MP’s son assaulted woman in park, court hears

The son of New South Wales Labor MP John Aquilina has appeared in court on a sexual assault charge.

Jeremy Aquilina, 25, is charged with sexual assault and indecency.

He is accused of attacking a 22-year-old woman in a park near his house at St Clair, in Sydney’s west, earlier this month.

His bail has been continued until the matter returns to court in June.

Chiefs’ Lauaki to play despite legal woes

The Chiefs have named Sione Lauaki at number eight to play the Brumbies in Canberra on Friday, a day after the former All Black pleaded guilty to an assault charge at a Hamilton court.

The 28-year-old, who played 17 Tests for New Zealand from 2005-2008, replaces Colin Bourke at the back of the pack as the Chiefs seek to move into play-off contention.

Lauaki’s guilty plea related to an incident at a bar in Hamilton, local media reported. He will next appear in court on May 6.

The Chiefs, who have won three out of their five games and are sixth in the standings, could leap-frog the Brumbies and the New South Wales Waratahs into the top four with a win at Canberra.

“We are aware the Brumbies have been playing well and they enjoyed a good start to their season,” Chiefs coach Ian Foster told the team’s website on Wednesday.

“They also have a good record at Canberra Stadium. However, that makes this game that much more exciting and challenging for us.”

The Chiefs have also brought in Ben Afeaki to start at tighthead prop at the expense of Nathan White, and lock Culum Retallick returns to the second row.

Assault charge for alleged fake doctor

Police have told the Alice Springs Magistrates Court a new example of deception has come to light since they arrested a man working unqualified as a doctor.

Balaji Varatharaju, 29, is facing 12 charges mostly relating to his employment at the Alice Springs Hospital as an intern.

He is also facing a fresh charge of assaulting a patient.

Detective Senior Sergeant Leith Phillips has told the court Varatharaju defrauded the Territory Government of $1100 in stamp duty by falsifying the value of a South Australian car he was registering in Alice Springs.

The court has also heard copies of a passport belonging to the brother of Balaji Varatharaju, 29, were found at his house.

In opposing his second application for bail, Mr Phillips told the court police considered Varatharaju a flight risk despite the fact South Australian police hold his passport.

The court heard Varatharaju’s student visa ran out last Monday and a bridging visa is due to expire next month.

Detective Senior Sergeant Phillips told the court colour photocopies of a passport belonging to Varatharaju’s brother, who he said was of a similar age and appearance, were found in the hospital accommodation where Varatharaju had been staying.

An investigation into suspicious bruises on the little boy’s head and body “drifted” and the six-month limit for bringing a common assault charge passed, the unpublished serious case review into the tragedy found.

The report said the child might have been “more effectively safeguarded” if his mother had been charged, according to BBC London.

Baby P, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was 17 months old when he died at the hands of his mother, her boyfriend and their lodger in August 2007.

He had suffered more than 50 injuries despite receiving 60 visits from social workers, doctors and police over an eight-month period.

The little boy came to the attention of the authorities in December 2006 when he was taken to Whittington Hospital in north London with bruises on his head, nose, chest and right shoulder.

Detectives arrested his mother, Baby P was placed on the child protection register, and a file was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

The prosecutors requested further evidence, including medical reports, and a specialist was identified to carry out a review of the child’s injuries.

But in March 2007 the detective in charge moved to a different part of the Metropolitan Police without formally handing the case to another officer and the investigation “drifted”. The specialist had no further contact from police until July 2007 despite emailing to ask what was happening with the case, the report said.

Scotland Yard said it could not comment on the report.

Chris Brown in ‘intense’ plea negotiations over Rihanna beating

New York, Apr 6 (ANI): Chris Brown is in “intense” negotiations on a plea deal over his alleged beating of girlfriend Rihanna, according to a source.

The R ‘n’ B star has to appear in court on April 6, where he will either plead not guilty to two felony counts that arose from the violent incident, or ask to have the arraignment postponed again, said the source.

“It’s expected to be resolved at some point soon. Rihanna wants it resolved as well,” the New York Daily News quoted the source as saying.

The source also claimed that the 19-year-old singer wants to avoid any jail time.

Brown doesn’t want to plead guilty to the felony criminal threats charge because it would be a “strike” on his record under California’s Three Strikes law.

Thus, negotiations on the felony assault charge will be done between defence lawyer Mark Geragos and prosecutors.

“The arraignment is coming up on Monday, that’s all I can tell you,” said district attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons.

Brown was charged with allegedly punching, choking, and biting Rihanna before the Grammy Awards on Feb. 8.

He’s also accused of threatening to kill her. (ANI)

The Liverpool FC captain formally pleaded not guilty to affray when he appeared at Liverpool Crown Court.

Gerrard, 28, was accused of being part of a group that injured businessman Marcus McGee, 34, at the Lounge Inn, Southport, in the early hours of December 29 last year.

The married father-of-two was originally charged with affray and assault.

But last month when he appeared before magistrates in the seaside town, the assault charge was dropped.

Assault charge against Liverpool’s Gerrard dropped

London, Mar.21 (ANI): Liverpool football star Steven Gerrard has expressed relief after an assault charge against him was dropped on Friday.

The Liverpool midfielder, who faced the possibility of going to jail for five years for allegedly causing bodily harm to businessman Marcus McGee, 34, in a wine bar last December, hugged his lawyer after the charges were dropped.

On Friday, according to the Daily Star, prosecutors told magistrates they had decided to drop the assault charges due to lack of evidence.

Gerrard, 28, however, still faces a charge of affray following the alleged bust-up while he was celebrating a Liverpool victory with pals at the Lounge Inn bar in Southport, Merseyside. (ANI)

Amy Winehouse pleads ‘not guilty’ to assault charge

Washington, Mar 18 (ANI): Brit soul singer Amy Winehouse, 25, pleaded “not guilty” to a charge of assault during a London courtroom hearing.

The singer, who stated her name as Amy Jade Civil, had very little to say during the 15-minute hearing in the City of Westminster Magistrates Court on March 17, reports People magazine.

The Rehab singer was seated behind a plastic shield as she pleaded not guilty to assaulting Sherene Flash in September 2008 in Berkeley Square, London, at a high society ball.

The singer kept fidgeting throughout the proceedings, as her father Mitch and a minder watched from the side.

District judge and chief magistrate Timothy Workman set a trial date for July 23, and Winehouse was remanded on bail. (ANI)
