Now it’s your turn, Syrians tell Assad

BEIRUT: Thousands of antigovernment protesters took to the streets across Syria on Monday after a TV appearance by president Assad, shouting for him to step down and chanting “Gaddafi is gone, now it’s your turn Bashar!”

Security forces opened fire in Homs, killing at least one person, a witness said. Crowds there and in several other cities were angered by Assad’s remarks on TV and taunted him with warnings that his regime would be the next to unravel, as Muammar Gaddafi’s 42-year rule was crumbling under a rebel advance in Libya. Human rights groups say more than 2,000 people have been killed in the government’s crackdown on a five-month-old uprising. The regime has unleashed tanks and snipers in an attempt to stamp out the revolt.

In a now-familiar refrain, Assad promised reforms – including parliamentary elections by Feb – but insisted unrest was being driven by armed gangs & Islamic militants , not reform seekers.

Do your colleagues look better on Mondays?

(Reuters Life!) – British women take four times as long to get ready for work on Mondays than on Fridays, while men also put less effort into their appearance as the week goes on, according to research by retail chain Debenhams.

Lifestyle

On average, women spend 76 minutes getting ready on Mondays — with almost a third of that spent on their hair — 18 minutes on make-up, 16 minutes trying on different combinations of clothes and the rest taken up by showering and washing.

This is reduced to 40 minutes on Tuesdays and continues to decline as the week goes on, falling to 19 minutes on Fridays.

“Make the most of looking at your work colleagues on a Monday morning, because that’s as good as they’re going to get,” said Debenhams spokesman Ed Watson.

But it is not just women who put more effort into making a good impression on work colleagues at the start of the week.

Men too let their standards suffer with each passing day, the survey of 1,000 customers by Debenhams’ personal shopper network found. They take 28 minutes on Monday, half that on Tuesday and 11 for the rest of the week.

“It’s clear that most men can only pay attention to their appearance for a maximum of two days before opting for an acceptable level of dishevelment,” said Watson.

“Women try to keep their dress standards higher for longer, but by the time Friday comes, they too have gone down a line of least resistance.”

Bono’s back surgery forces U2 to axe Glastonbury gig

London, May 26 (ANI): U2 rockers have postponed their entire North American tour and cancelled their appearance at Glastonbury following Bono’s emergency back surgery.

The 50-year-old singer was taken to a hospital in Germany on Friday after he complained of suffering “severe pain” and “partial paralysis” during rehearsals for their 360 Degree world tour in Munich, reports The Daily Express.

He underwent a surgery immediately after neurosurgeon Joerg Tonn was convinced that he will make a full recovery but will need at least two months rest.

“He was already in severe pain with partial paralysis of the lower leg. The surgery was the only course of treatment for full recovery and to avoid further paralysis,” said neurosurgeon Joerg Tonn.

“Bono is now much better with complete recovery of his motor-deficit. His prognosis is excellent but to obtain a sustainable result he must now enter a period of rehabilitation,” he added.

The band have also been forced to cancel their prestigious headlining appearance at Glastonbury on 25 June (10).

Bono admits he is shattered to let his fans down.

He says, “I”m heartbroken. We really wanted to be there to do something really special.” (ANI)

Waitress claims US restaurant Hooters put her on ”weight restriction”

New York, May 21 (ANI): A waitress, who took up employment with American restaurant chain Hooters, claims that she was put on ”weight restriction” after she was deemed too fat.

Cassie Smith, 20, who is 5 feet 8 inches tall and 132 pounds, is well within a normal weight range, but she claims the measurements were not good enough for Hooters.

During an evaluation about her uniform, she said two women who worked at the Atlanta headquarters hinted that she needed to lose some weight.

Smith, who works at the Roseville, Mich., Hooters, says the women gave her a free 30-day membership to a gym and gave her 30 days to lose weight or risk losing her job.

“These women proceeded to explain to me that I had 30 days and they would give me a free gym membership, and if I didn”t improve within those 30 days I would be separated from the company,” the New York Daily News quoted her as saying.

“If I improved a little bit I would get 30 more days, and if I improved completely they would leave me alone,” she revealed.

Smith says she is “horrified” and “humiliated” by this.

Hooters has denied Smith”s claims, saying “no employee in Michigan has been counselled about their weight”.

The chain adds, however, that it “will say that our practice of upholding an image standard based on appearance, attire and fitness for Hooters Girls is both legal and fair”.

The company likens its policies on appearance to that of the Dallas Cowboy”s cheerleaders and the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes.

Smith has consulted an attorney and may take legal action.

“I don”t want other girls to have to go through this. I don”t want anyone to have to go through this,” she said.

“If I could”ve gone back and not worked there for two years to take back that feeling, I would do it,” she added. (ANI)

Loneliness ‘can cause weight gain’

Washington, May 20 (ANI): The world may have become a global village because of Internet and mobile phones, but many still deal with loneliness and emotional distress that may lead to overeating and serious weight gain.

Mary Jo Rapini, a psychotherapist with The Methodist Weight Management Center in Houston says that people look for comfort food when they feel lonely or depressed.

Some will begin to gain a lot of weight, begin to feel even more self conscious about their appearance, and fall into a deeper depression.

Rapini adds that it is important to express yourself, be it through talking to someone, by journaling, drawing self-portraits of how you are feeling or writing poetry or short stories about your situation. (ANI)

Parents of Indian-appearance toddler unaware of his absence for 6 hours

London, May 19 (ANI): The callous parents of the three-year old boy who was found wandering on Sydney’s streets in a visibly distressed state, failed to register his absence for a full six hours.

The poor kid who was too young to even tell the police his name, had to go from street to street with child welfare workers in the hope of identifying his house.

Police assiduously searched for his home the entire day canvassing schools, pre-schools and childcare centres in the vicinity, but to no avail.

They drove around for 2½ hours before the toddler was able to point out his house, The Telegraph reports.

It has emerged that the parents of the boy both thought their son was with the other, and were unaware that their misconception could have cost them their son’s life. (ANI)

Indian appearance like Sydney toddler reunited with parents

Sydney, May 18 (ANI): The toddler who was found wandering unsupervised on a Western Sydney street has been reunited with his parents.

He had previously been spotted by two off-duty paramedics and was in the police’s care.

His parents contacted the New South Wales Department of Community Services (DoCS) around 6 hours after he was found.

The reunion has come as a relief for the police who were even considering holding a press-conference to appeal to the boy’s parents to come forward.

“You can only just think about what could happen with a busy road with that number of vehicles at that time in the morning,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Perinth duty officer Inspector Cox, as saying.

Police will investigate the matter but it is too early to know if the parents will face criminal charges, he added.

“DOCS will advise us and police will be conducting further inquiries into this matter,” he told reporters. (ANI)

‘Don’t want Schumacher’s tainted legacy’

Lewis Hamilton says he wants to be remembered as a Formula One great, but not in the manner of Michael Schumacher. The 25-year-old Briton entered the sport the year after seven-time champion Schumacher retired from Ferrari in 2006, and this weekend is the first time the two have raced each other around the streets of Monaco.

The German’s comeback with Mercedes, at the age of 41, has revived memories of his last appearance in Monaco when he was sent to the back of the starting grid for blocking the track in qualifying to secure pole. That controversy was one of several to have dogged Schumacher’s career despite his status as the most successful driver the sport has ever seen, with 91 wins.

Hamilton, the 2008 world champion with McLaren, said he would hate to walk away from the sport with his reputation similarly ‘tainted’.

“When I leave F1 I want to be remembered as one of the best drivers of all time,” he said. “I am not really bothered if I am remembered or not. But clearly I am going to be remembered. I am part of the sport, I’m part of its history, I am a world champion,” he added.

“I think as I am going to be anyway, I would like to be remembered in the best way and the best light,” added the driver, who was himself embroiled in a furore over lying to race stewards last season.

“For me, when I think about the history it is not just about me, it is about how my family raised me, and where we came from. For that to be potentially tainted by something like that (Schumacher’s Monaco controversy) would be really devastating for me. That is definitely something I don’t want to be remembered for.”

Hamilton refused to be drawn into a judgement on what Schumacher did last time around, however.

Germany captain Ballack limps off in FA Cup final

Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack limped off in the first half of Saturday’s FA Cup final against Portsmouth at Wembley Stadium leaving Germany coach Joachim Loew with an anxious wait on his captain’s fitness.

Ballack, who is out of contract at the west London club at the end of the season and could have been making his last appearance for the Premier League champions, took a heavy knock on his ankle after a late tackle by Kevin-Prince Boateng.

The 33-year-old Ballack, who has 98 international caps, has already been named in Germany’s preliminary squad for the World Cup finals in South Africa which start on June 11.

The visibly distressed Ballack was replaced by Brazilian Juliano Belletti after 44 minutes with the score at 0-0.

Germany will face Australia, Serbia and Ghana in Group D at the World Cup finals.

Hubby keeping Heidi Montag ‘a prisoner in her own home’

New York, May 14 (ANI): Heidi Montag’s hubby is reportedly keeping her a “prisoner” in her own home.

Reports suggest that Spencer keeps the windows of their house covered with dark cloth, the doors blocked.

It is said that Spencer invited one of his friends, a Marine, to serve as a guard.

In fact, Heidi was allowed to leave the house only three times in April.

“Once to do a paid appearance in Las Vegas and twice to accompany Spencer on research trips for a script he”s writing. He”s forcing Heidi to help with it, making her come up with ideas for the female characters,” the New York Daily News quoted a source as saying.

Meanwhile, a source has told OK! magazine that Heidi “has become Spencer”s little blonde puppet.”

“Spencer is obsessed with power, and Heidi is obsessed with herself. This gives Spencer something he wants — power over Heidi — and it gives Heidi something she wants: feeling like someone is obsessed with her. It”s really sick in many senses, but it works,” said the source. (ANI)

Costly blow as Honduras striker ruled out of World Cup

Honduras striker Carlo Costly will miss the World Cup after fracturing a bone in his right foot, a team doctor said on Sunday.

Costly, one of coach Reinaldo Rueda’s main strikers with six goals during the qualifiers, was injured playing for his Romanian club Vaslui on Thursday.

“We are sure now that it’s a fracture and it will take six weeks to heal,” team doctor Oscar Benitez was quoted as saying by the Honduran newspaper Diez.

“It’s not true that (Costly) will be playing football again soon. It’s a complete fracture of the fifth metatarsal in the base of his right foot, which is considered serious.”

Costly’s father Anthony played for Honduras in their only previous appearance at the finals in Spain in 1982.

Rueda will announce his squad of 23 on Monday for the June 11-July 11 finals in South Africa, where Honduras will face Chile, Spain and Switzerland in Group H.

Sydney, May 6 (ANI): Scarlett Johansson has admitted that nerves often get the better of her, whenever she has to make an appearance on the red carpet.

She said: “I like the getting ready part. I like the hair and the make-up and the pretty dress… It”s just getting on the red carpet I just instantly flop sweat.

“It”s a weird chemical reaction I have somehow to the red carpet. I don”t know what it is. Maybe it”s just the carpet itself.”

The star, 25, further added that she suffers a similar reaction when singing live, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

She added to US TV talk show host Ellen DeGeneres: “I flop sweat then too. I probably need a shot to stop that.”

Flop sweat is nervous perspiration caused by a fear of failure before an audience. (ANI)

Christie Brinkley denies surgery rumors

London, April 30 (ANI): Christie Brinkley has denied that she underwent a cosmetic facelift surgery, while her daughter was admitted for an elective rhinoplasty procedure.

The model was rumoured to have entered the Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, a day before her daughter with musician Billy Joel checked-in.

However, the beauty has dismissed the reports.

“Alexa had breathing difficulties due to a deviated septum and decided to correct the appearance of her nose at the same time,” the Daily Star quoted her representative, as telling New York Post gossip column Page Six.

The spokesperson added: “As far as Christie is concerned, she was at Lenox Hill to support her daughter, and throughout her career people have speculated that she”s done this or that, which she always chooses to take as a compliment.” (ANI)

Henin overcomes broken finger and fiery German in opener

Four-times French Open champion Justine Henin overcame a broken finger and fired-up German opponent to win her opening match at Stuttgart on Wednesday, her first clay court tournament since her comeback.

The 27-year-old was taken to a tiebreak in the first set before breaking Julia Goerges’ resistance in the second for a 7-6 6-1 first-round win.

Henin, finalist in the Australian Open in January in only her second tournament back after a break of nearly two years, is gearing up for her first visit to her favourite venue at Roland Garros since her self-imposed exile from the game.

Her last appearance in Paris was in 2007 when she won her fourth title there.

The Belgian, a wild card for the event, battled through the match wearing a splint on her little left finger which she broke in training last week.

“The improvement is pretty good, even if my finger is not yet beautiful, it’s still really blue but the pain is a lot less and that’s a nice feeling,” Henin, who has already climbed to 24th in the rankings, told reporters.

“I have started to get used to the splint during the match so I felt better today.”

“It was a tough first set, she was on fire, serving pretty well and being pretty aggressive and you slide a lot on this court, when you’re on the defensive it’s not easy to come back onto the court.

“I was much more aggressive in the second set and I was more into the game, she had nothing to lose and went for everything.”

“I didn’t play for two years so I’m just trying to find the balance with my game,” said Henin who, among other things, took part in a reality show on Belgian television during her sabbatical.

“I need matches before the French Open, that’s for sure, everything I’ve done since the beginning of the season has been pretty good. I’m just trying to get used to my career again.”

“It’s good to play matches, that’s what I need, it’s good to be back.”

World number two Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark is top seed.

Agnieszka Radwanska (5) became the first seed to go out when she lost to Israel’s Shahar Peer, who won 6-3 6-7 6-2.
