal in January 2007 on a one-year term after the Nepalese government signed peace with Maoist rebels to end the decade-long insurgency in the Himalayan nation.

The mission has been extended three times on a 6-month basis. Also up for renewal is the tenure of United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights – Nepal, which expires in June.

The office was established in 2005 during the King Gyanendra’s absolute rule, during the height of the conflict.

Nearly 20,000 of the original 32,000 Maoist combatants passed two phases of verification process by UNMIN in 2007.

The former combatants who passed the verification process now qualify for integration into the country’s armed forces. However, differences between political parties have stalled the integration process. (dpa)
