Terrorists may use stolen Army vehicles to strike, warns Pak intelligence

Lahore, May 14 (ANI): Pakistan’s intelligence agencies have warned the concerned security authorities that militants could use stolen vehicles belonging to army officials to carry out terror strikes.

According to an intelligence input, a Toyota Corolla owned by Lieutenant Colonel Qazi Habibur Rehman was stolen from Islamabad on April 30, while a motorbike belonging to Major Muhammad Abdul Hassan was also stolen from Rawalpindi earlier this month, and that these vehicles may be used by militants to target important locations.

The intelligence report has been sent to all regional police officers (RPOs), city police officers (CPOs), district police officers (DPOs) and the Lahore capital city police officer (CCPO), The Daily Times reports.

Following the report, the Punjab Home Department has directed all concerned agencies to beef up security in and around all important establishments and government buildings in the province.

Security officials have also been asked to maintain a tight vigil and scan all vehicles entering or leaving the province from each entry and exit point. (ANI)

PCB boss Butt accuses Army, Judiciary of land grabbing

Islamabad, Mar.23 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt knows how to remain in news, as he has now accused the Army and judiciary of land grabbing.

Butt’s shocking disclosure came during a hearing in the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which was discussing an audit report, which had revealed massive financial mismanagement in the board’s accounts.

Butt said that the Army officials and judges belonging to the superior judiciary have occupied PCB’s land worth millions.

“They just came and started constructing their houses without any formal transfer of land and payment. No official record of land transfer was available with the revenue department,” The News quoted Butt, as saying.

“Almost 18 acres of expensive land is in the use of the Army and another six has recently been grabbed by the judiciary. The land belongs to the PCB and as such we want it back. I would soon be sending a request of meeting to the Army chief and the chief justice and want to apprise them of the issue,” Butt said.

Delegates present during the meeting, which was presided over by Chaudhury Nisar Ali Khan, were dismayed at Butt’s claims and said the allegations were strange. However, Khan said the committee would extend all support to him to help recover the land from the two powerful institutions

During the meeting, Butt made another shocking revelation, saying he was being threatened by a Karachi based gang to hand over PCB’s land worth over five billion rupees to it.

“First I was threatened and then offered money in exchange for this favour but I refused,” Butt said. (ANI)

Army officials pay tribute to martyred Captain Deepak Sharma in J-K

Srinagar, Mar. 5 (ANI): Army officials on Friday paid tribute to Captain Deepak Sharma, who was martyred on Thursday during an encounter with Hizbul Mujahideen militants in Tral region of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Captain Deepak Sharma killed at least three militants before he died and ensured that none of his colleagues came to any harm,” said Lieutenant Colonel J.S. Brar, Public Relation Officer (PRO), Ministry of Defence, J-K.

“The area where the operation took place is a densely populated area and it was very difficult to carry out the operation there, Captain Sharma exhibited good leadership qualities in tackling it,” he added.

In all, four militants were killed in the encounter.

Captain Sharma is the second Army officer to be killed in an encounter in Jamu and Kashmir in less than a fortnight.

Last month, Captain Devinder Singh Jass was killed in an encounter in Sopore district.

Insurgents backed by Pakistan have been fighting security forces for the last two decades in the region, where officials say tens of thousands have been killed since 1989. (ANI)

Zardari being unnecessarily targeted for his overture to India: Editorial

Islamabad, Sep.17 (ANI): An editorial in one of the leading English dailies of Pakistan has highlighted that President Asif Ali Zardari is being unnecessarily targeted and criticized by certain quarters in the country even if he attempts to address the long pending issues with India in his bid to de-escalate tension between the two neighbour countries.

The Daily Times editorial said while Zardari is condemned for his overture to India, similar actions taken by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif goes unnoticed in the country.

“President Zardari is pilloried if he makes a friendly overture to India; a similar overture made by Mr Nawaz Sharif is either ignored or actually praised,” the editorial said.

It also brought to light how several retired army officials and bureaucrats have suddenly jumped out of their retirement to denounce Zardari’s every action.

“Retired generals and retired bureaucrats whose ‘stand-still’ strategy with India in the past has brought Pakistan to its present crisis point, have crept out of their retirement to express their shock at how President Zardari is harming Pakistan through his diplomacy with China, the United States and the European Union,” the editorial stated.

The editorial went on to add that Zardari is right in his part to woo the international community, especially China and the US.

“Pakistan needs a lot of placatory diplomacy, not hostile ‘action’, given its past failed strategies,” it concluded. (ANI)

Karachi, Sep 7 (ANI): Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain has has said that even after 62 years of Independence, the concept of one nation was not flourishing in Pakistan.

Reading out Article 6 from the Constitution and certain clauses relating to the appointment of judges of the superior courts from the Charter of Democracy, Altaf said implementation of Article 6 would result in the hanging of 200,000 to 300,000 people.

He observed that the PPP and the PML-N were not implementing the CoD.

The MQM chief announced to forgive PML-N president Nawaz Sharif, Army officials, law-enforcement and intelligence agencies, who had launched the June 1992 operation against his party.

He asked the government to constitute a truth and reconciliation commission to identify the persons responsible for all wrongdoings, including imposition of martial laws and abrogation of the Constitution so that they could be asked to come forward to make a public apology over their wrongdoings.

He said this in his telephonic address from London at an Iftar party hosted in the honour of journalists, columnists and anchorpersons at the Lal Qila ground here on Sunday.

The MQM chief called upon Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to convene an all-party conference to discuss and resolve all the longstanding issues, including the problem of Balochistan.

He asked the government to stop the operation in Balochistan, recover all the missing persons and hold talks to resolve the problem. (ANI)

He is accompanied by his Principal Secretary S Subramanyam and Chief Security Officer A S C Wesley. Indian Space Research Organisation chief G. Madhavan Nair and his team are monitoring a low flying remote sensing plane. Satellite images are being used to try and trace the place. So far, 41 images have been taken but none of them have revealed any information about the chief minister’s whereabouts.

As of now the Indian Government has said that it has not requested the United States for help in the matter, but has confirmed that the unmanned vehicle that is presently deployed in the north eastern part of the country is being kept on standby.

The Army, Indian Air Force (IAF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, Andhra Police Greyhound commandos along with local police and district officials has entered the Nallamalla Forests to launch the massive search and rescue operation for Reddy.

About 250 Army personnel with night vision devices have joined the search operations.

“We have deployed two columns and one Ghatak (jungle warfare specialist) platoon in the area for searching the Chief Minister. Our troops are equipped with night vision devices such as goggles and hand held thermal imagers,” Army officials said.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi is expected to arrive in Hyderabad shortly to be with Reddy’s anguished family members and to get a hands on assessment of the search operation.

She has already sent Union Law Minister and Congress general secretary in charge of Andhra Pradesh affairs Veerappa Moily and Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Prithviraj Chauhan to the city to monitor developments. Chauhan told press persons that the State and Central Governments are sparing no efforts to search for the chief minister.

Meanwhile, National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan has said that while both the state and central governments are extremely concerned and worried about the missing chief minister, all available resources are being deployed for the search.

He said Army and Air Force helicopters have been conducting a search of the region. He also confirmed that two fixed-wing aircraft with synthetic aperture radar capabilities have been pressed into service.

Forces on the ground are also on the lookout for the missing helicopter and its individuals. arayanan said that the lack of communication is a major problem and also ruled out the probability of a Naxal strike.

“I don’t think the Naxals have the capability to bring down a helicopter,” he said.

“There is no question about calling off the search till we discover what happened there. We are hopeful we will find the Chief Minister, his chief secretary and PSO without serious injuries,” he added. (ANI)

Indira Gandhi backed plot to kill Pak Army officials: Brig. Ahmed

Lahore, Aug.31 (ANI): Former Pakistan Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director General Brigadier (retired) Imtiaz Ahmed has alleged that former Punjab Governor Ghulam Mustafa Khar had hatched a conspiracy to kill several key Pakistan Army officials, and claimed that the plot was backed by the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

In an interview with a private television channel, Brigadier Ahmed said that Khar had chalked out a plan to kill several important commanders of the Pakistan Army in a bomb blast.e said the plan, according to which the Indian intelligence agency RAW would provide arms to Pakistan, was also approved by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

“An Indian official, Joshi, had arranged Khar’s meeting with Gandhi and finalized the plans,” Brigadier Ahmed said.

However, Khar has rebuked Brigadier Ahmed’s allegations saying he never knew any Indian official named Joshi.

He said some elements had hatched conspiracies to diminish his popularity and acceptance with the Armed Forces.

“I had visited to India to visit the graves of saints, not hatch a conspiracy,” The Daily Times quoted Khar, as saying. (ANI)

Pak Army arrests colonel, lawyer for spying

Islamabad, May 14 (ANI): An army colonel along with a lawyer have been arrested on espionage charges, Pakistan’s Parliamentary Affairs Minister Babar Awan told the National Assembly.

Responding to parliament question, Awan informed the house that Colonel Shahid Bashir and his close friend Nadeem Shah, who is a Rawalpindi based lawyer, were currently being investigated by army officials on charges of spying.

“Tomorrow, the CPO (Rao Mohammad Iqabl) of Rawalpindi will provide us further details and we would duly inform us in this regard,” Awan said.

Shah’s mysterious disappearance had caused furor, with Rawalpindi District Bar Association (DBA) President Taufeeq Asif warning of launching a massive protest against the police.

Shah is an ex-GDP pilot but joined the legal profession later on.

The Supreme Court had also taken sue-motu notice of Shah’s disappearance, and expressed its displeasure over the lack information provided by the CPO Rawalpindi.

According to details provided to the superior court, Shah and his friend Col Shahid Bashir went out for dinner together at an undisclosed location in Islamabad but disappeared mysteriously.

In his statement before the court, the CPO said that preliminary information gleaned from various sources suggested that he had been picked up by some intelligence agencies for investigation.

Shah’s elder brother had accused the police of involving him in espionage charges to save their skin. (ANI)

Violent incidents mar final phase of polling

New Delhi, May 13 (ANI): On the final day of polling for the Lok Sabha elections, incidents of violence were reported from 24-Parganas district of West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnore and Uttarakhand’s Dehradun.

A Trinamool Congress worker, Shaminul Haque, was killed hours before polling began and at least 10 others were injured in clashes with CPM activists at Baliguri under Barasat Parliamentary constituency.

Workers of the BJP and the Congress clashed in Dehradun.

The BJP MLA from Tehri, Dinesh Joshi, had allegedly brought army officials to cast their votes.

“The Representation of People Act says that you cannot get people to vote like that. The use of government vehicles is prohibited even if it is an army vehicle. This is a clear-cut violation of the code of conduct,” said Congress candidate Vijay Bahuguna.

The polling had to be stopped for over an hour because of the clash.

“They think that the army vote is going to the Bharatiya Janata Party. So they are thinking it will be their loss. The voting has been stopped since then, for an hour almost,” said, Dinesh Joshi of BJP.

An incident of breaking of an electronic voting machine was reported in Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh. (ANI)

Pak military divided in its resolve to counter Taliban threat: Report

New York, May 6 (ANI): Even though Pakistan has initiated a military offensive against the Taliban under immense international pressure, and the army has claimed sanitizing scores of militants, Pakistan’s military is divided in its resolve to root out the extremists from country’s soil, a leading US daily said.

A report in the New York Times said that amid the chaos in Pakistan, the United States, which has expressed concerns about the ‘existential threat’ and has vowed to provide huge financial aid to thwart it, still remains unpopular in Pakistan.

Furthermore, the report said that despite the increasing Taliban threat some religious parties still sympathize with the outlawed outfit.

The now ‘tattered’ Swat peace deal was popular among the people of the region because they hoped that the accord will bring peace to the restive valley which had been facing a war like situation for the last two years.

Large numbers of people, who are now forced to flee from regions like Buner and Swat, have criticized the military operation as it has left them homeless.

Now that the peace deal has been broken, it is also evident that TNSM chief Sufi Muhammad does not have any control over the militia.

The extent of unwillingness of some of the military officials to fight against the Taliban can be gauged from the statements of a Supreme Court lawyer Anees Jillani.

Jillani recently visited Swat and found out that there were many army officials who were hesitant to fight against the extremists.

“When you ask them why you are not defeating them, they ask: ‘Why should we?’ And you ask about Sufi Muhammad, they say: ‘What’s wrong with him?” the newspaper quoted Jillani, as saying.

Some political parties are also against the offensive, and have blamed the government of breaking the deal.

General Secretary of the Jamiat-u-Ulama-i-Islam-S, Yousuf Shah said the government failed to keep its part of the Swat deal that is why the TNSM chief Sufi Muhammad failed to convince the Taliban fighters.

“For 20 years these people have been struggling peacefully for Shariah, but it was no use.It is a natural thing when democratic avenues are not working to take up arms,” Shah said. (ANI)

Sri Lanka Army claims capture of another LTTE post

Colombo, Apr.29 (ANI): The 58th division of the Sri Lankan Army has reportedly captured another LTTE post in Rettavaikkal.

Army officials said that the Rettavaikkal is a tactically important location considering the LTTE’s hold has been reduced to less than six square kilometers of territory. ccording to reports, the army continues to mount pressure on the Tamil Tigers breaking through their two defensive fortifications in the no-fire zone on Tuesday.

Army sources said that they are yet to capture LTTE supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran.

The Sri Lankan Government has clarified that there is no ceasefire, though heavy combat operations have ended.

In India, the Vice Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Noble Thamburaj and the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Sureesh Mehta, have said that a watch is being kept on the southern and eastern coasts to prevent the entry of escaping LTTE rebels. The Southern Naval Command and the Coast Guard have been placed on alert to counter the LTTE threat, said Lt. General Thamburaj. (ANI)

Ukraine army can’t pay to feed overseas peacekeeper troops

Kiev – Cash shortages have left Ukraine’s military unable to feed peacekeeping troops deployed overseas, Sehodnia newspaper reported Friday. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence for peacekeeper troop maintenance has thus far been budgeted 9.2 million dollars, against a planned 40 million dollars, said Viktor Korendonovych, an Army spokesman.

“At this rate, we will not be able to feed out troops past May,” he said.

Peacekeeping operations affected by the shortage would include Ukrainian troop deployments to Liberia, Kosovo, and Afghanistan.

The first two operations are under UN control. Less than 10 Ukrainians were working with NATO forces in Afghanistan, according to Ministry of Defence statements.

The Ukrainian mission to Liberia is of some local importance locally, as the Ukrainians operate one of the few relatively reliable helicopter transport units in the region.

Withdrawal of the Ukrainian helicopter squadron from Liberia is now impossible, Korendonovych said, as there is not enough money to pay to bring the aircraft home.

Since January, Kiev has attempted to reduce expenditures with dramatic cuts to funds supplied to state agencies, particularly ones not contributing to the economy. Among the hardest-hit has been the Ukrainian military.

A plan to convert Ukraine’s still-substantial draftee army to a modern professional standard has become impossible, as the country lacks sufficient funds to pay professional soldiers, army officials said last week.

More than 550 Ukrainians currently are serving abroad in peacekeeping missions.

The duty is highly sought within the Ukrainian military as salaries average from 700 to 2,000 dollars a month – well below rates paid in European armies, but still some ten times what a Ukrainian soldier currently earns at home.(dpa)

India protests to Pakistan over border firing

New Delhi – India Saturday alleged that Pakistani troops violated a ceasefire agreement and fired at frontline Indian positions in the northern Jammu and Kashmir state leaving a soldier wounded.

Pakistani forces fired at Indian troops in the Uri sector 70 kilometres west of state capital Srinagar overnight, the PTI news agency reported.

It was the first “major ceasefire violation” since relations between the nuclear-capable neighbours sunk to a new low after November 2008 Mumbai attacks which Delhi said were carried out by Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba group.

A defence spokesman told PTI that the Pakistani troops fired between 1,500 to 2,000 rounds at the Indian posts along the Line of Control (LoC) between 10 pm on Friday night and 3 am on Saturday morning.

The LoC is a de facto border dividing the disputed Kashmir region into two parts, one administered by India and the other by Pakistan.

Indian troops retaliated to the “unprovoked firing” by the Pakistani side but an Indian soldier was injured in the shoot-out, the report said.

The NDTV network reported that Indian army officials at the local level lodged a protest with their Pakistani counterparts on Saturday.

Officials told the news channel that Pakistani forces had resorted to firing to provide cover to Muslim militants to infiltrate into the troubled Indian region where a separatist insurgency that has claimed over 40,000 lives since late eighties.

There have been at least two encounters with militants near the border regions since Friday, the NDTV report said.

India says militants trained and supported by Pakistan regularly infiltrate into its part of Kashmir to launch major attacks. Pakistan, however, denies the charge and calls Kashmiri militants freedom fighters.

India and Pakistan announced a ceasefire on the borders of the two countries in 2003.

New Delhi has been voicing concern over the ceasefire violations on the border from time to time.

Indian army officials have claimed that there have been 34 incidents of ceasefire violation on the LoC last year. (dpa)
