Major iPhone 4 ordering agonies persist

After a day when some customers gave up trying to buy a new iPhone 4, both AT&T and Apple continued to have major problems handling online orders Tuesday night.

As of 8:30 p.m. ET, AT&T’s Web site was returning an error during the part of the ordering process when a current customer’s account is checked to determine whether he or she is eligible for a new iPhone at the subsidized prices of $199 for a 16GB model or $299 for the 32GB device.

“There was a problem with your request,” the error message reads. “P1015: We’re sorry, but we are experiencing a system error that prevents us from completing your request. For non iPhone related upgrades, please call Customer Care at 1-888-867-4384 and provide the error number at the beginning of this message.”

Order attempts at Apple’s online store at 8:30 p.m. ET were also stymied, as they have been for much of the day.

There, the message popped up during the upgrade eligibility check, which Apple directs to AT&T’s servers. “Your request couldn’t be processed,” Apple’s message read. “We’re sorry, but there was an error processing your request. Please try again later.”

At best, online ordering was spotty all day Tuesday . Although some managed to make it through the several screens at ATT.com or Apple.com to successfully reserve an iPhone 4, many others did not.

Scot Finnie, Computerworld’s editor-in-chief, spent more than 12 hours trying to order an iPhone 4 at Apple’s and AT&T’s sites, but each time encountered a glitch that blocked him from completing the transaction.

A Computerworld reader reported an even more troublesome issue.

“I placed my order over the Web at between 4 and 4:30 a.m. ET, expecting that I would beat the rush,” said the Reverend Dennis Hoffman in an e-mail to Computerworld. “My problems have come, in part, through my bank and its fraud protection system. I was contacted by my bank to confirm whether or not I had made three (3) transactions. All of them were AT&T’s attempt to ding my account for the $300 charge for the phone.”

Hoffman’s bank contacted him because repeated and identical charges are flagged by its anti-fraud system.

“I remain, as of this writing, understandably unsure as to whether my order is truly in the system, and watching my account for more than one draft of the charges for the phone,” Hoffman continued. “AT&T is not the ‘new face of inept.’ …They remain the continual and reigning champ of inept.”

The ordering fiasco is yet another black eye for the iPhone’s exclusive U.S. carrier.

Last Sunday, AT&T had to apologize to tens of thousands of Apple iPad 3G owners after a hacking group said it had scraped more than 100,000 e-mail addresses from the carrier’s servers using an automated script.

The hackers and AT&T have traded accusations since last week over the incident, which the FBI is probing.

Also last week, AT&T’s account management site collapsed for several hours after Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced that the carrier would waive contract requirements to allow more customers to upgrade to the new iPhone 4.

AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel declined to comment on his company’s problems today, but promised that it would release a statement later Tuesday.

Celine Dion pregnant with twins, says husband

(Reuters) – After a failed pregnancy last year, Celine Dion’s wish to have another child looks set to come true with the Canadian singer and her husband announcing that she is pregnant — and expecting twins.

Entertainment | People

Dion’s husband and manager Rene Angelil told People magazine that Dion, 42, is 14 weeks’ pregnant after undergoing six attempts at in vitro fertilization. He said they plan to find out the sex of the babies next month.

“We’re ecstatic. Celine is just hoping for a healthy pregnancy. She was hoping for one baby and the news that we are having two is a double blessing,” Angelil, 68, told People.

Dion and Angelil have a nine-year-old son, Rene Charles, who was also conceived through in vitro fertilization.

Dion, a five-time Grammy Award winner, is among the top-selling singers of all time, having sold more than 200 million albums around the world. Her hits include the “Titanic” theme “My Heart Will Go On” and “If You Asked Me To.”

Number of attempted attacks within U.S. rising – CNN

The number of attempted domestic attacks against the United States over the past nine months has surpassed the number of attempts during any other previous one-year period, CNN reported, citing an unclassified Department of Homeland Security memo.

The memo prepared for law enforcement groups expects operatives in the country to strike at easily accessible targets. It specifically mentioned the Times Square bombing suspect Faisal Shahzad and Najibullah Zazi, who pleaded guilty in February to plotting attacks on New York’s subways, CNN said.

The memo was dated May 21, CNN said in a story that ran on its website late Wednesday.

The Department of Homeland Security also expressed concern about the pace of attempted attacks, saying they were happening inside the United States with “increased frequency.”

It noted a trend in groups such as al Qaeda to use Westerners as operatives and leaders.

Pak blockage of Facebook, YouTube might increase traffic to these sites

Islamabad, May 21 (ANI): Pakistan’s blockage on wildly popular web-sites like YouTube and Facebook will likely have a reverse effect from the one desired by authorities as curious Netizens would log onto these sites to see what the brouhaha is about.

Pakistan’s telecom regulatory body, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has said it found ‘sacrilegious’ content on YouTube, leading them to block it. Incidentally, YouTube has been co-founded by Jawed Karim, a Muslim.

“We have asked the Internet service providers to block more than 450 web links, which contain derogatory material,” The News quoted a PTA spokesman, as saying.

“The action follows our repeated attempts to convince these websites to discard such material,” he added.

He said the PTA had approached the administrators of the websites through emails, however he could not name the officials who had been contacted.

Industry officials, on the other hand, say the authorities have yet to get in touch with the people who run Facebook and YouTube, the report said.

These hasty suppressive tactics are probably not going to be too fruitful, according to industry officials.

“There is no way of stopping this. The day government lifts restriction from these websites, the Internet traffic will double. People will visit them just out of curiosity,” said an advertiser, who deals with Facebook and YouTube. (ANI)

Militant infrastructure in Pakistan still a concern: Antony

New Delhi, May 12 (ANI): Defence Minister A K Antony on Wednesday said Pakistan”s militant infrastructure is still a matter of concern for India.

Reacting to a query about the resumption of talks between India and Pakistan at a time when there is an increase in infiltration attempts across the Line of Control, Antony said such attempts by militants are a matter of concern.

“Talks will continue, but at the same time we are very much concerned about the existence of more than 40 terrorist camps in Pakistan. And, our view is that Pakistan must take sincere and strong steps to dismantle these terrorist outfits,” said Antony after inaugurating the Controllers” Conference of the Defence Accounts Department.

Speaking about the China-India relations, the Defence Minister said that the bilateral relations between the two countries are improving, in spite of the border issue.

“Military relations are improving. We had joint exercise with the Chinese army. Again, we will have joint exercise with them. And this year, our Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar had gone there for discussions,” said Antony.

“So, on the whole, the relations are improving, even though that border dispute is still there. On the whole, our relation with China is comparatively better. Our border is peaceful,” he added. (ANI)

News Ltd boss ‘beat up editor’s ineptitude’

Senior executives at News Limited have been accused of exaggerating and inventing stories to support the dismissal of the former editor-in-chief of Melbourne’s Herald Sun newspaper.

Bruce Guthrie is suing the company for nearly $3 million in an unfair dismissal case.

Both News Limited and the former editor have again been urged to settle out of court.

Acting for Mr Guthrie, Norman O’Bryan SC today went on the attack.

He accused News Limited chief executive John Hartigan of “beating up” tales of Mr Guthrie’s ineptitude to support his dismissal.

Mr O’Bryan said the company had no evidence of a drop in sales of the Herald Sun or that it lagged behind while Mr Guthrie was at the helm.

He went on to accuse Mr Hartigan of not warning the editor of insidious attempts to get rid of him by the managing director Peter Blunden.

Of all three men, Mr O’Bryan argued Mr Guthrie was the most credible witness.

“Unlike Hartigan and Blunden, he never went behind backs. He never privately or secretly conspired to harm anyone else,” he said.

News Limited told Mr Guthrie he had zero future with the company, but the court heard Mr Hartigan had offered to find him more work a day after he was fired.

In ending his contract, Mr Guthrie’s counsel argued he had been robbed of opportunities with both News Limited and the global empire of News Corp.

The judge has reserved his decision and again urged both parties to settle out of court or risk being found to have lied.

Adele Carles questions her future with the Greens

Deep tensions remain in the W-A Greens following the public admission by Fremantle MP Adele Carle of an affair with the former Treasurer Troy Buswell.

Adele Carles returned to state parliament for the first time today since she fronted the media last week about her affair with Mr Buswell.

Ms Carles said she remained battered and bruised from the incident but would not be drawn on her future in the Greens.

“At this stage I’m not sure where I stand with the Greens, I honestly don’t know,” she said.

Senior Greens MP Giz Watson was also keen to put last week’s events behind her.

“Despite, you know, attempts to portray me as the baddie in this story, I just think it’s you know, we’re working together, we’re working out a way of moving forward,” she said.

“That’s how we work as Greens, its been very tough.”

Giz Watson says Ms Carles is not returning her phone calls.

Gogoi invites all rebel groups for talks

Guwahati, May 4 (ANI): Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has said that all rebel groups, including the elusive commander-in-chief of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), Paresh Baruah, ought to respond to his invitation for talks in the interest of peace in the region.

Addressing a press conference here Gogoi said: “We want him (Paresh Baruah) as well to come for talks. If he doesn”t come then definitely we would make attempts to arrest him. We would take all the required actions. We have been asking him to come for talks. We want ULFA… anybody can come for talks”.

He also described the arrest of Ranjan Daimary alias D R Nabla, the chief of the anti-talks faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), as a prized catch.

“He is a prized catch. After sometimes back, a few leaders of ULFA mainly Vice President, Arabinda Rajkhowa (ULFA Chairman) and others, also after that it is a very big, very big catch. These are the two dreaded organisations in Assam. So definitely it is a very big catch, and it will so a very long way in bringing peace in the state of Assam,” observed Gogoi.

Answering a question about base of rebel groups in Myanmar and Bhutan, Gogoi said that there is rebel groups base in Myanmar as well as in Bangladesh but not much is known about Bhutan.

“We don”t have any information about Bhutan, we have information about Myanmar. There is base of ULFA and other rebel groups as well and there is base of these rebel groups in Bangladesh as well. So we are in conversation with the Myanmar government about this issue. We are seeking support from them. But it can be noted that even Myanmar government has less control in those areas,” Gogoi added.

He further hoped to busting of all the hideouts in Myanmar and Bangladesh. (ANI)

Karun Chandhok given five-place grid penalty for Chinese GP

Shanghai, Apr 17(ANI): Indian driver Karun Chandhok has been handed over a five-place grid penalty for Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai after the Hispania Racing Team broke a seal on his car’s gearbox following Friday practice sessions.

The 26-year-old must take a penalty, as the team opened the gearbox to work on it without an FIA official in attendance, which is a breach of regulations.

However, the penalty is unlikely to affect the rookie driver, who finished 24th and last after the qualifying session at the Shanghai International Circuit, Xinhua news agency reports.

Chandhok and his team-mate Bruno Senna were 15th and 16th respectively in the Malaysian Grand Prix, a fortnight ago, and have only once qualified off the back row of the grid in three attempts. (ANI)

Legal stoush brews over schoolies ban bid

A holiday letting agent on the Gold Coast says he will seek a court injunction against attempts to stop schoolies booking into a Surfers Paradise apartment building.

Helensvale firm Worldtourism coordinates the holiday letting at the Condor Apartments.

Worldtourism chief executive officer Paul Whitehead says the body corporate recently voted to effectively ban schoolies from the building.

Mr Whitehead says he will seek an injunction against the decision as he believes it could amount to age discrimination.

“Whether we like it or we don’t like it, Schoolies has a very positive financial impact on the Gold Coast,” he said.

“This is a bit of a test case because it has the potential to have an effect on everybody else who manages buildings on the Gold Coast.”

Mr Whitehead says there have been very few problems with schoolies at the building and he says issues in Surfers Paradise are more likely to arise from the sheer numbers of people.

“The majority of people who come to the Gold Coast for Schoolies want to come and have fun but in a safe environment,” he said.

“When you get 45,000 people merging on the Gold Coast within a very small period of time you’re going to get problems. Whether those people are 18 or whether those people are 50 years old you’re still going to get problems.”

Gold Coast lawyer Michael Kyle, who represents the building’s body corporate, has rejected suggestions that residents of a Surfers Paradise apartment block want to ban schoolies from the building.

Mr Kyle says it is insisting the letting agent meet its responsibility to manage the behaviour of tenants.

“Some schoolies misbehave and some of the schoolies that stay in Condor misbehave but this is not about schoolies, this is about managing the behaviour of people who stay in the units as tenants which sadly that does involve some schoolies,” she said.

Outgoing Army Chief expects enhanced attempts of infiltration

New Delhi, Mar. 31 (ANI): Outgoing Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor on Wednesday expressed confidence that security forces would be able to thwart infiltration attempts by militants from across the Line of Control (LoC) during the summer.

“We do expect enhanced attempts at infiltration this summer and the trend for that are already obvious,” said Kapoor after paying homage at the Amar Jawan Jyoti in New Delhi.

“The infiltrations are aided and abetted by our western neighbour but we are quite sure that the security forces would be able to take care of any such attempts at infiltration and would be able to ensure a degree of peace and stability in the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir as has been the trend for the last year and a half and two years,” he added.

Intelligence officials say Pakistan-based militant groups have stepped up efforts to infiltrate the region across the Line of Control (LoC) or military ceasefire line after snow started melting on the high Himalayan mountain passes.

General Kapoor, who is retiring as the Army Chief on Wednesday was accorded a guard of honour.

Army Chief feels infiltration continues due to repeated attempts made by militants

New Delhi, Mar 30 (ANI): Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor said on Tuesday that militants become successful in infiltrating into the Indian side of the Line of Control because of their continued attempts.

General Kapoor made the statement after handing over the baton of Chairman”s office in Chiefs of Staff Committee (COC) to Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik here.

“This is a matter of understanding that if infiltrators continue to make their attempts to enter the Indian side, as they are being supported by their organisations, they will become successful at some point of time. But whenever they tried to infiltrate, we detected them,” he said.

“Almost eight militants got killed during the encounters by our deployed troops. The rest of the militants fled towards the other side of Line of Control. So this is a good job done by our security forces. The militants would continue with their infiltration attempts. We would be able to take actions only if they would come towards us,” he added.

Eight militants of the Laskhar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen were killed during an encounter on March 23 in Kern sector of Jammu and Kashmir”s Kupwara district. (ANI)

How Gilani promoted his “jail buddy” to a plum Govt. post

Islamabad, Mar. 29 (ANI): Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has reportedly rewarded a junior jail official with a jumbo promotion in the federal government as the man used to provide laptop and movie CDs to Gilani when he was at the Adiala Jail.

Faisal Nisar Chaudhry, a junior officer in Prison Department was first called to work at the Prime Minister’s Secretariat on deputation as Liaison Officer, and now, he has been made Deputy Secretary, The Nation reports.

Interestingly, the association continues as Chaudhry despite having been designated Deputy Secretary continues to work as the Liaison Officer with Gilani, the report adds.

Sources claim that immediately after Gilani’s appointment as the Prime Minister of Pakistan, various attempts were made to induct Chaudhary directly into the Secretariat.

However, the then Principal Secretary and Establishment Secretary had expressed reservations to induct a junior non-concerned officer in Secretariat Group.

But now, sources say, the matter has been resolved as Gilani’s “jail buddy” has assumed charge as Deputy Secretary. (ANI)

Council accused of poor fire response

The South Australian Country Fire Service (CFS) alleges a lack of help from Port Lincoln Council during the city’s recent bushfires.

The CFS accused the council of not responding during the fires, which destroyed 13 homes just before Christmas.

Last night’s council meeting considered a letter from the CFS which says it wanted council earthmoving equipment at the height of the fires but a council officer wanted to discuss order numbers and who would be liable for any damage.

The letter says attempts were also made to contact council staff without success and says the lack of responsiveness was in direct contrast to the neighbouring district council.

Port Lincoln Council chief executive Geoff Dodd says he was at the Zone Emergency Centre during the fires and no requests were received from the CFS for council equipment or help.

He says the comments are disappointing, poorly researched and insulting to council staff.

Time coming for sanctions against Iran, says Merkel

(Reuters) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Monday the time has come to impose new sanctions on Iran over its disputed nuclear activity.

World

“I have made clear that we are entering a phase where there should be sanctions against Iran,” Merkel told a joint news conference with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri.

Iran had rejected all constructive offers from foreign governments to resolve the dispute over its uranium enrichment activities, she said.

Western nations suspect Iran wants to use atomic technology to build a bomb, but Tehran denies that and says it is only interested in civilian power generation.

Western powers want the U.N. Security Council to approve a resolution imposing new sanctions on Tehran but is facing some resistance from China.

Some EU officials have said they need to be prepared to move rapidly to implement their own measures to rein in Iran’s nuclear program if attempts to win U.N. backing drag on for too long.

Hooker vaults into world indoor final

World and Olympic champion Steve Hooker needed only one jump to cruise into the pole vault final at the world indoor athletic championships in Qatar.

Fellow Australian Scott Martin qualified for the shot put final, while compatriot Petrina Price bowed out in the first round of the women’s high jump.

Hooker cleared 5.60 metres on his first attempt to make the nine-man final, which will commence at 12.15am (AEDT) on Sunday in Doha.

Aiding the Western Australian’s cause as he chases the only major gold medal missing from his collection, European indoor champion Renaud Lavillenie missed the final after bombing on all three attempts at 5.60m.

“It was a hard morning,” Hooker said.

“We got here at 6.15am and qualifying finished at 12.20pm.

“Now I need to get some rest and prepare for tomorrow’s final. I know what I must do.

“It was a shock that Lavillenie didn’t make it through but it will be a very competitive final.”

Martin left it late before turning in a season’s best throw of 20.61m to advance to the shot put final.

“My first round was terrible, 19.51m,” he said.

“It felt technically good but it just came out soft. I had to harden up.

“I knew I had to improve on the final throw.”

American Christian Cantwell qualified on his first attempt in the shot put with a throw of 20.72m.

The outdoor world champion is looking for his third world indoor title.

In other events, Croatia’s defending indoor high jump world champion Blanka Vlasic was flawless in qualifying for the final.

Vlasic cleared all heights up to 1.92m to reach the final, as did Ruth Beitia of Spain and Marina Aitova of Kazakhstan.

Australia’s Price cleared 1.85m before missing three attempts at 1.89m to finish out of the finals in 13th place.

Increased tourism numbers expected

The State Government is confident that its new tourism campaign ‘Experience Extraordinary’ will be more successful than previous attempts to increase tourism numbers to West Australia.

The Tourism Minister Liz Constable says the first ‘Extraordinary Taxi’ campaign, which was launched at Cottesloe Beach this morning, is an innovative and effective way to show all that WA has to offer.

The taxi and its Bunbury driver, Doug Slater, will drive the winners of a competition 6,500 kilometres around WA to tourism destinations.

Dr Constable says the campaign utilises the internet to promote the State.

“Using the internet where we know 77 per cent of people plan their holidays and even book their holidays and plane fares and so on through the internet.”

“Using the internet in the way we have from the very beginning is the key to the success of this campaign.

Lahore, Sep.19 (ANI): Experienced Pakistan all-rounder Abdul Razzaq is disappointed over his non-selection for the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa.

Razzaq said he was surprised at not being selected.

“It came as a huge setback to learn that I was not in the final team. Since my comeback to the national team, I had been working very hard to play in this elite tournament,” Razzaq said.

“It is a big tournament and you get a chance to prove yourself against the top teams. I was working hard to convince everyone I should be in the side,” The Daily Times quoted Razzaq, as saying.
