Blood donation camp to support Chiranjeevi

Hyderabad, May 14 (ANI): In a bid to register their support for superstar-turned-politician Chiranjeevi, youth in Hyderabad donated blood at Chiranjeevi Eye and Blood Bank on Thursday.

Enthusiastic for the success of Chiranjeevi’s Party, 148 youngsters came forward at a special camp organized by the blood bank.

“We want to become independent. We want to establish his Praja Rajyam Party (PRP). Once we win 148 seats, it would be easy to do so. That’s why 148 members came here to give blood and pray to the esteemed god-’Please give him power’,” said Rayudu, a blood donor.

Elated with the success of the blood donation camp, Praja Rajyam party leaders expressed confidence to do well in the assembly elections as well.

“This (blood donation camp) is for the success of the PRP in elections. We have had a great election and we are very much confident that we are going to get success but before getting success we have to show our dedication for the party and commitment for the party,” said Shobharani, Praja Rajyam leader.

Bangalore, Apr 19 (PTI) Congress candidate from Rapthadu assembly seat of Andhra Pradesh was arrested by Bangalore police today in connection with an attempt to murder case registered against him 12 years ago. A single Orissa royal family of several political hues

Balangir (Orissa), Apr 16 (ANI): Members of Singhdeo, the royal family of Balangir in Orissa, are contesting against each other in the general elections to the Lok Sabha and the state legislature.
Three-time Member of Parliament Sangeeta Singhdeo of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is facing competition from another member of the royal family, Kalikesh Singhdeo.

Kalikesh Singhdeo happens to be her brother-in-law and also a member of the Orissa legislature, representing the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) party from Saintala constituency.

For the Patnagarh assembly seat, Kanak Vardhan Singhdeo, Sangeeta Singhdeo’s husband is contesting against his younger brother’s wife Prakriti Devi Singhdeo.

No wonder, addressing an electioneering rally, Sangeeta Singhdeo called the electoral battle in the family as a soap opera.

She is not particularly happy with Prakriti Singhdeo contesting against her husband.

“Whatever she is doing is rather unfortunate. We are a democracy. Anyone can contest elections. Even I am a politician and the elder daughter-in-law of a royal family. But I am doing politics with a positive attitude. She was campaigning in a different constituency during the municipal elections. She could have contested from there. If so, we would not have faced any problem,” said Sangeeta.

Adding to all this is the matriarch of the family, Premlata Kumari Devi.

Interestingly, she is not campaigning for her son, Kanak Vardhan Singhdeo but her daughter-in-law, Prakriti Singhdeo!

As for her sister-in-law’s (Sangeeta Singhdeo) grouse at Prakriti Singhdeo entering the poll fray, the latter contended that the people wanted her to contest.

“I did not choose the Patnagarh seat, but the people called me here. During municipal elections, I saw the constituency and the condition. People asked me to contest from here,” said Prakriti Singhdeo.
About a couple of months ago, Premlata Devi had written a letter to the BJP chief L.K Advani, urging him not to give BJP tickets to Sangeeta Singhdeo and Kanak Vardhan Singhdeo.

She had even mentioned that she would campaign against them if they were nominated by the party. By Sharda Lahangir (ANI)

National Conference undecided about Srinagar Lok Sabha candidate

Srinagar, Apr 13 (ANI): National Conference on Monday suggested its President Farooq Abdullah and Srinagar Municipal Corporation Chairman Salman Sagar for the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat.

Talking to reporters here, Farooq Abdullah said that the final decision on who would contest the Srinagar seat rests on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

Claiming that his active role in politics helps him in keeping young and fit, Abdullah said, “My life will end fighting elections.”

Farooq Abdullah had contested from two assembly constituencies in last assembly elections. He had later contested the Rajya Sabha polls from the state.

Abdullah also named candidates for the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat and two assembly seats of Sonawar and Hazratbal.

He informed that Sharief-ud-Din Shariq would be the NC candidate for the Baramulla Lok Sahba seat, where Ghulam Nabi Shaheen, is the sitting party MP.

Dr Mustafa Kamal, he said, would contest by-polls for the Hazratbal assembly seat and Muhammad Yasin Shah would be the NC candidate for the Sonawar assembly seat by-elections. (ANI)

Poll nomination process to begin in Delhi Saturday

Fri, Apr 10 04:38 PM

New Delhi, April 10 (IANS) The Delhi State Election Commission Friday announced that the nomination process for candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections will begin Saturday.

Details of the nomination process, which will culminate April 18, will be available in the commission’s website, Delhi’s chief electoral officer Satbir Silas Bedi said.

‘All the details of the process, names of the returning officers to who the nomination papers may be submitted and addresses will be up on our website,’ she added.

For voters, assembly polls take primacy

HYDERABAD: Ashok Kumar (name changed) was sounded off for the Secunderabad Lok Sabha by the Prajarajyam. But he declined the offer and instead
switched over to another constituency. Reason: He felt that his party was not strong in the assembly segments in Secunderabad. “It would be difficult for me to win from here, even though I may have been a strong candidate. Our electorate is not so mature. They cast their vote for the Lok Sabha for the same party as they do for the assembly,” Kumar told STOI. Ashok Kumar’s opinion was echoed by many other Lok Sabha candidates in the state.

“I know that ultimately my fate depends on the performance of candidates for assembly seats that form part of my Lok Sabha constituency. Therefore, I need to keep them energised,” said a Congress candidate who does not want to be identified.

Political analysts say that this time in Andhra Pradesh, more than ever before, the electorate is unlikely to make a distinction between the assembly and the Lok Sabha elections.

STOI’s check at the ground level reflected this reality. For example in Tirupati, a manager when asked about the prospects of candidates for the Tirupati Lok Sabha seat was nonplussed.

“Chiranjeevi,” he muttered and had to be reminded that the query was about the Lok Sabha and not about the assembly seat that the mega star is contesting. In the same way when Raju, a waiter at a hotel in Medak quizzed about the polls named – very confidently -the assembly candidate who he thought would win. But remained confused when pressed to reply about his favourite for the Lok Sabha. “I do not know,” he said as if he was not even aware that poll for the Parliament was being held.

Analysts said that this reality of the assembly poll being supreme is the reason for two Union ministers, Renuka Chowdhary and Pallam Raju, moving heaven and earth to change some candidates who had been named to contest assembly segments that formed part of their Lok Sabha constituencies. “The duo understood that with weak or inimical candidates their chances would be marred. Hence their extreme reactions,” an analyst said.
The reasons for the electorate not making a distinction between an assembly vote and a Lok Sabha vote is deeply sociological and a reflection of the way they see the polity. “India is a huge country and each state has an ethos of its own.

Each state is also self-contained. This is true of politics as well. Most people do not look beyond Hyderabad. New Delhi is a far off place,” explained an analyst. The reality is also portrayed by the regional press whose front page mostly covers the state of affairs pertaining to Andhra Pradesh.

“Decisions taken by the state government impact the people directly. Centre’s decisions are perceived not to have an indirect effect. That is why the greater interest in assembly elections,” reasons an IAS officer.
The Parliament elections would come into focus, if there is a strong national issue that becomes central to the elections like, say, national integrity.

But this time around there is nothing of this sort, leading to the Lok Sabha poll getting relegated to the background.

On the contrary, the assembly elections have become more interesting what with the expectations of a three way fight.

Nandigram still simmers

The Talpati canal is still the border. On one side in Nandigram town, dotted by Trinamool Congress flags.

On the other is Khejuri, where the CPM’s hammer and sickle sign is visible everywhere. On the surface the area may appear normal, with its green paddy fields and bustling markets, but a little probing reveals that the wounds inflicted two years ago have yet to heal.

Nandigram forms part of the Tamluk Lok Sabha constituency, a CPM bastion which it has never lost since 1980, except in the 1996 Lok Sabha polls. For the last three terms it has been held by Laxman Seth, a CPM strongman of the area.

But this time may be different. In a hard fought contest the Trinamool’s Fatima Bibi wrested the Nandigram assembly seat in a by election in January this year.

Earlier the Trinamool had also won a sweeping victory in the panchayat polls. While voters in the other assembly segments of Tamluk may yet neutralise Nandigram and enable Seth to retain his seat, the contest will certainly not be easy for him.

The dramatic change of attitude towards the CPM follows the gory skirmishes of 2007, when local farmers dug in their heels and refused to part with their lands for an ambitious 10,000 acre chemical hub the CPM state government wanted to build there. Led by the Trinamool, under the banner of the Bhoomi Uchched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC), they cut off government access to the area, proclaiming it a liberated zone, refusing to relent even after the government announced it was abandoning its industrial plans there.

First in March 2007 and again in November, CPM cadres, backed by the state police, stormed the area and finally broke the BUPC’s resistance. “A bullet hit my throat while I was trying to rescue my sister on March 14,” said Abhijit Samanta of Sonachura village.

“I was in hospital for nine months, operated upon eight times. Even now I’m far from fit.

” His family used to be a CPM supporters, but no longer. “After what the Marxists did here, we have decided we want to throw them out of Nandigram,” said his brother Debjit.

Many are convinced that the CPM still has scores to settle with Nandigram residents. “If the CPM wins, it will try to paint Nandigram red again,” said Sankharani Gol, who was hospitalized for 25 days after CPM goons beat him up during the agitation days.

Late Akali minister’s son to contest as independent

Chandigarh, April 3 (IANS) Just a day after immersing the ashes of his father, senior cabinet minister and Akali Dal leader Kanwaljit Singh, Jasjit Singh Bunny Friday resigned from Punjab’s ruling party and announced he would contest the Lok Sabha elections as an independent.

Bunny, 37, who is chairperson of the Punjab state cooperative bank, also quit his job.

The move comes just five days after Kanwaljit Singh, a senior minister in the Parkash Singh Badal government, was killed in a car crash near Kharar town, 25 km from here, Sunday. The 66-year-old seasoned Akali leader, who was earlier a captain in the army, represented the Banur assembly seat in Patiala district.

‘I am resigning from the Shiromani Akali Dal and I have decided to contest as an independent candidate from the Patiala Lok Sabha seat,’ a visibly disturbed Bunny told media here Friday.

‘I am determined to win from Patiala. My father enjoyed a good reputation there and he had served this area throughout his life. If I win this seat and am able to work for the development of the area then it would be my biggest tribute to my father,’ said Bunny.

Bunny’s decision at a hurriedly called press conference took the entire political fraternity by surprise.

The move could embarrass the Akali Dal as he did not even wait for the completion of last rites (bhog ceremony) of his father that is slated for Sunday.

Particularly embarrassed would be Chief Minister Badal, a long time confidant and associate of Kanwaljit Singh, and Akali Dal president and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Sukhbir Badal’s elevation, first as the Akali Dal president last year and as deputy chief minister January this year, ignored the seniority of senior Akali Dal leaders like Kanwaljit Singh in the party and the government
