Muslim leaders in favour of caste count

New Delhi, May 26 — A caste-based census could have a knock-on effect on demands of Muslims – from blanket reservation to their inclusion in the list of scheduled castes. Unable to reach a consensus, the government on Wednesday decided to set up a group of ministers to take a view on whether there should be a caste-based census. Most Muslim leaders in India are fighting for some form of quota for the community of 150 million, many of whom face varying degrees of disadvantages. That is why they also support a census based on caste. “The population of Muslims among other backward classes and Dalits is now enumerated on mere assumptions. A caste-based census will throw up absolute numbers for the first time,” said Ejaz Ali, a Rajya Sabha MP fighting for the inclusion of so-called Dalit Muslims in the list of scheduled castes. Although no caste system formally exists in Islam, three groups of Indian Muslims – ashraf, ajlaf and arzal – essentially function as such, each denoting a professional class. The ashrafs, said to be of Arab ancestry, are the so-called upper-class among Muslims, while the ajlafs tend to be considered as Hindus who converted to Islam to escape the caste system. The arzals compare with the lowest caste among Hindus. In March, former MP and diplomat Syed Shahabuddin, an ardent advocate of Muslim reservation, wrote to Law Minister Veerapa Moily, asking “instructions to the Registrar General of India /Census Commissioner to collect data on not only population of major religious groups but all social groups or sub-group”. “We need not call it caste census but Development Oriented Census of all Social Groups,” he said. Rajya Sabha MP Ali Anwar, who heads the All-India Pasmmada Muslim Mahaj, or the community of backward Muslims, wants more Muslim groups counted as OBCs and scheduled castes. His organisation wants Rajasthan’s Mew community – the Muslim counterpart of the Hindu Meena tribe – to be counted as a schedule tribe.

More demands will further strain India’s full-up quota system for disadvantaged groups, who will resist any move to reduce their share.

Musharraf denies misuse of US aid, says Indian media highlighting ‘non-issue’

Lahore, Sep.16 (ANI): Days after former Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf’s statement that Islamabad had diverted US aid to strengthen its defence against India was splashed in the media all over, the former general has denied allegations of misuse of army equipment, saying the media has highlighted a ‘non-issue’.

Dr Nasim Ashraf, one of Musharraf’s close friends, told a private television channel that the former President has categorically denied misuse of any US military aid during his regime.

Ashraf said it was wrong to say that the Pakistan Army had violated the agreement regarding the equipments supplied by the US.

“If a unit stationed in Waziristan moved to Kashmir, the equipment would move with it, which was not a violation of the agreement,” The Daily Times quoted Ashraf, as saying.

Responding to a question he said Musharraf would return to Pakistan as soon as his lecture tour is finished.

It is worth mentioning here that in an interview to a Pakistani news channel earlier this week, Musharraf had admitted that he had violated the rules governing the use of the military aid, but justified his action, saying he had “acted in the best interest of Pakistan.” (ANI)

PCB discontinues inquiry against Shoaib Akhtar after apology

Lahore, Sep.9 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has discontinued its enquiry against controversial fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar for criticizing the team management on a television chat show.

PCB chairman Ijaz Butt told media persons here, that since Akhtar has admitted his mistake and apologized for the same, board has also decided to drop the inquiry.

It was nice of him to accept his mistake and we don’t want this issue to linger on any longer. So we have closed this chapter,” The Daily Times quoted Butt, as saying.

The PCB had served a show cause notice to Akhtar for breaking the board’s code of conduct. He has been accused of violating three clauses of the central contract by giving a television interview in which he claimed that the national team management conspired against him and that he considered suing the authorities for leaking a confidential medical report.

Akhtar, during the television show, had described the former PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf, as a ‘second grade person’, and said that all previous administrators had done nothing but ruined the game in the country.

Meanwhile, Akhtar said he is working hard on his form and fitness and would soon start competing in domestic matches to prove his fitness.

Akhtar, 34, has been struggling with his form and fitness for a long time which has seen him lose his place from both Test and one-day squad. (ANI)

Gilani’s silence suggests his involvement in massive corruption : PML-Q

Islamabad, Sep.8 (ANI): The Pakistan Muslim League Quaid (PML-Q) has condemned Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani for refusing to take notice of involvement of his cabinet ministers in large scale corruption.

Senior PML-Q leader Makhdoom Faisal Saleh Hayat said Gilani’s reluctance to take action on such charges against his ministers indicates that he too is a artner in crime, The Daily Times reports.

“The PM’s silence regarding the corruption of his ministers despite repeated pointation by the opposition proves he is also involved in various shady deals,” a press statement released by Hayat said.

Referring to the reports regarding the purchase of a house by Water and Power Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf in London for a whopping 4.4 million pounds, Hayat claimed that Ashraf had misappropriated funds from rental power project deals to earn huge money.

Hayat appealed to the Supreme Court to take suo motu notice of this ‘blatant corruption’ and direct the government to stop the rental power projects. (ANI)

PCB sacks chief operating officer Salim Altaf

Lahore, Sep 1 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has sacked its chief operating officer Salim Altaf.

PCB chairman Ijaz Butt was no longer interested in keeping Altaf in the board due to his poor management skills, erratic behaviour and intrigues, sources said.

“The termination letter has been sent by PCB director human resource Wasim Bari to Salim,” sources said.

Salim was appointed the chief operating officer when Ijaz took reins of the PCB after Nasim Ashraf resigned following resignation of former President Pervez Musharraf.

Shafqat Naghmi was shown the door and Salim was named in his place. The ouster of Salim is the third high profile dismissal in the PCB after sacking of chief selector Abdul Qadir and assistant coach Aaqib Javed from their respective posts.

“Seven out of nine PCB governing board members have signed the removal summary of Salim. The summary states that Salim’s services are no longer required by the board,” the Daily Times quoted sources, as saying.

The ‘sharp differences’ between Salim and Ijaz had reached their peak for the last couple of months. Ijaz had taken all powers of the chief operating officer in his hands and Salim, like a dummy official, was drawing only salary from the board.

“The decision to fire Salim was in the offing as Ijaz had enough of him. The two were not even talking to each other for quite some time. Relations between Ijaz and Salim started getting sour when the latter confronted the chairman twice on taking unilateral decisions and not taking other officials into confidence.”

Salim told reporters yesterday he had not received any termination letter from the board as yet. “I reserve the right to pursue legal action against the board for this unfair dismissal of my services,” Salim maintained. (ANI)

Pak Cabinet’s ECC clears plan for 1,500 MW rental power plants

Islamabad, Aug.22 (ANI): The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Pakistan Cabinet has given its approval to a plan for 1500 megawatt rental power plants, and has also asked the federal power ministry to arrange 2,200 megawatts of electricity from 14 companies in order to end the country’s power crisis.

Pakistan’s Water and Power Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf told journalists after the meeting that currently the country requires 2,700 megawatts of electricity through rental power plants.

He said that he had also directed the power ministry to seek 200 mmcfd of gas from the petroleum ministry to generate 700MW from the existing system.

He said that if the petroleum ministry failed to provide the required gas more electricity would be generated through the rental power plants.

In reply to a question about the financial impact of these rental plants, Ashraf said that when the plants came online the overall tariff would rise by six per cent.

He also said the government was working on hydel-power plants and projects like the Bhasha Dam and the Neelum-Jhelum power plants, and added that work on the Bunji dam project would start soon. (ANI)

More trouble for Akhtar as PCB seeks legal advice on his statements

Lahore, July 13 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to seek legal advice on the recent statement of controversial fast bowler Shoiab Akhtar, in which he had blamed the board for maligning his image.

According to sources, PCB chief Ijaz Butt has asked board lawyers to study Akhtar’s statement, and find out whether his statements demand any legal action or not.

“The recent statements are being studied by the legal advisors who will advise the chairman on whether Akhtar has violated his contract terms, as under a central contract obviously a player is not supposed to make controversial statements,” The Daily Times quoted a PCB official, as saying.

The PCB has already made it clear that it would take disciplinary action against Akhtar for his remarks on the board’s decision to axe him from the World Twenty20 Championship team.

A final decision in this regard would be taken Butt.

Akhtar, during a television chat show, had described the former PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf, as a ‘second grade person’, and said that all previous administrators had done nothing but ruined the game in the country.

Akhtar said he still has many years of cricket left in him and claimed that there has been a conspiracy to malign his image.

He said that he thought of suing the board for denying him a place in the World T20 Championship squad, but decided against it on Butt’s advice.

The 34 year old speedster was axed from the World T20 Championship squad after a PCB medical panel declared him unfit due to a skin infection.

Following Akhtar’s ouster from the team, chief selector Abdul Qadir also resigned from the post alleging that coach Intikhab Alam and team manager Yawar Saeed were behind the move to drop Akhtar. (ANI)

Shoaib’s anti-PCB rant may be final nail in his coffin

Lahore, July 11 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) may take disciplinary action against controversial fast Shoaib Akhtar for his remarks on the board’s decision to axe him from the World Twenty20 Championship team.

The final decision in this regard would be taken by the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt, The Daily Times reports.

When enquired about the issue, Butt said he is not fully aware about what Akhtar had actually said during the television interview.

Butt said he would be going through the whole statement of Akhtar, and would then decide whether the statements tantamount to violation of the player’s central contract.

According to sources, Butt would seek views of other senior board officials before penalizing Akhtar.

Akhtar, during the television chat show, had described the former PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf, as a ‘second grade person’, and said that all the previous administrators had done nothing but ruined the game in the country.

Akhtar said he still has many years of cricket left in him and claimed that there has been a conspiracy to malign his image.

Pak Taliban eyes new allies in wake of renewed US offensive

Islamabad, July 10 (ANI): Increased pressure from the US and the Pakistani Army on the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and al Qaeda may force them to join hands with the militant Sunni radical group Jundallah, a group that staged attacks on Iran and strained Iranian-Pakistani relations.

Ashraf Ali, a Peshawar-based military specialist on the Taliban, said that given Jundallah’s historical connections with al Qaeda and the Taliban, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan might seek refuge in Balochistan or join the ranks of Jundallah.

“This would give a totally new dimension to the dynamics of Taliban/al Qaeda militancy in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region and may shift some of the problem to the Pakistan-Iran border region,” The Washington Times quoted Ali, as saying.

“This is very much possible, as apparently there seems to be no Pakistani troops deployment on the south of the conflict zone towards Balochistan,” he added.

Last week, a suicide bomber detonated his explosives at a hotel in Balochistan’s Kalat district, killing four people and injuring 11. The attack appeared aimed at disrupting supplies to NATO forces in Afghanistan, since drivers of NATO supply vehicles were eating at the hotel, the Daily Times reported.

Analysts say the incident was a sign of rising Taliban/al Qaeda activities in Balochistan, as well as a possible indication of growing contacts between Waziristan-based militant groups and Jundallah.

Malik Siraj Akbar, a journalist in Quetta, said that Jundullah leader Abdul Malik Rigi studied at madrassas in Karachi where Taliban leaders also got their schooling.

The possibility of a new alliance among the Taliban, Al Qaeda and Jundallah could provide common ground among the United States, Pakistan and Iran against the terror threat. (ANI)

PCB opposes sending invitation to Musharraf, Aziz for ICC T20 final

London, June 21 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has opposed inviting former President General Pervez Musharaf and Prime Minister Sahukat Aziz to the final of the ICC World Twenty20 Championship to be played here today.

According to sources, the former PCB chief Nasim Ashraf has asked the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to invite Musharraf and Aziz for the final match of the tournament to be played between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

However, the ECB rejected Ashraf’s request, as the present PCB chief Ijaz Butt advised against sending invitations to the former leaders.

“The ECB is sending a written note to the Pakistan Cricket Board informing the board that it was purely on the intervention of Ejaz Butt that it has declined to invite Musharraf and Shaukat,” The Dawn quoted P. J. Mir, a television talk show host, as saying.

When enquired about the issue, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Britain, Wajid Shamsul Hasan, denied to comment saying he too has not received any invitation for the final match.

Hasan, however, said that he has been informed that his invitation was on its way.

“It is only today that I learnt that an invitation is on its way,” he said. (ANI)

Pak hockey team failed to achieve its objective in Asia Cup

Lahore, May 25 (ANI): Former Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) director general Zakir Hussain Syed has said that the Pakistani hockey team failed to achieve its objective in the recently concluded Asia Cup where the green shirts lost to South Korea in the final.

“Pakistan’s objective in the Asia Cup 2009 was to win and qualify for the World Cup in India. This target was not achieved. And though reaching the final might be of some consolation, the end result remains the same as before the Asia Cup,” he said.

“We will now have to go through the qualifying round and the uncertainty that invariably accompanies any such process,” the Daily Times quoted Syed, as saying.

The renowned sports administrator and columnist said Pakistan played their best match against India whom they beat 4-2 to avenge the Ipoh defeat.

“But I personally feel that Pakistan had the capacity and strength to beat South Korea but they failed because of a poor strategy.”

He said the Koreans were considered pre-tournament favourites but he still felt that Pakistan should have won to qualify for the World Cup.

Syed said out of the remaining lot only forwards Abdul Haseem Khan, Mohammad Irfan and Zeeshan Ashraf were impressive.

He said the PHF should now concentrate on the future build up of the team and must give due emphasis to grooming physically strong and tall youngsters as physique does play a major role in the ultimate outcome. (ANI)

Muslim organization issues fatwa over mobile-phone etiquettes

According to reports, a panel of clerics of the Kanpur-based Muslim organization, Jamia Ashraf-ul-Madaris, has issued a ‘fatwa’ over etiquettes related to use of mobile phones.

As per the ‘fatwa’ – which is essentially an Islamic legal diktat laid down by staunch practitioners of the Sharia law -, it is a sin to use verses from the Koran as ring tones. In addition, the ruling from the organization said that answering calls in the middle of the aayat – a verse from the holy Koran – is also sinful. The decree argues that people answer calls midway through the aayat, leave the verse incomplete.

Elaborating on the decision, Ghyasuddin, a senior cleric of the organization, said: “Listening to aayats partially is anti-Islamic. This kind of action amounts to a gunah (sin).”

The panel has also restricted the followers of Islam from putting their cell-phones in the ‘vibrate’ mode while offering prayer services, and censuring their use in the bathroom. Briefing the Press Association, Ghyasuddin said: “If the phone rings and an aayat can be heard in the toilet, it is a sin.”

Ghyasuddin added that these kind of anti-Islamic practices leave a bad impression on the young generation.

Mother India fights back

RANI PAL, the mother of slain BSP MLA Raju Pal, has filed her nomination from Pratapgarh as an Independent candidate. She said she was fighting the election to avenge the murder of her son allegedly at the hands of Atiq and his brother Ashraf.

The mother and wife of the slain BSP MLA from city north, who was killed by a gang of assassins on January 25, 2005, had fainted after hearing the news of her death. When the duo regained consciousness, they had vowed to bring Atiq and Ashraf to justice.

Puja, who had married Raju barely nine days before his murder, has taken on Atiq, the MP from Phulpur, in court. But her mother-in-law has other ideas.

“The aim is not only to defeat him, but also to tell the electorate that he (Atiq) is a murderer and not fit for public life,” alleged Rani, who recently gave up her job as a health supervisor so she could contest elections. Shri Kant, a close aid of the slain MLA’s mother, alleged that Raju had been murdered because he had defeated Ashraf in the Assembly elections from the city west constituency.

“The brother-duo against whom there are dozens of criminal cases could not digest the idea of suffering defeat at the hands of an ordinary person like Raju,” Kant said. “I had been impatiently waiting for the day I would be able to contest elections against this man and tell voters what he has done to a mother.

I will continue to contest all future elections against him no matter from which corner of the country he fights,” Rani told Hindustan Times. Rani is ready to go to the extent of filing another nomination from Phulpur in case Atiq’s wife Shaista Parveen plunges into the fray as an Independent from Phulpur, Kant added.
