Mozilla re-patches Firefox 3.6 to fix plug-in problem

For the second time in two months, Mozilla on Friday rushed out a fix for Firefox to patch a problem with a browser update issued just days before.

Mozilla shipped Firefox 3.6.8 on Friday to patch a single security problem and deal with what Mike Beltzner, director of Firefox, called “a stability problem that affected some pages with embedded plug-ins.”

The company had released Firefox 3.6.7 two days earlier .

Mozilla patched one critical security bug in the newest update, according to an advisory also published Friday. “In certain circumstances, properties in the plug-in instance’s parameter array could be freed prematurely, leaving a dangling pointer that the plug-in could execute, potentially calling into attacker-controlled memory,” the warning read.

The bug surfaced in one of the 16 patches that Mozilla applied to Firefox earlier in the week.

Details of that vulnerability, and the stability problem that Beltzner mentioned, were not available to the public as of Saturday.

Several Firefox users, however, had filed numerous reports to the browser’s support forum of problems with Adobe’s Flash Player plug-in after updating to Firefox 3.6.7.

“I updated Firefox from 3.6.2 to 3.6.7 and I REGRET IT!,” wrote a user identified only as “Steve” in a support forum message posted Friday morning. “I can’t watch YouTube. Every time the video is about to start Firefox freezes and I can’t do nothing besides going into Task Manager and killing it from there. THIS SUCKS!”

Friday’s patch-and-release was the second in two months for Mozilla. Just three days after updating Firefox to version 3.6.4 in late June, Mozilla delivered another update because people playing Farmville complained that their browser was shutting down the Facebook game. The company said that a new “out of process plug-ins” feature, designed to keep the browser running when a plug-in crashed, was kicking in too quickly.

The older Firefox 3.5 browser, which was upgraded to version 3.5.11 last Tuesday, is not affected by the security bug or the plug-in stability problem.

Users can update to Firefox 3.6.8 by downloading the new edition or by selecting “Check for Updates” from the Help menu in the browser.

Chen admitted the charges. It is not immediately known whether he will make an appeal. (ANI)

I forgive the attacker, says Sri Sri Ravishankar

A day after an attempt was made on his life by an unidentified gunman, spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravishankar on Monday said he was happy with the existing security and has forgiven the attacker, whom the police are yet to identify.

Speaking to the press at his ashram this morning, Ravishankar said, “I heard a loud noise. But I was in my usual calm self. My driver had a premonition that there could be some kind of attack on me”.

The spiritual leader on Sunday escaped a bid on his life when an unidentified gunman shot at his car when he was returning after delivering a discourse.

Ravishankar said, “I do not have enemies. However, whoever has done this, I forgive him. I give him amnesty. I invite him to join our satsang course. I will teach him meditation and Sudarshan Kriya”.

The 54-year-old Art of Living founder said he was happy with the existing security cover, which police stepped up after last evening’s incident.

The shell fired by the fire arm has been recovered, police said.

Pak’s latest flip-flop, says it never demanded Kasab’s extradition

Islamabad, May 7 (ANI): In yet another flip-flop, Pakistan has denied asking India to handover the lone November 2008 Mumbai attacker Ajmal Amir Kasab to it.

Talking to reporters after a special anti-terror court in Mumbai awarded death sentence to Kasab, Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit said Islamabad had never asked for his extradition.

When asked about Kasab’s death penalty, Basit said Pakistan maintains that it was important to bring the perpetrators of the dastardly act to justice.

“Pakistan has strongly condemned the horrific attack. It’s important that the culprits are brought to justice,” The Daily Times quoted Basit, as saying.

“We would appreciate that our legal experts go through the detailed judgement,” he added.

It is worth mentioning here that days ago Pakistan had handed over six dossiers to India regarding developments made in the 26/11 probe and sought the extradition of Kasab, and Fahim Ansari, an Indian accused of conducting recce of places targeted by terrorists.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik had also said India should give Pakistan access to Kasab to facilitate the trial of seven terrorists arrested in the country in connection with the Mumbai attacks.

“Kasab’s statement is of paramount importance in the Mumbai attack case… it is an important document for the court and we need it,” Malik had said earlier.

During a meeting with Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Sharat Sabharwal last month, Malik had stressed that Kasab should be extradited to Pakistan after his trial in India is over, as his statement would prove to be of great importance in the prosecution of the seven suspects, including Lashkar-e-Taiba’s (LeT) operations commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi. Execute a cyber attack with kits for just $700!

Washington, Apr 20 (ANI): Cybercrimes are no longer the domain of the tech-savvy—just splash out 700 dollars and one can buy an attack kit online, reveals an internet security report.

Symantec, which monitors one-third of the Internet through its software, has discovered a marked increase in sales of crimeware – or attack kits – in the past 12 months.

Attack kits automatically create customised malicious code designed to steal any type of information.

An attack kit, Zeus, can be purchased online for 700 dollars in an underground economy forum.

The kit allows the user to access infected computers and steal email and banking details and passwords.

Last year, it sent out phishing messages to 1.5 million Facebook users and nine million phishing emails.

“The kits have lowered the entry point into cybercrime,” Fox News quoted said Symantec vice president and managing director Craig Scroggie as saying.

“They make it easier for an unskilled attacker to compromise a computer and steal information, whereas in the past you needed to have the skill to write these things.”

Scroggie said “tens of thousands” of the attack kits had been sold, helping create 90,000 unique variations of the Zeus toolkit.

Other known crimeware tools include the Fragus Exploit Kit and the Spyeye. (ANI)

Brit girl risks Dubai jail by telling cops she was raped after boozy night out

London, April 19 (ANI): A British girl is said to have risked being jailed in Dubai by telling cops that she was raped after a boozy night out.

The 24-year-old trading company executive, who has been identified only as Lucy, said that the 30-year-old Arab man insisted on giving her a lift home after a night out drinking with pals at the Dubai Marina.

And then he allegedly drove her to the remote area and attacked her, before taking her back to her flat and raping her again on her bed.

The accused man told police that she agreed to sleep with him, and now if her account of what happened is not believed, she could face prison for drinking and having sex outside marriage in the strict Muslim state.

“She told police she screamed and cried out begging him to stop during both attacks which were entirely against her will,” the Sun quoted a Dubai court source as saying.

“She went straight to the nearest police station and reported the sex attack at 3.20am the same day,” the source said.

Cops were immediately able to find the alleged attacker, named only as Saif, as the woman had saved his mobile number when they were introduced earlier in the night.

“The case will be heard in full before a judge who will decide who is telling the truth, but the girl may face difficulties if her story is not believed,” the source revealed.

“She is still regarded as the victim at this stage, though she has already admitted being drunk, which is itself an offence in Dubai.

“And if the court finds in the man”s favour, she could face a charge of having unlawful sex as well which might land her in jail for a year followed by deportation,” the source added.

The alleged rape in January is the latest to spark anxiety among ex-pats in Dubai.

A date for the rape trial will be set later this year. (ANI)

Afghan soldier opens fire, wounds 1 NATO soldier

KABUL, April 11 (Reuters) – An Afghan soldier opened fire on NATO troops, lightly wounding one alliance soldier, the international force in Afghanistan said on Sunday, the latest in a string of attacks by rogue Afghan forces.

Major Marcin Walczak, a spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, said the Afghan soldier fled after opening fire on a group of NATO and other Afghan troops in Ghazni province, southwest of Kabul, late on Saturday.

NATO did not identify the nationality of the wounded soldier. The NATO-led force in Ghazni is mainly manned by Polish troops.

A Taliban spokesman using the name Zabihullah Mujahid said the Afghan attacker had joined the insurgent movement after witnessing “brutalities against Afghans”, and the man he had wounded was Polish.

NATO forces have been attacked several times in the past by rogue Afghan security force members. In each case, the Taliban have claimed to be behind the attacks and that members of the group have infiltrated Afghan security forces.

In November, an Afghan police trainee killed five British soldiers at a checkpoint. In December, an Afghan soldier killed and American and wounded two Italians at a joint base. (Editing by Alex Richardson) (For more Reuters coverage of Afghanistan and Pakistan, see: here)

Twins, 13, refused bail over tourist’s bashing

Thirteen-year-old twins are among four boys who have been refused bail over an assault that has left a Scottish tourist in a coma in Sydney.

Police say the 25-year-old victim, Mark Willis, was returning from a night out with his girlfriend when he was attacked around 3:30am yesterday.

Officers say the pair got into an argument with a group of about 10 teenagers after getting off a bus at Rockdale train station, in Sydney’s south.

Police say Mr Willis was hit in the head a number of times and fell to the ground, smashing his head on the footpath.

He is in an induced coma at St George Hospital after emergency neurosurgery.

About 3:00pm yesterday, police say they spotted a 13-year-old boy at Hurstville who fit the description of the main attacker. He was arrested and charged with maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm and affray.

His 13-year-old brother went to Hurstville Police Station with his parents in the evening and was charged with assault and affray.

Officers arrested two other boys, aged 16 and 17, around 8:30pm and charged them with affray.

The four boys were kept in custody overnight and have been refused bail this afternoon at Parramatta Children’s Court to appear in court again next month.

Mr Willis and his girlfriend, Jane McLean, were halfway through a working holiday from Scotland.

Police say the victim’s parents are preparing to travel to Sydney.

Police hunt man over indecent assault spate

New South Wales Police believe the same man may be responsible for a number of indecent assaults on women in Sydney’s south over the past several months.

Officers say a woman was followed, pushed to the ground, assaulted and robbed by a man at Woolooware in the early hours of Sunday March 14.

Early in the morning of February 6, a man followed a group of women as they left a fast-food outlet at Kirrawee and later assaulted one of them.

And police are also investigating two other cases which happened on the same day in October last year.

In the first case, a woman was indecently assaulted in a park at Gymea and about three hours later another woman was followed home and approached by a man but he left.

In all of the assaults the attacker has been described as white, slim with short or ear-length brown hair in his mid 20s to mid 30s.

All the assaults happened in the early hours of a Sunday morning.

Acting Superintedent Damian Henry says police are taking measures to prevent any further attacks.

“We’ve increased our patrols, particularly in the early hours of the morning,” he said.

Anyone with information about the man is urged to contact Sutherland Police via Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Offensive military technology does not lead to shorter wars

Washington, March 30 (ANI): A new doctoral thesis from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, has shown that military technology that is offensive rather than defensive in nature does not lead to shorter wars.

For long, researchers have thought that offensive military technology, such as armoured cars and attack jets, makes it easier to shorten the duration of a war.

It is also generally perceived that when the offensive technology is more effective than the defensive technology, it is more advantageous to start a war.

“While this may be seen in some wars where the attacker is clearly superior, it is not true on average. This means that the improved military technology has not resulted in any advantages for the attacking force, at least not in terms of war duration,” said Marco Nilsson, who recently earned his PhD from the Department of Political Science at the University of Gothenburg.

To investigate the effect of offensive technology on war duration, Nilsson statistically analysed all wars in the state system from 1817 to 1992.

Interestingly, he did not find any effect at all.

“I found that, in reality, the potential advantages of attack-oriented technology is limited by for example terrain, technological development, training of military personnel, climate, weather and norms,” said Nilsson.

“Due to these limitations, attack-oriented technology normally does not allow a state to run over an enemy as easily as expected. Unless the attacked country collapses right away, the duration of most wars is decided at the negotiation table,” he added.

Nilsson’s study of four different wars (the Winter War 1939, the Continuation War 1941-1943, the Iran-Iraq War 1980-1988 and the war between India and Pakistan 1965) shows that states do not always base their demands at the negotiation table on military capacity.

“A major problem arises when a state has offensive expectations that do not match what is actually seen on the battlefield. These seemingly unrealistic expectations can for example be a result of a conviction that God will step in and influence the outcome of a war,” said Nilsson.

“Another reason may be that a country for some reason expects its offensive ability to soon improve,” he added.

Unfortunately, some states start wars expecting their attack-oriented technology to warrant quick success.

Therefore, too much confidence in offensive technology may increase the likelihood of new wars and speed up arms racing, all due to a misunderstanding among decision makers. (ANI)

Sydney serial ”breast grabber” strikes again

Melbourne, March 24 (ANI): A man suspected of indecently assaulting women in the streets of Sydney has struck for the fourth time.

The suspected serial breast grabber was said to have attacked a 19-year-old woman walking on Crawley Street, Merrylands before fleeing to a nearby street.

The latest incident comes after three other similar indecent assaults were reported in Merrylands and nearby Guildford, The Age reported.

All the three victims revealed they were approached by a man who grabbed their breasts before disappearing.

The attacks have prompted police to warn women from treading the streets on their own near train stations.

Acting Superintendent Adam Phillips said: “On all four occasions the females that have made those reports have all reported the same type of incidents occurring to each one of them.”

The attacker was described as a thin man of Indian appearance, aged between 25 to 28, of average height, with black, short, unkempt hair, a wispy black beard and a large nose. (ANI)

Doctor hacks 8 children to death in China

A former doctor with a history of mental illness has hacked eight children to death with a machete and injured five others at a primary school in south-east China, state media reports.

The attacker was identified as Zheng Minsheng, a 41-year-old who had worked at a community clinic until June, Xinhua news agency quoted the local government in the city of Nanping as saying.

Zheng attacked the children at the entrance of the school as they arrived in the morning.

He was eventually restrained by passers-by and school security guards before police arrested him. No motive for the attack was given.

Three children died at the scene and five others succumbed to their injuries in hospital.

The five who survived were said to be in a stable condition, the report said, without giving any ages or other details.

The school in Fujian province, which has more than 2,000 students, was closed after the incident.

Classes were to resume on Wednesday and 20 psychologists had been assigned to help students and teachers, the deputy head of the municipal education bureau said.

I wasn’t the only abuse victim: Hey Dad! star

Former Hey Dad! star Sarah Monahan says she was not the only cast member sexually assaulted behind the scenes of the hit show.

Monahan, who played schoolgirl Jenny Kelly, was nine when she began work on the series, which aired on the Seven Network from 1987 to 1994.

She told Woman’s Day magazine last week that a man who worked on the show fondled her and exposed himself to her.

She did not name the man nor did she say if he was a member of the cast or crew, but she did describe him variously as “big”, “powerful” and “well respected”.

Speaking on the Nine Network on Monday, Monahan said there were other other victims among the Hey Dad! cast.

“I guess I was the smallest and I know I wasn’t the only one. The others are just still not going to speak about it,” she said.

Monahan said she was her family’s breadwinner following the death of her father shortly before Hey Dad! began its run.

She said she was fearful she would be forced out of work if she spoke up about the alleged perpetrator.

“I knew he was a dirty old man. I knew it. But I was paying the rent essentially, so there wasn’t much you could do,” she said.

“And it was always, ‘keep it hushed because this is the most successful show on television and people don’t want to know that’.

“A lot of people knew, but it was ‘you can’t talk about it, you can’t go public, you can’t press charges’.

“Then, ‘he’s a very powerful person’ and it becomes he said-she said.”

Another alleged victim of the man has made similar allegations to Nine, saying they were inspired by Monahan to come forward.

Monahan said she intended to go to the police with that person to tell their stories.

“I think that [the alleged attacker] should definitely burn in hell. I think they should go to jail,” she said.

Nine confirmed a NSW Police detective superintendent is investigating the allegations.

Man to front court accused of armed home invasion

A 31-year-old Ashmont man answered a knock at his door early on Saturday night to find a balaclava-clad man who pushed his way in armed with a long-bladed knife.

Police say the alleged attacker threw liquid at the man’s face, causing a burning sensation, and the occupant then slipped over.

Police say the attacker attempted to bind the occupant’s hands but the man later managed to flee the house and raise the alarm.

A 28-year-old man is in custody waiting to face Wagga Local Court today on charges that include being a convicted felon armed with intent to commit an indictable offence and aggravated entry of a dwelling.
