Consumer Reports magazine said on Wednesday that Apple iPhone 4 owners can eliminate reception problems by enclosing their phones in the “Bumper” case Apple sells.

July 15 (Reuters) – One of China’s leading newspapers slammed Zijin Mining Group on Thursday for its poor handling of a poisonous leak at a copper mine, as the company said it would cooperate with regulators in an investigation.

Zijin (2899.HK) (601899.SS) suspended trading of its shares on Monday after news broke about the spill of wastewater containing acidic copper from its Zijinshan Copper Mine, into the Ting river in the southeastern province of Fujian.

But the contamination began much earlier, on the afternoon of July 3, and the public was initially kept in the dark about the spill, which went on for nearly 24 hours.

Communist Party mouthpiece the People’s Daily said the company explained that it did not report the accident earlier as “they thought it was just as small matter”.

“How can a company like Zijin Mining, which is an industry with a high risk of pollution, not take a ‘small problem’ seriously?” the newspaper said in a commentary.

“In industries with a high risk of pollution, small problems are the hidden dangers that lead to large accidents, and you can’t ever just count on your luck,” it added.

The company said it it would fully cooperate in a probe into the spill after receiving a notice from the Fujian Regulatory Bureau of the China Securities Regulatory Commission regarding the incident. It gave no other details.

Thousands of fish — a total 1.89 million kg — were killed by the 9,100 cubic metres of waste water that escaped from a mine containment tank, according to state media reports. [ID:nTOE66D075]

Though water from the river has been declared safe to drink, the 60,000 people affected by the spill are still wary, because the river is a chemical blue colour and smells unpleasant.

Villagers are now drawing their water from wells, but worry even those may be polluted. The firm has halted production and said it would compensate fish farmers for their losses.

The Chinese government has become increasingly worried about public anger at environmental problems, especially pollution.

“Mass incidents” — or riots and protests — sparked by environmental problems have been rising at a rate of 30 percent per year, according to China’s environmental protection minister.

Bumper solves iPhone 4 antennas woes, Consumer Reports confirms

Consumer Reports magazine said on Wednesday that Apple iPhone 4 owners can eliminate reception problems by enclosing their phones in the “Bumper” case Apple sells.

The findings could presage a decision by Apple to offer iPhone 4 owners a free Bumper, as the publication confirmed yesterday that it has been in contact with Apple over its testing results.

Two days after the respected consumer testing organization said it could not recommend the iPhone 4 because of major reception issues when users touched the external antenna, the publication’s engineers went back into their lab to retest with iPhones equipped with Bumpers.

Apple sells iPhone 4 Bumpers — small plastic and rubber skirts that fit around the outside edges of the smartphone — for $29. Until the iPhone 4′s debut, Apple had stayed out of the phone case market.

“With the Bumper fitted, we repeated the test procedure, placing a finger on the Bumper at the point at which it covers the gap [on the lower left side of the case],” said Paul Reynolds, Consumer Reports’s electronics editor, in an entry on the magazine’s blog on Wednesday afternoon.

The publication tested only Apple’s Bumper, although another Consumer Reports editor said yesterday that it was planning on evaluating several different cases.

“The result was a negligible drop in signal strength — so slight that it would not have any effect, in our judgment.”

On Monday, Consumer Reports explained its could-not-recommend decision by describing testing of three different iPhone 4s in its radio frequency (RF) isolation chamber, where a cell tower emulator simulates real-world signals.

The magazine’s engineers also tested several other AT&T-sold phones, including the iPhone 3GS and the Palm Pre. None of those phones showed the signal-loss problems of the iPhone 4 .

Complaints about the iPhone 4′s call reception surfaced within hours of its June 24 launch, as buyers griped that touching the external antenna — embedded in a steel band that encircles the case — often dropped calls or caused the signal strength indicator to plummet.

Apple acknowledged that holding the iPhone 4 could weaken the cellular signal, then a week later claimed that the iPhone 4′s signal formula was flawed and promised to update the software.

Consumer Reports was not the first to say that a case, even Apple’s minimalist Bumper, prevented problems: Users and bloggers, including some with extensive antenna design experience , have said the same in the last weeks.

Apple also recommended a case in its June 25 statement, one of only two public comments the company has made regarding reception complaints. “Avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases,” Apple said then.

But today’s report from Consumer Reports was the first confirmation of a case remedy from an independent, commercial-quality testing facility.

“The Bumper solves the signal-strength problem,” said Reynolds on Wednesday. “So does a piece of duct tape, as we reported earlier, or just being careful how you hold the phone. But these options all put the onus on consumers to solve or pay for a fix.”

Tuesday, Mike Gikas, a senior electronics editor at Consumer Reports, called on Apple to make good on the problem, a stance that Reynolds repeated today.

“We insist that Apple pays for the fix, not consumers,” said Gikas in an interview with Computerworld on Tuesday. “The best solution would be for Apple to issue a case with the iPhone 4, or give consumers a credit at its online store for one.”

Gikas also confirmed that Consumer Reports had been in touch with Apple over the initial testing it reported. “I know we’re in talks,” Gikas said. “But that’s pretty routine. We have talked with Apple in the past over testing results … we discuss them with all the [cell phone] makers, so this isn’t an exception.”

Others have said Apple should issue free Bumper cases to current iPhone owners, and to those who purchase the smartphone in the future. Wednesday, Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi said the solution would be Apple’s least expensive solution.

“We think that Apple’s most appropriate response would be for it to issue rubber (or any other non-conductive material) cases to all iPhone 4 owners, and on all new iPhone 4 sales,” Sacconaghi said in a note to clients. “It could be done immediately, would directly address the Consumer Reports concern, and would be financially immaterial.”

Sacconaghi said that it would cost Apple $1 or less per unit to hand out Bumpers, significantly less than his estimates of $75 per iPhone 4 for an in-store fix or $250 per unit for a full recall.

Currently, Apple cannot keep up with Bumper demand. The basic black Bumper now indicates a delay of five-to-seven business days between ordering and shipping — the same as two weeks ago — but the case in other colors won’t ship for three weeks after ordering.

QAim: Explosive growth in mobile phone services

iPhone the most used device in Finland

QAim Oy, a Finnish company that specialises in analysing mobile services and improving
user experiences, used its CEM4Mobile Metrics solution to analyse over 20 million page
loads made via mobile devices during the period from 1 January to 30 April 2010. Based
on the findings from this survey, the Apple iPhone has become far and away the most
popular mobile phone model in Finland for browser-based services. Nearly one in every
three page loads, views, or unique visitors were from users of iPhones.

According to information released in May based on research conducted at Aalto University
in Finland, the most common mobile phone model in Finland is the Nokia 2760. According
to the study, 4.7 per cent of all mobile phones in Finland in 2009 were Nokia 2760
models.

In browser-based services, Nokia accounted for a 60.7 per cent share of all page loads,
meaning that Nokia’s dominance in mobile services is still unassailable. These page
loads originated on 199 different phone models.

Apple’s 33.9 per cent share of page loads was achieved with just two different devices:
the iPhone and the iPod Touch music player, which uses wireless local networks.

“The fragmentation of the market for mobile devices creates a huge headache for
developers of mobile services. The Android-based devices already on the market, as well
as many more probably still to come, will have a major impact on both Apple and Nokia’s
market shares in the use of mobile services. We are keeping a close eye on this trend,”
said Janne Aalto, CEO and founder of QAim.

In the sample surveyed, the CEM4Mobile Metrics solution collected over 20 million page
loads made with 623 different mobile phone models, most of which include a broad range
of features that influence service usage.

“In order to ensure market coverage, service providers and developers end up having to
develop several different versions of their browser- or app-based services to cope with
different operating systems or display sizes. We believe that with good phone
compatibility for various content services will have a greater influence on consumer
purchasing choices,” Janne Aalto explained.

The Nokia 2760, reported to be the most popular mobile phone model in Finland, was
ranked 69th on the list according to number of page loads in browser-based services. Of
the page loads collected by the CEM4Mobile Metrics solution, only 0.12 per cent were
generated using this model of mobile phone.

Apple users are  eagerly awaiting  ” Apple’s iPhone 3.0 release time “. Apple’s Vice President, Scott Forstall,  announced that the new iPhone 3.0 OS would be released sometime today, June 17, 2009. Apple unveils $99 iPhone at WDDC 2009

Apple has unveiled its intention of dominating the smartphone market by slashing the cost of the iPhone 3G to just $SU99 at this years Worldwide developers Conference in San Francisco.

The Apple iPhone 3G sports none of the bells and whistles of the iPhone 3GS, also announced at the conference, and with only 8 Gbytes in memory is firmly positioned at the entry level of the smartphone market.

Undercutting the current entry level iPhone by$US100, the iPhone 3G will feature a 2 Gbyte still image only camera with fixed focusing, up to 10 hours of talk time and 24 hours of audio playback, as well as up to six hours of WiFi internet browsing.

Coinciding with the announcement, Apple also unveiled a much higher specification iPhone, the iPhone 3G S with a suped-up three megapixel camera, video filming and editing capabilities and automatic focusing.

The new iPhone 3GS will be available in either a 16 Gbyte configuration for $US199 and a 32 Gbyte model for $US299.

For an extra $US100 the iPhone 3G S also provides voice control for accessing names in your address book, or for recalling the names of tunes in your iPod, with built in support for 31 languages or regional variations of languages.

Both the entry level and higher spec’d iPhones have access to the Apple iPhone App Store with more than 50,000 applications available for download.

Both of the new iPhones feature user selectable portrait or landscape oriented keyboards, Spotlight search capability, SMS and MMS messaging functions and voice memo recording capabilities.

The iPhone 3G and 3GS will be available on June 19 in the US and July 7 throughout the rest of the world and both have access to the Apple iPhone App Store with more than 50,000 applications currently available.

The Apple iPhone lost its spot as top-selling phone to the BlackBerry Curve in the first quarter of 2009, but that doesn’t necessarily spell the end of the iPhone’s market dominance, said Ross Rubin, an analyst for researchers The NPD Group.

According to an NPD survey, the five top-selling smartphones between January 1 and March 31 were the BlackBerry Curve, the Apple iPhone 3G, the BlackBerry Storm, the BlackBerry Pearl (not including the Pearl Flip) and the T-Mobile G1 with the Android operating system.

The Curve was the big winner for two main reasons, said Mr. Rubin. One was Verizon’s “Buy one, get one free” deal for the BlackBerry. “That promotion pushed it over the top,” he said. Another reason is that the Curve was available through four major carriers, while the iPhone remains exclusive to AT&T.

Not to take anything away from the capabilities of the Curve, however. “It’s lightweight, inexpensive and thin, and it embodies the characteristics that makes the BlackBerry a popular phone,” said Mr. Rubin.

The fact that the Curve shot ahead on an aggressive promotion signals promise for the much awaited Palm Pre. “When a carrier supports a device, it does well,” Mr. Rubin said, adding that Sprint has promised record spending to market the Pre. The Pre may be the Apple iPhone’s most prominent challenger in coming months.

Also notable was entry of the T-Mobile G1 into the top five phones, which signals the growth of the smartphone category despite the typically higher cost of their calling plans. “We see smartphones continue to gain share in the overall handset category,” said Mr. Rubin.

With the BlackBerry promotion over, the Apple iPhone may recapture the top slot, unless a new iPhone is about to come out, said Mr. Rubin. He said that shipments of a current model tends to dry up prior to a new release, which can drive down sales numbers.

Research In Motion’s BlackBerry Curve overtook Apple’s iPhone to become the top-selling consumer smartphone in the United States during the first quarter of 2009, according to research published by NPD Group on Monday.

NPD’s monthly “Smartphone Market Update” report, based on online surveys of consumers, now ranks the best-selling consumer smartphones in the U.S. as follows:

1. RIM BlackBerry Curve (all 83XX models)
2. Apple iPhone 3G (all models)
3. RIM BlackBerry Storm
4. RIM BlackBerry Pearl (all models, except flip)
5. T-Mobile G1

NPD attributed the recent BlackBerry sales surge to an aggressive “buy one, get one free” promotion for the phone by carrier Verizon Wireless. It helped boost RIM’s share of the consumer smartphone market 15 percent to capture nearly 50 percent of the market in the first quarter, NPD said in a statement.

“Verizon Wireless’ aggressive marketing of the BlackBerry Storm, and its buy-one-get-one BlackBerry promotion to its large customer base, contributed to RIM capturing three of the top five positions (in U.S. smartphone sales),” Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis at NPD, said in a statement. “The more familiar, and less expensive, Curve benefited from these giveaways and was able to leapfrog the iPhone, due to its broader availability on the four major U.S. national carriers.”

Apple Struggles With iPhone In Indian Market – A Report Apple’s iPhone failed to woo Indian users, but why, what’s the main reason behind it, is it its high cost or anything else?

There are shedloads of people in the Indian market but no one is interested in buying the gadget (iPhone).

Analysts estimated that just 11,000 iPhones have been sold in the whole sub-continent since its launch in September 2008.

According to LiveMint.com even technology giant Apple didn’t consider that the phone would do well in India. It only allocated 50,000 Iphones to that market in the first place.

Of over 120 million cellular phones sold in India yearly, about six million are of the smartphone range, and Nokia holds the market with between 60-70% market share.

Various reasons are given for the lukewarm debut of the iPhone in India: price, promotion, and distribution. However, the price is not the problem. Loads of other smartphones are selling well in India.

The major reason seems to be that Apple and its carrier partners including Bharti Airtel and Vodafone didn’t endorse the iPhone as aggressively as was done in other regions.

After all, it is tricky to bring a new religion to a country where there hundreds of other gods that are targeted for the local market in a much better way.
