Murray does not like to flash his cash

London, May 21 (ANI): Andy Murray, the world’s third best tennis player, does not like to flash with his cash.

He always flies economy, only taking business class – not first – when he needs to sleep on a long-haul flight.

“I feel like I am lucky but I also feel I have earned it. I appreciate all of that stuff. It’s not normal to me. I know that if I work hard I get more opportunities. I have had the same friends since I was 15 and moved to Barcelona. I’ve had the same girlfriend for four years and I always stay close to my family. I don’t think I’ve changed a lot,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

“I think it is so nice to have my own place. I lived in a dorm when I was 15 to 17 then I shared a room in Spain. After that I spent two years staying in my coach’s attic in Wimbledon. I have a nice big TV, a comfy sofa, a Pacman arcade machine with all the old-school games on it, a pool table, PlayStation and dartboard. My flat’s quite blokey,” he added. (ANI)

Freedom makes kids ‘more active’

London, April 6 (ANI): Kids who are allowed to visit friends and go shopping on their own are more active, according to a new study.

Researchers at the University of Bristol tracked the movements of 1,307 children using GPS technology.

They also asked the pupils, aged ten and 11 from 23 schools, to complete a questionnaire about how much freedom they were given to travel outside the home unsupervised by their parents.

Participants said they were never, sometimes, often or always allowed to go to local shops, a big shopping centre, park or playground, sports centre, swimming pool, library, school, cinema, friend’s house, amusement arcade, bus stop or train station.

The researchers found that both boys and girls given greater freedoms were much more active on weekdays than those closely watched by adults.

“This is the first study to show that freedom to move around unsupervised in the local and wider neighbourhood is directly related to how physically active children are,” the Scotsman quoted Dr Ashley Cooper, senior investigator on the study, as saying.

“These findings suggest that giving children more independence to move outside is related to greater levels of physical activity, which is important for health.

“But we also know that parents restrict how much independence they give their children for very good safety reasons.

“More work now needs to be done so we can discover how to get that balance right,” Cooper added.

The study was published in the International Journal of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity. (ANI)

Jacko’s personal items catalogued for public viewing

Washington, Mar 10 (ANI): Five separate catalogues of Michael Jackson’s personal items have been published and for the first time will be viewed by the public as they go for auction.

The auction begins on April 21, 2009 in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, reports Fox News.

The collection includes two canvasses, one each by Macaulay Culkin and Michael Jackson, circa 1991 and 1998 respectively. And a carousel horse “gifted” by Elizabeth Taylor.

What could be seen most among the lot, were sculptures of children, especially boys, a life size sculpture of two boys on a bicycle and a bronze sculpture of two boys playing leapfrog were among them.

There were also paintings and drawings of Jackson acting as a Pied Piper, and plenty of vases, furniture, rugs, runners, tables, and more sculptures, and even a gigantic gold throne with red velvet upholstery.

The biggest part of the auction was made up of Jacko’s wardrobe, costumes that had been used in his shows, and his collection of pinball machines and standing video arcade games.

Next on the catalogues were real cars, a 1988 Lincoln Town Car Limousine, 1990 Rolls Royce Silver Spur II Touring Limousine, a 1999 Rolls Royce Silver Seraph Limo with 24 K gold embellishments designed exclusively by and for Jackson, and a 1954 Cadillac Fleetwood Series 60. (ANI)

Cosmic radio noise that booms six times louder than expected

Washington, Jan 8 (ANI): A research team from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in the US has announced the discovery of cosmic radio noise that booms six times louder than expected.

The finding comes from a balloon-borne instrument named ARCADE, which stands for the Absolute Radiometer for Cosmology, Astrophysics, and Diffuse Emission.

In July 2006, the instrument launched from NASA’s Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Palestine, Texas, and flew to an altitude of 120,000 feet, where the atmosphere thins into the vacuum of space.

ARCADE’s mission was to search the sky for heat from the first generation of stars. Instead, it found a cosmic puzzle.

“The universe really threw us a curve,” said Alan Kogut of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. “Instead of the faint signal we hoped to find, here was this booming noise six times louder than anyone had predicted,” he added.

Detailed analysis ruled out an origin from primordial stars or from known radio sources, including gas in the outermost halo of our own galaxy.

The source of this cosmic radio background remains a mystery.

ARCADE is the first instrument to measure the radio sky with enough precision to detect this mysterious signal.

To enhance the sensitivity of ARCADE’s radio receivers, they were immersed in more than 500 gallons of ultra-cold liquid helium. The instrument’s operating temperature was just 2.7 degrees above absolute zero.

This is the same temperature as the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation, the remnant heat of the Big Bang that was itself discovered as cosmic radio noise in 1965.

“If ARCADE is the same temperature as the microwave background, then the instrument’s heat cannot contaminate the cosmic signal,” Kogut explained.

The sought-for signal from the earliest stars remains hidden behind the newly detected cosmic radio background.

This noise complicates efforts to detect the very first stars, which are thought to have formed about 13 billion years ago – not long, in cosmic terms, after the Big Bang.

Nevertheless, this cosmic static may provide important clues to the development of galaxies when the universe was less than half its present age.

Unlocking its origins should provide new insight into the development of radio sources in the early universe. (ANI)
