Shiv Sena-BJP alliance confident of victory in Maharashtra assembly polls

Mumbai, Sep 19(ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena on Saturday expressed confidence about emerging victorious in the forthcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections.

“It is 45 years since Shiv Sena came into being. And this first day of Navaratri happens to be a red-letter day in the history of Shiv Sena that has crusaded for the cause of Samyukta (unified) Maharashtra. Considering all these aspects, I feel it is an auspicious timing (of) declaring the seat arrangement and we are confident of our combine emerging victorious,” said Uddhav Thackeray, Executive President of Shiv Sena party.

Leaders of both the parties confirmed that there was no bargaining for seats between the two allies.

“Today, is the first day of Dussera and we have arrived at the figures of seat sharing. Yes, it is 169 and 119. The 169 in favour of Shiv Sena and 119 for BJP and it will be interesting to note that both the figures end in 9, a lucky number; 169 and 119. And now onwards we will work on joint strategy. There is no clash of interests and now onwards we will devote to the selection of suitable candidates,” said Gopinath Munde, senior BJP leader.

In the 2004 elections, Shiv Sena had contested for 171 seats while BJP had contested for 117 and jointly they had bagged 119 seats in the legislative house of 289 members.

The alliance of Congress and regional National Congress Party (NCP) had emerged victorious in the 2004 polls. (ANI)

Pak skipper Younis Khan fractures finger

Benoni (South Africa), Sep.19 (ANI): Pakistan cricket team’s Champions Trophy dreams suffered a major set back when captain Younis Khan fractured his finger during a warm-up match against Sri Lanka here.

Doctors have advised Khan complete rest for the next three days. It is unsure whether he will be playing in the next two practice games on Saturday and Sunday.

Notwithstanding Khan’s injury, Pakistan, however, trounced Sri Lanka by 108 runs in the first warm-up match ahead of eight nation tournament.

The Pakistan team is staying in Johannesburg’s Santon Sun Hotel while in South Africa.

Team manager Yawar Saeed has expressed satisfaction over the security arrangement.

“Over half a dozen security guards have been deputed to guard the floor where Pakistan team is staying. I think in recent times this is one of the best security cover the team is provided with,” The News quoted Saeed, as saying. (ANI)

Lindsay Lohan’s seating arrangement tantrum

New York, Sep 18 (ANI): “Mean Girls” star Lindsay Lohan threw a diva tantrum at the Hammerstein Ballroom, after she decided she did not like the seating arrangements.

Lohan, 23, who is currently unemployed, began removing the seating cards or throwing them on the floor at the G-Star runway show on September 15.

“Lindsay decided she wasn’t happy with the seating arrangements,” the New York Post quoted a source as saying.

“She began taking the seating cards for celebrities like Juliette Lewis and Christian Siriano and moving them or throwing them on the floor,” the source said.

When event producers approached her for throwing Taylor Momsen’s place card to the floor, she told them to stay away.

“She said, ‘don’t [bleep]ing touch me,’ and rolled her eyes and continued moving the place cards,” the source added. (ANI)

Barrage of small meteorite impacts cause the moon to “hum”

London, September 9 (ANI): A new research has suggested that a steady barrage of small meteorite impacts cause the moon to “hum”.

But, no seismometers sent to the moon to date have been sensitive enough to hear the “hum”.

According to a report in New Scientist, Philippe Lognonne at the Institute of Earth Physics of Paris and colleagues decided to work out how loud the ring is.

The team estimated the meteorite population in the solar neighbourhood, and calculated the likely seismic signals that would be created by a range of meteorite sizes and velocities as they strike the moon.

To determine how the vibrations from these impacts would be seen by seismometers, the team used data taken by Apollo seismometers four decades ago.

These measured the vibrations created by the landings of lunar modules and spent rocket stages.

Since the precise locations and timing of these landings were known, they could be used to gauge how long it would take vibrations caused by meteorite impacts to travel through the moon, and how much the signals might dim.

Their calculations revealed space rocks with masses ranging from a gram to a kilogram do indeed create a hum, but it is subtle.

Earth’s hum, created by pounding waves, is more than 1000 times louder.

“This shows that all planets may hum, those with and those without atmosphere,” said Lognonne.

“The moon-hum’s quietness means future lunar seismometers should be able to peek deep within the moon without the hum creating problematic background noise, he added.

Instead, seismometers can focus on measuring waves created by moonquakes, tremors created by a variety of sources, including the tidal tug of the Earth.

Because seismic waves are sensitive to the type, arrangement and density of rocks they pass through, studying the quakes can reveal more about the moon’s interior.

The network of seismometers left by the Apollo missions has been shut down since 1977, so Lognonne hopes more sensitive instruments will be sent to the moon soon.

These could reach deeper than the Apollo network to measure the size of the moon’s core.

“I think the study is a great idea,” said Clive Neal of the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, who was not associated with the research.

“Estimating the actual background noise is critical for designing the next generation of seismometers to go to the moon,” he added. (ANI)

Indian job seekers cheated in Malaysia return home

Chennai, Sep.6 (ANI): A group of technicians managed to return home here after suffering a raw deal by an unscrupulous labour agent in Malaysia.

The members of the group say they were cheated by an agent, who took them to Malaysia with a promise to get them good jobs and high salaries, but it was only after some time they realised that they he had duped them.

“We demanded our agreement papers from the agent at Chennai Airport. The agent told us that he has already faxed the papers and we would receive them at the Kuala Lumpur Airport. We asked for our papers at the Kuala Lumpur Airport, we were told us that we would get them only when we cleared the qualifying exam of the company…we have already cleared the test, they are cheating us. They hired us for the post of welders but they want us to work on the post of a helper,” said Savanth Kumar Singh, one of the victims.

A social worker proved a major help to the victimised group, as he ensured food and other things of necessities for them.

“We were left with a little money to meet our daily expenses…they (Indian Embassy Officials) made our temporary arrangement at a temple, they provide us with food for two days but the other days we were left unattended…A social worker named Kamal Nathan provide us food, whenever Indian embassy failed to provide the food, then he feed us, he helped us immensely,” said Mahendra Deshmukh, another victim.

Thousands of unemployed Indians are duped by manpower sourcing agents who promise a well-paid job in Malaysia and Gulf countries.

Another batch of 11 technicians was expected to arrive on Sunday (September 06). (ANI)

Indian students demand welfare measures from Oz Govt

Sydney, Sep. 6 (ANI): The Federation of Indian Students of Australia (FISA) on Sunday urged the Australian Government to take steps for the welfare of students who are stranded after the closure of private colleges.

The FISA blamed Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard for failing to stop “the spin on the state of affairs” within her portfolio of Education.

“It is unfortunate that someone in the position of Deputy Prime Minister will lie in public. Her actions are causing great despair amongst students and eliminating their faith in the institutional robustness of Australian governance,” Hardeep Kaur student of an affected college (Sterling College) and a FISA Representative, said.

The FISA is providing support to students of the collapsed Australian educational institute that has left hundreds of students stranded.

According to the organization representing Indian students, the Australian Council of Private Education and Training (ACPET) and the NSW government authorities had repeatedly assured the students of organising alternate arrangement within 28 days, but nothing had happened.

Kaur said ACPET CEO Andrew Smith had told them that the case of 300 Community Welfare students of Sterling College is now being dealt by the Education Services for Overseas Students Act.

She said FISA sent an email to DEEWR authorities but they were still waiting for any response.

“The level of frustration amongst student is high. Many students are facing double jeopardy in that their visas and medical insurance have expired,” she said.

Kaur also called on the government to consider human rights as a vital component of society.

“Any student death will be the direct responsibility of the negligence of the Deputy PM and her ineffective structures such as DEEWR and ACPET. All deaths that are avoidable must be avoided or they should be treated as killings,” she said. (ANI)

PPP has not given any ‘guarantee’ regarding Musharraf indemnity: Kaira

Islamabad, Sep.4 (ANI): Pakistan Information and Broadcasting Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira has rebutted reports regarding Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) giving assurance not to prosecute former President General Pervez Musharraf on high treason charges.

Kaira said the PPP has not given any ‘guarantee’ to any country regarding clemency to Musharraf.

“Though friendly countries generally give advice on various matters but it is not binding on the government,” Kaira said.

In an interview with The Nation, he categorically rejected media reports that Musharraf’s step down was pre-planned and a part of a ‘secret’ arrangement.

“PPP had expelled Musharraf from Aiwan-e-Sadr with the support of masses,” he stressed.

When asked about Interior Advisor, Rehman Malik’s visit to Saudi Arabia, just before Musharraf’s meeting with king Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, Kaira said it was a routine affair and it had nothing to do with the Musharraf issue.

Kaira also denied presence of US Blackwater on Pakistani soil, saying Islamabad would never allow any private security agency to operate inside country’s territory.

“Some personnel of private security agencies of the US after taking clearance by the government are protecting the NATO trucks which transport supplies from Port Qasim to Afghanistan and nothing else,” he said.

“As the US is leading war against terror therefore its facilities and staff are more prone to terror attacks than other countries therefore they need more security to protect themselves,” he added. (ANI)

Chris Brown to wash cars, pick up trash as assault punishment

Washington, Sept 4 (ANI): R and B singer Chris Brown will be washing cars, picking up trash and removing graffiti as a part of the community service ordered by court for assaulting Rihanna.

The 20-year-old star has been given five years probation and ordered to serve six months hard labour in his home state of Virginia after pleading guilty to assaulting the ‘Umbrella’ hitmaker in February (09), reports Contactmusic.

Brown’s punishment has been revealed in a letter from Richmond, Virginia Police chief Bryan Norwood to the court in Los Angeles where Brown was sentenced.

The letter reads, “It is my understanding that the Court desires the imposed community service to be labour intensive. Along those lines, we are prepared to put Mr Brown to work in the community performing manual labour tasks, such as graffiti removal, trash pick up, washing cars, cleaning, maintaining grounds, etc.”

Brown has also been asked to pick up the bill for extra security during his punishment in case members of the public find out his location.

The letter adds, “He will be responsible for paying any costs incurred regarding the facilitation of this arrangement to include adequate security from the public (in the event they become aware of his presence) and one-on-one supervision where special projects are instituted.” (ANI)

“Optimistic” Musharraf leaves for London in ‘high spirits’ after Saudi visit

Riyadh, Sep.3 (ANI): Former Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf has returned to London after his three day visit to Saudi Arabia, and it seems his tour has yielded the desired results.

Musharraf, who had a long one to one talk with King Abdullah amid speculations of yet another Saudi-backed political arrangement in Pakistan, was in ‘high spirits’ after the meeting, sources said.

While the details of the meeting are still behind curtains, sources privy to the developments said Musharraf would disclose his future course of action only after returning to London, but as it transpires Musharraf has succeeded in his aim to ensure a safe return to Pakistan without any fears of being tried for high treason under Article Six of the Constitution.

“Musharraf was in ‘high spirits’. His body language was ‘positive’ and he sounded ‘very optimistic’,” The Dawn quoted sources close to the former general, as saying.

It is worth mentioning here that Musharraf had resigned from the Presidency last year, following an agreement in which Saudi Arabia was one of the guarantors.

The accord says that Musharraf would not be tried in any court. The US and Britain are believed to be the other two guarantors of the agreement, which has been kept secret.

While the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is pushing for Musharraf’s trial under high treason charges, observers believe that it would be naïve to think that PML-N chief and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is unaware about the agreement.

Sources also revealed Sharif may visit Riyadh next week where he is likely to meet King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz. He will also have meetings with some other Saudi leaders including Prince Mukrin, chief of the Saudi Intelligence Agency. (ANI)

Anil Ambani welcomes government’s fresh plea on gas row dispute with brother Mukesh

Mumbai, Sep 2 (ANI): Anil Ambani of Reliance Natural Resource Limited (RNRL) welcomed a fresh application filed by central government in the Supreme Court on a row over gas price with estranged elder brother Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Limited (RIL).

Top Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries, headed by Mukesh Ambani, and Reliance Natural, led by Anil Ambani, have been fighting over terms of a gas-supply agreement struck when the Reliance empire was split in 2005.

The fresh application by the government said that the government’s policies and contracts on production and gas pricing would prevail over any private arrangement.

“Reliance Natural Resource on behalf of its over 26 lakh shareholders is grateful to the Government of India for its neutral stand in proposing these amendments,” Anil Ambani told reporters in Mumbai.

“With the filing of application, the role of government in Reliance Natural Resource-RIL matter remains limited only to interpretation of just two issues. Issue A – the gas utilisation policy and issue B – provisions of the Production Sharing Contract. This is exactly the same scope of intervention that was permitted to the government of India by the Bombay High Court,” he added.

The latest tussle between the feuding brothers, which stems from the 2005 break-up of the Reliance empire built by their father, has raised concerns it could discourage investment in the sector as India scrambles to shore up its energy security.

In July, India’s apex court said it would club all petitions and applications in the case together.

The Indian government had earlier made a petition to intervene in the case, arguing that the gas is ‘state property’ and that the private agreement between the Ambanis over the gas is not valid. (ANI)

Advani’s meeting with RSS chief ends

New Delhi, Aug.29 (ANI): Leader of Opposition L.K. Advani’s nearly two-hour-long meeting with Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat ended on Saturday a short while ago.

Sources, however, did not reveal what had been discussed at the meeting.

Advani had arrived at the RSS’s Delhi headquarters – Keshavkunj – at around 3 p.m. for a meeting with Bhagwat.

The meeting took place amid reports that the RSS has readied a succession plan for the BJP, a plan that could facilitate an end to the internal crisis ravaging the party’s rank and file. However, BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar told reporters at a press conference that no succession plan has been discussed.

The RSS is believed to have told the BJP leadership to set its house in order. In a sign that this is being given serious thought, top brass of the BJP met at Advani’s residence this morning for about two hours and briefed him about their discussions with Bhagwat on Friday.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj had joined other party colleagues – Arun Jaitely, Ananth Kumar and M.Venkaiah Naidu at the residence of Advani to reportedly discuss a viable succession plan.

It is reliably learnt that though there are no immediate changes in the top leadership, a succession plan is being readied after discussions with the RSS on Friday night.

Sources said that the RSS has firmly asked BJP leaders to end infighting in the party and reach a consensus on a new party chief.

The decision to call Jaitley and Swaraj together to a meeting at the RSS headquarters is seen as very significant, as they are the leading contenders for the party leadership, sparking speculation that a power-sharing arrangement might have been arrived at.

Jaitley looks the front-runner for the party chief”s job while Swaraj is tipped to take over from Advani as Leader of Opposition. If implemented, the party could see Naidu becoming Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, a post currently held by Jaitley.

The RSS has felt that if the factionalism is not quickly resolved, the issue could prolong till the end of the year. (ANI)

New Delhi, Aug.29 (ANI): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, has joined other party colleagues at the residence of Leader of Opposition L.K. Advani to reportedly discuss a viable succession plan.

According to a Times Now television report, Swaraj’s visit to the Advani residence is significant in the wake of the BJP’s parent body — the RSS — reportedly readying a succession plan with Arun Jaitley being tipped for BJP President and Sushma Swaraj as the Leader of Opposition.

Flood-hit UP villagers forced to fend for themselves

Pipraghat (UP), Aug 26 (ANI): Pipraghat villagers are caught in double trouble. Hit by flood, they have fallen victim to the government’s complacency.

The village is among the many hit by the rising waters of Narayani River in Kushinagar district. Thousands of people have been rendered homeless.

The villagers of Pipraghat complained that they have not received any government help so far.

“This is Pipraghat village in Kushinagar district, which is very backward. Twenty-five villages have been affected by floods and 20,000 people are suffering from it.

But the government has not made any arrangement. It has only been providing us with a boat and 2 litres of kerosene oil.” said Prabhunath Yadav, a resident.

People say they are left with very little food and are living on shells.

“The water has not receded. We are fetching shells and eating them and there is also no help from the government,” said Batulia Devi, a villager.

The villagers are facing a severe shortage of drinking water, apart from kerosene oil to cook their food.

The government officials say kerosene oil is on its way to reach people.

“Twelve thousand litres of oil has been ordered which will be distributed to people. The revenue administrative officer will make a list of people and those in the list will get two litres of oil,” said Mahendra Shukla, district supply officer.

Narayani River has swollen due to rains in Nepal, where it originates.

The river flows through Champaran district in Bihar to Maharajgunj and down Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh.

Heavy downpour after a delayed monsoon has wreaked havoc in many districts of Uttar Pradesh which skirt the India-Nepal border since the waters of swollen rivers and reservoirs in Nepal rush southwards into these districts. (ANI)

Kanye West’s girlfriend shows off bikini bod in Barcelona

London, August 19 (ANI): Kanye West’s girlfriend Amber Rose was spotted showing off her curves as the two holidayed in Barcelona.

The former stripper was seen sporting a bright orange bikini on the beach before she went topless sunbathing.

Rose, who is also bisexual, recently revealed how her rapper beau does not mind her colourful past.

“Kanye knew my life, so when it was, ‘Oh, Kanye do you know she was a stripper, that she used to date girls?’ he was like, ‘Tell me something I don’t know,’” the Sun quoted her as saying.

The couple went their separate ways earlier this year, but got back together after the singer made arrangement for his girlfriend to star alongside him in Jay-Z’s video for “We Run This Town”. (ANI)

Archaeologists find evidence of Britain’s earliest Iron Age town

London, July 16 (ANI): Archaeologists from Berkshire, UK, have discovered evidence of an Iron Age town underneath the remains of a Roman settlement in north Hampshire, which they say could be Britain’s earliest Iron Age towns with a planned layout.

According to a report by BBC News, the discovery was made by the University of Reading’s Archaeology Department, which has been excavating at the Silchester Roman site, Calleva Atrebatum, since 1997.

A street-grid was found to have been in place before the Romans came in AD 43. Archaeologists have also discovered evidence of widespread burning at the site.

They believe this, along with other finds, suggests that the site could have been destroyed at the hands of queen Boudicca, who in AD 60/61 led a major uprising against the occupying Roman forces.

“After 12 summers of excavation, we have reached down to the 1st Century AD and are beginning to see the first signs of what we believe to be the Iron Age and earliest Roman town,” said Professor Michael Fulford, director of the Silchester Town Life Project.

“The discovery of the underlying Iron Age settlement is extremely exciting. While there are traces of settlement beneath Roman Verulamium (today’s St Albans) and Canterbury and close to the site of Roman Colchester, none of these resembles the evidence that we have here at Calleva of a planned town,” he said.

“The completely new street grid implemented later by the Romans could have been a thumbs down on the British arrangement,” he added.

According to Professor Fulford, “We now have evidence that the town was burnt down sometime after AD 50 and before AD 80.”

“The possibility that this was at the hands of Boudicca when leading the largest British uprising during the Roman occupation is hugely significant. It was not thought the revolt passed this way,” he said. (ANI)

Government rejects Varun’s plea for more security

New Delhi, July 7 (ANI): The Government on Tuesday rejected Bharatiya Janata Party MP Varun Gandhi’s plea for more security following threat from an underworld outfit.

According to sources, Varun Gandhi currently has a special Y category protection, which includes three Police Services Officers (PSOs) round the clock, one escort and pilot vehicle, and after several evaluations the arrangement was found sufficient.

Government also dismissed Maneka Gandhi’s allegation in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that the Home Ministry had adopted a “lackadaisical” approach to threats to Varun’s life.

Maneka in her letter, had referred referred to the arrest of seven alleged associates of underworld don Chhota Shakeel who had apparently come to Delhi to kill an advocate who had taken up Varun’s case in the hate-speech incident.

However, the Home Ministry officials said that proper investigation was conducted and the seven arrested by the Delhi Police were questioned separately during which it was clear that they had come to kill a lawyer, who was among the one representing Varun’s case in the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said it was common sense that no group will gain anything by killing only an advocate but even if it was so, it was a serious matter.

“Varun Gandhi is an honourable member of this House (Lok Sabha) and the youngest MP from our party. A notorious underworld group has decided to kill him,” she said, demanding to upgrade Varun Gandhi’s security. (ANI)

Rudd says navy sex betting ring ‘disturbing’

Canberra (Australia), July 6 (ANI): Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has expressed his dismay over reports of a sex betting ring on board a ship of the Australian Navy.

“Can I say I’m sure the Chief of Navy has all those matters under active investigation and that appropriate action will be taken? These alleged behaviours are disturbing, but it’s important also to get to the facts of it all and we’ll await the investigations by the chief of navy to establish all those facts,” Rudd told reporters here.

Rudd’s comment came after it was revealed that a group of sailors from HMAS Success had been sent home for allegedly organizing a challenge to have sex with as many female crewmates as possible.

The Seven Network reported that the sailors detailed their contest in a document called The Ledger, where dollar values were placed on each woman during an overseas deployment in May.

Larger amounts were offered if the sailors could sleep with a female officer or a lesbian and sailors challenged each other to have sex in various locations, including on top of a pool table, the report said.

The arrangement was discovered while HMAS Success was visiting Singapore.

The captain ordered the sailors to return to Australia immediately after they were formally interviewed.

On Sunday’ Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard called for a full investigation of the incident by the Australian Defence Force.

Gillard said nothing should preclude women from enjoying a full and rewarding career in the Australian Defence Force.

“Obviously this is a matter for our defence forces to deal with and to fully investigate,” Gillard told Network Ten on Sunday.

She said both the government and the nation had been saying for a long time that women should be able to join the army, the navy or air force.

“We don’t want to see anything that precludes women from having a good career in our armed forces if that is what they choose to do with their lives. Clearly these allegations need to be fully investigated,” she said.

The Defence Department confirmed a formal inquiry was underway, but said: “The veracity of any allegations has yet to be confirmed.” (ANI)

Jordan slams Peter Andre for seeking sole custody of kids

London, July 5 (ANI): Katie Price a.k.a Jordan has slammed estranged husband Peter Andre for seeking sole custody of their kids.

The glamour model and the ‘Mysterious Girl’ hitmaker have three kids – Junior, four, Princess, two, and Harvey, Katie’s son with footballer Dwight Yorke, reports News of the World.

Jordan said: “To want to take babies away from their mother is sick. You’re the lowest of the low and I can’t even believe I ever married you.

“Sick is exactly what you are. People have got into your head. It’s unbelievable how you’ve changed,” she added.

A pal of Jordan said: “The priority has become sorting arrangement with the kids. It’s the hot-button issue now.

“The battle lines have changed.

“Kate is petrified about losing her kids, she’s terrified about losing her career – but most of all she’s overwhelmed by loss because she always thought Pete would come back to her in the end,” the pal added. (ANI)

Heat wave hits wildlife in Jammu

Jasrota, Kathua, July 1 (ANI): Acute water shortage in Jammu has led to death of a number of animals in and around the Jasrota Wildlife Sanctuary.

The natural water reserves have all dried up due to the heat wave and the authorities have been unable to arrange drinking water for the zoo inmates.

Due to the lack of drinking water, many animals and birds have been found dead in the sanctuary.

Thirsty animals are now being found roaming in the populated areas around the sanctuary.

The villagers have launched a campaign to save the wildlife by providing drinking water to them.

“We saw that for the past few days many animals were found dead due to the lack of water. So, we have started a movement to save them. We will fill all the dried ponds situated outside the sanctuary so that they can drink the water,” said Amit Kumar, a villager.

The residents from the villages of Kathua district showed their love for the thirsty animals and took initiative to protect them from heat and shortage of water.

“There are thousands of animals in this sanctuary but there is hardly any arrangement of drinking water for them inside the sanctuary. Thus most of them are turning towards the villages. We villagers have started keeping water in pots outside our homes,” said Varinder Kumar, another villager.

The animals are now being adopted by the villagers, who serve them food and water for survival. (ANI)
