KFC in UK gets ‘halal’ treatment!

London, March 25 (ANI): Kentucky Fried Chicken has stopped serving bacon at its 86 branches in Britain to avoid offending Muslim customers.

The “halal trial” implies that pork or other “unlawful” meat not killed in accordance to Islamic dietary laws will not be a part of the menu.

However, non-Muslim customers are unhappy with the move.

“It is a testament to the divisions wrought on this country by the failed creed of multiculturalism that KFC feel the need to do this,” the Daily Express quoted UKIP Euro MP Paul Nuttall, as saying.

A KFC spokeswoman said: “We’ve only removed one product from our entire menu.” (ANI)

Kerry Katona to get her drug-ravaged nose ‘rebuilt’

London, Aug 26 (ANI): Drug-scandal hit Kerry Katona may soon have to undergo reconstructive surgery for her drug- ridden nose, it has emerged.

Coke sprees have left a hole in the former Atomic Kitten’s septum, the dividing wall between the two nostrils.

The Daily Star quoted a pal as saying: “Kerry is determined not to dabble ever again.

“She knows how close she has come to losing everything and isn’t going to take any more chances.

“She reckons if she pays for an op to rebuild her nose it will act as an incentive never to be tempted again.”

Kerry’s stepsister Pat Ferrier said the reality TV star was so addicted to cocaine that she had snorted up of 250 pounds of the drug in a day.

Pat said she had once seen Katona pull out a cartilage lump from her nose with a pair of tweezers.

She said: “It looked like when you get the fat off bacon.

“She told me rotting black stuff builds up inside and she has to dig it out every few weeks. But it didn’t stop her taking drugs.”

“Her nose is caving in. She needs to get help or she’ll die,” she added. (ANI)

Rosemary extracts, Thai spices in meat may curb exposure to carcinogens

Washington, May 30 (ANI): Adding some rosemary extracts or Thai spices to cooked meat can reduce the risk of exposure to carcinogenic compounds involved in the promotion of cancer, suggests a new study.

“Just one of the spices would work,” said J. Scott Smith, a Kansas State University food chemistry professor who researched the issue for the Food Safety Consortium.

“Rosemary would be fine or one of the Thai spices would be fine,” Smith added.

The researchers revealed that some commercial rosemary extracts can inhibit the formation of HCAs or heterocyclic amines in cooked beef patties by 61 to 79 percent.

And Thai spices can inhibit the formation by about 40 to 43 percent.

The research has found that HCA levels increase as charring increases on meat skin and the moisture content decreases.

Bacon and rotisserie chicken had the highest HCA levels with deli meats and hot dogs showing the lowest. Chicken skin and breast meat had all five of the HCA types.

“We’re trying to evaluate these levels based on the way the consumer would eat the product,” said Smith.

“We just looked at different products that consumers are consuming. We really didn’t have good data on it, so we took a look at it to see what the actual risk would be,” Smith added. (ANI)

Brit Muslim catering manager claims discrimination in pork handling row

London, May 12 (ANI): A Muslim catering manager, Hasanali Khoja, who refused to cook sausages and bacon because it was against his religion, has claimed that he was religiously discriminated against.

Khoja, 60, told a tribunal here that he feared he would be splashed with fat from the pork products and that even wearing gloves and using tongs to cook would not protect him.

Islam forbids Muslims to eat or handle pork products.

According to The Telegraph, Khoja alleges he was discriminated against due to his religion and that, during a meeting to resolve the situation, a human resources manager pulled faces and made racist gestures.

He said he had raised the issue of pork handling at his interview in 2004 for a senior catering manager job with the Metropolitan Police Service and was told no food handling would be involved as it was a supervisory role.

Khoja was successful and started the job at Hendon police training centre on March 7, 2005 but was found to have inadequate IT skills and in August that year accepted a job as higher catering manager at the same site.

His objections to touching pork products were respected and, during training assessments, a colleague cooked sausages and bacon for a so-called 999 breakfast while he cooked toast and eggs, he said.

On February 1, 2007 Mr Khoja said he was told he was being transferred to a kitchen at Heathrow Airport.

When he reported to Heathrow he was told he was expected to prepare, cook and serve all food and immediately voiced his objections to touching pork products.

A meeting was arranged to discuss the problem on February 12, which continued on February 13.

During the second day, Khoja said the human resources manager, Paul Bell, told him his job was at risk if he did not follow instructions. Bell then pulled faces and made racist gestures, Khoja said.

Khoja told the tribunal in Watford, Hertfordshire, that he had refused to handle pork products even if gloves and tongs were provided. (ANI)

Michelle Obama’s burgers and shakes ‘best ladies lunch ever’

Washington, May 9 (ANI): Michelle Obama shared the dining table full of burgers and shakes with a group of 20 staff members and friends at a posh restaurant.

The US First Lady dug into a variety of burgers, french fries and signature hand-spun toasted marshmallow shakes prepared by Top Chef alumni Spike Mendelsohn at Good Stuff Eatery in Washington, D.C.

“She was smiling and making jokes the entire time,” Us magazine quoted a source as saying.

“It looked like the best ladies lunch ever. Everyone was sharing fries and trying each other’s burgers and shakes,” the source added.

The group also had some “Obama Burgers,” a fresh, farmhouse burger topped with bacon, blue cheese, Mendelsohn’s homemade onion marmalade and a horseradish mayo.

Mendelsohn, who recently won best burger in the country at the South Beach Food and Wine Festival’s Burger Bash, said: “This was the best honor of my life.

“I absolutely love Michelle Obama and love the family. Now we just need the president. Hopefully he’ll follow her lead and come visit Good Stuff. Women know best, Mr. President!” (ANI)

Paul Newman’s widow upset over his shameful biography

Washington, May 1 (ANI): Late Hollywood actor Paul Newman’s wife Joanne Woodward is fuming over the release of a book called Paul Newman: A life, because it portrays him as a boozy womanizer.

Joanne is devastated that the immoral book written by Shawn Levy will depict the legendary actor in the bad light.

The book talks about Newman’s romance with a journalist on the set of Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid in Mexico and his alcoholic ways.

According to reports, the writer, Nancy Bacon, who wrote about Newman in her book Stars In My Eyes… Stars In My Bed, told Levy that she dumped the actor because he was “always drunk”.

However, Joanne is not buying any of it and is hurt that Newman, who worked so hard all his life and was known as an incredible artist, will be portrayed in a bad light after his death.

“Joanne is devastated and furious. She cannot understand why this cruel book is being written about Paul,” Contactmusic quoted a source, as telling America’s the Globe.

“Joanna and Paul had one of the longest, happiest marriages in Hollywood. She is terrified everyone is going to say it was all a sham and they lived a lie. She’s furious his (Newman’s) good name and legacy are being ripped apart,” the source added.

Newman died of cancer last September (08) at the age of 83. (ANI)

Healthy eating, exercise may cut cancers by a third

London, Feb 27 (ANI): Healthy eating and exercise could reduce the risk of most common cancers by more than a third, says a study by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF).

The report also said that in developing countries like China and Brazil, such lifestyle practices, could cut cancer risk by almost a quarter.

These figures do not include smoking, which alone accounts for about a third of cancers.

The study is based on the 2007 release of 10 recommendations on how to avoid cancer, which include avoiding processed meats – including bacon and some sausages – eating less than 6 grams of salt per day, maintaining a healthy weight, and exercising every day.

“People think that somehow cancer comes from heaven, or Darwin, or from their parent’s genes, but that’s not always the case. A third are caused by smoking, and approximately a third are related to diet and physical activity,” New Scientist quoted Michael Marmot, chair of the WCRF panel that produced the report, as saying.

For calculating the proportion of preventable cancers, the panel examined the biggest and most reliable studies to date on each of the 10 risk factors.

They then found a relative risk of developing cancer for each of the risk factor, which would be applicable to people not following the recommendations’ advice.

After that they estimated the proportion of people in the US, UK, China and Brazil that indulge in this kind of “risky” behaviour.

After combining the values for the 12 most common cancers, they estimated that 39 percent of UK cancers are preventable, while 34 percent of US cancers, 30 percent of Brazilian cancers, and 27 percent of Chinese cancers could be avoided.

This means “that there are more actions that could be taken in the UK to reduce cancer than in the US, China or Brazil,” said Martin Wiseman, medical and scientific adviser to the WCRF.

He further said that the consumption of alcohol is one of the biggest problems in the UK.

Although a glass or two of wine each day is good for the heart, “over that you get no additional benefit,” said Marmot.

The study has called for the governments across the world to make it easier for people to lose weight and eat healthily.

It suggested that the above goal could be accomplished by increasing access to sports facilities and making it safer to cycle to work, and by reducing the cost of healthy foods so people are more inclined to buy them.

“Individuals decide for themselves what to eat, but let’s make it easier for individuals and their families to make healthy decisions,” said Marmot. (ANI)

‘Burger-lover’ Padma Lakshmi reveals her body-perfect secret

Washington, Feb 26 (ANI): With Padma Lakshmi’s svelte figure, it would be difficult to imagine that she loves food. However, the pretty lady has confessed her love for burgers and maintains that she works really hard on her body.

“I grew up a vegetarian. Then, because I grew up in the states, I started slowly eating meat. First it was bologna sandwiches, or pepperoni on pizza. As a teenager, [my friends and I] would always go have burgers. I would scarf them down!” People magazine quoted the Top Chef host, as saying.

When asked how the food and fashion icon stays fit, Lakshmi says she works hard to maintain her figure.

“I work out all the time! I don’t just sit around and eat burgers whenever I want. Oh, if I could I probably would, but I don’t,” she said.

The stunner is currently putting her passion for meat into a new commercial for Hardee’s Bacon Western Thickburger.(ANI)
