Parents of Indian-appearance toddler unaware of his absence for 6 hours

London, May 19 (ANI): The callous parents of the three-year old boy who was found wandering on Sydney’s streets in a visibly distressed state, failed to register his absence for a full six hours.

The poor kid who was too young to even tell the police his name, had to go from street to street with child welfare workers in the hope of identifying his house.

Police assiduously searched for his home the entire day canvassing schools, pre-schools and childcare centres in the vicinity, but to no avail.

They drove around for 2½ hours before the toddler was able to point out his house, The Telegraph reports.

It has emerged that the parents of the boy both thought their son was with the other, and were unaware that their misconception could have cost them their son’s life. (ANI)

Delhi petrol pumps owners protest VAT hike, observe shutdown

New Delhi, May 14 (ANI): Petrol pumps in Delhi are observing a 24-hour shutdown in protest against the hike in Value Added Tax (VAT) on diesel by the Delhi Government on Friday.

Over 400 petrol pumps in Delhi are said to have downed their shutters.

Pump owners say oil sales have gone down by over 40 percent since the price hike.

“Diesel sales have reduced by 50 percent in June 2008 and have reduced by another 40 percent this year. This has made it unviable to run several petrol pumps. There are 20,000 families dependent on us and its becoming tough to even give out salaries,” said Atul Peshawaria, president, Delhi Petrol Dealers Association.

Peshawaria added that the association has sent repeated representations to the government but to no avail.

“We don”t want to inconvenience the people. But there seems to be no other way out. The government is completely unwilling to listen to us. If the sales have dropped so much, how can the government make more money on taxes?” Peshawaria questioned.

In Haryana, the price of diesel has been cut by Rs 3.88 where as in UP it will be cut by 68 paisa.

A litre of diesel costs Rs 34.75 in Haryana, as against Rs 38.10 in Delhi.

Pump owners said that due to hike in VAT, the motorists are choosing Noida, Faridabad or Guragaon which are under the NCR, to get a fill.

On April 9, the pump owners had called off their strike, following the assurance of Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit that their grievances will be addressed within 15 days.

Meanwhile, autorickshaw unions are also planning an indefinite strike from May 17 demanding to increase in minimum fare. (ANI)

Wellington weather frustrates Aussies

Poor weather may save New Zealand from defeat in the first Test against Australia after bad light stopped play on day four at Basin Reserve in Wellington.

Little cricket was possible in the final session of the day with the players forced from the field and the Black Caps will resume their second innings on Tuesday on 6 for 369.

They lead Australia by 67 runs with four wickets in hand.

Brendon McCullum will recommence on 94 and Daryl Tuffey 23 when play gets underway at the earlier starting time of 10:30am (local time) on day five.

Australia had begun the day confident of wrapping up a victory inside four days, however both the weather and stubborn resistance from the Black Caps served to frustrate the tourists.

The Black Caps had resumed on 5 for 187, needing 115 runs to make Australia bat again, and after a delayed start because of rain and wind they did not lose a wicket during the morning session to reach lunch on 5 for 266.

New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori and McCullum scored at a steady run rate to add 79 runs to their overnight total with the former reaching his 22nd half-century during the session.

The partnership, which pushed the Black Caps past Australia’s first innings total of 5 for 459 (declared), was brought to an end after lunch when Nathan Hauritz bowled Vettori for 77.

Vettori and McCullum put on a vital 126 runs for the sixth wicket.

McCullum survived an umpire referral during the middle session when on 52, having padded a ball from the bowling of Hauritz.

Umpire Asad Rauf had initially turned down the appeal and his decision was backed up by third umpire Aleem Dar after the recording equipment at the scoreboard end had been affected by extreme winds.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting argued with Rauf and his colleague Ian Gould for some time but his efforts were to no avail.

Nevertheless, McCullum continued to make progress and alongside Tuffey he helped guide the Black Caps through to tea at 6 for 363.

Only six runs were managed in the only two overs permitted during the final session, meaning McCullum and Tuffey had added 60 to the Black Caps’ salvage effort.

It has been admirable performance from the Black Caps so far in their second innings, considering they were dismissed for a disappointing 157 in their first knock on day three.

Aside from McCullum and Vettori, opener Tim McIntosh had been a valuable contributor with 83, although the display from the remainder of the home side’s top order left much to be desired.

Amazon red cards ‘offensive’ Man U chants

London, September 5 (ANI): Online retailer Amazon has withdrawn a CD of Manchester United chants from sale on its website after complaints were made that some of the lyrics were offensive.

The unofficial album titled ‘Manchester United Chants’ apparently contained a supporters’ song aimed at Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

Amazon.co.uk has come up with a statement explaining that Arsenal had complained about the nature of the chants.

“Arsenal Football Club has provided us with formal notice that content within the album ‘Manchester United Chants’ is defamatory in nature and we have, therefore, removed this title from our website,” the BBC News quoted the statement.

It further read: “We would not remove a product from our site because some, or many, people find it to be distasteful or otherwise objectionable.Continue reading the main story.

“We have gone on the record several times about this disgusting chant. We don’t condone it.”

The offensive chant was first voiced after Arsenal’s recent 2-1 defeat against Manchester United.

During the match Wenger was sent off, as he kicked over a water bottle following a disallowed Gunner’s goal.

Arsenal supporters have complained that he was then subjected to this particular chant by some Manchester United fans.

Meanwhile, Manchester United’s director of communications Philip Townsend has mentioned that the club does not approve of their fans behavior.

He said: “We have gone on the record – several times – about this disgusting chant.

“We don’t condone it and have appealed to fans several times in the past – through supporters’ groups, the matchday programme and MUTV, but to no avail.” (ANI)

Potable water shortage hits villagers in Kashmir

Kupwara (J-K), Sep 4 (ANI): Facing acute shortage of potable water, the villagers are forced to drink polluted water in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir.

A prolonged drought-like situation has further added woes to the villagers.

Everyday, women cover long distances to fetch water from village streams and lakes, which are not fit for drinking. But since taps in their houses have run dry, they are forced to take the filthy water from lake.

The villagers had even held demonstrations in the past, highlighting their plight to the government, but to no avail.

“We have all kinds of difficulties. Despite our protest, the government has not made any arrangements. They take out funds but do nothing. We are suffering due to shortage of water,” said Ashiq Hussain Bhat, a resident.

Residents said they are forced to take the filthy water from the nearby lakes as taps have run dry.The water we take from this lake is very dirty and full of sand. But we are forced to take the dirty water from here as taps have run dry,” said Rubeena, another resident.

Accepting that there is shortage of water due to long spell of dryness, concerned officials said that they have initiated steps to end the water shortage in the district.

“To overcome this difficulty, the department has already taken up and has got a new scheme approved under the Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme (ARWSP) phase new. Under the scheme, we will lift the water from Phurunala and store it in a reservoir in Tuthigund, which will solve all their problems,” said Mukhtar Ahmad Dar, assistant executive engineer, Public Health Engineering (PHE), Kupwara.

Total rainfall in the country since the beginning of June was 19 percent below average, pulled down by the driest June in 83 years, data from the India Meteorological Department showed.

India’s monsoon will remain weak according to the latest Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) index, which gauges the eastward progress of tropical rain. (ANI)

Imran Khan, Benazir Bhutto were an item, claims book

London, Aug 19 (ANI): Author of a new biography of Imran Khan claims that the cricketer-turned-politician was romantically involved with late former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto when both of them studied together at Oxford University.

In his book, Christopher Sandford writes that Bhutto became infatuated with Khan, and the pair enjoyed a “close” and possibly “sexual” relationship.he author has also alleged that Khan’s mother even tried to organise an arranged marriage between the pair, but to no avail.

It was believed that Khan and Bhutto had always been at loggerheads, both politically and personally.

In fact, Khan openly criticised the former Prime Minister just days before her death.

But Sandford, who interviewed both Khan and his ex-wife Jemima for the book, claimed that a source told him that Bhutto was 21, and in her second year of reading politics at Lady Margaret Hall, when she became close to Khan in 1975.

The source also revealed that she had been “visibly impressed” by Khan, and might even have been the first to call him the “Lion of Lahore”.

“In any event, it seems fairly clear that, for at least a month or two, the couple were close. There was a lot of giggling and blushing whenever they appeared together in public,” the Telegraoh quoted Sandford as having told the Daily Mail.

He added: “It also seems fair to say that the relationship was “sexual”, in the sense that it could only have existed between a man and a woman. The reason some supposed it went further was because, to quote one Oxford friend: ‘Imran slept with everyone.’”

However, the former Pakistan cricket captain has rebuffed these claims, saying that he never had a sexual relationship with Bhutto.

Although he agreed to having been interviewed for the book, but claimed to have not read it as yet.

“Yes, I was interviewed, but I know nothing about the rest of what has been written. So it is not official,” he told the Daily Mail.

“It is absolute nonsense about any sexual relationship or my mother and an arranged marriage. We were friends – that’s all,” he added. (ANI)

Gujarat hospital launches unique grain for health scheme for poor

Ahmedabad, May 24 (ANI): Villagers in Anand and Kheda in Gujarat can now avail medical benefits of up to Rs.5000 at Rs.90 or ten kilograms of food grains.

The Shri Krishna Hospital is promoting this unique initiative called the Krupa Arogya Suraksha (KAS) social security scheme.

The insurance cover will increase on higher subscription.

Under the scheme the hospital accepts food grains instead of money from people who belong to the special categories like landless labourers, farmers and other deprived section of the society, which accounts for 30 percent of the population in that district.

“We believe, a scheme such as the one we have, where you pay seven or eight kilograms of rice or wheat can be a good way to cover themselves through our scheme,” said Sandeep Desai, CEO, H.M Patel Center for Medical care managed by Charotar Arogya Mandal.

The medical benefits under the Krupa Arogya Suraksha (Security) scheme may be opted at the Shri Krishna Hospital or any other hospital nominated by Shri Krishna Arogya Trust (SKAT).

Any person between the ages of three months to 75 years is eligible to opt for the scheme.

So far, at least 45,000 people have enrolled themselves under KAS scheme.

SKAT plans to expand the work in rural areas by tying up with like-minded organization for maximizing benefits of the unique scheme.

“Till now this scheme is restricted only to Anand and Kheda districts (India’s western Gujarat). Our own hospital takes part in this organization. As our scheme grows, we would go to rural areas and tie up with like-minded organizations there,” said Pragnesh Gor, General Manager, Extension programme for Krupa scheme.

A special mobile van run by the Shri Krishna Hospital also goes door to door to spread awareness about the health care scheme and collects food grains from the families who enroll for the treatment.

This scheme also provides maternity benefits on completion of ten months of membership without any additional charges. It also covers pre-existing condition unlike other medi-claim policies. (ANI)

Banking system of Nawab era in India

Lucknow, May 10 (ANI): Not many people today may have an idea how banking system, which also existed during the era of Nawabs, functioned and maintained its’ routine transactions.

In Lucknow, the history enthusiasts and others have been offered an opportunity to get an insight of the banking system prevailing during the Nawab era by Allahabad Bank by making public its ledgers between 1865-1900 and 1900-1950.

Nawabs were originally provincial governors or viceroy of a province during the reign when Mughal Empire used to rule India. Banking in that era was mainly for rich and famous so banks had a simple process to offer loans.

“If you go thorough our ledgers, you will find that in 1897 we had suchlients who had availed of Rs. 400 million loan. One can gauge the value ofhis money as of now. During those days borrowers didn’t need to mortgage their properties or undergo complicated legal processes to avail loans,” said Hari Mohan, assistant manager, Allahabad Bank.

The Nawabs still remember the great personalized service they used to receive during that era.

“Earlier a great amount of personal attention was given to clients.he moment you reached the bank, staff started to look after you.

Bankanagers used to personally greet clients. Depending on the climate, beverages were offered to you. Even at times Paan (chewing betel leaf combined with the areca nut) and Hookah (a water pipe for smoking) was offered to clients,” said Jafar Meer Abdullah, a Nawab.

During those times, banks used to charge an interest rate of 8-12% onank loans.

Under British rule in India, the Nawabs ruled various princely states of Awadh, Bhopal, Junagadh, Pataudi among others. By Kamna Hajela(ANI)

Lance Armstrong says he split with Sheryl Crow over baby

Washington, May 9 (ANI): American racing cyclist Lance Armstrong has revealed in his forthcoming book that he and former fiancé Sheryl Crow called it quits because Crow was keen to have a baby while Lance was not.

Lance divulges in his book that, as he had just got out of his marriage, he did not have any immediate plans to have a baby with former fiancé Sheryl Crow, as her biological clock was ticking.
“She wanted marriage, she wanted children; and not that I didn’t want that, but I didn’t want that at that time because I had just gotten out of a marriage, I’d just had kids [Luke, 9, and twins Grace and Bella, 7],” Us weekly quoted Lance as stating in his book.

“Yet we’re up against her biological clock — that pressure is what cracked it,” Lance added.

Lance revealed that the former duo even visited a counsellor but to no avail, as Crow was bent upon having a baby.

“If somebody wants a child — man, that’s the greatest gift you can give to a woman — … who are you to stand there and say I don’t want one?” he says. “So we were at different points in our lives. We were not compatible on that issue,” Lance writes.

“I felt like I wasn’t ready … I would have been in the future, but not then,” Lance added.

After the split, Crow went on to adopt a two-week-old boy, Wyatt, and declared that she was loving each moment of her motherhood.

Lance announced in December that he was expecting a baby with girlfriend Anna Hansen. (ANI)

Punjab varsity to offer free education for blind

Chandigarh, April 20 (IANS) The Panjab University (PU) Monday announced that it will provide free education to blind students from the next academic session.

‘This decision has been taken as we want to fulfil our commitment towards the visually impaired students. There would be no tuition fees for the 100 percent visually impaired. The university will also provide them free stay and food at subsidised rates in the hostels,’ Naval Kishore, dean of students’ welfare, told IANS Monday.

‘Both new and old students of the university can avail this opportunity. This is probably for the first time in the country that any university has come up with such an initiative.’

In various departments of PU, seats are already reserved for single girl children and for cancer and AIDS patients.

‘It is a very generous gesture of the PU towards blind students. Normally there are only a few seats reserved for us in the departments, but free education, food and stay is quite extraordinary,’ said Brijesh Thakur, a blind student studying in the PU.
