India’s Ashis Roy completes 104th marathon

Washington, June 6 (IANS) Running his third marathon in 33 days, India’s grand old marathon man Ashis Roy has completed his 104th marathon finishing the Sunburst Marathon in South Bend, Indiana, in pouring rain.

Roy, who turned 78 June 1, finished the 26.2 mile run through South Bend town and along St Joseph River Saturday in 6 hours and 43 minutes – four minutes more than his last run in Bob Potts Heritage Rail Trail Marathon in York, Pennsylvania two weeks ago.

It was pretty hot when the race started at 6 a.m. but he still managed to complete the first half in a comfortable 3 hours and 15 minutes, but around the 19th mile on the return run it started raining heavily slowing him down a bit.

The veteran Indian runner, who completed his 100th marathon in Mumbai Jan 17, has no plans to hang his boots yet. ‘I want to keep running to show to the world that Indians too can do well in sports,’ Roy, the oldest of 840 participants told IANS on phone.

Amazed that he was still running at 78, a few came up to him and said: ‘You are a superman’. ‘It was a grand feeling,’ said Roy.

Another reason that keeps him going is: ‘I want to tell the sports authorities in India that they should not restrict sports to youth only. But it should be open to all.’

Roy, who has penned a book on ‘Joy of Running’ is listed in the Limca Book of Records, and has, to date, competed in 37 marathons in India and 67 marathons in 20 other countries, including the International Veterans Marathon in Athens in 1986.

Roy, a resident of New Delhi, began running marathons at the age of 52 when he retired as a cardiologist with the Indian Air Force.

Traditional ‘Kahika Fair’ celebrated in Himachal Pradesh

Kullu (Himachal Pradesh), May 29 (ANI): Thousands of devotees converged to celebrate the traditional ‘Kahika Fair’ in Shirar village, near Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu town on Friday.

Sounds of hymns in the air marked the beginning of the festival in the village that was adorned with colourful canopies.

An important ritual observed during the festival is a mock sacrificial ceremony of a member of Naur (a tribe) and getting his life back from the gods.

“It is a common belief that during the festival all gods and goddesses come under a tree and an arrow is shot in the air. The arrow is considered so powerful that it takes the life of the Naur and he is declared dead,” said Rajesh Sharma, a local.

“Then the gods and goddesses use their prowess to give life to the dead Naur,” he added.

The natives here believe that the prayers performed during the festival sanctify the village and purify the souls of the people participating in it.

“The rituals performed during the Kahika festival purify the area and shuns evil spirits and that is why the sacrifice of the Naur’s life is performed and he comes back to life,” said Arun Kumar, a local.

Kumar appeared confident that the festival would bring prosperity in the village.

“This year the Naur-Megha-Yajna (a ritual performed in which a person from the Naur tribe is declared dead and is brought back to life by observing ceremonial prayers) was conducted peacefully and it will bring happiness and prosperity among us,” said Arun Kumar. (ANI)

Allahabad High Court stalls Ganga Expressway project

Allahabad, May 30 (ANI): The Allahabad High Court has barred the Uttar Pradesh Government from proceeding ahead on the ambitious eight-laned Ganga Expressway project and directed the concerned authorities to obtain prior clearance from environmental board.

A bench comprising Justice Ashok Bhusan and Justice Arun Tandon on Friday passed this order on the petition filed by two voluntary organisations, which questioned the environmental feasibility of the project.

The Court has stayed further work on over 1000 kilometres long project that would connect the eastern and western boundaries of Uttar Pradesh because of environmental concerns.

“The Allahabad High Court has restrained the proceedings of The Ganga-Express way, the 1100 kilometre long expressway from Noida to Ballia because of environmental issues. The project was started by the Mayawati government,” said Arun Kumar Gupta, counsel for petitioners.

Further he informed that court has also asked the state government to obtain clearance from the state-level Environment Impact Assessment Authority. The High Court has also quashed the earlier environmental clearance granted by the Environmental Protection Authority. The court also directed UP government not to proceed with the highway project unless and until it obtains a due clearance from the state-level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA),” Gupta added.

Meanwhile, the petitioners welcomed the court verdict.

“The condition of pollution in Uttar Pradesh is already alarming.

So how anyone can grant permission for 32 new cities and eight new SEZ (Special Economic Zones)? Taking into consideration all these, the Ganga Mahasabha had filed a petition in the High Court. We are extremely happy that the court has come up with a 93 page order. This is the victory of devotees of River Ganga,” said Jitendranand Swami, a petitioner. (ANI)

Sirpur (Chhattisgarh), May 7 (ANI): Site of an ancient civilization has been excavated in Sirpur in Chhattisgarh.

Six well constructed granaries and various stone and bronze statues, bangles, casts used for making gold and silver jewellery have been excavated.

“It was only recognised as the capital of Koshal. But after the excavations, we found ancient factories for making bangles, ayurvedic medicines, gold and silver jewellery and bronze statues. Six granaries have been excavated from the site. These are well-constructed underground granary with the capacity of storing 34 quintals of rice each.

The granaries are built in such a way that insects and rodents cannot enter. The granaries are also built underground to keep them cool.

“It is a public place because a lot of things belonging to public have been found. The granary is from the Satvahana age, two centuries before Christ and 200 years after Christ. It was the Satvahana age. We have found six granaries.

They were made from square pieces of white limestone. The base of the granary is 25 layers below the cover of the granary,” said Sharma.

The archaeologists though hope to find more granaries as only one fourth of the site has been excavated yet.

Being in the centre of India, Sirpur is said to have been an important trade centre. Various goods were sent to parts of India and Arab countries from here.

It was also known for iron statues, as there are iron reserves around the place. The goods from here were sent to Karnataka, Gujarat, Cuttack and so on.

Krishnam Raju, Murali Mohan in star fight for Rajahmundry

Hyderabad, April 4 (IANS) It will be a clash of stars in the Rajahmundry Lok Sabha constituency in coastal Andhra Pradesh as the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) has fielded veteran actor U.V. Krishnam Raju against Telugu Desam Party’s (TDP) Murali Mohan.

It is expected to be an interesting three-cornered contest as the ruling Congress party’s U. Arun Kumar is seeking re-election.

Krishnam Raju, popularly known as the ‘rebel star’, recently quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and joined the PRP of actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi. The former central minister’s name figures in the seventh list of candidates released by the PRP Friday night.

Though Krishnam Raju was keen to contest from either Kakinada or Narsapur, the constituencies he represented earlier, Chiranjeevi has pitted him against another actor of yesteryears Murali Mohan.

Krishnam Raju, who plunged into politics in the early 1990s, contested the 1991 Lok Sabha elections on a Congress ticket from Narsapur constituency, but lost.

He later joined BJP and got elected twice to Lok Sabha from Kakinada and Narsapur in the 1998 and 1999 elections respectively. He also served as minister of state for external affairs in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government from 2000 to 2004 but lost the 2004 elections from Narsapur.

Since then, he was keeping a low-profile and was unhappy with the style of functioning of the BJP. While joining the PRP a few days ago, he had said that he was impressed by the policies of megastar Chiranjeevi.

Krishnam Raju, who began his film career in 1966, was a popular actor in the 1970s and 1980s and has acted in over 180 films. He is the fourth film personality in Andhra Pradesh to join the race for this month’s Lok Sabha elections.

Popular actress Vijayshanti is contesting as the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) candidate from Medak while Chiranjeevi’s brother-in-law and film producer Allu Aravind is the PRP candidate from Ankapalli.

Though Murali Mohan, a contemporary of Krishnam Raju, has been an active leader in the TDP for many years, this is the first time that he is contesting an election.

Murali Mohan, who started his career in the early 1970s, acted in several films over the next one decade. He later turned a producer. After taking a break from active cinema, he joined TDP and became chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Film Development Corporation. He also started the construction company Jayabher Group, which built many residential projects in and around Hyderabad.

The two actors will be facing Arun Kumar, the sitting Congress MP who has been in the news for taking on media baron Ramoji Rao. However, he faces an uphill task this time as a section of the electorate in Rajahmundry feels that he has not done much for the constituency’s development.

The BJP, which won this seat in 1998 and 1999, has fielded its state general secretary Somu Veeraju but he is not considered a strong candidate.

It takes a 2-day trek to this booth

Ever imagined walking on foot for 45 kilometre on a hilly terrain to reach your destination? One can easily imagine how tiring the journey would be. But polling agents and officers don’t have a choice and will have to undertake this journey to reach Behtara-probably one of the remotest polling booths in the country.

If weather permits, polling parties would trek this distance to reach the booth located in a remote corner of Dewal block in Chamoli district. But if there is snowfall or rain, the officers have to be airlifted by helicopter to reach the place.

According to Arun Kumar, district magistrate of Chamoli, the polling booth is situated in a very remote region of Dewal block. Polling agents will have to go on ponies to reach the spot and have to leave for their destination two days prior to the date of polling on May 13.

Officials said there are more than 145 voters in this polling booth. Another booth, at Sakand in the same block, has just 65 registered voters.

In order to reach the village, the polling parties have to pass through miles of hilly terrain and many villages. Other polling stations where officials have to go on foot include Torti village (23 km), Ghaman (27 km), Choti (24 km) and Ghes (37 km).

The polling parties for Behtara would be dispatched from Tharali from where they would go to Dewal by vehicle. From Dewal, the polling agents would move on ponies, traversing through hilly terrain and resting at villages at night.

Arun Kumar Meher, an artist adept in wooden art in Bargarh district took three months to create the five feet high and ten feet wide wooden replica.

“Not everyone can go to Agra to see the actual Taj Mahal made by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz. So, for those who have not witnessed the monument, my work will give them an idea of how it actually looks like,” Meher said.

Different shades of Sal wood were used for making the replica. No external colours were added to it.ocals in the area have expressed appreciation, but believe it deserves greater recognition.

“The art piece made by Arun Kumar is something unique and should be displayed at an exhibition,” said Gajendra Singh, a local.

The Taj Mahal was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (1625-1666), the grandson of Akbar, in the memory of his beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal.

The construction of the monument began in 1631 and was completed in 1653. Twenty thousand people were deployed to work on it. The material was brought in from all over India and Central Asia. It is said that 1000 elephants were used to transport the material to the main site.
