UPSC interviews to also be in vernacular languages

MUMBAI: The Union Public Service Commission has informed the Bombay high court that candidates, who opt for an Indian language medium for the written civil services exam, can henceforth either choose the same Indian language, English or Hindi for the interview.

Even those candidates, who give the main exam in English, can now choose English, Hindi or any othe

r Indian language for the interview, opted by them for the compulsory Indian language paper in the written part of the test, UPSC said in an affidavit.

It was submitted in response to a PIL filed by an IAS aspirant, challenging the existing rule that requires a candidate to give the interview in English if he had appeared for the examination in that language.

Violence rocks Telangana

Hyderabad, May 28 — Congress MP Jaganmohan Reddy was arrested on Friday afternoon after his much-hyped Odarapu yatra (consoling tour) led to violence in Telangana districts including Andhra capital, Hyderabad, in which one person was reportedly killed and twelve injured. Jagan, who is the only son of former chief minister, the late Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, and an aspirant for the CM’s post, was taken into custody by a large team of policemen from the coach of the Intercity Express train at Vangapalli station in Nalgonda district and brought back to Hyderabad. Later, he was released on bail. The MP who defied the party high command directive and went ahead with the trip seems to have antagonised not only politicians of all hues in Telangana but even a large section within the Congress party. Some party MLAs including former minister R. Damodar Reddy have demanded that Jagan be expelled from the party. “He clearly violated the party discipline and it appears he has decided to fight with the high command,” Damodar said. “His stubborn attitude has led to the death of one Telangana activist and large-scale violence in Warangal.” Earlier in the day, the railway station at Mahbubabad, 200 km from Hyderabad in Hyderabad-Vijayawada trunk route, where Jagan was to arrive to a planned grand welcome, witnessed battles involving Telangana activists and his supporters. Shouting slogans of “Jaya Telangana” and “Jagan go back”, they pelted stones at the followers of Jagan, who retaliated in a similar manner. Two local MLAs, Konda Surekha and M. Kavitha, who were present to receive Jagan were not spared. The guards of the two legislators escorted them out while firing at the crowd, reportedly killing a student, Praful Raju (20).

However, Moily refused to comment on the issue, only saying it will be handled as a law and order problem by the state government.

Mumbai, Sep 12 (ANI): Congress party has begun shortlisting candidates aspiring for party’s nomination for the October 13 assembly elections in Maharashtra.

Congress party, which is running a coalition government with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Maharashtra for the second term in a row, is yet to sort out hiccups on seat sharing with its ally.

As the days for nominations to open on September 18 draws close, state Congress party leaders went in a huddle in Mumbai to screen aspirants seeking ‘ticket’ to contest polls on the party symbol.

“I have given my profile, I have told about major problems in our area including drinking water and irrigation and people do not get benefited from the policies of the government,” said Anil Chandra Kumar Gupta, an aspirant from Tiroda seat of Gondia district.

Congress party, which also heads the central coalition, is on a high after its good performance in the April-May general elections. (ANI)

Elizabeth Edwards says she wouldn’t leave husband if she found out he did father his mistress’s child

Washington, May 21 (ANI): Elizabeth Edwards, the terminally ill wife of former Democratic presidential aspirant John Edwards, has said that if she knew that her husband had fathered his mistress’s child, she would not leave him.

Participating in ABC’s “The View,” program as part of her book tour, Elizabeth said she does “not entirely” trust her husband.

Asked if she really didn’t care to know, as she has claimed, whether her husband sired Rielle Hunter’s 14-month daughter – though no one broke the interview rules and dared uttered Rielle’s name – Edwards initially replied that she would be “perfectly happy” if the “whole issue would go away.”

Then she added, “Somebody’s obviously the father of this child. And if that person has other children then the other children need to be prepared. If that’s my husband, then it is. Or if it’s somebody else, then they need to make certain the other children are prepared for this change in their lives.”

She didn’t mention her own children – Cate, Emma Claire and Jack.

Pressed harder at one point, Elizabeth Edwards, who is battling inoperable cancer, conceded, “I don’t know whose child this is, but my relationship with my husband is not changed by this.” (ANI)

Advani has raised black money issue to alert his people’

Bhopal, April 20 (IANS) Congress leader and former union minister Anil Shastri Monday claimed that by raising the issue of black money stacked in foreign banks, Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) prime ministerial aspirant L.K. Advani has alerted his own people so that they can shift their money from these banks.

Talking to reporters here, Shastri said: ‘Since Advani knows well that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was not coming to power after these elections, he has cautioned his people to withdraw money from Swiss banks by the time the next United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government assumed power at the centre.’

Alleging that the state administration under the control of the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh was harassing the Congress candidates in several constituencies, Shastri said that his party will put the issue before the Election Commission.

Shastri also claimed that the Congress would get more than 200 seats on its own in the Lok Sabha polls and Manmohan Singh would once again become the prime minister.

Shastri said that the party was not banking on the achievements of the Congress-led UPA government alone. He said the clean image of Manmohan Singh besides the signing of the landmark nuclear deal with the US would also pay dividends in the general elections.

Refuting the charge of Advani that Manmohan Singh was a ‘weak prime minister’, Shastri said: ‘Dr Singh is one of the strongest prime ministers the country has ever had and he had proven himself as a strong prime minister by signing the nuclear deal with the US despite all odds.’

The Congress leader said that the UPA government had provided 27 percent reservation to the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and his party would also implement reservation in the private sector besides getting the the Women’s Reservation Bill through after resuming power at the centre.

Shastri also attributed Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad’s comments on the alleged involvement of the Congress in demolishing the disputed structure at Ayodhya to his (Lalu Prasad’s) party losing base in Bihar.

‘Lalu did not comment on it for the last five years and now he has raised the issue only to extract political mileage,’ Shastri said.

Opposition parties allege Indonesian elections rigged

Jakarta – Political parties led by the opposition Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle said Tuesday that last week’s elections were rigged, calling the vote the “worst” since the fall of autocratic president Suharto in 1998. The Democratic Party of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was leading in early vote counting after Thursday’s parliamentary elections, and pollsters said the party would win about 20 per cent of the total votes.

Former presidents Megawati Sukarnoputri and Abdurrahman Wahid as well leaders of smaller political parties met at Megawati’s house on Tuesday to forge a common stance on alleged election irregularities.

“The election was far from being fair, dignified, just and democratic,” a spokesman for the group, former armed forces chief and presidential aspirant Wiranto, told a news conference.

Wiranto said millions of Indonesians were prevented from voting because their names were not registered in the voting lists.

“There have been systematic cheating and administrative errors. The government and the election commission were not neutral,” he said, urging authorities to investigate the allegations.

The Elections Supervisory Body said Monday that more than 750 official reports of complaints about irregularities were recorded in the country’s third elections since Suharto’s fall, raising questions about the legitimacy of the vote in some areas.

The meeting at Megawati’s house came as parties were posturing for alliances ahead of the July presidential election.

Parties, or coalitions of parties, that win at least 20 per cent of seats in the 560-member House of Representatives, or 25 per cent of the popular vote, may nominate candidates for the July presidential election.

Yudhoyono is a favourite to win in July with his popularity rating above 60 per cent, while Megawati comes a distant second.

Yudhoyono is expected to ally with the Muslim-oriented Justice and Prosperity Party, now in fourth position in vote counting at 8 per cent, and other smaller groupings.

Megawati’s Democratic Party of Struggle was tied with Vice President Jusuf Kalla’s Golkar Party at around 14 per cent in early vote results.

An official final result of the vote count is not due until May 9.

Megawati met with Wiranto and Prabowo Subianto, another former general who led the army special forces under Suharto, last week to discuss a coalition.

A Megawati pact with Wiranto and Prabowo is expected to draw criticism from human rights activists, who accuse both men of rights violations when they served in the military. (dpa)

Mumbai, Apr. 13 (ANI): Tech Mahindra has bought a 31 percent stake in the fraud-hit Satyam Computers on Monday.

Tech Mahindra outbid Larsen and Toubro and other companies.

Tech Mahindra made a bid of 58 rupees per share for Satyam, and is expected to pay 1757crore rupees for a 31 percent stake in Satyam.

The government-appointed Satyam Board conducted the final bidding in Mumbai this morning.

“We have entered the final stage of the bidding process, and on Monday we will conduct the financial bidding in Mumbai to find the highest bidder for a 31 percent stake in Satyam Computer,” Satyam Board Chairman Kiran Karnik had said.

The interested bidders submitted their bids by 9 a.m. on Monday, after which a technical evaluation was held.

Larsen and Toubro was considered to be the front-runner in the race.

Tech Mahindra was seen as the second biggest aspirant.

Before the bidding begun, Tech Mahindra sources had said that there was no board meeting on Sunday to discuss participation and the bid price.

“In such a big step, the company doesn’t wait till the eleventh hour to take a call. Whatever has to be decided, has already been decided,” he said.

The Pune based company is a joint venture between Mahindra and Mahindra Limited (M and M) and British Telecommunications.

Tech Mahindra is sixth largest software exporter and second largest Telecom Software Provider in India.

Satyam has been struggling for survival since founder and Chairman Ramalinga Raju shocked investors in January, saying Satyam’s profits had been overstated for years and assets falsified in what has become India’s biggest corporate scandal.

Satyam’s government-appointed board was keen to bring in an investor to restore confidence among its roughly 50,000-strong staff and more than 600 customers, which include General Electric and Qantas Airways (ANI)

Jolt to Chiranjeevi as another leader quits

Hyderabad, April 9 (IANS) With just a week left for the elections in Andhra Pradesh, Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) Thursday suffered another major jolt with a key leader resigning and levelling allegations of corruption against the party.

Prakala Prabhakar, party spokesman and an intellectual face in the party, quit amid high drama. He handed over his resignation to the staff at the PRP office here and then launched a bitter attack on the leadership without naming anyone.

Alleging that the PRP was spreading poison, he termed the party a ‘company’ and said the allegations made by several others were true to a large extent.

‘There are certain undesirable elements in the party. They have cheated people. I don’t know why they did this,’ said Prabhakar, speaking from the party office.

The party hit back at Prabhakar.

Addressing a news conference here in the night, Chiranjeevi’s brother-in-law and PRP general secretary Allu Aravind alleged that Prabhakar made baseless allegations as he was an aspirant for the party ticket for the Narsapuram Lok Sabha seat but had no ‘roots among people’.

‘How dare he use the PRP office after his resignation and make such allegations against the party. He has no morals,’ said an emotional Aravind while denying allegations that the party sold tickets for this month’s assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

‘It was Prabhakar who spread poison in the guise of sweet talk,’ said Aravind while reacting to his branding PRP as a ‘poisonous tree’.

Aravind, an eminent film producer, threw a challenge at his critics to prove the allegation that he sold tickets. ‘We have given tickets to 104 candidates from backward classes. How many of them have the capacity to pay,’ said Aravind, who is contesting for the Lok Sabha from Ankapalli constituency.

Prabhakar’s exit is the second jolt to the party after last week’s resignation of C. Anjaneya Reddy, a former police officer, who was the party’s vice president.

Dozens of leaders have quit the PRP in the last two weeks to protest the manner in which nominations were given for the assembly and Lok Sabha polls.

Prabhakar, who was earlier with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and worked as an anchor for a TV channel, made a dramatic appearance at the PRP office with his supporters.

He handed over the one-line resignation and addressed a press conference from the same podium he had used as spokesman for media briefings.

‘I am a partner in their sin of raising hopes among people that the PRP will bring change. To wash off this sin, I am walking out,’ he said.

Advani files nomination, raises black money issue

Gandhinagar, April 8 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial aspirant L.K. Advani Wednesday filed his nomination for the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha seat and promised that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), if voted to power, would strive to bring back black money stashed in tax havens abroad.

‘The NDA will contest the Lok Sabha polls on the three planks of good governance, development and secularism, mentioned in the BJP poll manifesto,’ he told reporters after filing his nomination papers at the Gandhinagar district collector’s office.

He was accompanied by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and state BJP president Purshottam Rupala.

Advani, former deputy prime minister, has been contesting successfully from this constituency, which also includes parts of Ahmedabad, since 1991. However, he chose not to contest in the 1996 elections.

This time, his main rivals are Suresh Patel, a sitting legislator, of the Congress and noted artist-activist Mallika Sarabhai who is contesting as an independent.

Advani told reporters the government needs to know if there is any Indian whose money is deposited in Swiss banks.

‘I wrote to the prime minister (Manmohan Singh) on the black money issue and he has replied in the affirmative,’ Advani said.

‘Why should our (India’s) money be lying in banks abroad? If we pursue the matter, which the NDA would do it anyway when voted to power, India would have all the financial resources to complete its various developmental projects,’ he said.

‘Whatever funds are required for the development of the country would be arranged. There were doubts raised by the Congress that the projects such as the Golden Quadrilateral (highway project) and East-West Corridor would need a lot of funding which the NDA provided for during its rule at the centre,’ he said.

‘If we could bring back all the money of Indians stashed abroad, there would be no dearth of funding for any project. The government of Germany had recently asked for a list of German individuals whose money was stashed away in a Swiss bank. The government of Switzerland had revealed names of about 300 German nationals whose money was lying in Swiss banks,’ he said.

The US administration has also approached Switzerland with a request to reveal the names of US businessmen who have their money stashed away in Swiss banks, he added.

Advani had started raising this demand in the run-up to the Group of 20 (G20) summit in London, also attended by Manmohan Singh, where the issue was discussed.

He said the NDA is committed on the issue of good governance and the BJP had also promised in its manifesto.

Praising Modi, he said: ‘Other states in the country could follow the good governance practices of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.’

ELECTION EYE – Mayawati promises job “quotas” for all poor

The following is a snapshot of recent developments in India’s general election campaign. (The sources are mentioned in brackets)

* Mayawati, chief of the caste-based Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and a prime ministerial aspirant, has promised to have job quotas for all poor sections of society cutting across caste and religious lines (The Times of India).

She told an election rally that jobs, including in the judiciary, would be reserved for even poor upper castes, Muslims and Christians. Under present laws, affirmative government action such as reserved jobs and college seats is aimed only at lower caste Hindus, tribes and other backward classes.

* The Samajwadi Party, which is strong in Uttar Pradesh, has begun talks with a new political outfit in Andhra Pradesh floated by a popular film star (all newspapers). Media reports said the Samajwadi Party was trying to stitch together a loose alliance which could leverage a post-election deal with any formation that emerges as the front-runner to form a government.

* Sonia Gandhi, the chief of the ruling Congress party and one of the most powerful politicians in India, does not own a car or a house (all newspapers). She declared assets worth only $274,000 while filing her nomination papers to contest the Rae Bareli seat. She lives in a sprawling government bungalow in the heart of New Delhi.

Candidate change upsets Kodela

GUNTUR: Stung by the change of candidate for Macherla at the eleventh hour, senior Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Kodela Sivaprasada Rao is
believed to have threatened to retire from the contest. According to sources, Kodela was upset when TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu dropped V Chalama Reddy, promoted by Kodela and named Julakanti Brahma Reddy, hours before the closure of deadline for filing of papers on Saturday.

“Why should I contest the election when none of my suggestions are taken into consideration,” Kodela reportedly told his close aides in Narasaraopet. He reportedly expressed his displeasure at Lok Sabha candidate Modugula Venugopala Reddy for going against his wishes.

When Chalama Reddy’s name had been announced by Naidu last week, five top district TDP functionaries including aspirant Brahma Reddy submitted their resignations while their followers set on fire the district party office. With matters going out of control, Naidu discussed the issue with district party chief Pullarao and Venugopal Reddy after which he announced the replacement at the last hour.

In fact, Brahma Reddy was the losing TDP candidate from this constituency in the last elections. In spite of the fact that Brahma Reddy had a strong following, Kodela wanted him to be replaced.

Kodela is said to be unhappy with Naidu for not endorsing his candidates for various seats. Naidu nominated Y Srinivasa Rao from Gurazala, Alapati Rajendra Prasad from Tenali and Chukkapalli Ramesh from Guntur-west against Kodela’s wishes, party sources said. The faction leader had also wanted Srinivasa Rao to be replaced with a BC candidate and fielded from Guntur West but his proposal was rejected by the TDP chief.

Kodela did not wish to speak to the media on Saturday. In the meantime, both Brahma Reddy and Chalama Reddy on Saturday filed their nominations. With Brahma Reddy filing the B-form with a special mention to cancel the previous B-form issued in favour of Chalama Reddy. It was obvious that who was the official TDP nominee. Nominations for the second phase of elections ended on Saturday and indications are that Chalama Reddy would withdraw from the fray before the deadline.

Mallika Sarabhai to contest against Advani from Gandhinagar

Ahmedabad, Mar 20 (ANI): Renowned dancer and social activist Mallika Sarabhai has said that she would contest in the general elections as an independent candidate from Gandhinagar.

This is the constituency from where Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ‘s L K Advani was elected in the previous elections and is again contesting this time, also as the party’s prime ministerial candidate.

Sarabhai, who had posed stern opposition to the Hindu rightist factions in Gujarat, said that for the past several years she had been prompted by a host of her well-wishers to enter the political arena and contest in the elections.

“When my friends, admirers, and my social activist friends told me that the time has come to enter politics, so I thought hard. Today, I decided to contest as an independent candidate in Gujarat,” said Sarabhai.

Further, she noted that the place she will represent the ‘secular forces’ and is no way scared to fight against a seasoned politician and tough contender like Advani.

“It is my privilege that from where I am contesting also happens to be the constituency in which the prime ministerial aspirant is also a candidate,” added Sarabhai.

Sarabhai was in the forefront in lashing out at Gujarat’s Chief Minister Narendra Modi by blaming him for inciting the post-Godhra communal violence of 2002 in Gujarat. (ANI)

Girls are better off at single-sex schools

London, Mar 18 (ANI): When it comes to academic performance, girls studying in single sex schools are better off than their co-ed counterparts, according to a study.

The analysis of the GCSE scores of more than 700,000 girls taught in the state sector revealed that those at girls’ schools consistently made more progress than those in co-ed secondaries.

Away from the distraction of boys, and free to excel in science and maths, girls in single-sex schools were more likely thrive than those in co-ed schools.

During the study, conducted on behalf of the Good Schools Guide, the researchers examined the “contextually value added” scores for every girl who took GCSEs in the state sector between 2005 and 2007.

Over the period, the researchers found all the girls studying in girls-only school did better than predicted, while those in mixed-sex schools 20pct did worse than expected.

“A lot of parents will look at the benefits of co-ed schools, like the fact that girls and boys are educated side-by-side preparing them for the world of work and life,” the Guardian quoted Janette Wallis, editor of the Good Schools Guide, as saying.

“But to disregard this evidence would be a mistake. We never expected to see such a difference,” she added.

Wallis said that the effect could be down to girls working better without boys “distracting” them, but acknowledged the fact that educationally aspirant parents could seek out girls-only schools, which could also make a difference.

The study suggests that pupils who are struggling academically when they start secondary school reap greater benefits from girls-only schooling.

“It is very interesting that girls seem to be making more progress at single-sex schools. It does support a body of research evidence that girls do better in single-sex environments,” said Alice Sullivan, a researcher at the Institute of Education, University of London, and a specialist in single-sex schooling.

However, some of the experts said that the research was more conflicting.

“We know across the piece that the main variables relating to exam success are pupil characteristics, social background and quality of teacher,” said Alan Smithers, director of education at Buckingham University.

“There is very little space for gender in the classroom to make a difference. Where it apparently has an effect it relates to other factors, such as the aspirations of the parents who want their daughter educated in a single-sex school. But if this is true it will change our understanding,” he added.

Sue Dunford, headteacher of Southfield School for Girls in Kettering, said: “It’s a question of confidence in the way girls develop. It’s cool to be very good at anything in a girls school – maths, sciences or physics. No one will ask why you’re doing a boys’ subject. Girls who lack confidence can thrive more in girls-only schools. We don’t have boys competing and distracting, so girls can really go for it.” (ANI)

Haj pilgrims make a beeline for passports in Kashmir

Srinagar, Mar 18 (ANI): After this year’s directive of the Saudi Arabia Government allowing only those to undertake the pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina who have valid international passports, scores of pilgrimage aspirants queue outside the Regional Passport Office (RPO) in Srinagar to submit application forms for passports for past few days.

Until now special pilgrimage passes used to be issued for the annual pilgrimage and Haj Committees used to invite applications from Muslim devotees and make the final selection through draw of lots.

But after the Saudi Arabian government’s announcement, the pilgrims will be able to use their passports for Haj pilgrimage and other trips abroad.

“Earlier it was pilgrim pass. It was valid only for Saudi Arabia for a period of three months. Now what they require is a regular international passport. Once you obtain this passport you can go on Haj pilgrimage also and you can use this passport for other purposes also. There will be no difference at all between Haj pilgrimage pass and regular international passport,” said B. S Manavalan, Passport Officer, Kashmir.

People from far flung and remote areas are visiting the office with their applications to get their passports made and are quite happy that the cost of the special Haj pass and the international passport is the same at rupees 1,000.

“They charge 1,000 rupees which has to be deposited later. Here they are verifying the nationality of the applicants whether they belong to Kashmir or not,” said Mohammad Subhan, a Haj pilgrimage aspirant.

The registrations for the passports are on till March 31 and a lottery would decide the names of the people who would be eligible for the passports.

The Holy Quran directs the faithful to undertake Haj at least once in a lifetime.

The Haj involves weeklong celebrations and takes place nearly seventy days after the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Over two million pilgrims undertake Haj each year from all over the world. By Pervez Butt (ANI)

Prime ministerial candidate to be chosen by consensus: Naidu

New Delhi, Mar 18 (ANI): Telugu Desam Party leader Chandrababu Naidu said on Wednesday that the decision on the Third Party’s prime ministerial candidate would be taken by consensus.

Talking to the reporters here, Naidu said, “There is only one seat for prime minister’s post. Many people have aspirations. Ultimately, we have to bring some consensus. I am confident people will realise this. Ultimately they will adjust on consensus candidate that will emerge.”

However, Naidu refused to comment on Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati’s probability to be a consensus candidate. “I cannot comment on these things at this juncture. Reason is very clear – all of us have to sit in a coalition politics then decide the candidate,” he said.

Naidu, further clarified that he was not interested for the prime ministerial post.

“Never have I aspired, even in future. I am not a candidate. Twice I got an offer, I made very clear I am not an aspirant,” he said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati had reportedly revealed her ambition to hold the top post soon after the Third Front was formed.

However, on March 15, she announced that her party would not form alliance with any party and would contest the coming general elections alone.

Mayawati, who had invited the Third Front for a dinner meeting on the same day, dismissed reports of having given any ultimatum of 48 hours to the Third Front to declare her as their prime ministerial candidate. (ANI)

Malaysian Indian Congress president Vellu set to retain post

Kuala Lumpur, Mar 16 (ANI): Incumbent Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) president S. Samy Vellu is all set to retain the party’s top post for a record 11th consecutive term, as his only challenger, former MIC vice-president M.

Muthupalaniappan is not expected to get the minimum 50 nominations required from the party’s branches.

Under the party constitution, a presidential aspirant needs 300 nominations, with each nomination needing a proposer and five seconders, to be eligible to contest. All proposers and seconders must be branch chairmen.

The MIC president will be picked by the 22 committee members of each of the 3,700 branches nationwide. The party has fixed March 22 for the nominations and polling on April 12.

If Muthupalaniappan fails to get 50 nominations, Vellu will be named president on March 22 — the same date when he officially became the party supremo, 28 years ago in 1981.

In January, Muthupalaniappan was expelled by the disciplinary committee for acting against the interests of the party but was reinstated following an appeal to the party’s Central Working Committee (CWC), the highest decision-making body.

According to the New Strait Times, Muthupalaniappan had claimed that there were concerted efforts by some party leaders to ensure he did not get enough nominations to contest.

“I am facing an uphill task. Even obtaining nomination forms is a huge task, what more asking branch leaders to sign it,” he said.

Political observers said “politics of patronage” was the reason why Samy Vellu’s grip on power had remained unchallenged for decades.

A CWC member said the thousands of branches, which held their annual general meetings last month, had unanimously supported Samy Vellu for the president’s post.

With Samy Vellu expected to retain the top post, the fight would focus on the deputy president’s post. (ANI)

All Third Front leaders aspirant to occupy PM seat: Paswan

New Delhi, Mar 15 (ANI): Union Steel Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) Chief Ram Vilas Paswan on Sunday said that all the leaders in the Third Front were aspirants to occupy the chair of Prime Minister.

“An atmosphere is being created in the Third Front in the name of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Chief and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati. If you look at the Third Front, all are candidates; nobody is a follower, all of them are leaders. No one is the Prime Ministerial candidate in the Front,” Paswan said while addressing a press conference here.

Meanwhile, in Bangalore, the Janata Dal- Secular (JD-S) leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy asserted that the outfit would not have any problem if Mayawati was selected as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the Front.

“Our national President has already expressed several times that if Mayawati is accepted as the prime ministerial candidate from other parties of the Front, our party will not have any problem to support her as a Prime Minister,” Kumaraswamy observed.

India will hold the general election between April 16 and May 13, in which 714 million people will be casting their votes.

On March 2, former Prime Minister and Janata Dal- Secular (JD-S) Chief H. D. Deve Gowda had announced the formation of a Third Front, an alliance of eight parties, including the Left.
