Bob Geldof slams Australia’s treatment of Aborigines

Melbourne, May 19 (ANI): Irish singer Sir Bob Geldof has slammed Australia for its treatment of Aborigines, saying that it was “economically stupid” and “absurd”.

Geldof, 58, was speaking at a breakfast for West Australian mining entrepreneur Andrew Forrest’s nation-touring GenerationOne movement, which aims to halt indigenous disparity.

He said Australia has “exiled” indigenous Australians from the nation.

“They were forced to be exiled from themselves and that must stop,” News.com.au quoted him as saying.

“You need to pull them back into themselves because you’ve acknowledged them as being.

“The spiritual core of yourselves will only be filled when this is done,” he stated.

He urged the “rich bastards” in attendance at the breakfast to contribute wholeheartedly to Forrest’s fight to end indigenous disparity, and likened indigenous affairs in Australia to situations he’d witnessed in third-world Africa.

“I said on the radio back in 1984 that to die of want in a world of surplus is not only intellectually absurd, it is morally repulsive. Well let’s add economically illiterate to that,” he said.

“You’ve removed from your society of ‘having a go’ 500 thousand of your own. That is absurd. It’s economically stupid.

“Just like those 44 million African children (given access to education from the Live Aid campaign) will be a massive driving force in the world economy, so your own Aboriginal people require to be allowed in. The access point is education,” he added. (ANI)

Long Island strippers rally for ‘lap dance’ tax to benefit local schools

New York, May 13 (ANI): Strippers from a club at Long Island in New York rallied outside the Nassau County courthouse seeking imposition of tax on pole dancing for benefit of local schools.

The women were from the club ‘Illusions’ in Deer Park.

The club will also start charging 5 dollars as entry fee, from this weekend, to raise funds for local schools.

They hope the state implements legislation to tax lap dances.

“We just want to give back to our communities, because the state is cutting back on school aid,” the New York Post quoted Carmella Cioffi, 22, a strip dancer, as saying.

She added: “The government is always trying to raise taxes and here we are saying raise our taxes.”

“Carma,” was one of the three dancers in attendance and was carrying a sign, “Stripper Pole Tax Helps Local Schools. ” (ANI)

To avoid Obama”s visit, South African police chief wants US knocked out of WC

London, May 8 (ANI): South African police chief General Bheki Cele in order to avoid a visit by President Barack Obama to the country during the World Cup, is ”praying” that the US football team is knocked out of the tournament.

Briefing on senators on security, General Bheki Cele said that a visit by the US President, which could happen if the team makes the knockout stage, would be a nightmare.

Cele was briefing lawmakers on South Africa”s security plan for the World Cup, which has met with approval from Interpol, the global police agency, and security authorities of the 31 visitor teams.

“Our famous prayer is that they don”t make the second round. They get eliminated and they go home because we are told that if they go to the second or third stage, the American president might come,” The Telegraph quoted him as saying to the Parliamentary Police Committee.

The United States is one of 31 visitor nations competing for the World Cup in South Africa.

So far 43 heads of state have provisionally confirmed their attendance in the first World Cup on African soil, but General Cele said the presence of the US leader would double security requirements for the event

“That 43 will be equal to this one operation,” he said.

The United States is in Group C with England, Slovenia and Algeria. (ANI)

Taliban guns down outspoken Afghan tribal chief

Kandahar, Apr 29 (ANI): Taliban militia have gunned down Afghan tribal chief Abdul Rahman in Kandahar.

Rahman had attended a tribal shura a few days prior to his death. The gathering of 1,500 chieftains and tribesmen had President Karzai in attendance.

Rahman raised several pertinent questions with regard to the security situation and the threats posed by both the government and Taliban.

At the shura in Kandahar, the elders made it clear they thought the Karzai Government was as much a problem as the militants, who have grown in strength in the region in recent years reports the BBC.

Rahman had become widely known in Afghanistan after telling President Karzai that those who spoke out against the Taliban risked being killed.

The Taliban are blamed for a spate of killings in Kandahar province ahead of a planned Nato-led assault this summer. (ANI)

Karun Chandhok given five-place grid penalty for Chinese GP

Shanghai, Apr 17(ANI): Indian driver Karun Chandhok has been handed over a five-place grid penalty for Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai after the Hispania Racing Team broke a seal on his car’s gearbox following Friday practice sessions.

The 26-year-old must take a penalty, as the team opened the gearbox to work on it without an FIA official in attendance, which is a breach of regulations.

However, the penalty is unlikely to affect the rookie driver, who finished 24th and last after the qualifying session at the Shanghai International Circuit, Xinhua news agency reports.

Chandhok and his team-mate Bruno Senna were 15th and 16th respectively in the Malaysian Grand Prix, a fortnight ago, and have only once qualified off the back row of the grid in three attempts. (ANI)

‘Positive response’ to campus merger push

The New South Wales Teachers Federation says there has been an overwhelming response to a petition calling for Dubbo College to be restructured so that students from years seven to 12 are on the same campus.

Currently the college has a model where junior and senior students are separated.

The union says it is leading to problems with attendance and student engagement.

The federation’s western region organiser, Brett Bertalli, says it is clear what the community wants to happen with the college.

“It’s been a very positive community response – community members are very interested in the campaign and very interested in seeing a restructure of the Dubbo College,” he said.

“On average we are getting 100 signatures per hour.”

Mr Bertalli says teachers believe restructuring the college will have a positive impact on students.

“When surveyed, 90 per cent of all teachers, the professional educators within the classroom, have said a return to [year] seven to 12 comprehensive high schools will improve the attendance, achievement and that student engagement will improve,” he said.

Councillor attendance issue not a ‘witch-hunt’

The Mayor of Griffith says he is not being vindictive in responding to complaints about a councillor’s meeting attendance.

Former mayor Dino Zappacosta is under scrutiny by the Department of Local Government after he recently missed two meetings and was late for another.

Cr Zappacosta says he has been busy with the harvest and that meeting times have changed.

He says he arrived late and that he apologised.

Mayor Mike Neville says people have questioned the councillor’s record of attendance so he wrote to all councillors recently to warn them.

Cr Neville says he did not report the matter to the Department of Local Government, but council staff have been asked to investigate the councillor’s rights.

“If he’s found to be short by the department well there’s no case to answer, he’ll be disqualified,” he said.

“Councillors are aware of Cr Zappacosta’s requirements in relation to the vintage.

“He’s a winemaker and we understand that but simply had he put an application in for leave we wouldn’t be having this debate.

“If in fact, it’s not a problem, let’s just get on with the business and it’s certainly not a matter of vindictiveness.

“The issue isn’t really about a witch-hunt to get Cr Zappacosta. I guess he may well take that to be seen that way, but I guess … unfortunately if you put yourself into the spotlight, people are going to look.”

Fatal house fire in Mandurah

A 50 year old woman has died in a house fire at Mandurah, south of Perth.

Firefighters were called to the property in Hancock Street just after 04:30 this morning.

They say the roof of the home collapsed before they could extinguish the blaze.

ABC reporter Oliver Peterson says neighbours entered the house this morning but there was a lot of smoke and the flames were out of control.

He says the neighbours told him they could not save the woman who lived on her own in the house.

Mike Veen from the Fire and Emergency Services Authority says it is too early to determine how the fire started.

“Unfortunately the house was fully involved, a brick and tile house.”

“There was a total roof collapse and currently we have the fire and investigation officer, police and ambulance in attendance.”

Police say investigations into the cause of the fire and the identity of the deceased are continuing.

Robbie Williams postpones marriage for the third time

London, Mar 8 (ANI): Robbie Williams has postponed his marriage with girlfriend Ayda Field again, after the details of the wedding got leaked, sources say.

The singer had first cancelled plan Valentine”s Day marriage plan after the date was disclosed.

Since then he has been forced to cancel two more dates.

Now, Williams is apparently trying to find out the source of the leaks.

“Robbie and Ayda are desperate to marry and start a new domesticated life together,” the Mirror quoted a source as saying.

The insider added: “But when their first day, February 14th, escaped into the public domain, Rob hit the roof. He has played out his relationship with Ayda largely behind closed doors and wanted it to stay that way.

“They don”t want a huge showbiz wedding with glossy magazines in attendance and flashbulbs going off.

“So it is vitally important to both of them that it stays private with only a handful of people knowing where and when the event will be.

“Two other dates were suggested almost as a test to see if and when they got leaked. He is determined to find the culprit – and cull him or her from their circle of friends.”

Meanwhile, Field can”t wait to get married to the ”Bodies” hitmaker.

She reportedly said: “I can”t wait to marry him. We”re so in love, it”s a case of the sooner the better.”

They are now expected to wed at year-end in a private ceremony in LA. (ANI)

One out of two Brits think England will win 2010 World Cup: Poll

London, Sep. 13 (ANI): One out of two British nationals believe that England can win the 2010 Soccer World Cup, a Sunday Times poll has revealed.

According to the YouGov poll, 49 percent of people believe England’s chances of winning are “excellent” or “good.”

The survey also revealed 20 percent nationals think the team’s chances are “poor,” while 12 percent say they are “hopeless.”

The new found confidence reflects the team’s 5-1 victory over Croatia this week, which sealed qualification for next year’s tournament in South Africa.

Times Online quoted England’s Italian manager Fabio Capello as saying that his minimum target is to reach the World Cup final on July 11 in Johannesburg.

And his dream final would be between England and Italy.

England’s success is being attributed to the discipline Capello has imposed on players, which includes limiting the attendance of WAGs. (ANI)

Mafia may be behind Berlusconi’s sex scandal, claims coalition partner

London, Sept 12 (ANI): Responding to the sex scandal engulfing Silvio Berlusconi, Umberto Bossi, the key coalition partner in the Italian PM’s government, said he believed Mafia had orchestrated all the dirty activities.

“I think everything has been put in place by the Mafia,” Bossi, the leader of the Northern League, said as he arrived at an event in Pian del Re in the north of the country.

He added: “We have introduced very tough laws against the Mafia.

“I already said to Berlusconi, ‘Look out because the Mafia is involved in that; the Mafia organises prostitution’. I am convinced that the Mafia organised this thing here.”

On Thursday, for the first time, Berlusconi admitted that Giampaolo Tarantini, a businessman, had brought “beautiful women” to his parties but denied that he had ever paid for sex, reports The Times.

In May, Berlusconi’s estranged wife, Veronica Lario, had announced that she wanted a divorce from the premier after accusing him of being “not well” and obsessed with young women.

She was apparently furious over his attendance at the 18th birthday party of an aspiring lingerie model, Noemi Letizia.

Later an escort, Patrizia D’Addario, claimed that she and another prostitute had sexual intercourse with the prime minister at his official residence in Rome following a private party. (ANI)

Berlusconi declares himself “Superman”

London, Sept 3 (ANI): Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has declared himself a “Superman”.

While praising his achievements in office and replying back to his critics and estranged wife, Veronica Lario, the 72-year-old said: “I’m not ill.

“You only have to look at what I’ve achieved over the last 15 months in government to see that not only am I not in poor health, I’m Superman.”

In May, Lario had announced that she wanted a divorce from the premier after accusing him of being “not well” and obsessed with young women, reports The Telegraph.

Normal life badly affected in Manipar on first day of general strike

Imphal, Aug.18 (ANI): Normal life was badly affected in different parts of Manipur on the first day of the three-day general strike called by the Apunba Lup, an umbrella organisation of several social organisations, protesting against the killing of youth allegedly by police commmandos in an encounter last month.

Markets, business centers and entertainment houses remained closed, while attendance in government offices was negligible and vehicles largely remained off the road during the first day of general strike.

The Apunba Lup has called the 72-hour strike demanding resignation of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh on moral grounds and dismissal of the commandos involved in the ‘fake encounter’.

Twenty seven-year-old Chungkham Sanjit was allegedly killed by police commandos in “fake encounter” on July 23rd in a market in Imphal. (ANI)

UK primary school creates extra classroom in decommissioned aircraft

London, July 16 (ANI): An England-based primary school, which asked its pupils to come up with ideas for a new outdoor classroom, now has one in the form of a decommissioned commercial aeroplane.

The winged classroom, a refurbished Short S-360, is believed to be the first of its kind in the world, and students at Kingsland Primary School in Bucknall, Stoke-on-Trent, checked in for class in the aircraft for the first time on July 15.

Since its arrival at the school in March, the airliner has been transformed into a flexible teaching space, fitted with interactive whiteboards and laptops and complete with pull-down numbered seats and desks.

Headteacher David Lawrence said that staff at the school had invited pupils to offer ideas for a new outdoor classroom, and an aircraft was one of many quirky suggestions, with a tree house and a castle amongst other structures mooted.

Pupils were also involved in the interior design of the aircraft, in a project dubbed “The King’s Wings” by the school.

“When we realised we needed an extra classroom we asked the children what they wanted and one little boy said an aeroplane so we went and found one and have effectively recycled it to create the world’s first flying classroom,” the Telegraph quoted Lawrence a saying.

The 72ft (22m) long aircraft was lowered into position in the school grounds by a crane.

“What you’re seeing today is the end of 15 months worth of work,” Lawrence said.

“It would have been scrapped so we’ve rescued the aeroplane, which is also what the children thought was important because of the agenda for conservation and things like that.

“The children were talking about powering some of the inside of it with solar panels, and that could be something we develop later,” he revealed.

The headteacher said he was not worried that pupils might be distracted by the novelty of sitting down to lessons in an aeroplane.

“The day it came were really really excited and today they’re really excited because they’ve seen it for the first time and they really want to do lessons in there,” he said.

He said it was “such a buzz” for the children, and much more interesting than lessons in a portable cabin.

“In a couple of weeks it will just be part and parcel of what we do in school. So it’ll be, instead of having a lesson in the hall or the ICT room, it will be lessons in the aeroplane,” he said.

“The children’s imagination has been fired up by the idea and they are enthused and motivated, we are sure that this will lead to improved attendance, give us better and more opportunities for our creative curriculum and raise attainment,” he added. (ANI)

Saint Xavier’s college denies promotion to Dhoni

Ranchi, July 11 (ANI): Mahendra Singh Dhoni might be going great guns on and off the field but that’s no valid reason that he should do well in academics, as Saint Xavier’s college in Ranchi has denied promotion to the cricket captain following his failure to appear in the Bachelor of Commerce part-1 examination.

Ranchi University, to which the college is affiliated, went out of the way relaxing attendance rules last year to enable Dhoni to resume his education after a nine year hiatus.

“He (Dhoni) does not fall into the regular system of education. He comes under the certified system or the assignment system. He can submit his assignments and clear his subjects accordingly,” said Gautam Rudra, a Commerce professor.

But Dhoni has plenty of well-wishers among his classmates, only if their voice would be heard.

“According to me Dhoni should atleast attend the classes, but in case he can’t attend the classes he should be promoted because he is playing for the country and he is making our country proud. So I guess and I think so that he should be promoted to the second year,” said Rohan Pathak. (ANI)

Attacks by critics are ‘bull crap’, says Palin

Dillingham (Alaska), July 8 (ANI): Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has called the attacks by critics ‘ bull crap’, and remains coy about her presidential aspirations.

In her first interview after her announcement that she was quitting office on July 26, 16 months ahead of schedule, Palin criticized both President Obama and the Republican Party.

“The critics want to put you on a course of personal bankruptcy, so you can’t afford to serve,” she said, calling the attacks “bull crap,” she told Fox News.

Palin is in Dillingham, where she was fishing with her husband, Todd, and daughter Piper. Reporters from three other networks were also in attendance.

She said Obama is taking the country in the wrong direction, and while she wouldn’t reveal her future plans, indicated she has fight left in her.

“Average, hard-working Americans need to be able to get out there, unrestrained, and fight for what is right. Fight for energy independence and national security, fight for a smaller government instead of this big government overgrowth that Obama is ushering in,” she said.

On the Republican Party, she said: “Obsessive partisanship has hurt the party. We have so many people who offer advice, but I’m going to continue to be, whether some of them like it or not, pretty darn independent, and not get wrapped up into a strong political machine that hasn’t been extremely successful in some ways.”

Palin also decried the state of the American media and said news coverage of her children was unfair.

Asked if she wanted to be president, she repeated she did not know what her future holds.

“I want to work, right now, for people who are going to work either in office or out of office for the right things. Those principles that build up America, those who are inspired by the values of America, and will not deride or apologize for the values we hold as Americans,” she said. (ANI)

Michael Jackson’s ex-wife not to attend his memorial service

London, July 7 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s ex-wife, Debbie Rowe, will not be attending his memorial service.

The 49-year-old mother of his two eldest kids, Prince and Paris, believes that her attendance would probably distract from the celebration of his life.

And that she will “celebrate Michael’s memory privately”, reports the Sun.

Pop star Justin Timberlake will also not attend the ‘Thriller’ hitmaker’s memorial, despite the efforts of Michael’ s brother, Jermaine, to persuade him to perform.

“Jermaine told Justin he was one of Michael’s favourite performers,” said a source. (ANI)

Migraine headaches linked to bad academic performance

Washington, July 4 (ANI): Teens who suffer from migraine headaches are more likely to get lower grades, and less likely to graduate from high school, or attend college than those who don’t have migraine, according to a study.

Conducted by Joseph Sabia, a professor of Public Policy at American University’s School of Public Affairs, and Daniel Rees, a professor of Economics at the University of Colorado Denver, the study is the first to have examined effect of migraine in teens on future academic achievement.

“We know that migraine headaches can profoundly impact quality of life. Our study offers evidence that they are an important obstacle to long-term academic success. Our results show that migraine sufferers have trouble attending school and have trouble concentrating on the days they do make it to school,” said Sabia.

Scientists examined data on sibling pairs from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health.

They examined the migraine experiences and high school grades of 214 siblings from 105 families.

Information on high school completion and college attendance data was obtained from 280 siblings belonging to 137 families.

Parental reports identified siblings raised in the same household with different migraine experiences.

“By focusing on differences between siblings, we can rule out the possibility that family- level factors such as socioeconomic status are driving the relationship between migraine headache and academic performance,” said Rees.

It was found that suffering from migraine headaches was linked with a 5 percent reduction in high school GPA, a 5 percent reduction in the likelihood of graduating from high school, and a 15 percent reduction in the likelihood of attending college.

Thirty to 40 percent of these reductions could be attributed to excused absences from school, difficulty paying attention in class, and difficulty completing homework.

Non-migraine headaches were not associated with reductions in academic performance.

The results were presented at the 84th Annual Conference of the Western Economic Association International in Vancouver, British Columbia. (ANI)

Britain is no longer a Christian nation, says bishop

London, June 28 (ANI): A Church of England bishop has said that Britain is no longer a Christian nation.

Right Reverend Paul Richardson warned that declining church attendance and the rise in multiculturalism meant that “Christian Britain is dead”.

As one of the Church’s longest-serving bishops, the comments by the assistant Bishop of Newcastle are set to fuel the debate over its future, The Telegraph reports.

The General Synod, the Church’s parliament, will next month consider proposals to cut the number of bishops and senior clergy amid fears over the Church’s finances.

Writing for The Sunday Telegraph, Bishop Richardson said: “Many bishops prefer to turn their heads, to carry on as if nothing has changed, rather than face the reality that Britain is no longer a Christian nation.

“Many of them think that we are still living in the 1950s – a period described by historians as representing a hey day for the established church,” he added.

He said that the Church had lost more than one in ten of its regular worshippers between 1996 and 2006, with a fall from more than one million to 880,000.

“At this rate it is hard to see the church surviving for more than 30 years though few of its leaders are prepared to face that possibility,” said Bishop Richardson.

Nearly half of the population in England regard themselves as belonging to the Church of England, while seven in ten described themselves as Christian in the last census.

However, the Bishop said that the fall in church marriages and baptisms revealed that Britain was no longer a Christian nation.

Bishop Richardson said: “The church is being hit by a double whammy: on the one hand it confronts the challenge of institutional decline but on the other hand it has to face the rise of cultural and religious pluralism in Britain.”

He says that the way the Church responds to this will be “crucial in determining whether it will be able to survive as a viable organisation and make a contribution to national life”.

Lord Carey, the former Archbishop of Canterbury has also delivered a bleak assessment of the future of Christianity in this country, claiming previously that Britain’s Churches are in such serious decline that if they were shops they would have been declared bankrupt long ago. (ANI)
