Giant killer Del Potro believes he is the biggest tennis star on the circuit

New York, Sep.16 (ANI): Argentine tennis player Juan Martin Del Potro still can’t believe he has won this US Open, but now believes he is the biggest new star in tennis.

“It’s my best sensation,” he said. “Since my childhood I have dreamed of this trophy. I have realised my dream. It is an incredible moment. It’s amazing match, amazing people. Everything is perfect. Maybe tomorrow, maybe next week I will be believing in this. Now, I can’t believe it,” The Mirror quoted Del Potro, as saying.

The 6 ft 6in Argentine caused a massive upset by beating a fustered Roger Federer in five thrilling sets in the US Open final.

The world No.1, the reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion, was seeking his sixth successive title after winning 40 consecutive matches at Flushing Meadows.

But he was simply battered into submission by the 20-yearold with a murderous forehand making his first appearance in a Grand Slam final. Despite a horrible start, Del Potro triumphed 3-6 7-6 (7/5) 4-6 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 in four hours and six minutes – the longest US Open final for 20 years. (ANI)

Manchester City not in 47-mn pounds deal for Tevez

London, Sep 12 (ANI): No deal was struck with Manchester City to pay a British record transfer fee of 47 million pounds for Carlos Tevez to MSI, the company fronted by Kia Joorabchian which owned the player before his move to City.

A spokesman for Kia Joorabchian last night denied that Manchester City had struck a deal to pay 47 million pounds for Tevez to MSI.

A report last night alleged that City had agreed to pay 47 million pounds for the Argentine forward, as opposed to 25.5 million pounds, the figure widely reported as the fee City paid to lure him from Manchester United.

“It’s not true,” a spokesman for Joorabchain said of the 47 million pounds figure. The spokesman said that he expected Joorabchian, and possibly City, to issue a formal denial today.

Rumours have circulated for several weeks that City had agreed to pay considerably more for Tevez than the 25.5 million pounds reported at the time of his move, The Independent reports.

Last night’s reports suggested that City had agreed to an initial 15 million pounds payment for Tevez, with two 16 million pounds payments to come.

If City did agree to pay 47 million pounds for Tevez, as alleged last night, that figure would smash the British record of 32.5 million pounds that City paid in 2008 for Robinho.

It would cast fresh light on the magnitude of the ambitions of City’s Middle Eastern owners, and on their willingness to pay massive sums for players, the paper reports. (ANI)

Iran’s ‘wanted’ defence minister warns Israel not to attack its N-facilities

Jerusalem, Sep. 4 (ANI): Iran’s controversial new Defence Minister Ahmad Vahid has warned Israel not to attack the country’s nuclear facilities.

“Every move from the Zionist entity against Iran will be met with a harsh and powerful response from Iran,” The Jerusalem Post quoted him, Vahidi saying.

Vahidi also said that the overwhelming support he had garnered in the parliamentary vote on his appointment “attested to the anti-Zionist spirit of the Iranian parliament and people.”

Vahidi is a wanted by Interpol for masterminding the Buenos Aires Jewish centre bomb blast in 1994 that claimed 85 lives.

Buenos Aires has called General Vahidi’s inclusion in Ahmadinejad’s new Cabinet “an affront to Argentine justice and to the victims of the brutal terrorist attack”.

US President Barack Obama has termed Vahidi’s inclusion in the Cabinet as “disturbing”.

Vahidi gained support earlier this week when lawmakers said they would not bow to foreign pressures to reject him.

The chairman of the Iranian foreign policy committee, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, said the allegations “will not have any negative impact on the assessment” of General Vahidi’s suitability for the job.

“Rather, it may increase his vote,” he noted.

Ahmadinejad has faced questions about the experience and expertise of some of the choices for his 21-seat cabinet. But on Thursday, he managed to win approval for many key posts that included the foreign, interior, intelligence ministries and Ahmad Vahidi as defense minister.

The parliament also backed Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi as health minister, making her the Islamic republic’s first female minister since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. (ANI)

Robinho says Tevez will have no regrets about joining Man City

London, July 16 (ANI): Brazilian football star Robinho has promised his Argentine counterpart Carlos Tevez that he will not regret snubbing Chelsea to join Manchester City.

The Brazilian forward, 25, is ideally placed to pass comment as he was pursued by the two clubs back in August last year before opting for Eastlands.

Tevez has been faced with a similar dilemma since deciding to quit Manchester United.

The former Old Trafford hero opted for City despite being courted by Chelsea and Robinho maintains he will soon realise it is the right choice.

He said: “What I can say to Carlos is that I had to make the same choice last season. And I don’t regret choosing City. I have not done since the moment I signed.

“We all feel like a big family at City and that’s another point that I would mention to him,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

Robinho is also praying his close pal Elano will also stay. The midfielder is set for crunch talks with manager Mark Hughes in the next few days after helping Brazil win the Confederations Cup. (ANI)

Ferguson accuses Tevez of betraying Man U

London, July 14 (ANI): Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has accused Carlos Tevez of betraying Manchester United by indulging in a deal with Manchester City in January.

The Argentine footballer has signed a five-year contract with City to complete a 26.5 million pounds move, after his loan contract with Manchester United expired.

Fergie said that he made numerous efforts to get the 25 year-old to stay back. I think they did the deal around January because I spoke to him and gave him an offer on the Inter Milan night and he never came back to me,” Fergie said.

“I phoned him on holiday – he never came back to me. I texted him twice – he never got back. Obviously he had made his mind up,” he added. (ANI)

Argentine mistress of Governor Sanford admits being woman in his life

New York, June 30 (ANI): The Argentine mistress of South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, Maria Belen Chapur, has admitted that she was the woman who drew the rising GOP star away from the country for six days earlier this month.

Aides to the Republican governor had explained his absence by saying that he was hiking the Appalachian Trail.

She issued a short statement to Buenos Aires’ C5N TV station, tacitly admitting to the affair.

“Of my private life I won’t speak, not now or in the future. It’s been made public enough already, a fact that causes me terrible discomfort,” the statement said.

Chapur, a 41-year-old mother of two, said she had firm suspicions of who hacked into her e-mail and leaked steamy exchanges between her and the governor, who had been a rising star in the GOP.

The State newspaper of Columbia, S.C., obtained the e-mails in December, the Daily News reports.

“Since I don’t have sufficient proof and live in a state of law, I’m obligated to keep their identity anonymous. I am not the judge of anyone; I leave all that in the hands of God,” Chapur’s statement said.

Sanford’s e-mails to Chapur have fascinated both hopeless romantics and serious politicos alike.

If reports are to be believed, the emails are colorful, descriptive, and unabashedly romantic, at times to the point of being schmaltzy and embarrassing.

“Do you really comprehend how beautiful your smile is? Have you been told lately how warm your eyes are and how they softly glow with the special nature of your soul?” the Politico quoted Sanford as having written.

In between the mushy parts, the two of them write about everyday events.

While Maria talks about taking a lazy day trip and reading an Alan Greenspan book, Sanford writes about meetings in New York, the National Governor’s Conference and an invitational with then-presidential candidate Senator John McCain.

According to reports, the letters give the impression that Sanford was a real romantic with a knack for writing.

“The most cherished gift a lover can give and receive is a love letter from the heart,” says romance coach Leslie Karsner, who sells prewritten love letters through a website called ‘Love Letters Now’. (ANI)

South Carolina Gov. Sanford’s love letters to mistress show his knack for writing

Washington, June 28 (ANI): South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford’s e-mails to his Argentine mistress Maria have fascinated both hopeless romantics and serious politicos alike.

While Maria talks about taking a lazy day trip and reading an Alan Greenspan book, Sanford writes about meetings in New York, the National Governor’s Conference and an invitational with then-presidential candidate Sen. John McCain.

According to reports, the letters give the impression that Sanford was a real romantic with a knack for writing.

“The most cherished gift a lover can give and receive is a love letter from the heart,” says romance coach Leslie Karsner, who sells prewritten love letters through a website called ‘Love Letters Now’.

“It’s very romantic, especially with forbidden love. If you take the politics out of it, it’s the story of a man whose heart was captured and he was willing to run the risk of being caught.

“He’s good at keeping her on the edge. He’s good at encouraging future discussions. He’s a busy governor, so the moments they have together are fleeting, and these letters become that much more valuable,” Karsner adds.

When asked what makes the letters so effective, psychologist and relationship coach Anne-Renee Test notes that Sanford and Shapur are about their emotions in the letters.

Test points out that Sanford even compares Shapur’s affections to the unconditional love he felt from his mother.

“They talk about the intensity of teenage love, which is extremely powerful, very real, and it can feel very intense like this. That’s the same intensity you read in these letters. They’re beautiful. I’m jealous,” says the expert.

Sex has been indirectly mentioned, but not detailed, in the letters.

Sanford writes: “The erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself) in the faded glow of night’s light – but hey, that would be going into the sexual details.”

Maria responds: “I never gave you sexual details but you don’t need to. . .close your eyes and just remember. I’ll do the same.”

The one aspect of their letters that may appear negative is that both the governor and his mistress acknowledge that they may never see one another again.

“Although I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to meet again, this has been the best [thing] that has happened to me in a long time,” she writes, noting later that the situation is likely “hopelessly impossible” and that the love letters may pose a danger to his career.

“I genuinely enjoyed our special friendship…but it was all safe. Where we are is not,” he wrote. (ANI)

Rising GOP star Sanford admits being unfaithful to wife

Washington, June 25 (ANI): South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, who rose through the Republican ranks over the past decade, from congressman to governor to potential 2012 presidential candidate, has tearfully admitted having an affair with an Argentine pen pal, diminishing his future GOP chances.

Sanford, after pulling off a bizarre vanishing act this week, reappeared on Wednesday to admit that he was having an affair that involved secret visits with his mistress in Argentina.

South Carolina’s Governor arrived home from a secret six-day trip to Buenos Aires to tearfully admit he has been having an affair with an Argentine pen pal.

“I spent the last five days of my life crying in Argentina,” Sanford said at an extraordinary, rambling press conference in Columbia, S.C.

Sanford, who was until this week one of the GOP’s most promising rising stars, resigned as chairman of the Republican Governors’ Association but did not step down from his job running South Carolina.

His staff initially told reporters that he had left town on Thursday to go hiking on the Appalachian Trail, but the Governor returned on Wednesday morning on a flight from Argentina.

“I’ve let down a lot of people. That’s the bottom line. I’ve been unfaithful to my wife,” Fox News quoted Sanford, as saying.

E-mails obtained by The State, a South Carolina newspaper, capture deeply personal exchanges between the Governor and the woman, whom the newspaper called only by her first name, Maria.

“My heart cries out for you, your voice, your body, the touch of your lips, the touch of your finger tips and an even deeper connection to your soul,” Sanford wrote in one of the e-mails, dated last summer.

The newspaper said a McClatchy correspondent reached Sanford’s mistress, but she declined to be interviewed.

Sanford’s wife, Jenny, who apparently had known about the affair for five months, had asked him to leave home two weeks ago and to stop talking to her and their children. In a written statement, she said the couple needed a trial separation, but that her husband had since “earned a chance to resurrect our marriage.”

The Governor apologized profusely to his family, his staff and the people of South Carolina. He said he’s let down his four sons in a “profound way,” though he said his wife had known about the affair for five months and they were trying to work through it. (ANI)

DNA test confirms ‘Argentine Fritzl’ fathered seven kids with daughter

London, May 28 (ANI): Armando Lucero, the 67-year-old Argentine man accused of raping his three daughters over two decades, has fathered seven children with one of them, DNA tests have confirmed

Lucero was placed in a maximum security prison on May 11 for “aggravated and repeated sexual abuse”. It is believed that he raped the three girls from early childhood.

The tragic drama unfolded in the city of Mendoza, about 620 miles west of Buenos Aires, reports The Telegraph.

Police officials are currently waiting for the results of psychological exams of Lucero, who has come to be known as the “Monster of Mendoza” in a case chillingly drawing similarities to the Austrian incest case of Josef Fritzl.

In that case, Fritzl, 73, was sentenced in March to life in prison for imprisoning his daughter in a secret dungeon for 24 years, and for the death of one of the seven children he had with her.

Lucero faces a maximum penalty of 50 years in prison. The woman at the center of the drama, now 35, fled her family home to obtain protection from the local authorities.

The woman decided to break her silence, she said, because her father threatened to sexually abuse one of her daughters. (ANI)

Ronaldo blasts Fergie’s tactics to counter Messi and company

Rome, May 28 (ANI): Manchester United’s star striker Cristiano Ronaldo has criticized club manager Alex Ferguson’s tactics in the Champions League final here, saying they were not good enough to neutralise Barcelona’s front line led by Argentine star Lionel Messi.

United lost to Barcelona 2-0, ending their dream of becoming the first team to win two consecutive Champions League crowns.

Leo Messi won his personal duel against Ronaldo as he headed in Barca’s second.

Ronaldo risked Fergie’s wrath by saying: “We didn’t do well. The tactics were not good and everything went wrong for us. We were only in it for 10 minutes and we never found ourselves again.”

According to The Sun, Ronaldo’s rant could cast further doubt on his United future with Real Madrid desperate to land the Portuguese winger this summer.

Ferguson blamed his defence after goals from Samuel Eto’o and Messi stunned United.

Fergie also believes some of his players will feel they let themselves down on the night. (ANI)

‘We will destroy Manchester United, warns Barca’s Messi

London, May 27 (ANI): Barcelona and Argentine superstar Lionel Messi has warned that Manchester United face a humiliating roll over in Wednesday night’s Champions League final in Rome.

Predicting that Barca would see the face-off as a revenge outing for last year’s semi-final loss, Messi said that the Catalan giants were now better prepared and that Manchester United would not be able to repeat its 2008 heroics.

Messi told SunSport: “I don’t think Manchester will play like that again. They have players to play football and will be a bit more open. We’re the best team in Europe in an open game and this will give us the advantage. If they come out to play it will be a beautiful game – and I hope it will benefit us.”

“I remember last year’s semi-final. They were two evenly-matched games, very tight. The tie was decided by the great goal they scored.”

Back on May 2, Barcelona thumped Real Madrid 6-2 at the Bernabeu in La Liga’s title sealer. For Messi, that game proved any team, however great, which attacks Barca does so at their peril.

In this season’s dramatic Champions League semi-final against the Catalan giants, Chelsea spent practically 180 minutes camped inside their own half with Barcelona frantically trying to find a breakthrough.

Messi added: “The game in Madrid shows why Chelsea did what they did – sit back and try not to leave any spaces for us to play our football.

“For that reason, I say that for us it’s an advantage when a team plays football and tries to match Barcelona as equals. Manchester can be that team with the players they have.”

Messi said: “I was very frustrated and angry after last year’s semi-final loss to United. I was so sad we couldn’t make the final after coming so close. But the way we’ve turned things around this season gives us more desire and hunger to beat them this time. I’m very confident we’ll win.” (ANI)

Barca’s Messi takes a swipe at Man U’s Ronaldo

London, May 20 (ANI): Barcelona’s Argentine football star Lionel Messi has had a dig at Manchester United’s Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the Champions League final, saying: It’s not about you and me.

Messi, 21, said: “Nobody plays to be the best player in the world. This is a team game. I don’t see it as a tussle between Cristiano and me. It will be a Barca-Manchester battle. What is important is that Barcelona are champions of Europe on May 27 in Rome.”

“If we are champions it will certainly help me, but this is secondary,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.essi’s words will not be lost on Ronaldo.

The Portugal star was criticised for caring more about himself than the team after his strop when subbed in the Manchester derby.

Boss Alex Ferguson wanted to rest Ronaldo after securing a 2-0 cushion but the winger wanted to stay on and beat Nicolas Anelka to the Premier League top scorer gong.

Messi has an even bigger prize in sight. Barcelona has already won the Double in Spain and he is now eyeing a Treble to match United’s triumph in 1999. (ANI)

Tevez claims ‘old man’ Fergie doesn’t like me

London, May 16 (ANI): Argentine striker Carlos Tevez has dubbed Manchester United coach-cum-manager Alex Ferguson an ‘old man’ hell-bent on lowering his value in the transfer market.

According to The Sun, Tevez has grown increasingly frustrated at being dropped for Manchester United’s big matches and, according to his national boss Diego Maradona, fears Fergie wants him out.

Maradona said: “I spoke with Tevez on the phone and the first thing he said to me was ‘That old man doesn’t like me. He’s not playing me and he is lowering my value’.”

“When he comes to Argentina, I’m going to reassure him. As I see it, he’s fast, incisive, he scores goals. He is about to be called up for Argentina and he will be playing,” Maradona added.

Ferguson insists he wants to keep the on-loan star, who is owned by Kia Joorabchian.

Fergie even claimed United had made Tevez an offer to stay, though this was denied by the Iranian businessman. (ANI)

Tottenham Spurs join in the bidding race for Argentine Tevez

London, May 11 (ANI): Tottenham Hotspurs are fighting Manchester City, Chelsea and Real Madrid to land Argentine forward Carlos Tevez.

The Argentinian striker believes his time is up at Manchester United but wishes to stay in the Premier League.

Sources close to Tevez have told SunSport that Spurs boss Harry Redknapp loves the player so much he will try to buy him from his owners for around 25 million pounds.

Wheeler-dealer Redknapp is planning a major clear out at White Hart Lane in a bid to raise substantial funds for new players.

He wants to get rid of Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko, England attacker Darren Bent and midfielder David Bentley – and will also consider offers for others.

Redknapp can guarantee Tevez first-team football and is convinced the popular striker would be a major hit in North London.

He reckons Tevez could take Spurs to the next level and give them a chance of competing for Champions League places. (ANI)

Davydenko to face long odds in Nadal Barcelona match-up

Barcelona – Russian Nikolay Davydenko checked in for another successful work day on the clay Friday while Rafael Nadal took advantage of a quarter-final walkover as the pair prepared for a Saturday semi-final clash at tennis’ Barcelona Open.

Top-seeded world number one Nadal put in some practice time after learning the day before that seventh-seeded Argentine opponent David Nalbandian would not be fronting up for their match due to hip problems which intensified during the previous round.

Davydenko, playing for only the second week in succession on the ATP after dealing with a heel injury which forced him from the Australian Open as well as Masters 1000 play in March, was busy on the clay honing his game.

The world number eight grappled with the aggressive, uncomfortable style of Radek Stepanek for two and a quarter-hours before emerging with a confidence-building 6-7
(4-7), 6-2, 6-2 quarter-final win.

“I’m not thinking just now about playing Rafa,” said former number three Davydenko, who stands 2-3 against the king of clay from Mallorca.

“You never know about tomorrow, but I’m not gonna worry about it now. I’m going to relax and enjoy my life. Hopefully, playing him will help my game so that I can improve even more next week in Rome.

“You can say the odds for Rafa are 100 per cent,” he said as he refused to speculate on tactics for his near-impossible weekend task against the four-time tournament champion.

In the bottom of the draw, Chile Fernando Gonzalez left Spain disappointed as he put out second seed Fernando Verdasco in a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 battle.

The South American who skipped Monte Carlo last week and arrived in Barcelona full of enthusiasm, will play for a spot in his second final of the season after winning at home in Vina del Mar when he takes on David Ferrer.

Last year’s losing finalist to Nadal beat compatriot and 2004 winner Tommy Robredo 6-3, 6-4.

Davydenko is putting no pressure on himself, letting his injury comeback move at its own speed. He reached a Monte Carlo quarter- final last week and has already bettered that with the final four in Barcelona.

The Barcelona week is only his second back on a regular schedule, and his progress is rapid after a Monte Carlo quarter-final last week.

“I’m very happy with my results. I’m playing well now but my form is not ready for a Grand Slam – at least not yet.” (dpa)

Dutch Royal parade attack suspect dead

Amsterdam (The Netherlands), May 1 (ANI): A man, who killed five people and injured 13 in an attempt to kill members of the Dutch royal family, has died, according to media reports.
The suspect, a 38-year-old identified by Dutch media as Karst Tates, had been in critical condition since the attack during the Netherlands Queen’s Day holiday yesterday.

According to Sky News, before his death, he reportedly confessed to police that his actions were aimed at the royal family.

Tates rammed his car into the foot of a monument after mowing down people gathered for the annual royal procession in the central city of Apeldoorn.

Twelve people remain in hospital after Tates drove through police barricades towards the bus carrying members of the royal family.

It is believed his vehicle had been stopped and turned back earlier in the day by police.

But it remains unclear how he was able to breach security and charge through barriers, police lines and the crowds and almost reach the royal parade itself.

Queen Beatrix, who witnessed the event, told the nation in an unscheduled televised address that she was “speechless that something so terrible could have happened”.

Official celebrations were cancelled in many areas, and the national flag was flown at half mast at the royal palace at Apeldoorn.

TV footage showed Tates black Suzuki Swift, with its roof and bonnet already crumpled from smashing through police barriers, racing past the royal bus in bright sunshine and slamming into a column.

Other film showed bodies being hurled into the air and members of the royal family covering their faces in shock and dismay.

“I think that it has become clear that this happened with premeditation,” Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende said.

Shortly before the attack, the Queen, her son Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and his popular Argentine-born wife, Princess Maxima, had walked up to the crowd behind police barricades, accepting flowers and shaking hands. (ANI)

Ferguson fears losing Tevez

London, Apr 25 (ANI): Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted for the first time that he fears Manchester United could lose Argentine football star Carlos Tevez at the end of the season.

United and Tevez’s owner Kia Joorabchian have been unable to reach an agreement over his valuation.

Joorabchian wants United to pay the 32 million pounds that was verbally agreed when he came on loan at the start of last season. United value him at much less – nearer 20 million pounds and the Argentine striker has voiced his displeasure about his future not being sorted out.

Asked if United were now vulnerable to him going elsewhere, boss Ferguson said: “Of course we are, no question about that.

“That is our weakness. His loan period finishes at the end of the season. I think he genuinely wants to stay here and that is what we are working towards and I have told him that repeatedly – but there is no more I can do. He should be here next season. I certainly hope so,” The Sun quoted Ferguson, as saying.

Tevez, 25, also complained publicly this week about being left out of the side and that he spends too much time on the bench.

Ferguson has done his homework and found Tevez has actually played more than both Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov.

“I don’t want him to be unhappy because he is an important player for us. The difficulty is when you have got the options I have got. I bought another striker in with Berbatov, as well as having the option of playing Ronaldo as a striker – you create problems for yourself because all good players want to play in every game,” he said.

“They can’t play in every game in this league – it is impossible. But, he’s played more minutes than Rooney and Berbatov this season. He does give fantastic effort. That is one of his best qualities. He is a tiger, he fights for every ball, he holds it up well, he is a handful to play against, we know that.”

“But I go back to the point that he has played more minutes than any of the other players up front and I think if he looked at that he would think differently. That is what we say to all the players. When you deal with the squad I have got, they are all internationals,” Ferguson added. (ANI)

Argentine soccer star Tevez ready to quit Man U

London, Apr.23 (ANI): Argentine soccer star Carlos Tevez is weighing up offers from other clubs regarding next season, as he is sure that Manchester United will not take up their option to buy him on a permanent basis.

According to the Daily Express, Tevez’s two-year loan deal ends this summer and Manchester United, who have paid six million pounds in loan fees, are understood to be reluctant to pay 26 million pounds to Media Sports Investments, the owners of the player’s economic rights, to make him theirs.

Tevez would like to stay at United, but is unhappy that coach Sir Alex Ferguson leaves him out of the big games.

“There are many players [at United] and they all need to play but I have not played in important matches, like the ‘classico’ against Chelsea. Those are the games that I like to play in,” he was quoted, as saying.

“I have trained every day and never said anything against my team-mates or anyone, but it is true that there are other options for next season. I have many offers, not only from Spain. I need to see which club I can go to and what can be done. We must not only consider the money, I also have to ensure my family feel comfortable, especially my daughter,” he added. (ANI)

1ST LEAD: Nadal and Federer open clay season with solid wins By Bill Scott, dpa

Monte Carlo – Roger Federer and Davis Cup team-mate Stan Wawrinka advanced into a Swiss showdown at the Monte Carlo Masters on Wednesday as Rafael Nadal made a winning start to another clay-court marathon season.

Newly-married second seed Federer had to fight through as Italian Andreas Seppi saved three match points before exiting 6-4, 6-4 to the 13-time Grand Slam champion.

Federer will next play Wawrinka, who defeated Marcello Vassallo Arguello 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 after two and a half hours. Federer holds a 3-0 record against his compatriot.

Top seed Nadal was broken twice in his 2009 clay debut but had more than enough game to overhaul Argentine Juan Chela 6-2, 6-3.

The Spaniard is again attempting what for anyone else would be the impossible, pointing at five straight titles in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Roland Garros this spring.

His quest began with success as he ran his record on clay to 134-4 since 2005, with a 22-1 mark in finals on the surface.

The reigning Wimbledon, Paris and Melbourne champion now stands 25-3 this season.

Russian sixth seed Nikolay Davydenko made his return from a heel injury with a win, defeating Croatian Ivo Karlovic, 6-4, 6-3. Spanish seventh seed Fernando Verdasco advanced over German Philip Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-4.

Argentine David Nalbandian, seeded 12th, made a great escape against Marcello Granollers of Spain 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 while Italy’s Fabio Fognini moved into a match with Andy Murray in the third round after dispatching Croatian 14th seed Marin Cilic 6-2, 6-0.

Federer was pleased enough to win his clay opener but always looking for improvement.

“I thought I played okay, I had a good stretch at the end of the first set, beginning of the second. Maybe I could have made it easier for myself in the second.

“I had some opportunities. He hung in there and I didn’t play my best. But still happy I came through so good.”

Federer and Wawrinka have played twice on the ATP, with Federer winning both but they have never met on clay.

“He’s a good friend of mine,” said Wawrinka. “It will be nice to play him on the centre court here on clay. I’ve played him three times already and always lost.

“But those were indoor and hard court. It’s gonna be fun to play tomorrow.”

Federer was playing his first match since marrying longtime girlfriend Mirka Vanrinec last weekend in his hometown of Basel.

Federer starts his clay season with a win

Federer starts his clay season with a win Monte Carlo – Roger Federer and Davis Cup teammate Stanislas Wawrinka advanced into a Swiss showdown in the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters on Wednesday as Federer kick-started his spring clay season.

The newly-married second seed had to fight through as Italian Andreas Seppi saved three match points before exiting 6-4, 6-4 to the 13-time Grand Slam champion.

Number 13 Wawrinka spent more than two and a half hours in his struggle with Argentine Marcello Vassallo Arguello to seize a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory.

Federer and Wawrinka have played twice on the ATP, with Federer taking a 2-0 lead into their first meeting on clay.

They also played at the start of the year at the AAMI Classic in Melbourne, which resulted in another Federer victory in the unofficial Australian Open tuneup event.

Federer was playing his first match since marrying longtime girlfriend Mirka Vanrinec last weekend in his hometown of Basel.

He has lost the last three Monte Carlo finals to Rafael Nadal, with the Spanish top seed due to play later on Wednesday.

Seppi had his heroic stand in the penultimate game, finally holding serve as he saved three match points. But Federer finished off the win in just under 90 minutes a game later as he improved to 18-4 on the season.
